An integrated approach to telecommunications and energy network design as a key driver of sustainable
development
The increasingly ubiquitous connectivity of not only individuals but also devices is opening up a myriad of
applications in various vertical markets for the information and communications technology (ICT) industry,
notably through big data and analytics. The cloud, which is used to make all this growth economically scalable,
can also be leveraged to maximize environmental benefits in terms of not only energy efficiency but also in terms
of mitigation of carbon and other polluting emissions. This however requires an integrated approach to the
design of telecommunications and energy infrastructures. This presentation will address how the combination of
digital economy strategies and energy production and distribution policies (e.g. with the smart grid,
electrification of transport, etc.) can be a compelling driver of the triple bottom line of sustainability with
economic, environmental and social benefits.
Biography of Dr. Charles Despins
Dr. Charles Despins is President and CEO of Prompt inc., a Canadian university-industry research and
development consortium in the information and communications technologies (ICT) sector. In addition to his
academic postings in the Université du Québec network, he has held various posts in the private sector, namely at
CAE Electronics, Microcell Telecommunications and at Bell Nordiq Group (a network operator in rural and
northern areas of Canada) as vice-president and chief technology officer. He has also worked in the 1990s as a
consultant for wireless network deployments in India and China. Dr. Despins is a Fellow of the Engineering
Institute of Canada and a Senior Member of the IEEE. He was also a recipient of the Outstanding Engineer award
(2006) from IEEE Canada and of the Best Paper of the Year award (1993) in IEEE Transactions on Vehicular
Technology. Following a thirty-year career in the ICT sector, he is today a frequent advocate on Sustainable ICT
issues.

Towards Semantic Interoperability for Healthcare Services
Care provisioned to patients relies on complex medical documentation consisting of data of different nature,
including structured and unstructured information that occurs in silos. Linking such fragmented clinical
information to achieve better semantic interoperability remains a very challenging problem. This is mainly due to
(i) the complexity of the used biomedical vocabulary; (ii) its diverse syntactical representation; and (iii) the
different information models adopted by the various medical information systems. Therefore, if one agrees that
semantic linking is the key to clinical impressions and planning, what if a computer can (i) correctly parse and
annotate medical documentation; (ii) build high semantic structures out of unstructured documents from various
electronic sources, and (iii) predict clinical contexts. What actions could then a computer take that benefit the
patient, the healthcare team, and all levels of decision makers? This talk addresses the above challenges by
presenting an ontological framework for medical documentation processing and analysis, whereby the document
is no longer inert to information technology, but a rich source for knowledge acquisition and a road map to drive
a wide range of highly interoperable software processes which range from collaborative treatment planning to
just-in-time decision support. In particular, we present a new approach to combining benefits of Model Driven
Software Development (MDSD), ontology engineering, and context processing to address current challenges of
semantic interoperability in healthcare.
Biography of Pr. Rachid Benlamri
Pr. Rachid Benlamri is a Professor of Software Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering at Lakehead University,
Canada. He obtained his Master and PhD from the University of Manchester - UK. Professor Benlamri is the head
of the Semantic Web and Mobile Computing Lab at Lakehead University. His research interests are in the area of
Semantic Web, Context-Aware Computing, Ubiquitous Computing, Mobile Knowledge Management, and
Semantic Video Analysis. His research is supported by many funding institutions such as the Natural Sciences and
Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), Ontario Center of Excellence, Connect Canada, Northern
Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC), Academic Health Science Centers (AHSC) of Ontario, and the Ontario
Partnership for Innovations and Commercialization (OPIC). He supervised over 70 students and postdoctoral
fellows. He served as keynote speaker for many international conferences. Professor Benlamri chaired many
international conferences, such as The International Conference on Web and Open Access to Learning
(ICWOAL’2014), the 6th Joint IFIP Wireless and Mobile Networking Conference (WMNC2013), the 4th
International Conference on Networked Digital Technologies (NDT’2012), and the 5th International Conference on
Digital Information Management (ICDIM2010). Prof. Benlamri is an Associate Editor for the International Journal
of Ubiquitous Learning, and member of the editorial board of many other journals such as the International
Journal of Learning Technologies, the International Journal of Mobile Communications, the International Journal
of Emerging Technologies in Web Intelligence, and the International Journal of Electronic Government.

