PUBLISHER’S NOTE
IN recent years cigarette magic has established itself as an important branch of magical
entertainment, and the publication of this new book on the subject will, we believe, be of
interest to many enthusiasts.
We have endeavoured to present the contents in a new way; and the various
descriptions contained herein should suffice to equip the reader with all the necessary
information and guidance that he may desire.
The book includes many of the author’s originations, hitherto unpublished; whilst the
versions of standard sleights are also noteworthy, being improved in just those small
details which lend finish to the performance.
It has been thought advisable, for the sake of completeness, to include some basic
sleights described in “Cigarette Magic and Manipulation,” but in such instances an
improved and more detailed description is now offered.
As regards the illustrations, they have been selected from many others as being the
most suitable for the purpose—and in conjunction with the text form a valuable
exposition of finished manipulative work.

FOREWORD
FOR two reasons in particular I am happy to write a foreword to this book.
The one being that the author is a personal friend of mine, and the other that he is a
skilled manipulator and is well able to tackle a work of this description.
This, and the fact that his first book on this subject had to be reprinted, so great was the
demand for it, should speak well for the success of this, his second.
Having seen several advance proofs, of the book, I am of the opinion that it will be
regarded as a unique work in its own field, and one which every magician will wish to
possess.
If my good wishes count for anything, its success is assured.

INTRODUCTION
PROMPTED by the success enjoyed by my previous book upon the subject of Cigarette
Manipulation, I once more take up my pen and offer a further selection of material.
For quite a number of years I have concentrated upon this type of magic, and I have
noticed that it has always been enthusiastically received—due no doubt to the fact that it
has been something of a novelty; and also for the reason that nothing is more appreciated
by audiences than effects with universally handled objects.
It is my sincere hope that all those who were kind enough to compliment me upon my
previous book will find as much food for thought in this one.

PART ONE
Unlighted Cigarette Section
Groundwork of Cigarette Magic
Before attempting to perform any of the sleights that are possible with cigarettes, either
lighted or unlighted, it is necessary that the student should first realize the simplicity that
underlies all such manipulations.
In brief, there are four divisions into which the manipulation may be segregated.
Firstly, the envanishment of the cigarette, or cigarettes. Secondly, the acquitment, a name
used to define a sleight by means of which the hands are shown apparently empty, though
they are not so in fact. Thirdly, the production, which may be of a single cigarette, or a
large quantity. Fourthly and finally, we have effects consisting of motion or change
contrary to natural laws.
It is suggested that the reader master two or three of the simpler vanishes, and then
continue with acquitments; all from the “Unlighted” section of the book. These may be
blended to form complete magical sequences. As the reader becomes more proficient, so
he may add to his repertoire.
Once a complete series can be performed with unlighted cigarettes no encouragement
whatsoever will be required for the student to commence the fascinating manoeuvres
detailed in the Second Part of this work.
Careful rehearsal will naturally be regarded as an essential. All effects, no matter how
simple they may appear to be, demand close attention and application on the part of the
performer, before they can be adequately presented to an audience.
Study the effects you wish to produce before a mirror, remembering that the mirror
will give you but one angle of vision. First do the thing that you wish to do
genuinely—then make the sleight imitate the natural movements. In this way maximum
proficiency will be attained.

Envanishment
“Perfection” Vanish.
Effect: Cigarette is held by right thumb and
forefinger (Photo 1). The cigarette is slowly inserted
into left hand (Photo 2). The left hand squeezes the
cigarette to thin air, for on opening, the left hand is
undoubtedly empty (Photos 3 and 4).
Explanation: At the position shown in Photo 2, just
as the right forefinger and thumb have inserted the
cigarette into the left hand, the second finger of the
right hand is moved alongside the right forefinger.
The second finger-tip is slightly in advance of the
forefinger by reason of its length. This second
finger-tip presses on the cigarette causing the
cigarette to revolve on the axis formed by the
forefinger and thumb, until the free end locates the
fleshy part of the base of the thumb. This position
forms what I term the “forefinger palm,” and is an
ideal cover for indicating the left hand (Photos 3 and
4). The left hand is now flourished as though it
contained the cigarette, squeezed and disclosed
empty.
Notes: Thoroughly master this sleight. It can be
repeated in your series and is a clean-cut deception.
The actual sleight does not take a second. The rest of
the moves are made casually. Observe position of left
thumb during the sleight. It does not encircle the cigarette as the latter is inserted into left
hand, but is kept above, lying against the base of the right forefinger.
Sliding Cigarette Vanish.
Effect: Holding a cigarette at the right finger-tips,
the performer pushes it into the closed left hand
(Photo 1). For conviction, he withdraws the cigarette
and repeats the move, this time pushing the cigarette
home with the right forefinger only (Photo 2). And yet
the right hand squeezes the cigarette away, and is
demonstrated empty (Photo 3).
7
Expert Cigarette Magic
Explanation: The sleight occurs the second time the
cigarette is inserted. Actually, the cigarette is pushed
just within the fist, and comes into contact with the
curled forefinger of the left hand, which prevents it
going farther. The forefinger of the right hand slides
up the cigarette, giving the illusion of it being pushed
into the fist. The tip of the forefinger enters the fist,
and the cigarette is finger-palmed by a slight
contraction of the finger; the finger is removed and
the vanish effected (Photo 3). To emphasize the
empty condition of the left hand, the right forefinger,
concealing the cigarette, is laid against the open palm
of the left hand (Photo 4). This allows the fingers of
the right hand to be spread out, and both hands are
shown with fingers wide apart. The cigarette is safely
held pressed against the left hand in the position
shown, and yet remains concealed from the
audience’s view. This position is retained for a
moment or two, and the right forefinger then
contracts slightly to retain the cigarette, and the right
hand then moves away.
Notes: This is a mysterious vanish. The optical
illusion of the cigarette entering the left hand is
perfect. The final move convincing.
My “Rising Cigarette” Vanish.
Effect: A cigarette is placed in the left hand (Photos
1 to 3). The right hand passes over the left hand,
which is held closed, back outwards (Photo 4). The
cigarette is seen to rise unaided from the left hand
(Photo 5). The same motions are gone through, but
this time the cigarette fails to rise. On opening the left
hand, the cigarette has vanished (Photo 7).
Explanation: Two pretty moves are herein
blended. One a flourish causing the cigarette to rise
mysteriously, and the second a vanish, on repetition,
without a false move. Photos 1 and 2 clearly illustrate
how the cigarette is laid on the left hand. The right
hand is passed below (Photo 2), and folds the left
fingers over the cigarette (Photo 3). The left hand
now turns over so that the backs of both hands face
the audience (Photo 4). It is whilst passing the right
8
D. Deveen
hand downwards over the left hand that the rising
sleight is accomplished. It is effected by pushing up
the lower end of the cigarette with the left thumb.
With very little practice you should be able to send it
to the top of the left hand (Photo 5). The cigarette is
now removed (Photo 6), and the effect seemingly
repeated. At the folding-over stage (Photo 3), the
following sleight is performed. The right middle
finger rests on the top of the cigarette as depicted
(Photo 2), while the lower end of the cigarette engages the right palm. A slight pressure of
the right finger-tip retains the cigarette in the right hand after folding over the fingers of
the left. This is a baffling spectacle to the onlookers, for there seems no time or place in
which to remove the cigarette. The motions are continued as before but no cigarette rises.
Ultimately, the left hand is shown empty.
Notes: The fold-over vanish is quite effectively performed without the rising flourish. I
usually run the two together, hence their introduction here.
“Vertical” Cigarette Vanish.
Effect: A cigarette is balanced vertically on the left
hand by supporting the top end with the right middle
finger (Photo 1). The left hand closes around the
cigarette (Photo 2). The right hand is then lifted clear
(Photo 3). The left hand is blown upon; opened; the
cigarette has vanished (Photo 4). A very clean-cut
mystery.
Explanation: Holding the cigarette at one end with the right thumb and middle finger
place the free end of the cigarette against the small hard mound of flesh just below the base
9
Expert Cigarette Magic
of the left middle finger; set the cigarette vertical, lifting
the right thumb clear (Photo 1.). The left fingers now
curl up to grasp the cigarette. When it is hidden (Photo
2), the right middle finger presses against the cigarette
levering it up to a horizontal finger-palm position in the
right hand—the end of the cigarette which previously
rested on the left palm now being gripped against the
right palm. The right hand contracts slightly to palm the
cigarette and now moves away (Photo 3). Blowing upon
the left finger-tips affords a pretty flourish to suggest that the cigarette is blown away. The
left hand is demonstrated empty.
