TRAINING AND EQUIPMENT MANUAL COMMUNICATIONS COMPONENTS 305.002e KENWOOD TK-7150 MOBILE RADIO EFFECTIVE: SEPTEMBER 2013 PURPOSE The purpose of this policy is to familiarize members with the components, features, use, maintenance, and troubleshooting of the Kenwood TK-7150 mobile radio. APPLICATION The Kenwood TK-7150 portable radio is used on many Department apparatus. Features of the radio include: • • • • • 128 channels alpha-numeric display 45 watts power output 16 repeater tones available one direct access channel button (home channel) The 128 channels are divided into groups designed by the Communications Team to meet Department needs. The radio is capable of selecting one of the 16 CTCSS (Continuous Tone-Coded Squelch System) for accessing different repeaters. Section 305.002e Page 1 of 9 RADIO OPERATIONS Refer to the diagram below of the Kenwood TK-7150 mobile radio. Following is a summary of the functions for operating the radio: Power: Press this button once to turn on the radio; press and hold this button for one second to turn off the radio. Volume Control: Turn the volume control knob clockwise to increase the volume and counter-clockwise to decrease the volume of the radio. Channel Selector: Rotate knob to select desired channel. Display Area: The display may show the following indicators: TA SCN OS METRO FRN Indicates the radio is in Talk Around mode Indicates the scan feature is activated (“Operator Selectable” tone) Indicates the channel is in the scan list A down arrow above the channel display indicates the channel is in the scan list Channel name displayed with up to 11 characters Section 305.2e Page 2 of 9 User-Defined Buttons HC ^ TA SCN D/A OST (Home Channel) This button is preprogrammed to go directly to the main dispatch channel Changes group Talk Around, direct, or car-to-car Button used to turn scan on and off Button used to delete or add a channel from scan Hold this button down to select an Operator Selectable Tone Following is a more detailed description of the function of each button with corresponding diagram: Home Channel (HC): Press this button to go directly to the home channel from any group in the radio. Section 305.2e Page 3 of 9 Talk Around (TA): Press this button to talk directly to another radio without using a repeater (car-to-car). Notice the TA symbol in the display. Scan Feature (SCN): Press SCN to start or stop the scanning sequence. Only one group can be scanned at a time. When activating a scan, a tone sounds and the SCN icon appears on the display. When a signal is received while scanning, the scan will halt, the audio is unmuted, and the channel name appears in the display. The Kenwood TK-7150 radio has the capability to add or delete any channel from the scan list within the same group. To do so, rotate the channel selector knob to the desired channel to be added (or deleted) in scan and press the D/A (Delete/Add) button. Press once to add a channel and press once to remove the channel from scan. Section 305.2e Page 4 of 9 The steps to add or delete a channel to scan are as follows: 1. Confirm what group is going to scanned. 2. Make sure Scan is off. 3. Rotate the channel selector knob to the channel being added to scan. 4. Press the D/A button. The down arrow appears in the display and the channel is now in the scan list. Move to the next channel to add and repeat above. 5. To remove a channel from the scan list, repeat as above except once the desired channel is selected, press the D/A button. The down arrow icon will disappear from the display and the channel will be removed from the scan list. 6. After adding/deleting the desired channels, press the SCN button to enable the scanning sequence. Operator Selectable Tone (OST): Press and hold this button (for two seconds) to enable the Operator Selectable Tone function. When enabled, the display screen will blink TONE OFF. The channel selector knob is used to cycle through up to 16 custom CTCSS encode tones for access to repeaters. Once the desired tone is found, press OST to select the tone. The display screen will revert to the channel selected and the OS label will be seen in the upper, right portion of the display. The OST can be disabled by pressing the OST button. Note: The Kenwood TK-7150 radio is not programmed currently to memorize the selected OST. Once the OST is selected for a particular channel, it will be erased if the channel is changed or the radio power turned off.
