Precast Provides the DNA for Success
guide the architect, Tim Haahs & Associates, toward selection of a precast
design. The hospital’s existing cast-in-place garage was in overall poor
condition, and this factor also contributed to THA’s preference for a precast
design for the replacement garage. THA performed an analysis of both the
precast and cast-in-place designs, and ultimately determined that only precast
construction would allow for the speed ramp to remain open throughout
erection of the structure.
Project: Temple University Health System Ontario Street
Parking Structure
Location: Philadelphia, PA
Owner: Temple University
Architect: Array Architects
Engineer: Timothy Haahs & Associates, Inc.
General Contractor: Shoemaker Construction Company
Precaster: The Shockey Precast Group
Located in the north section of Philadelphia, in a high-traffic area between an
operating medical facility and a residential neighborhood, the site of Temple
University Health System’s Ontario Street Parking Structure project offered
numerous construction challenges, including limited site access, a small
project footprint, and a fast-track construction schedule. Additionally, framing
had to be completed around an existing speed ramp that needed to remain
open throughout the project as it provided access to the hospital morgue and
for outside deliveries to the hospital.
Shockey’s business development manager worked closely with general
contractor Shoemaker Construction during the early design development
phase of the project, providing budgets and design considerations to help
The Shockey Precast Group manufactured and transported a total of 576
pieces of precast, including 140,000 SF of double tees for the five-level
parking structure. Due to the limited site access, Shockey leased a drop lot
from Amtrak five blocks from the construction site. Shockey coordinated the
precast erection, which was performed by union labor and required the use of
a 440-ton crane set 20 feet below grade level to erect six of the nine bays. The
crane was brought into the site using the speed ramp, and was lifted up from
the hole by another crane upon completion of the first six bays. The remaining
bays were erected using a hydraulic crane from the street outside the
construction site. Precast erection began in October 2014 and was completed
in December 2014. The parking structure, which features an architectural
façade designed to replicate DNA strands, provides 1,500 new parking spaces
for Temple University Health System patrons.
SPG Takes on Tysons
General Contractor: The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company
Precaster: The Shockey Precast Group
Located in the 12th largest business market in the country and the heart of
downtown Fairfax County, the Tysons II H Parking Structure in McLean, VA,
was constructed to support the18-story, 476,000 office building currently in
construction at 1775 Tysons Boulevard. When completed in late 2015, the
office building will be the fifth office building designed by Lerner Enterprises
as part of the Corporate Office Centre at Tysons II.
Project: Tysons II H Parking Structure
Location: McLean, VA
Owner: Lerner Enterprises
Architect: Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates
PC Engineer: Smislova, Kehnemul & Associates
The parking structure was designed to allow for future, horizontal expansion,
and includes a green-tinted architectural concrete mix and architectural
finish on the wall panels. The Shockey Precast Group manufactured and
erected a total of 993 precast components for the project, including 337,256
SF of double tees. Erection began in December 2014 and was completed in
May 2015.
Precast Brings Home Multi-Family
Residential Parking Garage
The Discovery Square Parking Structure in Herndon, VA, offered
both design and logistics challenges for The Shockey Precast Group. Designed
to be surrounded by multi-family residential housing, the three-level garage
featured 130,000 SF of double tees and was constructed from 294 pieces of
precast manufactured by Shockey. Although the project was not considered
design-build, SPG’s Vice President of Engineering worked extensively with
Lincoln Property on particular aspects of the parking structure’s design.
Shockey is typically the first subcontractor on site, but due to permit delays in
Fairfax County, construction of the residential housing had to move forward
before erection of the precast parking garage could begin. This eliminated
Shockey’s side access to the site, and made it necessary to coordinate with
a local landowner to borrow land for a drop lot. Following the residential
housing construction also meant Shockey couldn’t drop the large concrete
blocks with poles known as “dead men” to use as bracing during erection of
the precast components. Shockey coordinated with the Engineer of Record
to brace the precast against areas of the residential housing structures slab on
grade. Precast erection began on October 15, 2014, and was completed on
December 15, 2014.

2015 Parking Structure Design Guide Now Available
Shockey Precast’s 2015 Parking Structure Design Guide is here! Originally
published in 2008, SPG’s Parking Structure Design Guide has served as a
valuable resource to owners, designers, engineers, and general contractors
for the past seven years. While not intended to be a substitute for project
drawings, the PSDG offers clear, practical information intended to inspire
and guide in the design of a precast parking structure. The updated 2015
PSDG features new project photos, case studies, and current SPG structural
specifications, as well as detailed information regarding color, texture, and
finishes available with precast. To request your copy, visit shockeyprecast.com ,