Notes: In a short time the actual sleight becomes instantaneous. As the left fingers
surround the cigarette, a mere flick of the right forefinger drives the cigarette with some
force instantly into the right palm. I cannot advocate too strongly the very slow moves in
this effect from start to finish, with the exception of the actual sleight, which is performed
as rapidly as possible.
“Favourite” Vanish.
Effect: A cigarette is held lengthways in the right
hand, as shown in Photo 1, the thumb resting on one
end of the cigarette, the other secured by the tips of the
second and third fingers. The left hand very
deliberately removes the cigarette (Photos 2 and 3).
Imagine the astonishment of spectators when the left
hand turns slowly over and proves itself empty (Photo
4). The cigarette has gone.
Explanation: The actual sleight is what I term the
“second and third finger-palm.” It occurs at the position
shown in Photo 2. The two fingers holding the cigarette
at its lowest end, viz., the second and third, bend
sharply inward; see Photo 3. This flicks the free end of
the cigarette to the palm. The speed with which the
cigarette is moved and the excellent cover afforded by
10
D. Deveen
the right hand invariably produce a mild sensation when the left hand is disclosed empty.
Notes: This, though an absurdly simple sleight, is one of the most baffling. The apparent
removal of the cigarette by the left hand leaves the right hand in the best possible position
to aid in passing the cigarette mysteriously through anywhere. Such as through one’s
head, arm, knee, into one’s pocket, etc. Cover the cigarette slowly, remove the apparent
cigarette slowly. Perform the sleight instantaneously, or as rapidly as you can.
“Descention” Vanish.
Effect: A startling surprise. A cigarette held
vertically by the finger-tips of the left hand (Photo 1)
is clearly pressed down into the left hand with one
finger of the right hand. No sooner is the cigarette
pushed home (Photos 2 and 3) than the hand opens;
only to disclose itself quite empty back and front.
Explanation: The sleight occurs at the last moment
of the downward push with the right middle finger.
(It is optional whether the first or middle finger is
used: I suggest whichever comes easiest to you.) At
this position (Photo 2) the finger of the right hand
presses against the cigarette which is also resting
against the tips of the thumb, first finger and middle
finger of the left hand. This levers the cigarette up by
an arc of 95 degrees or so (Photo 5) to the finger palm
position in the right hand. The right hand only,
moves away. The left hand opens quickly disclosing
nothing. The cigarette has vanished (Photo 4).
Notes: This is one of my most effective cigarette
moves: I include it in every programme of a cigarette
series. It is a quick, snappy, convincing
disappearance. Perfect it to fast working. The photos
demonstrate the moves beautifully. I count i—2—3 to
myself, and those split seconds complete the effect.
11
Expert Cigarette Magic
(1) Press down the cigarette; (2) lever the cigarette up against the fulcrum of the left
finger-tips and thumb; (3) snap open the left hand.
“D.D.” “Thumb-Slide” Vanish.
Effect: The left hand is held stationary in a closed
position, back of hand facing audience (Photo 1).
Holding a cigarette between the thumb and second
finger of the right hand, the performer casually inserts it
into the left hand (Photo 2). To emphasize what
happens, the right hand withdraws the cigarette (Photo
3), and again deliberately slides into the left hand (Photo
4). The right hand moves aside. The left hand now opens
and is disclosed empty back and front (Photo 5). The
cigarette has gone.
Explanation: The first insertion and withdrawal
within the left hand is genuine (Photos 1 to 3). The
second insertion is false. The sleight consists of
intercepting the path of the cigarette as it enters the left
hand. This is done with the tip of the left forefinger. The
right hand maintains the same position as before, but
allows the thumb and second finger to slide over the
stationary cigarette until the thumb just covers the tip of
the cigarette just inside the left hand. The other end of
the cigarette should now be resting against the fleshy
part of the base of the thumb (Photo 4). The thumb
affords a complete mask for the cigarette. In this
position the cigarette is removed with the right hand (Photo 5). In due time the left hand
now effects the magical
disappearance of the
cigarette.
Notes: Keep the back
of the thumb facing the
audience, as in the
photos. The right hand
12
D. Deveen
may drop inwards to the side of the body and the cigarette may be easily transferred to the
thumb and second finger palm if desired.
Supplementary “Thumb-Slide” Vanish.
Effect: A pretty flourish of the left hand precedes the
vanish of the cigarette. The cigarette is held in the right
hand, resting the top edge against the edge of the left
hand as depicted in Photo 1. The open left hand now
folds over the cigarette, as in Photo 2. The left hand now
resumes original position (Photo 1), and then once more
closes over the cigarette, which is gripped and removed
(Photo 3). As though to allay any suspicion, the second
finger and thumb withdraw the cigarette, re-insert it,
and even then the left hand effects the vanish of the
cigarette.
Explanation: This is the preceding vanish, with the
flourish above described. You will be surprised how the
moving left hand psychologically improves the effect.
Notes: Again I emphasize the value of a slight flourish
to draw the eyes of the audience prior to a sleight. Truly
there is more in this than meets the eye.
My “Slow-Motion” Vanish.
Effect: An intriguing disappearance of a cigarette
performed in a deliberate, slow-motion-like manner.
The cigarette is held conspicuously in the right hand
(Photo 1). The left hand slowly and obviously takes the
cigarette (Photo 2) removing it as in Photo 3. A slight
pause. The left hand slowly opens, and the cigarette has
gone (Photo 4).
Explanation: The cigarette is clipped at one extremity
between the second and third finger-tips of the right
hand. The other end of the cigarette rests against the
right thumb (Photo 1). The left hand now seizes the
cigarette as in Photo 2, the fingers above and the thumb
below. The left hand doses and maintains this position
whilst the right hand moves away. On moving, whilst
the cigarette is still covered by the left hand, the right
thumb moves away from the end of cigarette, while the
13
Expert Cigarette Magic
second and third fingers bend in slightly—bringing the free end of the cigarette against
the right palm.
At this stage, notice how the right forefinger indicating the left hand unconsciously
directs attention away from the right hand-wherein the cigarette is palmed-to the left
hand, from which it will eventually disappear.
Notes: Spend a little time on this sleight. It is most deceiving and comes into play in
other moves, as will be duly noted.
“Stationary” Vanish.
Effect: The cigarette lays along the right hand, one
end resting on the second finger-tip, the other on the
palm (Photo 1). The left hand picks up the cigarette in a
very natural manner (Photo 2) and throws it into space.
The cigarette disappears.
Explanation: At the moment of touching the cigarette
as though about to lift it, the right hand turns inward so
that the palm with the cigarette, still held as before,
faces the body (Photos 2 and 3). The other hand
apparently containing the cigarette makes a throwing
motion and is disclosed empty (Photo 4).
Notes: This is a puzzling spectacle, the moves being
so natural. There is no sleight: a little care in covering
the cigarette prior to apparently lifting it with the left
hand should be taken. It may be of interest to mention
that
Mr.
David
Devant initiated me
into this “palm,”
though he confined
it to apples, balls
and suchlike objects.
14
D. Deveen
“Deliberate” Vanish.
Effect: Cigarette is held in the right hand between the
tips of the thumb and 2nd finger. It is rested lightly
against the open palm of the left hand (Photo 1). The left
hand is slowly closed around the cigarette, and is
turned back outwards, the right hand being removed in
such a manner that it is apparent there is nothing
concealed therein (Photo 2). The right hand is now
slowly passed over the left hand, once or twice (Photos 3
and 4). The left hand is now slowly turned over and
opened, palm to audience, and the cigarette has
vanished.
Explanation: The moves are genuine up to the point
where the right hand commences to pass over the left
(Photo 3). The right hand passes over in an upward
direction, and as soon as its finger-tips are immediately
above the left fist, the left thumb presses on the bottom
end of the cigarette causing it to rise slightly from the
fist—covered by right hand. The right hand middle
fingers at once clip the cigarette between them (Photo 5,
reverse view), and withdraw it. The right hand,
continuing its passage, moves away with the cigarette
finger-palmed (Photo 6, reverse view). It is lowered to
position shown in Photo 4, the left hand turned to the
audience and shown to be empty.
Notes: This vanish must be performed very slowly and deliberately. The right hand
should be passed over the left at least once before it is passed over to accomplish the
sleight. As will be seen from a study of the photos, the right hand is actually moved over
the left with a circular motion.
“Snap” Vanish.
