On the way home another stop in Mineola again for a visit with Kay and Neal Hargrove. Peggy reports that it is great to be with family and friends on Thanksgiving. The folks in Pecan Gap survived after being without electricity 4 days and without water 2 days. There was a lot of “togetherness” during this time as folks that had gas heat willingly shared their warmth with those that had all electric homes. I know this kind jester was shared in other communities just like ours and it makes you wonder if this ice storm was sent our way for a purpose. A steady hum of chain saws fills the air as folks all around are gradually getting their limbs cut and hauled off. Mark your calendar for these upcoming events! SundayDecember 22, 8:45 am-bring your breakfast snacks and join folks at the Methodist Church Annex for breakfast prior to the Community Choir Christmas Music which begins at 9:30 am. First Baptist will not have Sunday School but will join the Methodist for the Christmas Music. First Baptist WILL have their regular morning worship services on the 22nd starting at the usual time of 11:00 am. December 24, 5:00 pm there will be a Community Candlelight Service at First Baptist Church Pecan Gap. Everyone is invited to all services. The community is saddened with the passing of Philip Langston of Dallas. Family visitation will be Monday night at Delta Funeral and the services will be at the United Methodist Church of Pecan Gap Tuesday, December 17, 2:00 pm. Our sympathy is expressed to this family. Philip was the son of the late Corrine and Carl Langston and he grew up in the Pecan Gap area. Our sympathy is expressed to Wayne, Lynn, and Ben Cornitius in the passing of Wayne's mother, Autherine Cornitius. Keep them in your prayers. Bobby and Billie McCarrell attended the college graduation of their grandson Jessie Plumlee Friday night. Jessie graduated from Sam Houston University in Huntsville, Texas. Also attending were Jessie's parents Jason and Kayla Plumlee. Congratulations to Gary Don Erwin and family on the college graduation of granddaughter, Victoria McReynolds, who graduated from East Texas Baptist University December 14th. And, grandson, Kaleb McReynolds, who graduated from USMC Aircraft Mechanic School on December 20th. Nelda Campbell and Billie McCarrell attended the Christmas Music Program of the North Lamar High School Choir witch took place December 15, 3:00 pm at the East Paris Baptist Church. Nelda's granddaughter, Joy Merritt, sang in the Varsity Choir. Three choirs with approximately 150 students sang and the music was beautiful. Joy is a senior student at North Lamar and is an “A” student. Local, Dependable Happy Birthday Wishes December People! Here we are back in the 21st Century after a time of reliving the ‘good ol’ days’. For a time there we were without electricity and any kind of phone service as we listened to the ice taking down our trees. Broken limbs fell across the streets. They also fell across many electric lines and phone lines, pulling meters from houses. If the Dallas and Ft. Worth area TV stations were prone to show good news they could have found many unsung heroes had they come to Ladonia. Neighbors, even some from other towns, and the LVFD, watched out for people who needed help. Since many homes are all electric, the fire department set up generators at the Fire Station and invited those who had no heat to come there for warmth. It is never wise to name names because some who deserve to be honored might inadvertently be left off the list, but I must name a few of the ones who helped me as well as others. Triena Duncan and her handsome son Micah came by to offer help. Neighbor across the street Anita Akers and her beautiful daughter came to help and picked up some soy milk for me when they went out of town. Of course neighbors across the street Tom and Oma Hulsey brought soup and offered help. Bill and Betty Crews came from Yowell to check on Betty’s sister and brother-in-law, Sarah and Gene Rhea and the young couple, Elias and Holly Jeter Roderiguiz, who bought their former home (all electric) and then by to offer help to me. Grandson Blake Shaw came over and picked up limbs that were in the driveway then came back and worked with electrician Jeff Timcot in replacing the electric meter which had been ripped from the wall. Mandy and the girls came over, and after six days without a land line and DSL a very nice A T & T employee came to restore phone service. Glen and Lily Wolfe continued their work in caring for homeless animals. The eleventh commandment came from Jesus when he told us to love one another as He has loved us. It is at times like this more than