As
it
normally does,
the New Year
has
started
with a flurry of
activities for our members and
our Club. There are many things I
would like to share with you this
month and I will cover as much
as my allotted space will allow.
First I would like to express
my thanks and appreciation to
Judy and Eric Engberg. For the
past eight years Judy has been
the editor of the PoopDeck and
Eric has provided his support as
staff photographer. This dynamic
duo has decided to retire from
these roles. They leave behind a
legacy of outstanding member
commitment and involvement for
the untold amount of time they
devoted to their tasks. Thank you
both for all that you have done!
I would also like to thank Mary
Jo Smith and introduce her as the
new PoopDeck editor. Please give
her your support as she steps into
these giant shoes.
Last month Ken Nyhus
mentioned
that
we
were
negotiating
a
year
round
reciprocity agreement with the
Bradenton Country Club. That
agreement was finalized and
became effective on January 1,
2012. BYC members may now
play golf on a year round basis
at the Bradenton Country Club
and we also have use of dining
facilities, tennis courts and
swimming pool. There are some
restrictions, so please check with
the BYC office for details.
A major repair to the Club boat
ramp was started in late January,
and it should be completed by
the Tuesday after Super Bowl. We
may have inconvenienced a few
boaters during the repair, but I
am sure they will agree that it was
worthwhile. Plans have also been
finalized for the pool resurfacing.
Work on this project should begin
on February 1st and will last about
two weeks. This timing minimizes
user disruption while the weather
is still cool and pool usage is at a
low point.
I promised to keep you updated
on our Finances throughout the
year and here are a few highlights
from our first 6 months of
operation. Total income is above
budget primarily due to fuel sales
and food sales. We are slightly
below budget on dues income
because our membership level has
dropped below plan. Our costs of
sales (food, bar and fuel) have been
controlled well and as a result our
gross margin is only $2,000 below
budget. We have experienced
some unfavorable variances on
operating expenses which caused
our total operating loss to be
$19,000 worse than budget.
The level of our unfavorable
variance is relatively small when
compared to our revenue. In spite
of this, the Executive Committee,
Finance Committee and Club
Management are already working
on ways to increase revenue,
reduce expenses and get us back
on plan. You can help by actively
recruiting your friends to join the
BYC and by continuing to utilize

Some important Club events
have been scheduled and I am
sharing them now so you can
mark your calendar. First is the

Awards
banquet
which
has
been
scheduled for Friday April 27th. At
this annual event both perpetual
awards and new awards are
presented to honor outstanding
sailors, power boaters, fishermen,
general members and Great
Mates. On the following Tuesday
evening (May 1st) we will hold
the Bradenton Yacht Club Annual
Meeting. With a very full Club
calendar for the next few months,
we are still working to schedule
the annual Memorial Service and
Blessing of the Fleet.

There are several changes to
tell you about in the month of
February. Our Boat Ramp will be
closed for the first week, as Total
Quality Marine repairs and extends
the ramp. This will be very beneficial for some of our
bigger trailer boats, who have really had to be careful
that their boat trailer did not fall off of the end. We
apologize for the inconvenience but the winter low
tides and the process dictated our timing. Harry
advises that the ramp should not be closed for more
than a week, weather permitting….
Speaking of timing, we will be closing the pool
during the same time frame to have it refinished. The
pool will be closed 1½ to 2 weeks, but will reopen
with a beautiful interior, new lights and ladders,
and a big, beautiful tile mosaic BYC Burgee in the
shallow end! We appreciate all of the members’
understanding during this process, and I know we
all look forward to seeing how wonderful the project
turns out. This, along with the installation of the
three new geothermal pool heaters, will hopefully
keep the pool looking and working great for many
years to come.
We now have year round reciprocity with Bradenton
Country Club (BCC), with benefits to members of
both clubs. BYC Member privileges include:
· Full use of the BCC’s food and beverage facilities
for a la carte dining and banquet events, including
special member events, on a space available basis,
year round.
· Reciprocal use of the BCC golf course May 1 –
October 31, for $25.00 per BYC Member and
guests, plus a cart fee, and for $50.00 per BYC
Member and guests, plus a cart fee, November
1 through April 30. BYC Members can play the
BCC Course November 1 through April 30 on
Thursday, Saturday and Sunday after 12:00 pm
only. BYC Members must reserve tee times by
contacting the BCC pro shop.
· Use of the BCC pool and tennis courts at no
charge, on a space available basis, year round.
BCC Member privileges include:
· Full use of the BYC’s food and beverage facilities
for a la carte dining and banquet events, including
special member events, on a space available basis,
year round.
· Use of the BYC pool and tennis courts at no