Effect: A cigarette, held outstretched at the right finger-tips (Photo 1, performer’s view),
is thrown into the air and appears to vanish miraculously.
15
Expert Cigarette Magic
Explanation: This move is similar to that used for the
“Perfection” Vanish already dealt with. The cigarette is
held as in Photo 1 by the right thumb, forefinger and
second finger. As the hand makes the upward throw the
second finger-tip is extended beyond the forefinger, and
presses on the cigarette causing it to revolve back into the
right hand until it touches the base of the forefinger.
A slight pressure from the forefinger-tip will then grip
the cigarette safely and the thumb and second finger can
now be released (Photo 2). This will be of use in your
series as a variation from the usual vanish. It is also
serviceable when a quantity is being vanished separately,
making a change from the back-palm and other sleights.
Notes: Observe the
easy, natural hold of the
cigarette (Photo 2). I term
this, the “Snap Vanish,”
because of the rapid
snap-like movement that
revolves the cigarette in
an instant from Photo 1
to Photo 2.
To create a production, the effect can be reversed, as in Photos 3 and 4. The end of the
finger-palmed cigarette is held between thumb and second finger—pressure on tip with
the forefinger levers the cigarette into view instantaneously.
“Instantaneous” Vanish.
Effect: A cigarette is placed in the left hand (Photo 1):
the fingers close over it (Photo 2). The tip of the
cigarette is clearly visible (Photo 3). The right hand taps
this end of the cigarette within the left hand (Photo 4).
The left fingers slowly open one at a time; the cigarette
has disappeared. There seems no explanation for this
problem. One would swear that the cigarette must have
been in the left hand.
Explanation: The insertion of the cigarette as shown
in the Photos 1 to 3 is genuine. The sleight that
accomplishes the deception is made instantaneously at
the moment of tapping the exposed end up out of sight
(Photo 4). Observe the photo. Actually the second and
16
D. Deveen
third fingers pass on both sides of the cigarette, grip it and on moving away again,
withdraw the cigarette with it, taking it to the second and third finger palm position,
described previously.
Notes: After gripping the cigarette the half-turn of the hand apparently to indicate the
cigarette in the left hand (Photo 5) affords ample cover to mask the palming movement.
This effect requires practice; it is worth it. To the audience the vanish is miraculous.
“Definite” Vanish.
Effect: The preliminary position of the hands is
shown in Photo 2. The cigarette is about to be pushed
into the left fist. This is apparently accomplished (Photo
2). The left hand is turned, fingers to audience, the
position of the hands now being as in Photo 3. The
cigarette is squeezed to nothing (Photo 4).
Explanation: The cigarette does not actually enter the
left fist, but passes behind it. At the first position (Photo
1), the top end of the-cigarette (extreme tip) lies between
the left thumb and the nail-side of the forefinger. The
cigarette is now pressed upwards by the right
thumb—the base of the cigarette resting on top of this,
and the fingers being free to pass behind the left hand
(Photo 2). When the cigarette is apparently well within
the left fist, it is in reality outside it, and the middle
fingers of the right hand clip the tip of the cigarette and quickly transfer it to the
fingerpalm. See Photo 5, which gives an exposed view of the operation. The left fist is
turned fingers to audience (Photo 3), and the cigarette vanished (Photo 4).
17
Expert Cigarette Magic
Notes: If preferred, the cigarette may be brought directly into the thumb-palm, after its
secret removal.
“Subtle” Vanish.
Effect: Cigarette is placed so that it is supported by the forefinger of the right hand, its
upper end just entering the left fist (Photo 1). The right forefinger slowly presses the
cigarette into the left hand (Photo 2). The right hand is held just below the left (Photo 3).
The left fist now bends downwards and is momentarily covered in part by the right hand
(Photo 4). The right hand is immediately lowered below the left, which hand rapidly
squeezes the cigarette into space and is shown empty (Photo 5 ).
Explanation: Photos 6
and 7 show the reverse
view. At first the upper
end of the cigarette
actually rests between the
thumb and nail-side of
the forefinger of the left
hand, so that when it is in
appearance pushed into
the fist it is actually in
position shown by Photo
6. When the left fist bends
downwards (Photo 4) the
cigarette comes against
the fingers of the right
hand which contract
slightly to grip the
cigarette and remove it
(Photo 7). The cigarette is
duly vanished.
Notes: The movements
should be practised so
that they blend into one
continuous whole, when
the effect is extremely
deceptive.
18
D. Deveen
Acquitments
“D.D.” Thumb-Palm Front Acquitment.
Effect I: Facing the audience, the performer casually
shows both hands empty, fingers wide apart (Photos 1
to 3). Despite this, a cigarette appears to be moulded out
of the atmosphere by rubbing the hands together.
Effect II: A cigarette is vanished and the performer
completes the mystery by proving his hands empty.
Explanation: The cigarette is cunningly concealed
from view of the audience by the following sleight.
Commencing with the cigarette thumb-palmed in the
right hand, the right hand passes lightly over the left
hand. This casual movement emphasizes that the left
hand is empty (Photo 1), and the slightly open fingers of
the right hand suggest that no cigarette is reasonably
there.
Actually, at the position shown in Photo 1 the
cigarette is being transferred from the right thumb-palm
to the left thumb-palm. See Exposure Photo 4. This
clearly depicts the erstwhile free end of the cigarette
being gripped by the left thumb-fork. The exchange is
made whilst the two hands move from the left to the
right side of body. As they move they also reverse
positions. The right hand commences above the left as in
Photo 1; as they move to the left, the right hand, very
naturally, turns over to show itself empty; the left hand,
following likewise, turns the palm away from audience
so as to conceal the cigarette it has just received in its left
thumb-fork. The movement is complete. For further
experience the cycle of movement may be reversed.
Notes: A splendid acquitment: once known, it is fool-proof. The repetition of the moves
to bring the cigarette back again may be useful, if, say, the left hand is a trifle weak in
production effects.
19
Expert Cigarette Magic
My “Finger-Clip” Acquitment.
Effect: To convince the spectators that his hands are definitely empty, the performer
indicates the empty left hand. Following this, the right hand is shown on both sides, The
left hand is again demonstrated void; yet a cigarette may be taken from space at any time.
Explanation: As a preliminary, study Photos 1 and 2. The cigarette first reposes in the
usual thumb-palm position—supposing the acquitment immediately follows a vanish. To
get the cigarette into correct position for the acquitment, the middle fingers bend inwards
and clip the free end between them, sliding about half-an-inch down on either side of
cigarette (Photo 1). The cigarette is released from the thumb-palm, and if the fingers are
extended the position of the cigarette will be as in Photo 2. This move requires some
practice to acquire neatly. The middle fingers must be bent right down against the hand to
perform correctly.
20
D. Deveen
In Photo 3 the left hand is being shown empty, and during this time the right hand is
obtaining the cigarette in the position mentioned above, between second and third
fingers. The forefinger of the right hand indicates the empty left. To emphasize this, the
right forefinger is rested against the palm of the left. The right hand is now turned around
disclosing the palm (Photo 4). As this happens, the fingers of this hand are straightened
behind the left hand, the middle fingers holding the cigarette vertically (Exposure Photo
5). The right hand is now turned back outwards (audience’s view shown in Photo 6, and
Exposure Photo 7 showing reverse view). Now the fingers of the right hand merely bend
down, again safely concealing the cigarette in this hand (Exposure Photo 8). The left hand
is turned to show the back, the right hand, with forefinger extended is casually passed
over the left-and the palm of the left hand again turned to the audience, bringing us back
to the preliminary position shown in Photo 3.
Notes: When the “Finger-clip” position is acquired, this is quite a smooth and easy
acquitment. Practice so as to gain complete cover for the cigarette.
My Front Acquitment.
Effect: With this move both hands are shown empty in
casual manner; yet the cigarette is always under control
and ready for production.
Explanation: In Photo 1 the left hand is being shown.
The cigarette has previously been thumb-palmed in the
right hand, but at the stage shown in the photo, has been
brought into the position used for the “Fingerclip”
Acquitment mentioned previously (i.e., the cigarette is
held at one end between the second and third fingers).
The performer now turns to the right, and the right hand
is shown empty (Photo 2). During this turn, the hands
are momentarily brought together (Photo 3), the fingers
of the right hand are straightened behind the left, as
shown, causing the free end of the cigarette to be
brought against the upper part of the palm of the left
hand. See Exposure Photo 4 (the hands, of course, are
never seen in this position by the audience.) The position
of the cigarette is such that by slightly bending the
second finger of the left hand down on to tip of cigarette,
it can be retained in the left hand in the finger-palm
position. The hands then come apart, and the turn is
completed as shown in Photo 2. The right hand is shown
on both sides.