at any other time that we obey that commandment. There are so many thank yous to be said that it would be impossible to do, so may I just say God bless you, everyone. Lesa Lawhon works one day a week at the Pharmacy in Leonard. Jerry and Carol Scoggins make their home there and she sees them on that day. Please be in prayer for Jerry as he has health problems. Jerry is a 1958 graduate of Ladonia High School. Fern Hill broke her hip in a fall at her home and was in ICU at TMC in Denison Saturday awaiting surgery. She is in critical condition and she and the Hill family need our prayers. Sympathy is extended to them all. Several of the events planned for December 14th were canceled due to the conditions of the streets and yards from the ice storm. The Dec. 14th Home Tour was cancelled as was the Dec 5th Christmas tree lighting on the square. The scheduled parade was held Saturday afternoon. Due to the weather it was shorter than usual, but very nice. The Christmas play was presented by First Baptist Ladonia on the evening of Dec. 14th and during worship services Dec. 15th. There was a good crowd present for the night performance and it received many compliments. Sunday morning it was well received also, even if there were technical difficulties. Hayden Thomas did a good job directing the play, all the actors played their parts well and it WAS “The Christmas Story.” Casey Crumb was handsome in his dress blues which he wore to the Marine Ball before coming to Ladonia on leave to be with family for Christmas. He is the grandson of Jim and Debby Crofford. Birthday greetings (belated) on Dec. 13th to Marsha Runnels, Erin Davis and Jackie Askew Hubbard; on Dec 14th to Karmon Marcom, Lynda Bradshaw Bishop, Tracy Smith and Paul Doyle; on Dec. 15th to Billy Clyde Carter and Steve Youngblood; Dec. 16th to Lyndol Erwin, Chris Cuba, Robbie Smith Holloway, Josh Hedden and Jim Blackmon; Dec. 17th Gary Nichols; Dec. 18th Jerry Fields and Dec. 19th; Randy Roberts, Nanette Verner and James Allen Hemby; On to next week---Dec. 20th Linda Marcom and Dennis Thomas; Dec. 22nd Brad Daugherty; and on Dec. 24th Robbie Duncan Noble, Cody Dawson, Lori Kinniard, Mary Scarborough, Michael Hubbard and Jon McDonald. Happy Wedding Anniversary on Dec. 16th to Ricky and Mary Snell; on Dec. 17th to Tom and Mary Brunz; on Dec. 21st to B. H. and Nancy Price and on Dec 27th to Jim and Debby Crofford and James and Mary Campell. Thanks to Mr. Milton and Patsy and all the good people at Oak Ridge Church of Christ for the huge meal of barbecue and trimmings plus dessert from their after Church services lunch at the former home of Johnnie and the late Ed Fink. Everything was delicious. Thanks to Kathy Belinowski and a group from Dial Baptist Church who were caroling in the area and stopped by. One of the joys of the season is hearing Christmas carols. They were on a trailer decorated with Christmas lights which were very festive and the singing was beautiful. Travis Shaw is a registered nurse but now teaches others in the use of computers in medicine. His home is in Tennessee, but he traveled to three places in Texas for the teaching assignments—Austin, Houston and Dallas. Although he worked a number of hours he was able to visit a while with cousin Bettina Crews in Austin and his mother Martha Shaw in Garland. In the meantime, his wife Tiffany Shaw received a trophy and an award because she has worked at the company for five years. Why brave the huge crowds at WalMart? Try the stores in Ladonia. Some lovely gifts could be found at Granny’s Place, The Imporium, The Christmas Store and the This and That Resale Shop. Stamps from the Ladonia Post Office make a nice gift, and Gloria’s Kitchen would probably sell gift cards for meals there. It is possible to find something at East Side also. Shop locally. Holiday 2013 Don't Drink & Drive Campaign This year, TxDOT, Santa, and Santa's reindeer have an important message for Texas drivers: Don't drive if you're Tipsy, Buzzed or "Blitzen"; call a cab or get a sober ride home instead. For the 16th consecutive year, TxDOT is sponsoring a holiday-themed public education campaign to remind Texans not to get behind the wheel if they've been drinking. From December 1st until January 1st, which includes the Christmas and New Year's holidays, Santa is not the only one who'll be busy. Law enforcement agencies will be making an extra effort to spot-and stop-drunk drivers. In Texas during December 2012, more than 37,000 traffic crashes injured 18,000 people and killed 240 more. Of the 3,089 fatalities on Texas roads in 2009, 956 were the result of alcohol-related crashes. This makes alcohol a factor in 30.9 