New England, which stands for history, charm and stability combines hope,
ambitions and technology to create a growing and prosperous place to live.
Hudson, which is often associated with its neighboring community of
Nashua, has come into its own as a thriving industrial and commercial
center, at the same time maintaining the neighbor helping neighbor spirit.
History of Hudson
The first grant of land was made in 1661 to Joseph Hills. The first
settlement in Hudson was around 1672. The old town of Dunstable in
Massachusetts included the present Town of Hudson, and was incorporated
October 16, 1673.
Gradually more people settled to the east of the Merrimack River and in
1731, they petitioned to be set off in a separate township. The petition was
granted and the new town was incorporated January 4, 1733, under the
name of Nottingham, which included the present town of Hudson, as well as
parts of Tyngsboro, Pelham, and Litchfield.
There was a town called Nottingham in the eastern part of New Hampshire
before the new boundary line was determined, so after the annexation, the
name caused considerable confusion. Accordingly, on July 5, 1746, the
General Court chartered the new town of Nottingham West, having much
the same boundaries as the present town of Hudson. The name Hudson
was chosen because of its position near the Merrimack River, once
supposed to flow east from the Hudson River.
The people became dissatisfied with the new name and in 1830 the name
of the town was changed to Hudson. Therefore, the history of Hudson, New
Hampshire once was part of Dunstable, Massachusetts from 1673 to 1733;
from 1733 to 1741, it was known as Nottingham, New Hampshire; from
1746 to 1830 it was known as Nottingham West, New Hampshire; and from
1830 on known as Hudson, New Hampshire.

New Hampshire’s most famous statesman was Daniel Webster.
Amoskeag Mills in Manchester was once the largest textile mill
in the world.
A chemical change accounts for the fall season’s bright colors.
The brilliant red of maples happens when; the warmth of fall days,
sugar is produced in the leaves and then trapped by the night’s chill.
The more sugar that accumulates, the brighter red the leaves turn
creating beautiful foliage.
NH is one of the 13 original states
Settled in 1623
First to declare independence from Britain in early 1776.
In 1853 Franklin Pierce was elected 14th President, the only NH
native to ever hold office.
NH is 9,304 square miles with 234 towns and cities, rural flavor
predominates.
NH has 1,300 lakes and ponds with 40,000 miles of rivers and
streams and 17.8 miles of Atlantic Ocean.
The highest mountain peaks in the Northeast, 86 major peaks in
the White Mountains, with Mt. Washington at 6,288’ the highest.
NH has 45 covered bridges.
New Hampshire’s natural resources and recreational opportunities are
legendary from skiing, boating, snowmobiling, swimming, fishing, hiking,
camping, sightseeing and just about any other conceivable outdoor and
indoor recreational activity. Of course, many visitors to NH prefer to sit
back and take in the beautiful scenery especially during the fall “leaf
peepers” season.
GUIDE FOR NEW HAMPSHIRE RESIDENTS
Residency
No formal procedure for establishing legal residency exists in New
Hampshire. A driver’s license, the appearance of a person’s name on a city
or town street list, a voter or vehicle registration form, and rent, utility,
mortgage or telephone bills normally provide tangible proof of residence.
However, individual public or private agencies or institutions may have their
own requirements for proof of residence. Information about communities in
the Sate of NH can be found on the State’s official website: www.nh.gov
Voter Registration
If you are a United States citizen, a New Hampshire resident and you will be
18 years old on or before Election Day, you may register to vote in New
Hampshire at your city or town hall as soon as you have established an
address in the state. Voter registration is open until ten days before the
election. You must register again only if you move or change your name.

Automobiles
Registration
New Hampshire residents are required to register their cars every year.
Before going to the Division of Motor Vehicles, you must register your
automobile at your city or town hall. New residents will need proof of
residence, the car’s title and your out-of-state registration. The municipal
registration fee is pro-rated according to the year and make of the vehicle.
The Division of Motor Vehicles fee is based on the weight of the vehicle.
You will have 60 days in which to transfer a registration. After registering
the car, you can arrange for automobile insurance. New Hampshire is not a
compulsory insurance state.
Inspection
Within ten day after registering your car in New Hampshire, you must have
it inspected at any automobile repair shop or gas station displaying an
Official New Hampshire Inspection Station sign.
Driver’s License
To obtain a New Hampshire driver’s license, you will not be required to take
a driving test or a written examination if you have a valid license from any
state in the United States or province of Canada. You must obtain a license
application at your town clerk’s office (Hudson Town Clerk - 886-6003), fill it
out and mail it to the Division of Motor Vehicles at 23 Hazen Drive,
Concord, New Hampshire. The Registry will make an eye test appointment
for you, and if you pass the test, a four-year photo license will be issued.
The local Department of Motor Vehicles for these appointments is located
at 110 Broad Street, Nashua; hours of operation are 8am to 4:30 pm. The

Transportation
Highways
New Hampshire has 4,200 miles of highways, including interstate 95,
located near the coastline and connecting New Hampshire with
Massachusetts and Maine. The major highway, Interstate 93, runs north
and south, linking the state with Massachusetts and northern Vermont.
Interstate 89 provides convenient access from the capital city of Concord to
Vermont.
Airports
Manchester • Boston Regional Airport (www.flymanchester.com) provides
major airline service for the state, and commuter airlines service airports in
Concord, Keene, Laconia, Lebanon and Nashua. Eight local airports are
also located in the state and are monitored by the New Hampshire
Aeronautics Commission. International flights are available at Logan
Airport in Boston, Massachusetts.
Public Transportation
Local bus lines operate in Manchester and Nashua. Nashua to Boston Bus

Education
Public Schools
The state requires school attendance for children between the ages of six
and 16. According to state regulations, a child must be enrolled in school if
he/she is six years old before September 30 of any year.
Hudson offers four elementary schools housing grades one through fifth
grade; a middle school for grades six through eight; and a high school for
grades nine through twelve. Alvirne High School (www.alvirnehs.org) is
highly regarded academically and boasts a regional vocation center. The

Private Schools

Higher Education
Twenty-four institutions of higher learning, public and private, are located in
New Hampshire. The state institutions include a university and two to fouryear state colleges. To be eligible for the resident tuition rate, the applicant
must prove residency and 12 months domicile in New Hampshire prior to
the date of enrolling in the state college or university. NH Postsecondary

Recreation
The town recreation center is located at 4 Oakwood Street, 880-1600, website:
www.hudsonrec.com. Summer programs as well as soccer, basketball, softball, t-ball and
volleyball is offered through the center for school age children and adults. Tennis courts for
Hudson residents are available behind Alvirne High School and on School Street near Dr. H.O.
Smith School. Beach/Picnic area at the Robinson Pond, Robinson Road. Sandy beach and picnic
tables as well as fishing boat launch.