Role of Internet of Things and Cloud Computing in the Smart Grid Technology
Internet of Things (I.o.T) and Cloud Computing Services recently emerged as enabling technologies for the
smart gird. Smart home appliances, Intelligent Electronic Device (IED) and Distributed Energy Resources (DER)
are major I.o.T objects that can be addressable using the IPV6. These objects are called the smart grid internet of
things (SG-I.o.T). The SG-I.o.T generates big data that requires high speed computing infrastructure, widespread
computer networks, big data storage, software, and platforms services. Utility companies’ control and data
centers cannot handle such a large number of devices, high speed processing and massive data storage. Building
large data center’s infrastructure takes a long time, requires widespread communication networks and huge
capital investment. In addition, the center must have tailored operation and maintenance software packages
such as distribution management system (DMS), geographic information systems (GIS), outage management
systems (OMS), customer information systems (CIS) and supervisory control and data acquisition system
(SCADA). Maintaining and upgrading control and data centers’ infrastructure and communication networks as
well as updating and renewing software package licenses requires additional cost. An emerging computing
paradigms such as cloud computing can be used as a smart grid enabler to replace the legacy utilities data
centers. As best described by the NIST, “Cloud computing is a model for enabling convenient, on-demand
network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage,
applications, and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or
service provider interaction.” The talk will highlight the role of I.o.T and cloud computing services and
development models in the smart grid. Mapping the smart grid NIST existing seven domain conceptual models
with the cloud computing NIST service models will also be explored.
Biography of Pr. A. R. Al-Ali
Pr. A. R. Al-Ali received his Ph.D. in electrical engineering and a minor in computer science from Vanderbilt
University, Nashville, TN, USA, 1990; Master degree from Polytechnic Institute of New York, USA, 1986 and
B.Sc.EE from Aleppo University, Syria, 1979. From 1991-2000, he worked as an associate /assistant professor in
KFUPM, Saudi Arabia. Since 2000 and till now, he has been a professor of computer engineering at the American
University of Sharjah, UAE. His research and teaching interests include: embedded systems hardware and
software architectures, smart homes automations, smart grid evolutions and development, remote monitoring
and controlling industrial plants utilizing Internet, GSM, and GPRS networks. Dr. Al-Ali has more than 100
conference and journal publications including two USA and European Patents. Professor Al-Ali has been invited to
deliver keynote speeches on the recent evolution and development in the smart grid in several international
conferences.

Advanced signal processing and artificial intelligent tools for robust industrial diagnosis systems
Diagnosis of industrial systems has become one of the most important issues to reduce manufacturing cost.
Keep working, in the optimal conditions, the equipment of shop floor is mandatory to optimize the energy
consumption and to assure the quality of the manufactured products. Traditional approaches to fault diagnosis
are based in physical models of the machines that are used to determine the effects of the different faults cause
in physical magnitudes. Afterwards some dedicated electronic instrumentation systems are proposed to acquire
the physical magnitude altered by the fault and give an indication of the difference with the healthy state. In
other words, the faulty state, even its severity, is trying to be determined by a single parameter associated to a
single measurement. This approach usually results to non-robust diagnostics and in the impossibility to manage
multi-fault scenarios. State of the art approaches for industrial diagnosis are based on the use of data fusion
techniques based on artificial intelligent algorithms. In this sense, the idea is to take advantage of combine
different parameters, or fault indicators, coming from different physical magnitudes in order to obtain robust
diagnostics and to be able of manage multi-fault scenarios. Along the keynote, it will be reviewed the main
mathematical tools used to this new approach and their use will be illustrated by means of different research
and technology transfer projects conducted by MCIA group.
Biography of Dr. Juan A. Ortega
Dr. Juan A. Ortega received the M.S. Telecommunication Engineer and Ph.D. degrees in Electronics from the
Technical University of Catalonia (UPC) in 1994 and 1997, respectively. In 1994, he joined the UPC Department of
Electronic Engineering as a full time Associate Lecturer. In 1998, he obtained a tenured position as an Associate
Professor. Since 1994 he has taught courses of microprocessors and signal processing. From 1994 to 2001 he was
with Sensor Systems Group working in the areas of smart sensors, embedded systems, and signal conditioning,
acquisition and processing. Since 2001 he belongs to the Motion Control and Industrial Applications research
group working in the area of Industrial Diagnosis. His current R&D areas include: Electromechanical Systems
Diagnosis, Signal Processing, Artificial Intelligence, Smart sensors, Embedded Systems. In the last years, he has
participated in several Spanish and European funded research projects about these items. Dr. Ortega has
authored more than 100 referred journal and conference papers.

