The increased penetration levels of renewable and distributed energy resources lead to increased challenges in maintaining
reliable control and operation of the grid. Integrating a wide variety of systems governed by different regulations and owned by
different entities to the grid increases the level of uncertainty not only on the demand side but also in terms of generation
resource availability. This complicates the process of achieving generation versus demand balance. Renewable energy sources
vary by nature and require intelligent forecasting and prediction systems to determine how and when this energy can be used.
Controlling distributed resources that owned by customers which have enough capacity to support the grid during peak hours
and provide ancillary service, is another challenge. Most of these distributed resources will be installed on the distribution
network, which already in its current state, lacks the proper communication and control network necessary to control the
applicable resources. Moreover, the large number and widespread use of these resources makes them difficult to control from
a central location. To overcome these problems, deep integration between intelligent measurement nodes, communication
systems, IT technology, artificial intelligence, power electronics and physical power system components will be implemented to
manage the modern smart grid resources. On one hand, this type of integration can dramatically improve grid performance and
efficiency, but on the other, it can also introduce new types of vulnerability. The risk of vulnerability escalates when the level of
integration between physical and cyber components of the power system increases. The design and optimization of such
complex systems requires coordination between the cyber and physical components in order to obtain the best performance
while minimizing the risk of vulnerability. In other words, the physical power system must be designed as a security aware
system.
Biography:
Dr. Mohammed is a Professor of Electrical Engineering and is the Director of the Energy Systems Research Laboratory at
Florida International University, Miami, Florida. He received his Master and Doctoral degrees in Electrical Engineering from
Virginia Tech in 1981 and 1983, respectively. He has performed research on various topics in power and energy systems in
addition to computational electromagnetics and design optimization in electric machines, electric drive systems and other low
frequency environments. He performed multiple research projects for several Federal agencies since 1990’s dealing with; power
system analysis, physics based modeling, electromagnetic signature, sensorless control, electric machinery, high frequency
switching, electromagnetic Interference and ship power systems modeling and analysis. Professor Mohammed has currently
active research programs in a number of these areas funded by DoD, the US Department of Energy and several industries.
Professor Mohammed is a world renowned leader in electrical energy systems and computational electromagnetics. He has
published more than 400 articles in refereed journals and other IEEE refereed International conference records. He also
authored a book and several book chapters. Professor Mohammed is an elected Fellow of IEEE and is an elected Fellow of the
Applied Computational Electromagnetic Society. Professor Mohammed is the recipient of the prestigious IEEE Power and Energy
Society Cyril Veinott electromechanical energy conversion award and the 2012 outstanding research award from Florida
InternationaluUniversity.
Professor Mohammed has lectured extensively with invited and plenary talks at major research and industrial organizations
worldwide. He serves as editor of several IEEE Transactions including the IEEE Transactions on Energy Conversion, the IEEE
Transactions on Smart Grid, IEEE Transactions on Magnetics, COMPEL and the IEEE Power Engineering Letters. Professor
Mohammed served as the International Steering Committee Chair for the IEEE International Electric Machines and Drives
Conference (IEMDC) and the IEEE Biannual Conference on Electromagnetic Field Computation (CEFC). Professor Mohammed was
the General Chair of the 2009 IEEE IEMDC conference held in Miami Florida, May 3-6 2009 and was the Editorial Board Chairman
for the IEEE CEFC2010 held in Chicago, IL USA, May 9-12, 2010. Professor Mohammed was also the general chair of the IEEE
CEFC 2006 held in Miami, Florida, April 30 – May 3, 2006. He was also general chair of the 19th annual Conference of the
Applied Computational Electromagnetic Society ACES-2006 held in Miami, Florida March 14-17, 2006. He was the General
Chairman of the 1993 COMPUMAG International Conference and was also the General Chairman of the 1996 IEEE International

Conference on Intelligent Systems Applications to Power Systems (ISAP'96) Dr. Mohammed has chaired the Electric Machinery
Committee for IEEE PES was the Vice Chair and Technical Committee Program Chair for the IEEE PES Electric Machinery
Committee for a number of years. He was a member of the IEEE/Power Engineering Society Governing Board (1992-1996) and
was the Chairman of the IEEE Power Engineering Society Constitution and Bylaws committee. He also serves as chairman, officer