Notes: This is a rapid acquitment, and quite simple, if
the “finger-clip” principle has been mastered.
21
Expert Cigarette Magic
A reversal of the moves again brings the cigarette back into the opposite hand, if
desired.
Right Side Acquitment.
Effect: Facing right, the performer demonstrates
both his hands empty by holding them with both their
palms facing the audience (Photo 1). The hands are
then simultaneously reversed, and the backs exhibited
(Photo 3). Again the hands turn, depicting the palms
empty. And even now the right hand catches a
cigarette from space.
Explanation: Briefly, the effect is accomplished by a
combined back-and-front palm with both hands.
The cigarette is first back-palmed as in Exposure
Photo 4 (see also Reverse Palm methods). It is thus
hidden when the two palms are exhibited (Photo 1).
The two hands now turn round. Actually, the hands
both turn towards one another, their palms together
(Photo 2). The right hand fingers bend inwards,
bringing the cigarette adjacent to the left hand
forefinger. This forefinger tip bends slightly and grips
the cigarette in the “finger-palm” position (Photo 5).
This sleight occurs almost instantly while the two
hands turn round.
The cigarette can now either be produced with the
left hand, or the movement exactly reversed, leaving
the cigarette back-palmed in the right hand, as
originally.
Notes: Study this. In my opinion, a good acquitment
is equal to three good magical disappearances. Vanish
a cigarette from your hands; the wise spectator is
surprised. He then subconsciously endeavours to
solve the mystery. The empty hand eliminated, he
wonders about the other hand. If both hands are
demonstrated empty, his mind usually refuses to cope
with the problem. He is mystified. Your object is
complete.

Left Side Acquitment.
Effect I: Facing left, the performer indicates his empty
left hand (Photo 1). Passing his right hand over the left
(Photo 2), the back of the left hand is shown (Photo 3).
Both sides of the right hand are proved empty. Yet, at
will, the performer may produce a cigarette at his
finger-tips.
Effect II: Assuming that a cigarette has been vanished
by a sleight, both hands may be shown empty.
Explanation: This sleight makes use of both finger and
thumb palm. It is quite easy of operation, and the moves
should present no difficulty.
This is another original favourite of mine, performed
as follows. At the commencement (Photo 1), the
cigarette is finger-palmed in the right hand, i.e., gripped
at one end by the tip of the first finger, and at the other
by the fleshy part at the base of the finger (see Exposure
Photo 5). As the right hand passes over the palm of the
left in an anti-clockwise direction, the end of the
cigarette in contact with the first finger-tip is brought against the fork of the left thumb
(Photo 2); here it is thumb-palmed by the left hand, which turns over (Photo 3). See also
Exposure Photo 6 for reverse view. The right hand, held below the left, now turns to
disclose the empty palm (Photo 4). This position is held for a moment; and then the middle
fingers of the right hand are slightly moved up behind the left hand, securing the cigarette
once more. As the right hand turns to show the back again, the cigarette is thumb-palmed,
leaving the left hand free to be shown again.
Notes: Most moves with a right-handed performer are presented facing left, and this
acquitment will be found very useful to assist in breaking up the monotony of consecutive
vanishes.

Productions
“D.D.” PRODUCTION OF FOUR
CIGARETTES FROM EMPTY
HANDS.
Effect: In this surprising mystery, the performer’s
left hand is demonstrated empty; it is turned back
outwards to the audience, and a cigarette
immediately materializes, rising in a mysterious
manner from inside the hand. The right hand takes
the cigarette and places it between two of the fingers
of the left hand, which is again held back outwards. A
second cigarette likewise emerges,
rising gracefully from the hand. This cigarette is
also taken and placed between the fingers of the left
hand. In the same manner a third and a fourth
cigarette make their appearance; and yet the inside or
the left hand is constantly shown empty.
Explanation: A special magazine to take four
cigarettes is required. This is merely a block of wood,
having four grooves at the top in which the cigarettes
can be laid. The fake is shown in Photo 1 in the
necessary position upon the performer’s table,
concealed behind a silk or some other object. In Photo
2 it is seen loaded with four cigarettes-these should be
of the wooden variety, as much difficulty will be
experienced with genuine cigarettes; at any rate, to
commence with.
The four cigarettes are secured indetectably in the
right hand—such as under cover of placing a
match-box on the table as shown in Photo 3. The right
hand removes the cigarettes from the fake as seen in
Photos 4 and 5; they are easily gripped in this manner.
The performer, facing left, shows his empty left
hand (Photo 6); the right hand is passed casually over
the left as in Photo 7. At this moment the cigarette
held by the first finger of the right hand is invisibly
transferred to the left. This is done as follows. As the
right hand passes over, the thumb of the left hand
24
D. Deveen
comes between the cigarette and the forefinger—the
cigarette is clipped against the left hand by the thumb,
and the hand at once turns back outwards (Photo 8). The
cigarette is caused to rise (Photo 9). It is removed by the
forefinger and thumb of the right hand, and the left hand
is shown empty and then turned back to the previous
position.
The right hand places the visible cigarette between the
third and fourth fingers of the left hand, held by the
middle joints, so that it protrudes. At (his time, the left
hand steals the cigarette held by the second finger of the
right hand, as follows. As the right hand places the
visible cigarette between the third and fourth fingers of
the left, the hands are naturally brought close
together—the thumb of the right hand actually touching
the fingers
of the left. In this position it will be found an easy
matter for the forefinger and thumb of the left hand to be
extended under cover of the right hand, and grasp the
extreme tip of the cigarette to be stolen—the tip nearest
the palm of the right hand. Held thus, the cigarette is
easily got into the left hand, as the right hand places the
visible cigarette in the position stated.
The above move is not difficult. Go over its essentials
once again. Note that the stolen cigarette is gripped by
the left hand thumb and forefinger before the right hand
attempts to place its visible cigarette between the fingers
of the left hand—actually, with practice, the movements
can be blended nicely.
The left hand now levers up the second cigarette into
view (Photo 10). For the third and fourth cigarette, the
same moves are utilized. The right hand takes the
cigarette just produced, between forefinger and thumb.
The palm of the left hand is turned to the audience and
shown. The hand is turned back again (the first cigarette
produced is remaining, of course, between third and
fourth fingers). The right hand goes to place the second visible cigarette between the
second and third fingers of the left hand, and at this time the left hand steals another
cigarette from the right. This cigarette is produced as before—to be followed by the fourth
cigarette, in due course. The final position is shown in Photo 11.
25
Expert Cigarette Magic
Notes: This is a really beautiful effect. Requires some work spent upon it to perfect, but
the resulting deception will be well-finished and smooth in performance.
CONTINUOUS CIGARETTE PRODUCTION.
Effect: The performer demonstrates an opera-hat to be
quite empty and rests it on the table. He then proceeds to
materialize a cigarette from the air, with his right hand.
This is clearly seen to be placed in his left hand. The left
hand places it in the hat. The right hand then proceeds to
catch a second cigarette, and this is placed in the left
hand as before, which again places it in the hat. The
amazing thing is that each cigarette is caught in the right
hand, definitely placed in the left hand, and still the
right hand can produce another.
Explanation: Only two cigarettes are used. One is
thumb-palmed in the left hand. The other cigarette is
secured in the right hand, held by the tip of the
forefinger and the fleshy part at the base of this finger (in
readiness for the finger-palm production). The right
hand makes a catch in the air and produces this cigarette
(Photo i). The cigarette is deliberately transferred to the
left hand (Photo 2), where it is held by the thumb and
forefinger, as shown. This move brings the fingers and
thumb of the right hand adjacent to the thumb-palmed
cigarette in the left hand. Immediately the thumb and
forefinger of the right hand grasp the thumb-palmed
cigarette as near to the fork of the thumb as possible, and
transfer it to the finger-palm. The right hand moves
away with the cigarette thus concealed, whilst the left
hand lowers the visible cigarette into the hat (Photo 3).
This cigarette is again thumb-palmed in the left hand,
whilst the right hand produces the cigarette it holds. The
production continues on these lines.
An exposed view, showing how the secret transfer of
the cigarette takes place, is given in Photo 4.
Notes: Practice the moves slowly at first, and the desired speed and synchronism will
follow. The effect of an endless stream of cigarettes becoming materialized is an intriguing
spectacle. A fake in the hat can be used to show a quantity inside if desired.

