SPRING/SUMMER 2014 Peace Arch Hospital & Community Health FOUNDATION ENVISIONING THE HEALTHIEST COMMUNITY POSSIBLE IMAGINE CANADA GIVES THEIR STAMP OF APPROVAL MEET ELLEN KENNETT'S 50 YEARS OF COMMUNITY SERVICE ART REITMAYER Leading a team with a vision ✚ LEADING THE WAY WELCOME TO thrive! Summer has arrived on the Peninsula and with it, a few new beginnings for Peace Arch Hospital & Community Health Foundation. This is our first issue of Thrive, a publication produced specifically for our caring donors and our thriving community. Thrive, an evolution of our previous magazine, health+care, features a new design we hope you’ll enjoy; our magazine is growing along with us as we ramp up to the exciting future that’s in store for Peace Arch Hospital. Another new beginning is the appointment of Art Reitmayer as our new board chair. Graham Cameron’s successful two-year term has come to a close and Art has now officially taken the wheel. We can’t thank Graham enough for his invaluable leadership over the last two years and are thrilled his contributions will continue as past chair. 2014 also represents a new beginning for our hospital. After several years of quietly fundraising for a new Emergency Department, we are confident a Peace Arch Hospital redevelopment and expansion will be approved by the Ministry of Health this year. This redevelopment plan will revolutionize our hospital and enhance health care in our community. Stay tuned for the detailed plans! Finally, we hope you are enjoying our magnificent community and all of the great things summer brings like the White Rock Farmers’ Market, strolling the pier with a gelato, lazy days at Crescent Beach and exploring the numerous nature trails that surround us. Now, that’s what we call thriving. Jackie Smith Art Reitmayer p.s. We would love your feedback on our new magazine! Drop us a line at [email protected] and let us know what you think. SPRING/SUMMER 2014 3 ✚ OUR THRIVING COMMUNITY WANTED: The Healthiest Community Possible IN 2011, THE FOUNDATION’S BOARD OF DIRECTORS decided there was more the Foundation could do outside of the hospital campus to positively impact health and wellness in our community. To better understand what comprises a healthy community, the Foundation brought together a dedicated and passionate group of 22 community leaders interested in working together towards a common vision of becoming the healthiest community possible. From that initial town hall meeting in the autumn of 2012, a working group was established to continue the conversation and collaborate on a plan that would articulate the vision, goals, actions and a timeline for this community effort. Using research from global, national and local sources to determine what it means to become a healthier community, five strategic goals were created to ensure our community THE VISION South Surrey/White Rock is a healthy community committed to physical, mental and social well-being. becomes the healthiest possible. These goals include sharing resources, increasing access to recreation facilities and natural areas, providing citizens with the skills to optimize health and active living, recognizing the social and emotional needs of a person in addition to health care and advocating healthy public policies. The stakeholder group recently met to develop an action plan to achieve these goals. With lots of creativity, passion and thoughtful contemplation, some brilliant ideas were established on how best to implement and realize this vision. Stay tuned for future updates! In the meantime, check out our website for more information, and if you have a great idea for a healthier community, email us at [email protected]. Illustrator Sam Bradd captured the conversation on paper, showcasing the five strategic goals for our thriving community. THE OUTCOME A socially connected community where residents volunteer their time, where neighbours are friends, where people enjoy a sense of belonging and participate in community events and activities, and where the elements of great health are improving. 4 thrive Bathing Beauties HOSPITAL ENHANCEMENTS ✚ Spa-like bathing suites provide comfort and ease. SLIPPING INTO A WARM, spa-like bath with soft lights and your favourite music is an escape from the day’s hustle and bustle… a moment to savour. Thanks to generous donations of $276,000 for six new bathing suites, this delightful experience is now available to residents of the Dr. Al Hogg Pavilion. For many residents, it is a cherished time of the week when staff can fully focus on their personal preferences and needs. “The bathing experience is about so much more than getting clean,” explains Hogg Pavilion Manager, Lisa Humphreville. “For some, it’s a chance to sit in a bath and relax… a time to feel a little less pain. There’s no rush to get to the next item on the schedule. It’s their time.” Completed earlier this year, the suites’ design and amenities make it much easier for staff to provide a more pleasurable experience for patients. State-of-the-art tubs and lifts enable a smooth transition and operation, while storage cabinets hide clutter and provide easy access to supplies. Electric warmers furnish warm towels and clothes for when patients are ready to get on with their day. “The original suites were built purely for function and were cold and clinical,” Humphreville says. “With the new suites, patients eagerly look forward to their baths. We are very grateful to the Foundation and its donors. Without them, this would not have been possible.” The new bathing suites are a valuable addition towards the delivery of quality care in Hogg Pavilion. I would like to thank Peace Arch Hospital Foundation for these new suites, and express my gratitude to the many donors whose generous support make projects such as this one possible. — Doug Rhodes, pictured here with his father Jim — a resident of Hogg Pavilion. SPRING/SUMMER 2014 5 “Every family, young and old, needs Peace Arch Hospital.” Ellen Kennett A Passionate Pioneer 6 thrive DONORS MAKING A DIFFERENCE ✚ ELLEN KENNETT grew up on a farm in Cloverdale