hours in advance.
We will be introducing some new features to
provide you with some different experiences in food
and beverage. As you know, good things sometimes
come to an end. This is the case with BYC’s Sunday
brunch. To maintain great quality, and the variety of
food we serve at Sunday Brunch, we need 60 people
to cover those costs. In an effort to provide a more
viable option on Sunday, we will be replacing the
Sunday Brunch with a special Sunday breakfast
menu. Sunday Breakfast will be available from 10:00
a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and will feature: Eggs Made to
Order, $6.99 + +, Steak & Eggs, 12.99 + +, Omelets
(your choice of, ham, bacon, sweet peppers, onions,
cheese), $6.99 + +, and a Chef’s Featured Brunch
Special (will vary weekly) to include French toast,
pancakes, biscuits and gravy, eggs Benedict, or cheese
blintzes, $6.99 + +. The Lunch Menu will also be
available inside, noon to 6:00 p.m., poolside and at
the Tiki-Bar, noon to dusk.
Also new in February, Tuesday nights will become
Tropical Tuesdays. Free Pina Colada & Mai Thai’s will
be available from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.! Dinner
starts at 5:30 p.m., featuring fun tropical foods such
as Grilled Mahi-Mahi with Tropical Fruit Salsa, Island
Curried Grouper, Mojo Pork Medallions, Island
Roasted Half Chicken, Coconut Shrimp, each dish
only $10.99 + +! Our Regular Menu will be available
too. We will also be transforming our Thursday night
Pasta Bar into Shrimp & Suds Thursdays! From 5:30
to 9:00 p.m., enjoy all you can eat Steamed Shrimp,
Fried Shrimp, Shrimp Scampi, or the Shrimp Combo
for only $14.99 + +, $1.00 Drafts, $4.99 + + Pitchers
of Domestic Bear! Regular Menu too!
For all of our members who trailer a boat, we have
several dry slips available for rent. These dry slips
rent for $56.50 per month. All have easy in and out
access, and with the gate key, you have access to our
ramp 24/7. For more information on which dry slips
are available, please contact Brent, our Dockmaster.
Finally, be sure to check out some of the great
entertainment events in February, including Greek
International Night (February 4), Sweetheart Dinner
Dance (February 11) and Dueling Pianos (February

On New Year’s Day our sailors hosted a BYOB
(breakfast) buffet at 0900 hours where we shared war
stories about the prior night’s festivities. In years gone
by the starting horn would sound at 1100 hours for
our annual Red Eye Regatta. Unfortunately, this year
the wind must have had a horrible hangover from
the night before and never got out of bed that day.
Consequently, our race was cancelled, however the
party went on.
In December we completed our Fall Racing series.

On Saturday March 10th BYC is hosting our Annual
Around Egmont Classic Race. What makes this race
most challenging is that the entrants must decide
on whether to round Egmont clockwise or a counter
clockwise course using their ability to predict wind and
tidal current. This is a GREAT LOW KEY RACE for our
larger boats who are confined racing in the Manatee
River and like the open bay and gulf to spread their
sails. Come on out this year and have some fun. You

After having a month off per
se for the holidays, I feel quite
rested and am looking forward
to a “New Year of Boating.” With
the weather for most of January
being slightly above normal, I was reminded to
start looking and booking our summer cruises for
this upcoming year. I have also been working on the
extended cruise on a cruise line ship for later this
summer for the power fleet and other BYC members
who choose to join us. More on that in next month’s
article.
Don’t forget that the power fleet meetings are
held on the second Tuesday of every month. Make
your reservations early. We give away a $35 BYC gift
certificate at every Power Fleet meeting.

Members of the BYC Power Fleet toasted the
return of Rick and Charlene Hoffmeister at the
New Year’s Eve Gala.

Downtown St. Petersburg is
a fun place to visit, loaded with
eateries, museums and pubs
where you can get your fill of
art as well as wine. In the center
of all these experiences is the SPYC. It was just the
right venue to create a great January excursion.
Cool weather for walking, shopping and even some
exercise. The sail cruise fleet held our weekend to
SPYC on January 13-15. As usual, Dock master Adam
Harnen was quite accommodating, arranging all our
needs including dinner reservations. SPYC recently
renovated and significantly changed their main
dining venue to a more contemporary American
Bistro type feel with rich dark woods, built in wine
coolers and a warm bar area within the dining
area. The “1909 Grille Room” proved to be a great
choice for our group Friday night. One of dinner’s
highlights, a 2008 Rombauer Cabernet that melted
in your mouth. Knowing it was 50 degrees outside
enhanced the experience. While this vintage wasn’t
on the wine list, Cricket Clifton had a hunch that a

few bottles could be had. That’s cruising know-how.
Saturday included a walk to the market, chock full
of everything from dog sweaters to great street food
and fresh veggies. Later in the evening, the basement
of Ceviche (across the street from SPYC) had a
Flamenco guitar quartet which paired well with
equally rich Spanish wines.
After all this fun, the best part is we were able to
enjoy a great sail back to the Manatee River and the
best venue around, the BYC. Oh, did I mention we
got back in
time to enjoy
the
great
Chili Cookoff of 2012.
It was a great
effort by all
who entered,

to
the winners.