THE MYSTERY CABINET.
Effect: A neat, plain box is disclosed empty (Photo 1). As many as twenty cigarettes can
be dropped into the box and made to vanish. Similarly, from the empty box a large
number of cigarettes may be produced.
Explanation: First I may mention that dozens of
magically-minded folk, after witnessing this effect,
have sought information respecting it. This is the first
time I have exposed the solution.
The effect is based on the Black Art principle, the
interior of the box being lined with black velvet. Near
the bottom of the box a spring~ hinged flap forms a
double-bottom. For Photo 1 the edge of the flap was
whitened for descriptive purposes—it can just be seen.
The flap is easy-fitting, hinged to the side which
carries the lid-hinges, and extends from this side to
within an inch of the opposite side. There is thus a
resulting space of one inch, plus the length of the box,
through which cigarettes can be dropped to the
genuine bottom. On the box being tilted forward
slightly, the cigarettes slide out of view under the flap,
Thus hidden, the box appears empty at four feet range.
Cigarettes can always be immediately produced by a
touch on a catch outside the box, which releases the
flap. This flies up against the side and lid of box. In my
own act I use the box in the apparent gathering of
quantities of cigarettes, some being placed in the box
(Photo 2). The quantity actually produced is considerably enlarged with the addition of
the cigarettes already contained in the box, handfuls of which are taken out and shown
(Photo 3).
Notes: The lid is designed to remain ope, upright. This masks any sleights that may be
effected for apparently placing cigarettes inside, etc. The outside of my cabinet is coloured
red to heighten the Black Art effect.

Expert Cigarette Magic
WITH LIGHTED CIGARETTES
PRELIMINARY REMARKS
What has already been said relative to unlighted cigarettes, will in a large measure
apply equally to the manipulation of cigarettes alight.
But there are some other points which should be borne in mind. In dealing with lighted
objects care must be taken that no damage be caused by the object itself. And in dealing
with such things as lighted cigarettes’ the performer has always to avoid the visible
presence of smoke, when such presence would lead to the detection of the sleight or other
device employed. The operative hand should, wherever possible, be kept slightly
in motion, this tending to disperse the thin column of smoke. A puff of smoke emitted
from the lips will also serve as effective cover.
The skilful manipulation of lighted cigarettes is intriguing to watch, and there is
nothing more effective in the hands of the finished artist.
ENVANISHMENT
“STANDARD” L.C. VANISH.
Effect: The cigarette is held between the first and
second fingers of the right hand, with the left hand
located immediately above (Photo 1). The left hand
turns over, and is contracted slightly, appearing to
remove cigarette (Photo 2). The left hand moves away
from the right (Photo 3), a squeezing motion is
imparted, and the left hand then turns palm to audience
and is seen empty (Photo 4).
Explanation: When the left hand covers the fingers of
the right (Photo 2), these fingers are bent down, which
brings one end of the cigarette against the fork of the
right thumb. Photos 5 and 6 show reverse view. The
cigarette is gripped in the thumb-palm, and the fingers
are immediately straightened; the hands come apart,
and the cigarette is duly vanished as shown.
30
D. Deveen
Notes: Mastery of the thumb-palm is essential in all good cigarette work, and the
following will deal with some further aspects.
“ELEMENTARY” L.C. MANIPULATION.
Effect: The performer removes a lighted cigarette from his lips, places it in his left hand
very delicately; blows a puff of smoke at it. The cigarette vanishes with the smoke.
Reaching into his trouser pocket, the performer produces the cigarette still burning. He
throws it into another puff of smoke. The cigarette again vanishes. This time it is retrieved
from an inside pocket. So it plays Will o’ the Wisp. Passing down his sleeve, through his
elbow, out of his collar-ad lib.
Explanation: Such and more are the fascinating
magical moves that can be produced with the
Elementary Vanish. To call the thumb-palm an original
vanish would be a paradox. But I want to give you
several essential facts that may change your outlook on
this simple sleight. Perform the thumbpalm with a
lighted cigarette, holding it between the first and
second fingers (Photo 1); you smoothly pass it to the
position in Photo 2. Good. If you are a novice I should
like to film your efforts and screen the results.
(Incidentally, that is how every effort in this book was
criticized before publication.) You would be amazed
how much of the cigarette is visible when it shouldn’t
be. Have you ever thought of this ? Thumb-palmed, the
length of a cigarette is the same as the diameter of a
large orange. You would be very careful in palming
such an object. You should be just as particular with the
cigarette.
Now for the remedy. Do not let the cigarette protrude from the palm of the hand; keep
it close to the palm. To assist this, make a practice of bringing the second finger over the
cigarette and pressing it within reasonable distance of the surface of the palm.
31
Expert Cigarette Magic
Watch the angle of the cigarette all the time until the correct position becomes second
nature.
“ULTRA” L.C. VANISH.
Effect: Cigarette is held as in Photo1, between the
right thumb and forefinger, at the unlighted end. The
cigarette is slowly placed under raised left hand
(Photo 2), which closes over it. The right hand is
removed (Photo 3), and the left hand crumbles , the
lighted cigarette to smoke (Photo 4).
Explanation: The sleight occurs whilst the cigarette
is hidden by the left hand (Photo 2). At this moment
the second and third fingers rise from their closed
position and clip the cigarette between them, about the
middle of its length (the second finger above, and
third finger below, the cigarette). The second and third
fingers then bend quickly to their former closed
position. The right hand is lowered with the right
forefinger indicating the left hand (Photo 3). The
position of the cigarette forms my closed second and
third finger-palm; as will be seen by Photo 4, it is a
convincing concealment. The left hand is then
disclosed empty.
Notes: The above sleight brings the cigarette right
into the thumb-palm position. You are advised to
follow up with the thumbpalm, for then the right hand
may be opened and passed over the left hand, thus
further suggesting that the cigarette must be in the left
hand.
From this “closed second and third fingerpalm” I
sometimes remove the third finger: the .second finger
then alone clips the cigarette against the palm. This
improves the angle of vision, but brings the lighted
end perilously close to the hand. Perhaps the shape of
your palm will determine whether it is practical for
you or not.
32
D. Deveen
“SIMPLICITY” L.C. VANISH.
Effect: A cigarette is removed from the lips by the first
and second fingers of the right hand (Photo 1). The left
hand slowly removes the cigarette from the right (Photos 2
and 3). A slight pause.... and the left hand crumples the
cigarette into thin air. An excellent deception.
Explanation: The apparent removal is genuine until the
cigarette is covered by the left hand (Photo 2). Here the
actual, sleight is performed. It is the earliest cigarette
sleight known, but the following original moves and
position of the hands vastly improve the usual procedure.
The two fingers with the cigarette between bend inwards
bringing one end of the cigarette to the fork of the right
thumb and forefinger, where it is gripped and retained.
This thumb-palm is accomplished under cover of the left
hand, the right hand assuming the position shown in
Photo 3, before the left hand, seemingly containing the
cigarette, moves away. The left hand then throws the
cigarette into space. It disappears (Photo 4).
Notes: Keep the back of the hand square to the audience,
as illustrated. Personally, I frequently bend the second
finger down and press the cigarette to the palm of the
hand. This allows a much larger angle of deception for the
right hand, very useful when dealing with lighted
cigarette productions. You may burn yourself once or
twice, but it will show how near to the hand you may
retain the cigarette !
“HORIZONTAL” L.C. VANISH.
Effect: The performer takes a burning cigarette,
placing it deliberately in the left hand. The horizontal
position of the cigarette (Photo 1) suggests no possible
scope for trickery. However, the cigarette has certainly
disappeared on opening the left hand. A most
deception illusion.
Explanation: This is a beautifully simple. vanish. No
difficult movement is required, just a little care in
holding the cigarette with the right hand. The second
and third finger-tips of the right hand clip the lighted
33
Expert Cigarette Magic
end some quarter of an inch from the burning part,
pressing the other end slightly against the thumb
(Photo i).
The sleight occurs at Photo 2, under cover of the
fingers of the left hand. Whilst in this position the
fingers holding the lighted end contract slightly,
causing the unlighted end of the cigarette that was
against the thumb to travel to the right palm, forming the “second and third finger-palm”
described earlier. It is not until the actual “palm” has been accomplished that the thumb
moves from its position. The right hand now withdraws, leaving the cigarette to all
appearances in a horizontal position in the left hand (Photo 3).
It now only remains to open the left hand at will, and demonstrate empty.