Cloud Computing is an emerging area of research. Due to cloud systems benefits of scalability and elasticity, enterprises and
users are more and more adopting clouds to achieve high performance for their applications and for storing their data at low
costs. Because of the nature of these systems, there are important issues that must be addressed, such as: performance,
resource allocation, efficient scheduling, energy conservation, reliability, protection of sensitive data, security and trust, cost,
availability, quality. Cloud computing makes resources available anywhere at anytime. Therefore effective management of
cloud resources is crucial to use effectively the power of these systems and achieve high system performance. The cloud
computing paradigm can offer various types of services, such as computational resources for complex applications, web
services, social networking, etc. Resource allocation and scheduling is a difficult task in clouds where there are many alternative
heterogeneous computers. The scheduling algorithms must seek a way to maintain a good response time to leasing cost ratio.
Furthermore, adequate data security and availability are critical issues that have to be considered along with energy-efficient
solutions that are required to minimize the impact of cloud computing on the environment. In this talk we will look at the
challenges of resource management in cloud systems. We will present state-of-the-art research covering a variety of concepts
on cloud computing, and we will provide future directions in the cloud computing area.
Biography
Eleni Karatza is a Professor in the Department of Informatics at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. Dr. Karatza's
research interests include Computer Systems Modeling and Simulation, Performance Evaluation, Grid and Cloud Computing,
Energy Efficiency in Large Scale Distributed Systems, Resource Allocation and Scheduling and Real-time Distributed Systems.
Professor Karatza has authored or co-authored over 190 technical papers and book chapters including four papers that earned
best paper awards at international conferences. She is senior member of IEEE, ACM and SCS, and she served as an elected
member of the Board of Directors at Large of the Society for Modeling and Simulation International (2009-2011). She has served
as General Chair, Program Chair and Keynote Speaker in International Conferences. Professor Karatza is the Editor-in-Chief of
the Elsevier Journal "Simulation Modeling Practice and Theory", Area Editor of the "Journal of Systems and Software" of Elsevier,

The transportation industry is facing challenges in terms of reducing emissions, improving fuel economy, meeting the demand of
increasing electrical loads, and reducing the cost. Almost every auto manufacturer is working on the development of new
generation of electric/hybrid and fuel cell vehicles. In the case of airplanes, more electric architecture is the emerging trend, and
in a long term even electric/hybrid airplanes are being examined. Also, there will be an exponential growth in electrical power

demands in transportation systems. “More electric” is a technology enabler for power generation, energy storage, conversion
systems, and other technologies. In this presentation, the current trends in the technologies of electrification of automobiles
and airplanes will be discussed, and the future strategies for improving the efficiency and lowering the emissions will be
presented. The synergies between the electrical components for different modes of transportation and how the technology of
the components being developed for these systems are converging to be modular, more efficient, smaller size, lower weight,
and capable of operating over a wide temperature range will also be examined.
Biography
Kaushik Rajashekara obtained his PhD (1984) degree in Electrical Engineering from Indian Institute of Science, and MBA (1992)
from Indiana Wesleyan University, USA. In 1989, he joined Delphi division of General Motors Corporation in Indianapolis, IN,
USA as a staff project engineer. In Delphi and General Motors, he held various lead technical and managerial positions, and
managed a team responsible for developing electric, hybrid, and fuel cell vehicle propulsion systems, and in 2000, he was
promoted to Chief Scientist position. In 2006, he joined Rolls-Royce Corporation as a Chief Technologist for More Electric
Aircraft architectures, and power conversion/control technologies for gas turbines in aero, marine, defense, and energy
applications. Since August 2012, he is a Distinguished Professor of Engineering and Endowed Chair in Erik Jonsson School of
Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Texas at Dallas. He also holds honorary Qiushi Chair Professor in Zhejiang
University,
China.
Prof. Rajashekara has published more than 130 papers in international journals and conferences, and has over 37 patents on
power conversion and controls for electric/hybrid vehicles and more electric aircraft. He has given more than 100 invited
presentations (in over 40 countries) in international conferences and universities. He has been the reviewer of papers for
several IEEE Transactions.
Prof. Rajashekara was elected as Member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering (NAE) for contributions to electric power
conversion systems in transportation (2012). He is the recepient of the IEEE Richard Harold Kaufmann for outstanding
contributions to the advancement of electrical systems in transportation; IEEE Industry Applications Society Outstanding
Achievement Award and IEEE IAS Gerald Kliman award for contributions to the advancement of power conversion. He was
inducted into the Delphi Innovation Hall of Fame in 1999. He is a Fellow of IEEE and a Fellow of SAE International.