Dr. Driss Benhaddou

Wireless Sensor Networks for Distributed Solar Energy in Smart Grid
The current power grid is evolving toward a “smart grid” concept with power generation and distribution not
limited to only large power stations. With the advent of small scale renewable energy technologies, such as
solar energy (i.e. photovoltaic (PV)), and wind energy, smart grid will be composed of complex distributed
systems of generators that accommodate renewable power spread in diverse locations, including customers. A
typical scenario to consider is a customer implementing a solar energy system that will be used to deliver
electricity to its needs while interacting with the smart grid for optimum operation of the building. Such a
customer can store the solar energy, draw more energy from the grid, or sell energy back to the smart grid. To
make this scenario happen, the customer’s system needs to communicate with the grid (by interacting through
the advanced metering system) in order to get all necessary control information. This presentation will talk
about trends and challenges in implementing algorithms and software components that will enable efficient
integration of solar energy in buildings in a smart grid environment using wireless sensor networks. The talk will
also present the current implementation at the University of Houston, current challenges and research
opportunities.
Biography of Dr. Driss Benhaddou
Dr. Driss Benhaddou is a Fulbright scholar and an Associate Professor at the University of Houston (UH), Texas.
He was a Fulbright visiting Professor at Al Akhawayn University, School of Science and Engineering during
academic year 2012/2013. He is actively involved in optical networking, sensor networks research activities, and
network-centered smart systems. He developed state of the art wireless and optical networking research lab
(www.tech.uh.edu/won) and the AT&T lab (www.tech.uh.edu/att) at UH. Dr. Benhaddou has an extensive
industrial experience with Lambda Optical Systems and Sprint, where he played a key role in protocol
development and systems integration activities. He holds two doctoral degrees in optoelectronics and
telecommunication networking from the University of Montpellier II, France, in 1995, and the University of
Missouri in 2002.

The Maghreb market of electricity
The conference presents brief summary of electricity markets in three countries from the Maghreb: Algeria,
Morocco and Tunisia.
The talk will essentially focus on the comparison between their:
- gross production of electricity,
- net electricity injected,
- market size and segmentation in terms of low, medium and high voltage,
- shape of the average load curves,
- yearly power peak demand,
- shares of the global production, net electricity injected, yearly power peak demand and market.
Biography of Dr. Amin Bennouna
Born on 1956, Amin Bennouna holds a Ph-D in Physics, which he teaches since 1980. Co-founder of a solar
energy company from 1996 to 2005 and of a consulting company from 1999, he assisted the creation of few
innovative companies, contributed to build one of the three energy scenarios for Morocco on 2030 and is vice
president of the Moroccan Solar and Wind Industry Association (AMISOLE). Author or contributor to several
studies on energy in Morocco and co-founder of national and international initiatives on research and education,
he is the author of about ninety papers and communications. On 2009, he got a national research distinction
award for his works on “A decision tool for the design of a solar system with a predefined strategy". He wrote a
monographic book about energy in Morocco on April 2011.

Presentation guidelines:
 All presentations should be in English.
 The time provided for oral presentations is 15 min (10 min for the presentation and 5 min for discussion).
 ICEIT 2015 presenters should give their slides to the session chair before the beginning of each session. They
have to provide the session chairman with a PowerPoint or PDF presentation on a USB key, as well as a short
(10-line maximum) printed biography. In addition, they should report to their session room 15 minutes
before the scheduled time.
 For poster presentations, the posters should be displayed in the day of presentation at 8:30 AM. In the
poster session any explanation required should be provided to session chairs and visitors.
