JAPAN SOCIETY is the leading U.S. organization committed to deepening
mutual understanding between the United States and Japan in a global
context. Now in its second century, the Society serves audiences across
the United States and abroad through innovative programs in arts and
culture, public policy, business, language and education.
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Dear Friends and Supporters,
In our 2013–14 season, Japan Society’s 107th year, we celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Society’s Performing Arts
Program. This special 60th anniversary season called Japan,
the U.S. & Beyond! presented numerous and wide ranging
U.S.-Japan collaborative works, including the re-staging of the most successful Japan Society commission, Dogugaeshi, created
by puppet artist Basil Twist and Japanese musician Yumiko
Tanaka; and the new 60th anniversary special commission
and world premiere of Alec Duffy’s original production of
Yukio Shiba’s play Our Planet, in English translation, with stunning motion graphics by Japanese artist Nobuyuki Hanabusa.

We were honored in late September with a visit from Prime
Minister Shinzo Abe, who hosted a reception at the Society for foreign dignitaries and special guests. In the arena of
economy, business and policy, guest speakers included
Bridgewater Associates Chairman and CIO Ray Dalio, former
Prime Minster Yoshihiko Noda, LINE Corporation CEO Akira
Morikawa, LIXIL CEO Yoshiaki Fujimori, Yasutoshi Nishimura,
Senior Vice-Minister for Economic and Fiscal Policy and
Tomomi Inada, Minister in charge of “Cool Japan” Strategy. NYU Economics Professor Nouriel Roubini shared his
thoughts on Abenomics and Federal Reserve policy, Harvard
Professor Joseph Nye examined progress in America’s “rebalance” toward Asia, and the Honorable Yoriko Kawaguchi,
former Foreign and Environment Minister of Japan, discussed
female empowerment and work-life balance in Japan and the
U.S with Morgan Stanley CFO Ruth Porat.

JAPAN SOCIETY ANNUAL REPORT 2013–14
The New York Times hailed the spring Gallery exhibition, Points
of Departure: Treasures of Japan from the Brooklyn Museum,
as “radically reorienting,” while works in the fall exhibition,
Rebirth: Recent Work by Mariko Mori, were praised as “radiant
abstractions” by the Financial Times. Our seventh annual
JAPAN CUTS festival, with 25 films and 4,700 attendees, received significant coverage from The New York Times and
The Wall Street Journal. A two-part film series paid tribute
to the late writer and critic Donald Richie, “the dean of art
critics in Japan” (TIME Magazine), who introduced Japanese
cinema to the West. Broader cultural events included a
Japanese craft beer tasting, a workshop on sake cocktails and
“Lolita Fashion: Costume or Culture,” a lecture and fashion
show exploring the Japanese subculture with official Kawaii
Ambassador Misako Aoki. Pritzker Prize-winning architect Toyo Ito spoke on on the third anniversary of 3/11 and multipleaward-winning architect Tadao Ando completed the season.
The TOMODACHI Japan Society Junior Fellows Student Exchange Program received five students from Japan in March
and took 10 U.S. students to Japan in June, developing leadership skills and networks for the future. Our Going Global
Social Networking Program increased participants in 2013
to more than 1,500 students from 29 schools in the U.S.,
Japan and Pakistan. With online registration now available,
the Toyota Language Center has broadened its offerings to
include the Nihongo Chat gatherings and a rodoku (vocalized
reading) course, among others.
Our U.S.-Japan Innovators Network organized two exchange
programs with leaders from Tohoku in November and
January. The second, in partnership with ETIC, is part of
an ongoing three-year training and networking project on
community and revitalization in Tohoku. In September, the
Japan Earthquake Relief Fund (JERF) team traveled to Iwate,
Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures to meet with 14 grantees
and observe their projects firsthand. In April, the Society
announced the latest round of grants from JERF, supporting
projects that promote community revitalization, business and
social entrepreneurship, children and the arts.
In February, the Society announced a $6 million grant to the
Odawara Art Foundation toward construction of a multi-arts
presenting complex along the coast of the city of Odawara
near Tokyo, giving the Society a more permanent collaborative base in Japan. This opportunity came through longtime
Japan Society supporter Hiroshi Sugimoto, founder of the
Odawara Art Foundation.
I’m pleased to share that our 2014 Annual Dinner grossed
over $1.4 million with strong attendance. Thank you. We
could not do continue what we do best without your generous support.
Motoatsu Sakurai
President, Japan Society

PERFORMING ARTS PROGRAM
CELEBRATES ITS 60TH!
PERFORMING ARTS PROGRAM
The Performing Arts Program introduces performers
from Japan’s contemporary and traditional music, dance and theater scenes and commissions performing artists from around the world to create works on
themes relating to Japan. Many distinguished artists
have performed in the Society’s 260-seat theater and
on Society-produced North American tours.
This season, Japan Society’s Performing Arts Program celebrated
its 60th anniversary. With the tagline Japan, the U.S. & Beyond!, the
Program offered numerous collaborative productions that brought
together among the most celebrated creative forces from around the
globe. In Japan, kanreki, or one’s 60th birthday, marks a special celebration of longevity and rebirth. The Program used this momentous
occasion to reflect on its past and set the stage for the future.

JAPAN EARTHQUAKE RELIEF FUND
U.S.-JAPAN INNOVATORS NETWORK
The U.S.-Japan Innovators Network is a multidisciplinary network of emerging
and established innovative leaders committed to creating a better world by
connecting people and ideas through network-building exchanges, private
retreats, public forums and long-term projects.
Since its inception on March 12, 2011, Japan Society’s Japan Earthquake Relief Fund (JERF) has supported 64 projects that have been awarded to 43 organizations working on relief and long-
term recovery. Almost half of these organizations support community and economic revitalization
projects in all three of the most affected prefectures—Fukushima, Miyagi and Iwate. A dozen organizations work on projects to improve the lives
of children in the region and range from sending children in Fukushima Prefecture to summer camp
so they can play outdoors to educational support and leadership development. A handful of the organizations provide healthcare, with some emphasis on the delivery of mental health services and the rest were involved in providing immediate relief. Japan Society is grateful for the tens of thousands of
donations that have made it possible to assist the
people of Tohoku through these hardworking and
dedicated organizations. For more information on
the Japan Earthquake Relief Fund and a list of major
supporters, visit japansociety.org/earthquake.