Entertainment
February is going to be a
fabulous month for entertainment
at the BYC. We begin the month on
February 4th with the next in our
series of International Dinners and this month we
are going to Greece. The International Dinners have
been a huge success and well attended. This small
dinner group has grown from 24 to 54 enthusiastic
attendees. The food and ambience at each event has
been superb. Last month was magnificent with the
Brazilian dinner served on swords. Greece will not
be disappointing to say the least. Chef Keith has
prepared an amazing menu of Greek delights. If you
are interested in attending please make reservations so
that the Club can properly prepare. And remember to
bring your Palatable Passport to keep in the running
for the private wine dinner for four!
Romance lives on at the BYC when you celebrate
Valentine’s Day on Saturday, February 11th. It will be
a full night of entertainment, starting with tenor Joe
Spinella singing your favorite romantic songs. This is
an encore event for Joe who brought the house down
with his amazing voice at La Dolce Vita. The evening
continues as the romantic couples take center stage
for their vow renewals and then we spend the rest of
the night dancing to Shaman. All in all it is a little bit
of everything for you that night with other surprises
thrown into the mix. Valentine’s Day is a very popular
night at the BYC and this year is sure to be a sell out.
Remember that those with the earliest reservations get
the best seats!
Mark your calendar for February 25th for what is
sure to be the biggest event of the year. The BYC is
very excited to announce the appearance of Mark &

This month’s Poopdeck marks
a major transition in BYC history:
the BYC is not only losing a
talented and steadfast editor, but a
whole journalistic team. Both Judy
and Eric Engberg are retiring from the Poopdeck as
editor and photo department. They hope to spend
more time on their Grand Banks 36’ Copycat and
with their grandchildren.
Judy has been putting the Poopdeck together
-- writing, editing, cropping, and the dozens of
things that make it work -- under the watch of eight
Commodores.
Judy and Eric met at and graduated from the famed
University of Missouri School of Journalism (1962)
and married shortly thereafter. Judy became a
working reporter and editor while Eric went toward
TV and eventually became a national news and
political correspondent for CBS Evening News. Judy
focused on raising their three sons while Eric went
to the hotspots of the world. Upon retirement, they
moved from Bethesda, MD to Bradenton and became
members of BYC in 2002. Our gain!

Within a few years, Judy started editing the
Poopdeck and made it into the finest publication in
the FCYC (in my humble opinion). She served on the
BYC Board for four years and received the Admiral’s
Hat award for outstanding service in 2009. That’s a
stack of accomplishments for one person.

and
creative
contributions as we
go forward, but look
forward to seeing
them often at the

Museums “Loebenberg Humanitarian Award.” She
was also named Humanitarian of the Year by the
Judeo Christian Health Clinic. The Association of
Fundraising Professionals created the “Gayle Sierens
Volunteer of the Year” award in her honor. She was
named a “Woman of Distinction” by Girl Scouts of
America, Suncoast chapter.
Our 11th Annual Community Outreach (CO)
Event is shaping up to be the best ever under the
guidance of Nancy Christian. The next scheduled
meeting of the CO Committee is Tuesday, February
21st. These events typically sell out so don’t miss
your opportunity to attend the March 3rd- Rock the
Kasbah event. You can contact me for ticket and

a new event called Hot Chef’s Under Fire on March

Wear were fabulous and everyone
looked beautiful! Our February 16th luncheon will
feature a very special guest; Gayle Sierens co-anchor
News Channel 8’s “News Channel 8 at 5”, 6 and 11
PM newscasts. Sierens joined the Channel 8 staff
in 1977 as a weekend sports anchor/reporter and
became the 11 PM weekday sports anchor in March
of 1983. In addition to these responsibilities, she
free-lanced as a play-by-play announcer for ESPN,
the cable sports network. In October of 1985, Sierens
made the transition from sportscaster to news anchor.
In 1984, she was honored with a
Florida Emmy Award for sports
reporting. In 1991, as a news
anchor, she won her second
Emmy for news reporting.
Sierens was the first woman to do
play-by-play for an NFL football
game and also appeared on “NFL
Live” on NBC. Gayle was the

Hot Chefs Under Fire!
Elimination Round
Thursday, March 15
One (1) Tapas of contestant’s choice,
pre-prepared off site, brought in and served to
3 Judges. Top 5 finalists will move on to the
Main Event.
Main Event
Friday, March 23
• Chefs will be provided gas powered hot
plates, 2 shared microwaves, shared grill
outside & serving dishes. All other equipment
is responsibility of chef.
• Chefs will be provided with 15 pantry items
and allowed to bring in 5 additional ingredients
of their choice to the Main Event
• One secret Ingredient will be given to each
chef at the beginning of The Final Round. This
ingredient must be used to
prepare a dish of their choosing.
• Contestants will have 30
minutes to complete their dish. Great Mates