when roads were gravel, phones were scarce, neighbours knew and helped each other through good times and bad — and the closest hospitals were in New Westminster. In 1948 when the White Rock Hospital Society formed to build a hospital, the close-knit community rolled up their collective sleeves and got to work. Their ambitious fundraising goal was $150,000 — at the time, a staggering amount. “It was one third the cost of the hospital," Ellen recalls, “and a requirement of the provincial government.” When White Rock District Hospital opened in 1954, Ellen remembers a feeling of real ownership of that first little hospital, and one she has taken to heart ever since. In the 1960s Ellen volunteered with the Hospital Auxiliary’s Hilltop Group of which she was president for several terms, then vice-president of the main auxiliary followed by president for four years — which also made her a voting member of the Peace Arch Hospital Board. A New Foundation She became chair of the hospital board in the mid-80s until the government disbanded hospital boards, and then she led the transition to the Peace Arch District Hospital Foundation. “We sought as much continuity as possible, and to maintain control over our fundraising dollars and how they would be spent.” Running a foundation was a new endeavor and it came with a steep learning curve. For Ellen, whose volunteerism was her work outside of the home, it was an exciting time. “I enjoyed what I was doing. It was a great learning experience for me. I felt it was important work and that I was really contributing.” After a brief hiatus, Ellen was invited to be a member of the Foundation’s Partners in Caring Campaign and, at 85, is still active today. Paying It Forward Like her community neighbours, Ellen and her husband, Howard — who share a blended family of 10 children — have appreciated having a great hospital close to home. Seven of their children were born at Peace Arch Hospital and, over the years, they have relied on treatment for appendix surgery, tonsillectomies and fractured collarbones. As she thinks about the early pioneers who made the hospital a reality, and those who continue to ensure it offers quality care, she knows the tradition must continue. “A lot happened years and years ago to build communities. People would give their time, lumber, land — whatever they could — and that determined spirit continues today when it comes to the hospital. It would be lovely if new people who come to this community could continue to be part of that tradition and contribute in some way, big or small.” Grateful for the care her family has received over the years, she and Howard have joined the Foundation’s Weatherby Circle by confirming a gift in their wills. “We wanted to do this,” Ellen says. “Our children are educated and looked after, and while we are not a wealthy family, we know that no matter what the gift is, it will make a difference. It’s a good feeling and it’s so easy to do.” “Every family, young and old, needs Peace Arch Hospital.” Thank you for your many gifts and contributions Ellen, they will be felt for generations to come. I enjoyed what I was doing. It was a great learning experience for me. I felt it was important work and that I was really contributing. SPRING/SUMMER 2014 7 ✚ RAISING FUNDS WE ON SATURDAY, May 3rd, guests gathered to Paint the Town Red for ER at Centennial Arena — transformed into an elegant sea of black, white and red — for the annual Peace Arch Hospital & Community Health Foundation’s Partners In Caring Gala. With the support of close to 500 leaders in business, health care and philanthropy, more than $250,000 was raised for a new Emergency Department at Peace Arch Hospital. FROM THE TOP: White Rock Mayor Wayne Baldwin with Jackie Smith and Art Reitmayer from PAHCHF; Neil Yarmoshuk and the team from Presenting Partner, CIBC Wood Gundy; Master of Ceremonies Christopher Gaze of Bard on the Beach. A very special ‘thank you!’ to presenting partner CIBC Wood Gundy, and to all the sponsors, attendees, supporters and volunteers who made the event possible. Together, we continue our remarkable community legacy of a small group of dedicated individuals making an important contribution to our health care, close to home. 8 thrive RAISING FUNDS ✚ Moby Dick’s Plunges On! James Morrison of Moby Dick Seafood Restaurant presents a cheque to Ashleigh Morriss from the Foundation. IN MARCH, Moby Dick Seafood Restaurant donated $1 from every customer's bill to our Foundation — a grand total of $1,760. An annual event, this local seafood landmark has raised a splashing $22,500 since 2000. Holt Renfrew’s Shop for a Cause ON APRIL 8th, Holt Renfrew Vancouver hosted Shop For A Cause, a private evening of high fashion complete with a fashion show, complimentary make-up applications and a personal shopping experience. $3,700 was raised in support of the hospital and plans are already in the works to make this an annual event! Semiahmoo Secondary Students’ Creative Contribution THE ARTISTIC SAVVY of Semiahmoo Secondary’s graduating International Baccalaureate students was on display from April 14-16th where placemat and gift card sales generated $379 in support of Peace Arch Hospital. A big ‘thank you’ to the talented youth of our community! FUNDRAISING FLASHBACK: Porch Light Nights IN THE EARLY 1950s when White Rock was a small community of 6,000 people, volunteers canvassed door to door to collect donations for the Peace Arch District Hospital building fund. On a designated evening, families who wished to make a donation would leave their porch lights on so that volunteers knew which houses to visit. SPRING/SUMMER 2014 9 New board chair takes ‘giving back’ to heart. 