Notes: Observe your efforts in a mirror, until the
illusion of the left hand taking the cigarette is perfect.
“EXCEL” L.C. VANISH.
Effect: Smoking a cigarette, the magician places it into
the left hand (Photos 1 to 3). Blowing a puff of smoke at
the left hand, this hand opens, the cigarette seemingly
disappearing with the smoke (Photo 4). The smoke, only,
rising from the empty hand is very mystifying.
Explanation: The right hand holds the cigarette at the
tip by the forefinger and thumb (Photo 1). So, it is placed
apparently into the left hand (Photo 2). At the position
shown in Photo 2 the following sleight occurs. The second
and third finger-tips of the right hand clip the cigarette
about half-way down, bend inwards and deposit the
cigarette in the thumb-palm position. This movement is
made fairly quickly. Immediately the cigarette is
thumb-palmed, the second and third fingers release the
cigarette and resume the position shown in Photo 3. The
left hand disperses the smoke blown at it, and is seen
empty.
Notes: Study the positions of both hands. Notice how
ready the right hand is to pass into the left inside pocket
for continued lighted cigarette production, etc. Time the
period the cigarette may be concealed in the right hand,
ere the smoke is sufficient to disclose the cigarette’s
presence.
34
D. Deveen
“PERFECTION” L.C. VANISH.
Effect: This is truly magical. A lighted cigarette is
placed into the left hand (Photos 1 and 2). The right
hand is removed obviously empty (Photo 3). The left
hand is now exposed—also empty (Photo 4).
Explanation: This amazing performance is not easy. It
is difficult. But once mastered it affords you a sleight to
be proud of, and one that will repay every moment
expended on it.
This is how it is done. The cigarette is back palmed. It
is held at the unlighted end by the second finger and
thumb (Photo 1). So, it is placed into the left hand from
behind (Photo 2). At this point the “back palm” sleight
is accomplished.
The tips of the first and third fingers are brought
against the sides of the cigarette, as close to the thumb
as possible. The thumb and second finger now release
their hold of the cigarette. The second finger passes
between the first and third fingers. This completely
revolves the cigarette on a pivot caused by the contact
of the first and third finger grip. As the second finger
comes to the :front of the hand and straightens, so the
cigarette comes to a position parallel and close to the
back of the second finger.
Notes: Possibly the reader will pass some trite
remarks whilst endeavouring to acquire this sleight. I
suggest that it is tried gradually. Let it alone for a day or
two and tackle it afresh. It is to be acquired by anyone
with requisite practice and patience,
The continuous back-and-front palm embraces this move and will deal with one or two
further points.
“UTILITY” L.C. VANISH.
Effect: The cigarette is held in the right hand between the forefinger and thumb (Photo
1). It appears to be placed into the left (Photo 2); and a few moments later this hand is seen
to be quite empty (Photo 3).
35
Expert Cigarette Magic
Explanation: As the left hand approaches and seemingly removes the cigarette (Photo
.2), the second and third fingers of the right hand are extended to the cigarette and seize it
about the centre. They convey it between them directly into the thumb-palm, where it is
gripped, the left hand then moving away as though containing the cigarette. The left hand
performs the “vanish.”
Notes: Any vanish from this position is worth acquiring; it enables one to produce the
cigarette apparently from an inside pocket (the moves being reversed), and allows of the
natural securing of a further lighted cigarette, fake, etc.
“SUPER” SINGLE-HANDED L.C.
VANISH.
Effect: The cigarette suddenly disappears from the
right hand. In this vanish the cigarette is removed
from the lips in a very natural position (Photo 1). Yet
an instant later it has vanished, as depicted in Photo 2.
Explanation: Although the cigarette is held
apparently haphazardly, the moves were constructed
to follow from this position (Photo 1). Held between
the first and second fingers of the right hand the third
finger takes up a position adjacent to the second
finger, behind the cigarette. The second finger now
releases its hold, leaving the cigarette between the
first and third fingers, with the second finger behind
the cigarette. Bringing the second finger between the
first and third fingers (Photo 3) levers the unlighted
end of the cigarette round so that the cigarette is
revolved to the back-palm position.
Notes: The natural hold of the cigarette makes a
tremendous improvement, there being no necessity to
use the thumb.
36
D. Deveen
“STATIONARY” L.C. VANISH.
Effect: A lighted cigarette is removed from the lips
and held in a natural position in the right hand (Photo
1). The left hand slowly approaches (Photo 2), and
removes the cigarette (Photo 3). The left hand
eventually shows itself to be quite empty (Photo 4). A
clean, definite deception.
Explanation: A variant of our old friend, the
thumb-palm, is responsible—but notice the subtle
difference from the usual procedure. The cigarette is
held by the right hand in the easy position shown
(Photo 1), and this hand does not move its position
during the sleight. The left hand approaches and covers
the cigarette (Photo 2), and at this moment the cigarette
is thumb-palmed. The left hand at once moves away
(Photo 3), and the vanish is effected.
Notes:. This is a sound vanish, and will bear
performing
immediately
after
the
Standard
Thumb-Palm Vanish—even though the actual sleight,
in both cases, is the same.
“D.D.” REVERSE PALM.
Effect: The performer holds a lighted cigarette at
arm’s length in his left hand. This suddenly vanishes,
and to the puzzlement of the spectators, the hand is
shown empty back and front. At will, the performer
may reproduce the cigarette again.
Explanation: Actually, the cigarette is back-palmed,
followed by a continuous backand-front palm.
The initial sleight is the back-palm, performed as
follows :—The cigarette is held at the unlighted end by
the second finger and thumb. The first and third
finger-tips now close around the cigarette, on the sides
of the latter (Photo 1). The thumb and second finger
release their hold, the second finger forces itself
between the first and third fingers (Photo 2) at the same
time pushing on the end of the cigarette, causing it to
revolve so that when the second finger resumes its
37
Expert Cigarette Magic
normal position it has caused the cigarette to lay parallel to it at the back of the hand
(Photo 3).
A reverse motion ultimately leaves the cigarette
thumb-palmed, so that the back of the hand may be
shown empty. For this, proceed as follows. Let the
second finger pass backward between the two fingers
holding the cigarette. The second finger passes up one
side of the cigarette so that the latter is now held
clipped between this second finger, and the third
finger—the first finger is removed. From this position it
is easy to take the cigarette into the thumb-palm.
(Photos 4 and 5). The back of the hand is now seen to be
empty.
Notes: The back and front of the hand may be shown
continuously. This sleight will only be accomplished
efficiently with sheer perseverance. The movements
should blend into a continuous whole.
ACQUITMENTS
L.C. TWIST ACQUITMENT.
Effect: Casually turning his empty hands to show
back and front, the performer produces a lighted
cigarette from space.
Explanation: The move to convince the spectators that
the hand actually holding the cigarette is empty, is
performed as follows:- The first position is obtained by
thumb-palming the cigarette in the right hand (Photo
1). The first and second fingers bend towards the
cigarette and clip it between them, by its
centre—bringing it away from the thumb-palm (Photos
2 and 3). The fingers are straightened, and the thumb
rested on the protruding tip of the cigarette (Photo 4).
The hand is apparently empty.
To show the back of the hand, the moves are
reversed. The fingers holding the cigarette bend into the thumb-palm position, where the
cigarette is again retained. This is done under cover of the turn of the hand to show the
back.
38
D. Deveen
Notes: This is not an original move of mine; it was shown to me many years ago.
Personally, ! seldom use it, unless in a long combination of effects.
However, it is a beautifully simple move. Once perfected, it can be performed
continuously without visible effort.
MY FAVOURITE L.C. ACQUITMENT.
Effect: Facing left :—Both the performer’s hands are
continually demonstrated empty. The back and front
of each hand is slowly shown. Despite this conviction,
a lighted cigarette appears at will, at the performer’s
finger-tips.
By the same method the hands are shown empty
after .a lighted cigarette has been vanished.
Explanation: By the following sleights the cigarette is
completely hidden from the sight of the audience
whilst the hands are shown empty back and front.
Assuming that the cigarette is first thumbpalmed in
the right hand, proceed as follows :The first position is
shown in Photo 1; the right hand conceals the cigarette,
whilst the palm of the ]eft is seen empty. In an
anticlockwise direction, the right hand glides over the
left palm to the position shown in Photo 2. At this
moment the middle fingers of the left hand open
slightly to receive the free end of the cigarette between
them, which they grip, about half-an-inch from the
lighted end. The left hand commences to turn so that its
back is to the audience, and in so doing the left thumb
comes under the cigarette, and the latter is smoothly
transferred to the thumbpalm.
