August 2007 / www.guidetogeorgia.com / GUIDE TO GEORGIA 3 METRO ATLANTA CALENDAR Dixieland Fun Park Near Fayetteville DixieLand Fun Park, a 25 acre family entertainment center located in Fayetteville, features a Scream ‘n Swing, the Drop Zone, Scrambler, Spider, Giant Slide, three go-kart tracks, bumper boats, a laser tag arena, large arcade, giant swing, antique cars, 36 holes of miniature golf, and a Dixie Zip line that slides riders from a 100 foot tower down cables that are 660 feet long. The Dixie Wildcat Roller Coaster opened late May. Small children will enjoy the Playmaze with tunnels, slides, ball pits, and stairways; kiddie arcade; and the Jr. Ferris Wheel. From the 1888 Bon Air Hotel to the 1945 Augusta Country Club to the Riverwalk of 1988 this exhibition presents a variety of views using the Museum’s extensive collections of postcards and items that highlight the tourism industry. There will be an area where children of all HAMPTON TERRACE GOLF LINKS ages will be able to design their own postcards. Also on display are Stories & Legends – Remembering the Augusta National, thru Sept. 2, and Augusta History on Canvas, thru Aug. 31. Other exhibitions include From Ty to Cal-Century of Baseball in Augusta; the Augusta Arsenal (1826-1872); and James Brown–A Memorial Tribute. Fitzgerald and the Blue & Gray Museum Located in a historical railroad depot, the Blue & Gray Museum tells through a documentary and more than 1200 artifacts the remarkable story of Fitzgerald and its Civil War roots. The Hall of Honor represents Shacktown where early pioneers lived while an exciting documentary, Marching as One, celebrates the Yank-Reb harmony story. Fitzgerald was founded in 1895 by Philander H. Fitzgerald, a Union veterans’ pension lawyer from Indiana who was seeking a warm, receptive area of the country where aging Union veterans and their families could retire in comfort. Visit the Fire Engine Museum; tour historic homes and buildings; and view a variety of architectural styles representing the settlers who came here from 38 states. National Civil War Naval Museum at Port Columbus Explore naval operations for the North and South through displays of uniforms, artillery, firearms, personal effects, flags, and Civil War ship murals. See an ironclad ram, blockade runner, gunboat, ship replicas, a paneled timeline of the war at sea, and a battle simulator theater. The Cool History weekend on Aug. 4-5 will focus on the infamous raider, the CSS Alabama, which for two years attacked Northern merchant shipping. Capt. Semmes and his ship captured or destroyed more than 60 Northern vessels and was chased around the world by U.S. Navy warships. During this Cool History, visitors will be a part of his second command that took place off the coast of the Azores in the eastern Atlantic. The museum will fire its huge naval cannon several times during the weekend. Railway Museum in Duluth “Georgia’s Official Transportation History Museum” has over 80 pieces of retired railway rolling stock: trains from the 1920’s and 1950’s, vintage steam and diesel locomotives, passenger and private cars, WWII troop kitchen, railway post office car, wooden freight cars, maintenance of way equipment, busses, and trolleys. The museum is home to MARTA’s historic bus fleet which includes busses from many of the predecessor systems to MARTA. Train rides aboard restored cabooses are complimentary with admission. Two Atlanta Chapter National Railway Historical Society (N.R.H.S.) meetings are scheduled each month. These are not just for chapter members – the general public is welcome. This 23rd annual juried show will feature the work of over 200 artists and craftsmen from around the USA including fine art, paintings, jewelry, pottery, quilts, furniture, clothing, florals, baskets, dolls, and other unique gift items. Entertainment will feature bands, cloggers, dancers, and singers. The Market Place will offer fresh produce, flowers, and homemade goodies such as jellies and jams, relishes, and fudge. The Concession Area will include a variety of food from Cajun treats to fruit smoothies to roasted corn. The Children's Area will have inflatable games, face painting, rock climbing, pony rides, steam engine train rides, and hands-on activities. Kicking off the festival on Friday night will be a concert at 7 p.m. by Freddie Way. The concert will have free admission with a toy for Toys For Tots or a monetary donation. Concessions will be available for sale that night. On Saturday the festival will feature live music all day as well as kiddie rides, face painters, arts, crafts, demonstrations by a chainsaw artist, and plenty of food. An Art Alley will feature area artists including potters, painters, and crafters of fine jewelry. A Hayride will go to the Historic Chenocetah Tower where people can get off and tour the tower which is owned by the Forestry Service. This Chattahoochee River challenge starts at 10 a.m. on August 11 at Medlock Bridge Park just outside of Peachtree Corners off GA 141 and only 15 miles from Sandy Springs. It will end 90+ miles downstream at Franklin, Georgia. Paddle until the sun goes down, paddle til the sun comes back up, and then paddle till it’s over! If you think you’re tough enough. . . “Do it and then talk about it” says organizer and guide Richard Grove. The only shuttle will be at the end of the 24 hours. There will be 20 minute stops after each four hours of paddling. This is not a race; the group will paddle together. The trip is limited to 20 experienced paddlers, and kayaks are preferred. Grove will begin a 500 mile solo trip September 21 from Lake Lanier to Apalachicola, Florida. He will be celebrating Lake Lanier’s 50th anniversary and promoting PHOTO BY JIM DEAN the first S.E. Tri-State Water Trail and arriving in Apalachicola on October 20 for their Annual River Expo. Paddlers are welcome to join him on any section of the trip which is intended to raise interest in river conservation.