10 thrive FEATURE STORY ✚ WHEN PHIL BARTER AND CHRIS WHITE at Price Waterhouse strongly recommended that their articling student and protégé, Art Reitmayer, get involved in community organizations, Art took the message to heart. It wasn’t long before he volunteered as PW’s representative on the board of the Safety Council of Vancouver…the first of a long and impressive list of volunteer positions. new markets. He honed his business skills, completed his MBA, nurtured his entrepreneurial drive, and consistently emerged a likable leader to whom people are drawn. Each step of the way, Art has honoured his mentor’s advice to give back to the community. A short list includes leadership roles with the United Way, Arts Umbrella, the Orphans Fund, Coast Mental Health Foundation, Volunteer Vancouver and Nature Conservancy Canada. His contributions have been recognized with a Fellowship (FCA) from the Institute of Chartered Accountants and the BC Community Achievement Award from the Province of BC. “Phil and Chris strongly believed that if you’re going to work in a community, you have to work on the community at the same time. I never forgot that — and looking back, I’ve “The people I meet at each gotten more back than I’ve organization are completely ever given.” different. But when the offer came to the world for at least a short help CKVU-TV, a struggling independent period of time, I’ve enjoyed it!” television station in Vancouver, the challenge was too good to refuse. That position launched an illustrious career in broadcasting that included the role of VP Finance at CKNW, working for Frank Griffiths at Western International Communications (WIC), and a successive run as president at WIC Television Group, BCTV, CanWest Global and Channel M — which he and his partners started in 2002 and sold to Rogers in 2008. Art’s journey may not have led to New York, but it did give him the opportunity to work through mergers, make the unprofitable profitable, expand media outlets nationally and pioneer A New Era After four years as a board member at Peace Arch Hospital & Community Health Foundation, Art’s recent appointment as board chair comes just as the hospital is on the cusp of its next major expansion. “It’s an honour to serve on this board and an exciting time to take the helm,” Art says. “There are many extraordinary people here and there’s no doubt I stand on the shoulders of those who came before me, which is certainly the case with (outgoing board chair) Graham Cameron. He has been an outstanding leader.” SPRING/SUMMER 2014 11 ✚ FEATURE STORY The Foundation currently awaits final approval from the Ministry of Health on an expansion plan that will see a new emergency department and a new residential care facility with a hospice residence at Peace Arch Hospital. The Master Concept Plan provides a comprehensive solution to the needs of the community and the Foundation has worked closely with Fraser Health to ensure that the entire plan is launched in unison. “The ER and residential care provide a solution together,” Art explains. “A new ER on its own is not enough. We need the ability to move people into the hospital and right now there are no beds. If we can’t move people from the ER into acute care beds, then we’d just have a nicer place for patients to spend more time.” More To Be Done The board has already commenced with planning for the next stage of development for the hospital and the community. “While we work to ensure the hospital continues to meet the community’s evolving needs, we’re also working to minimize demand with prevention strategies through the Healthy Community Initiative.” The Foundation initiated the Healthy Community Committee and invited the City of White Rock, City of Surrey, Fraser Health and community organizations to develop strategies for enhanced health and prevention. “Our appetite is to grow the Because People Matter grant program. I believe we’ll see an increased investment in the program once the Committee starts identifying solutions — in fact, we’ve already increased its funding and scope to help the program grow.” Setting A High Standard Knowing there is much to be done in a challenging health care environment doesn’t phase Art, who is not one for the status quo. “I think there is more we can embark on, and I love the discussions we’re having with our board. It’s a tradition in this community to seek the best solution to meet our collective needs — whatever it takes. That’s exactly what our board is set to do.” Art and his wife, Marj, are longtime residents of the Peninsula, and have two grown children and two grandchildren. Art’s passion for business remains undiminished as he continues to be involved in numerous initiatives, in addition to his ongoing commitment to the community. Just as the Foundation pushes ahead with its bold strategy, it has been accredited by Imagine Canada for its best practices — the highest standard a Canadian charity can achieve. “This is a great accomplishment for our Foundation. It says our practices are of the highest order and speaks volumes about our staff and everyone involved with our organization.” “This is a great accomplishment for our Foundation. Shab Khan, Optometrist Assistant, agrees. “Peace Arch Hospital & Community Health Foundation seemed like an obvious choice. Not only is it local, but the hospital has taken care of all of us at some point.” The clinic accepts donations from patients, which the doctors match dollar for dollar. In their first two years White Rock Optometry has raised an astonishing $27,541, and each year they strive to raise more money than they did the year before. “We’re lucky we live in a community that is generous, and we’re lucky to have great staff who aren’t afraid to ask for donations,” Dr. Donaldson said. “It’s a great feeling to give back to the community.” This special group does more than give back. The team at White Rock Optometry proudly participates in the Foundation’s annual Great Pumpkin Run Walk. Joined by family members of all ages, staff don creative costumes and embrace the community spirit of the event. Dr. Donaldson reflects, “It was great to see the team out walking and running… that we were also recognized at the event (for their fundraising efforts) was just the icing on the cake.” “We all look forward to that event,” Shab says. “It is very fun, and the number of people who participate is amazing!” FROM THE TOP: The White Rock Optometry doctors present their 2013 cheque for $14,527.70.
