New Engines on Samand
Powerful and fuel efficient XUM engines are going to replace
XU7 ones to promote IKCO cars to Euro IV standards.
Mir Javad Soleimani, IKCO vice-president in quality and
product development in this regard said, «Currently XU7
is mounted on Samand and Peugeot 405 sedans, however
IKCO aims to promote its cars emission standard to Euro IV
by designing and developing XUM engines.
The company’s daily production of Samand and Peugeot
405 is more than 1600 units, some of which is going to be
outfitted with XUM engines and the rest will enjoy EF7 and
TU5 engines under the hood.
XUM is a 1900cc engine that comes in two types of gasoline
and bi-fuel types and meets Euro IV standard requirements.
Despite the boosted capacity, the engine has been optimized
and its intake is the same as XU7 and close to 8.7l/100km.
The related performance and durability tests have been
recently accomplished on the engine and it is going to
function on IKCO cars for a two-month test period. XUM
will be mass-produced by late June 2012.
Micro-hybrid Samand in the Market
IKCO kicked off marketing
Iran’s first micro-hybrid car.
Nima Mosleh, IKCO deputy
CEO in NPD center (New
Products’ Development) in
this regard said, «Hybrid
development is a part of IKCO’s
approach
toward
modern
technology to reduce fossil fuel
consumption.»
Hybrid car production is a part
of IKCO’s strategy to confront
the price rise of energy carriers
following the Rationalization of
Subsidies Plan in Iran. IKCO
had previously heightened its
CNG vehicles in this regard.
Last year, 50 micro-hybrid
Samand sedans, all of which
passed different types of tests
successfully were produced.
«Start-stop system is the main
specification of micro-hybrid
cars,» Mosleh said and then
referred to the battery, ignition
system, instrument panel and
the main harness as some other
modified parts and components in
micro-hybrid cars, emphasizing
the installation of these parts on
XU7 engine which will be used
on EF7 engines later.»
Mosleh reiterated that micro-
hybrid
Samand
shuts
down at speeds lower than
five kilometers per hour
automatically. This is most
advantageous for vehicles
which
spend
significant
amounts of time waiting at
traffic lights or frequently come
to a stop in traffic jams.
Two sensors, one on the gearbox
and the other on the booster,
control stop-start process when
stopping and stepping on the
clutch to restart.
The CEO finally underscored
that IKCO has fulfilled all the
related programs and activities
and the company will mass
produce this car in near future,
while producing taxis that enjoy
this system will be focused on.

Production
Diesel Samand to be
Produced This Year
The New Product Development center of Iran
Khodro is modifying IKCO diesel engine for
Samand. As soon as passing the required tests,
Iran’s first diesel car will enter into pre-production
phase this year.
Javad Najmeddin, IKCO CEO in this regard
said, «The main activities regarding diesel
engine project are being accomplished in IKCO
Powertrain Company and qualified auto part and
component producers have been singled out.»
IKCO diesel engine meets Euro V standard
requirements. This 1500cc engine produces 90
Kw of power. Its torque reaches 256 Nm and it
sips only 5.2 liters of fuel per 100 Km.
Due to the importance of providing proper
fuel, Euro IV and V standard-approved fuel
will be accordingly provided by Iran’s ministry
of petroleum next year while the Ministry has
participated in the design and development
process of this engine.
IKCO intends to mass produce diesel passenger
cars in less than two years. The company’s diesel
engine would be suitable for segment D cars like
Samand, Soren and Dena.
Extensive changes have been made to Samand
for the calibration of diesel engine. All parts
and components will be replaced in engine and
powertrain system, while IKCO powertrain
company is to design a new transmission system
to line up with the diesel engine.
So far, 23 sets of this diesel engine have been
produced, three of which have been mounted
on IKCO cars to pass required tests. The engine
meets euro V standard requirements.
Hybrid car, gearbox and direct injection are
the other three projects IPCO is working on.
The related studies considering these projects
have already started and the company will soon
embark on the design and development of hybrid
powertrain.
The intellectual property of EF7 engine belongs
to IKCO. It comes in CNG based, gasoline,
turbocharged and diesel types, while the first two
have already been mass produced.

would exceed to five units this year. Since the
beginning of the mass production, IKCO Fars has
produced 250 Peugeot Pars sedans.
Currently about 100 employees work in the
company, while the increase of production would
create 150 job opportunity in every working shift.
IKCO Fars is IKCO’s fifth local production site,
the total investment for which rose to almost
60,000,000 dollars. Production capacity of IKCO
Fars exceeds 30 thousand cars per year. All
types of Peugeot 405 sedans are currently mass
produced in IKCO Fars.
Supporting private sector investors on auto
part and component production is also on the
company’s agenda, while one of the main goals
of Iran Khodro Fars is to export cars to Persian
Gulf region countries.
In line with the decentralization policy of the
government (pushing the industries out of the
capital), IKCO has already started to establish
production sites throughout the country.
IKKCO (Iran Khodro Khorassan) was IKCO’s
first out of the capital production site, established
in Khorassan province (North East of Iran) in
2004. IKKCO production capacity is 150,000
cars a year. Following that IKCO established
Iran Khodro Tabriz in 2007 and Iran Khodro
Mazandaran in 2010. The production capacities
of these two sites mount to 100 and 15 thousand
cars per annum respectively.