To meet the exponentially growing demand for mobile data traffic, future mobile networks should be designed to:
i) bring the network closer to the user, mainly through network densification and device--to device communication,
ii) bring the content closer to the users, through caching popular content at the edge of the network and leveraging big data
analytics,
iii) have a fluid/elastic architecture, using cloudification of the radio access and virtualization of the network functions, which
enables real--time optimization of the network, and
iv) exploit higher frequency bands (both licensed and unlicensed) while maximizing spectrum utilization through cognitive radio.
In this talk, the potential and challenges associated with each of the above technological trends will be discussed. Stochastic
geometry is used to analytically evaluate the network performance, in terms of spectral and energy efficiencies, and devise
network design guidelines. Finally, the design of green networks using solar energy harvesting will be explored.
Biography
Dr. Mounir Ghogho received the MSc degree in 1993 and the PhD degree in 1997 from the National Polytechnic Institute of
Toulouse. After being a Research Fellow at the University of Strathclyde (Scotland), he joined in December 2001 the University
of Leeds (England), where he currently holds a Chair in Signal Processing (SP) and Communications. Since 2010, he has also been

affiliated with the International University of Rabat where he is currently a Scientific Adviser to the President and the ICT
Research Director. He was awarded the UK Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellowship in September 2000. He is a
recipient of the 2013 IBM Faculty award. He serves/served as Associate Editor of the IEEE SP magazine, the IEEE Transactions on
SP, the IEEE SP Letters, and the Elsevier Digital SP journal. He is/was an elected member of the IEEE SP Society SAM, SPCOM
and SPTM Technical Committees. He is the General Chair of IEEE SPAWC 2010, EUSIPCO 2013, and IEEE WCNC 2019. His research
interests are in the areas of signal processing and communication networks, in which he has published over 250 journal and
conference papers. He held invited scientist/professor positions at many institutions including the US Army Research Lab (USA),
National Institute of Informatics (Japan), Télécom Paris--Tech (France), Technical University of Darmstadt (Germany), University
of Minnesota (USA), and Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunication (China). He is the EURASIP Liaison in Morocco.

WSNs are large-scale distributed embedded systems incorporating small, limited energy, and resource constrained sensor nodes
communicating over wireless media. Because of their massively distributed nature, the design, implementation and evaluation
of sensor network applications, middleware and communication protocols are difficult tasks. Testbeds are representative of
WSNs, they support the diversity of their hardware and software constituents, they are deployed in the same conditions and
would be environment, they make use of the protocols to be used at a larger scale. Testbeds are intended to safeguard would
be implemented WSNs from malfunctions that may not be seen in theoretical simulations. Malfunctions may be in inconvenient
hardware, buggy software, and deployment prone to energy depletion and radio interferences. By momentarily tolerating faults,
that cannot be accepted in everyday actual WSNs, testbeds find the curing solutions.
In the literature many testbeds are reported, not all are typically implemented, not all are available now. Pioneering testbeds,
continue to offer models in concepts, implementation, and applications. Some of the testbeds are built for general use, while
others are meant for typical applications such as visual surveillance. Based on the researchers and practitioners’ interests,
testbeds can be classified under several categories. They may be full-scale or miniaturized, deployed on a 2D or 3D pattern,
mobile or static, provide Web services or are just accessible from the deployment location, limited to homogeneous platforms
or they are extended to support heterogeneity, provide for hybrid simulation as a tool for enhanced analysis or are contented
with experimentation analysis.
Testbeds and simulators are complementary; ideally getting benefits from both of them is the best option. Theoretical
simulation studies provide numerical metrics that are truly needed for practical testbed implementation and deployment.
Simulators are the inevitable tools for analysis; they help previewing the performance metrics needed for proper test beds
deployment.
Biography: Pr. Hossam Mahmoud Ahmed Fahmy is a Professor of Computer Engineering, served as Chair of the Computer
Engineering & Systems Department, Faculty of Engineering, Ain Shams University, Cairo, Egypt from 2006-2008, and from 20102012. He participates in many academic activities in Egypt and abroad. Prof. Fahmy has published and refereed in extensively in
several international refereed journals and conferences, his research areas are focused on Computer Networks.
He chaired the IEEE International Conference on Computer Engineering and Systems (ICCES) from 2006-2008, and from 2010 2013. Prof. Fahmy is a Senior IEEE member, IEEE Region 8 Distinguished Visitor (2013-2015), and member of the IEEE Computer
Society Cloud Computing Special Technical Community. He speaks Arabic, French and English.

• The time provided for oral presentations is 15 min (10 min for the presentation and 5 min for discussion).
• ICEIT 2016 presenters should give their slides to the session chair before the beginning of each session.
They have to provide the session chair with a PowerPoint or PDF presentation on a USB key, as well as a short