The left fingers
straighten. The position is as Photo 3- The right hand,
continuing to move, passes below the left; and is
turned, disclosing the empty palm (Photo 4). Both
hands have been seen empty.
39
Expert Cigarette Magic
To bring the cigarette again into the right hand, the right hand is raised to the left (Photo
5), and its middle fingers clip the free end of the cigarette, and immediately following this,
the right hand turns over with its back to audience;
during which time the cigarette has again been
thumb-palmed in the right hand (Photo 6). The left
hand is turned in a closed condition, to the audience,
and the fingers slowly opened, showing the empty
palm (Photo 7).
The reader is also referred to Exposure Photos 8 to
~z, which show the actual operations from the reverse
side.
Notes: Work smoothly and deliberately, and you
will find this a most effective acquitment. It truly pays
for acquiring. After two or three vanishes an
occasional move of this nature is truly magical in
effect, even to the initiated.

PRODUCTIONS
“Simplicity” Lighted Cigarette Production.
Effect: The performer enters, and, showing his hands
to be perfectly empty, a lighted cigarette quickly
materializes at his finger-tips. This is taken in his right
hand, squeezed into space, only to be caught again in
the rising smoke. Again the elusive cigarette
disappears and reappears, passing hither and thither in
uncanny fashion. Finally, the performer removes a
handkerchief from his pocket and ensconces the
cigarette therein. But the silk is thrown into the air and
the cigarette has gone, only to be reproduced from the
waistcoat pocket. In the subsequent moves other
lighted cigarettes make their appearance, until the
performer holds four between the fingers of one hand.
Explanation: This production will serve to give the
reader an idea of how various simple effects in cigarette
deception may be blended into complete mysteries. All
the effects involved are of an easy nature, the only
requirements being a holder for two lighted cigarettes,
which is placed in the right waistcoat pocket—having
been filled with the necessary cigarettes; a small clip on
the left side of performer’s coat holding a dummy
lighted cigarette; a genuine lighted cigarette which is
concealed in the hands at the commencement.
To work, the cigarette in the hands is produced, and various sleights are indulged
in—these can be taken from the many sleights already explained. To conclude the single
cigarette manipulation, the silk vanish makes a pleasing change. Hold cigarette as shown
in Photo 1. Remove the silk from pocket and drape it over the left hand (Photo 2). Place the
unlighted end of the cigarette against the hand covered with silk. With the left hand throw
the silk over the cigarette. As the right hand is momentarily enveloped, it quickly
thumb-palms the cigarette, and is withdrawn, leaving silk held in left hand, as Photo 3. A
moment later the left hand throws the silk into the air, and the cigarette has vanished. Silk
is caught by left hand as it descends, and passed to the right hand-whilst the left hand goes
to the waistcoat pocket and takes one of the lighted cigarettes from holder. The right hand
now drops the silk on table, and takes the cigarette from the left hand, the performer
turning left and exhibiting his left hand on both sides (Photo 4). The visible cigarette is
now placed between the thumb and forefinger of the left hand. The right hand grasps in
the air and produces its palmed cigarette, which is placed between first and second fingers
of the left hand. The hand is displayed with the two cigarettes, after which the one
41

between the forefinger and thumb is taken by the fight
hand, which throws it away (thumb-palm vanish).
During this, the left hand drops to the side and secures
the dummy cigarette from clip. Left hand is raised,
performer makes a pass over it with the right
hand—left hand is held back out, and the dummy
cigarette is seen to emerge, being levered up with the
left thumb. Right hand at once takes this and places it
between fingers of left hand, following this up by
reaching out and producing its thumb-palmed
cigarette. The position is now as Photo 5. The third
cigarette is placed with the others in the left hand.
Right hand takes one of the genuine cigarettes, places it
to lips and takes a few puffs—then throws it away
(thumb-palm vanish). Covering this, the left hand
transfers the two visible cigarettes separately into the
right, where they are held between the fingers and
shown. This leaves the left hand free to produce the
remaining cigarette from the holder in pocket. The
three cigarettes are arranged between the fingers of the
left hand, and the free right hand then dives into the
ascending smoke and produces its palmed
cigarette—which is placed likewise in the left hand,
and the four cigarettes displayed (Photo 6).
L.C. Fake For Production and Vanish.
Effect: Performer demonstrates his hand empty by holding it with his fingers wide
apart. Instantly, a lighted cigarette appears. The cigarette is genuinely alight. After
permitting the curl of smoke to rise from the cigarette for
a moment or two, the cigarette is thrown into space. It
simply disappears.
Explanation: The effect is produced without
sleight-of-hand by means of a neat little fake, that,
clipped to the second finger, retains a lighted cigarette
(Photo 1). The open hand may be demonstrated empty,
but by simply bending the second finger-tip to the
thumb (Photo 2) a beautiful illusion of a lighted cigarette
arriving magically is produced. By simply opening the
hand the cigarette apparently vanishes.
Notes: The advantage of this method is that there is
little rehearsal or practice necessary. And the fingers
may be held apart. Against this, the movements of the
42

hand are limited. In my version the hand is shown back and front and the cigarette is
definitely seen to be unprepared. If you haven’t a lot of time for practice, be content with
the fake. It is quite good. If you can discard it, so much the better.
“D.D.” Lighted Cigarette Combination.
(With L. C. Fake)
Effect: The performer enters, deposits silk hat on
table. He places a small ash-tray inside hat. Removes a
cigarette case from his pocket, a cigarette is lit up and
held in the left hand. It is taken in the right hand, from
whence it vanishes. Both hands are unmistakably
empty, fingers shown wide apart. The cigarette, still
burning, is now removed from an inside pocket. It is
dropped into the hat. Reaching out with his empty left
hand, the performer literally plucks another lighted
cigarette from space. There is no denying its burning
qualities: smoke emerges steadily. This cigarette is
taken into the right hand and instantly another lighted
cigarette is taken from sheer space by the left hand. So it
goes on. First one hand produces lighted cigarettes in a
continuous stream, then the other, then two hands catch
cigarettes, dropping them into the hat until the hat must
be deemed nearly full.
A handful of cigarettes is removed from the hat just
for conviction. Cigarettes are now taken from the hat
and as easily made to vanish, disappearing into thin air.
First from one hand, now from the other. Now from
both hands simultaneously. Eventually the hat is
disclosed empty, as before. An ideal fantasy. Complete
in mystery and finish.
Explanation: The effect is produced by a combination
of sleight-of-hand and mechanical aid. Undoubtedly
one of the highest forms of illusion.
The fake is the usual pin-fake, the use and operation
of which are described elsewhere in this book. On the
prong a lighted cigarette is impaled. The fake and
cigarette are placed in a lighted-cigarette container in
the right waistcoat pocket. A case containing a few
cigarettes is bestowed in another pocket.
43
Expert Cigarette Magic
The hat utilized has a double bottom, underneath which are a number of dummy
lighted cigarettes—these must be really good imitations. The double bottom in the hat is
of the usual type, opening up to allow access to the interior.
To work, the hat is casually demonstrated empty; it is placed on the table. The case is
taken from the performer’s pocket, a cigarette removed and lit. The two or three sleights
causing the effects with this lighted cigarette will be the favourite ones from the numerous
effects already detailed.
The cigarette is finally vanished, remaining thumb-palmed in the right hand, whilst the
left goes to the vest pocket and takes the second lighted cigarette from the container. This
is the one with the finger-clip attached.
Having secured the fake, one is ready for the apparently endless production. The fake
will naturally be secured with the clip nearest the fingers, with the lighted end projecting
in this condition it has just been removed from the pocket. The clip is readily adjusted on
the second finger of the left hand and the performer turns to the left, and the cigarette is
displayed similarly to Photo 1. The right hand at once comes up to the left (Photo 2), and
appears to remove the cigarette (Photo 3). Now see Exposure Photos 4 and 5, showing
reverse view. As the right hand reaches the left the cigarette it holds thumb-palmed is
gripped between the middle fingers of the fight hand (Photo 4), which bring the cigarette
into view; the position immediately following being shown in Photo 5. The fingers of the
left hand have straightened, allowing the cigarette first visible to be concealed behind the
second finger of that hand. The right hand appears to place the visible cigarette into the
hat; actually, the cigarette is again thumb-palmed in the right hand. Meanwhile, the left
hand has grasped into space and brought its cigarette quickly into view again. This is
apparently taken by the right hand and placed in the hat—so the production continues.