percent of the fatal crashes in Texas . Penalties for a first-time DWI offense include driver's license suspension for up to one year, a fine of up to $2,000 and up to six months in jail. Santa's other helpers in the DWI-prevention campaign include the Texas Restaurant Association, Texas Petroleum Marketers and Convenience Store Association, Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission and Texas Department of Public Safety. A drunk driving arrest, a car crash, or a trip to the emergency room is definitely not on anyone's wish list! Our wish list includes a safe holiday season for everyone. We are reminding drivers to celebrate responsibly and let someone else drive if they have been drinking. Our advice is simple: Designate a sober driver in advance or call a cab to get home safely. Follow all seatbelt laws and Please don’t drink and drive. The Police Department Dear Santa, How are you? I am happy! I have tried my best to be super for my family and for my teacher this year. Reason for the Season By: Reuben Trussell, Pecan Gap Jess and Gail were visiting family for Christmas. One of their granddaughters asked her grandmother, "how did the human race appear?' Gail answered, 'God made Adam and Eve and they had children and so was all mankind made." Two days later the girl asked her grandfather the same question. Jess knew what Gail had said and decided to have some fun. He answered his granddaughter, "Many years ago there were monkeys from which the human race evolved." Now the little girl was confused and she returned to her grandmother and said, "Grandmother how is it possible that you told me the human race was created by God, and Grandpa Jess said they developed from monkeys?" Gail thought for a minute and answered, "Well, dear, it is very simple. I told you about my side of the family and your grandfather told you about his." Christmas Is a Time for Worship Jesus truly is the reason for Christmas. We celebrate Christmas as the “birthday” of Jesus, our Savior, God’s Son. We celebrate with the giving Wishing you the very merriest Christmas ever! Merry Christmas & Happy 2014! 803 E. Main Honey Grove Cooper Sorrells Funeral Home this past weekend. The Falcons defeated Union Hill in the first round . Rivercrest defeated 378-2291 583-5555 and receiving of gifts. It seems strange that this is the one birthday celebration where gifts are not given to the birthday person. You may have heard it said, “I don’t know what to give her. She has everything!” Perhaps you have said that about someone. When it comes to Jesus it seems more true than ever. What do you give Jesus, The Son of God? He already has everything. The ONE gift He would like to have, one that He may not have received yet, is YOU. Jesus came to give Hope and Peace and to bring Love to this world. The Hope He brings gives meaning to our lives. He brings Hope that when our bodies grow old and crippled and diseased, there is something better that has been prepared for us … for YOU. At His birth, Jesus brought mankind a gift from God, the gift of LIFE. Read in the Bible, Colossians 1:27, “To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory …” The Peace that He brings is not peace between nations or families or neighbors. He brings us Peace that the world cannot give and cannot take away. He brings Peace that passes understanding. Read in the Bible, John 14:27,” Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” And, Philippians 4:7, “And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” Jesus brings to YOU and to the world, a peace of the mind and heart. It is Peace between You and God. It is the Hope of Peace that brings you a Home in Heaven, when you accept the Gift of Love that God gives us. Love … the words of mankind fail in the effort to describe and understand this Love that is Yours through the birth of Jesus. John 3:16 reads, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” This is God’s Love, a Love that has more thought of you than anything else. Jesus died for or sins, that we might have forgiveness and Eternal Life He had to be born in order to die. Jesus gave up the splendor of Heaven to be born in Bethlehem, that He might die for you and the entire world, that we might have an Eternal Home in Heaven! John 14:2-6, “In my Father's house are many mansions; I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. Jesus saith, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” WOW! What a Gift! Here is what God and Jesus want in return … YOU. They want you to surrender your heart, your life to God and receive Eternal Life … and receive Heaven. Do you want to know more? Attend church this Sunday.