Variety is afforded by producing cigarettes one at a time with the left and right hands
alternatively, and both together. The left hand making use of the fake method; the right
hand relying on sleight-of-hand.
When a sufficient number has been seemingly produced, a handful from the
compartment in the hat is removed, and allowed to fall back again, and under the flap.
The reversal of the production moves is now effected to apparently dispose of the
cigarettes. Taking them one at a time from the hat, they are seen to disappear visibly from
the left hand. This, of course, being accomplished by the straightening of the hand, so
sending the fake cigarette instantly out of view behind the left middle finger. Each
cigarette apparently removed from the hat is of course the same one, being palmed whilst
seemingly placed in the left hand. Eventually, the free cigarette in the right hand is
disposed of in a metal cap attached to the secret pocket in the hat, which instantly
extinguishes the cigarette. The other cigarette is removed from the prong and placed
between the lips. The hat is demonstrated empty. If desired, the remaining cigarette may
also be vanished by my hooked-spring vanisher.

Notes: Again, these moves are not to be mastered in a day or two. Patience,
perseverance and a tolerable temper are necessary. There is a lot of truth in this last
remark.
Continuous Lighted Cigarette Production.
(Sleight-of-Hand Version.)
Effect: In all essentials, this is the same as the effect
already detailed for the lighted cigarette production
using the pin-fake.
It but remains to give the details of manipulation for
this version, which eliminates the fake, substituting
instead pure sleight-of-hand.
Explanation: One holder containing a lighted
cigarette is placed in the waistcoat pocket—this time,
the left pocket. The act proceeds as before, the
performer eventually causing the vanish of the
cigarette he has commenced with—this is
thumb-palmed in the right hand, and the same hand
goes to the waistcoat pocket, removing the second
lighted cigarette (Photo 1). The performer takes a puff
or two at this, then passing it to the left hand, whilst the
right hand makes a grasp in the ascending smoke and
produces the cigarette which it has thumb-palmed. The
performer turns to the right, showing the two
cigarettes, one in each hand, as Photo 2. He now lowers
the left hand, and apparently places the cigarette it
holds into the hat upon the table. This cigarette is
thumb-palmed as the hand passes inside the hat. The
left hand is removed from the hat, and brought up to
the right (Photo 3); the cigarette held in the right is
apparently taken by the left hand (Photo 4), and placed
in the hat. What really happens is that the right hand
back-palms the visible cigarette, whilst the left hand
simultaneously produces its thumb-palmed one; the
movements blending together to form a perfect
illusion. The sleights involved have already been dealt
with at some length in other sections of this work. The
production is continued on similar lines to the
foregoing one.

Notes: Commence practicing very slowly, until in time you feel a synchronizing
movement of both hands. Hard work will be necessary, but a beautiful deception will
result.
Miscellaneous Effects and Fakes
Of recent years many cigarette items have appeared on the magical market and in
various magical magazines. It is obviously next to impossible to mention them all, but the
following brief descriptions should serve as a useful guide.
Holders.
Several types are now in existence, the oldest probably being the Cigarette Dropper,
which the reader will no doubt be familiar with. This consists of a flat metal box, at the top
of which the cigarettes can be inserted, but they are prevented from coming out at the
bottom by a spring—this, however, can be worked by pressure of the performer’s fingers
to release one cigarette at a time. The dropper is sewn or pinned to the bottom edge of the
coat, usually on the right side, and during performance the cigarettes can be obtained one
at a time in the right hand, in a natural manner.
A new type of holder is shown in Fig. 1. This is very serviceable when correctly made,
and there is no mechanism entailed. The cigarettes are inserted at the top, as with the
previous holder, and the first falls down opposite a slot at the bottom, but is prevented
from falling out by the turned-up edges, as shown. The back of the holder is cut away in
semi-circular fashion. The holes shown allow it to be fastened to the bottom edge of the
coat. In this position it is easy to obtain a cigarette in the hand, by the simple process of
lifting it out of the slot—whereupon the next cigarette fails into place.
The latest type of holder for lighted cigarettes is shown in Fig. 2. This is of ingenious
construction, and fits into the vest pocket. The cigarette is held in position by vertical
springs, and will keep alight for a long period. This holder can be obtained from Messrs. L.
Davenport & Co., who have a similar design for three lighted cigarettes, and a special
producer for Six.
46
D. Deveen
The firm of Petrie-Lewis (U.S.A.) have recently advertised a holder which lights the
cigarettes as they are removed—the necessary requisites are not, however, obtainable in
this country.
Vanishers.
The usual vanisher consists of a metal tube, open at one end, the other end having
elastic attached. My own vanisher is shown in Fig. 3. A metal spring is attached inside,
and near the end of this spring a needle-point extends downwards. The advantage of this
lies in the fact that when once the cigarette is inside it is impossible for it to be dislodged
during performance.
Vanishers can also be made to take two or three lighted cigarettes; in this case tubes are
soldered together and made into one vanisher, on elastic as before.
A plated tube to vanish a cigarette can also be obtained, and is a useful item for the
cigarette worker. A lighted cigarette may apparently be placed in the tube, which is
afterwards discovered empty. The cigarette is actually a hollow metal tube, and provision
is made at one end for the insertion of a genuine piece of cigarette, which may be smoked.
The “Harlequin” Cigarette Holder (obtainable from Thayer in U.S.A. and Davenport in
London) may be used to vanish or produce a lighted cigarette, and works on the suction
principle allowing the cigarette to be drawn inside the holder, with the latter held between
the teeth. To produce, the cigarette can be as readily expelled. In conjunction with
manipulation, this is a worth-while item.
An excellent fake for vanishing and reproducing a lighted cigarette is marketed by
Thayer Manufacturing Co., under the title of “McCaffrey’s ‘Phantom’ Cigarette.” The
same firm advertises many other cigarette effects.

Expert Cigarette Magic
Rising Cigarette from Packet.
There have been several methods for performing this feat—quite a pretty effect for
commencement—the usual method being with a thread, one end of which is attached to a
cigarette in the packet, whilst the opposite end is fixed to the box. The thumb of the right
hand is engaged in the loop of thread and raised slowly upwards; causing the thread to
tauten and “levitate” the cigarette to the finger-tips. An interesting article on the effect
appeared in the Sphinx for June, 1931.
A modern idea in this connection is shown in Fig. 4. A small clip, having a projecting
needle-point, is used. This is secured on the forefinger of the right hand. The packet used
has a slot cut in the back, in which the needle-point can be made to work up and down.
Pressed against one of the cigarettes inside, it causes this to rise up. The back of the packet
should be strengthened by a thick piece of card. The cigarette having risen, it is removed
by the other hand, and there is no thread or other connection to get away with.
Cigarette Vanished to Packet.
The performer removes a cigarette from a packet, lights it, indulges in a few
manipulations, and finally vanishes the cigarette. Again removing the packet from his
pocket, he opens it and takes out the cigarette, still burning.
The first cigarette is vanished by the usual vanisher. A second cigarette, alight, has
previously been placed in the packet, which also has inside a small lighted-cigarette
holder. Easy and effective.
Cigarettes for Manipulation.
Dummy cigarettes are useful for some effects, although in general the reader is advised
to use the real article wherever possible. Rubber cigarettes are obtainable, and also
cigarettes made of wood.
For production use, a dummy cigarette having a clip permanently attached will be
found useful. This is shown in Fig. 5.
Another type of production fake is given in Fig. 6. This has a finger-clip on either side,
the two being connected by a piece of metal running through the cigarette near the end.
With this fake it is possible to reverse-palm.
Cigarette Stands.
Several new stands of my own design are shown in Figs. 7 to 10. One or more stands
add considerably to the effectiveness of one’s setting. In the case of the solid stands
48
D. Deveen
shown, cigarettes can be spring-hinged behind, to appear separately as the performer
apparently places them on the stand—thus making it possible to add still further to the
quantity actually produced.
Messrs. L. Davenport advertise a useful stand which can be readily combined with
manipulation.
Conclusion.
By this time the reader will have appreciated in full the fascinating possibilities which
come within the scope of Cigarette Magic, whilst at the same time he will understand that
in a book of this nature the author’s object has been not merely to describe tricks, but
rather to give the individual a selection of basic material from which to draw, and in
which to develop his own personality.
The reader has now had placed before him a sufficient variety of Cigarette Magic to
enable him to formulate a programme completely different from that which any other
magician is likely to perform.
With these final words I leave you to the task of practising and perfecting the art of
magic as exemplified by Cigarettes.
