In fact this was the first year that we achieved a Lost Time Injury Free Rate (LTIFR) of zero and we also saw exceptional improvements in all of our safety statistics. These outcomes are the result of targeted safety initiatives that have been introduced throughout the year, as well as an overall culture within our business of Safety First, Safety Foremost. In short, nothing will ever compromise the safety or well-being of our people. Indeed, Barminco focuses on providing the safest possible working environment at all times and takes pride in our safety performance. As an organisation, we’re focused on achieving unsurpassed standards in health, safety and the environment. Our safety record is underpinned by our commitment to innovation, which readers can learn more about in this newsletter. From the innovations identified in our strategic planning processes, to our commitment to the appointment of a dedicated Manager of Innovation, we are focused on delivering innovation throughout every aspect of our business. This will benefit both our current and future projects, and deliver superior client outcomes. In 2015 we are also proud of the development achievements on our projects. We have consistently over achieved for our clients, and are pleased of our record in development and production on our sites. We are now 7 months into operation at the Nova Project and have already achieved 1266 decline meters, over 230m ahead of the client schedule. We are also delighted to be Peter Stokes back at MMG’s Rosebery mine site, were we have been able to lift development output from 450m/m to 600m/m. From successfully ramping up production for many of our clients, to consistent delivery on or targets – we are committed to providing the very best service possible to the businesses with whom we work. As with all successful organisations, we are fortunate to have a strong Board to guide our organisation. On that note I would like to welcome Keith Gordon to the Barminco Board. As you will read, Keith brings a wealth of relevant experience, I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Peter Hatfull and Bruno Camarri for their great contribution to Barminco. Peter and Bruno retired from the Barminco Board earlier this year. And so, as we approach the end of the year, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our clients and partners for their support of Barminco throughout 2015. We wish you and your families a happy and safe Christmas and New Year. Stay safe over the festive season. 2016 is set to be an exciting year for us – watch this space for future updates. Peter Stokes page 3 BY HIS OWN ADMISSION, KEITH GORDON HAS BEEN EXTREMELY IMPRESSED BY HOW BARMINCO HAS MANAGED TO STAY ON TOP OF ITS GAME WITHIN A TOUGH MARKET. Our Barminco Keith, who holds a Bachelor of Sc (Agric) Hons and MBA from the University of Western Australia, says he was inspired and excited to join the Barminco board. “My philosophy on leadership is to inspire an organisation to be the best it can be,” he says. “It is important for a business to have a clear sense of purpose, but sometimes having a very structured vision can inhibit a company. It’s important to retain the flexibility to take opportunities as they come and as they’re presented.” “I’m also inspired by resilient businesses which keep their people safe, service customers well and who’s people work together as a team.” But when it comes to business priorities, Keith says safety has to be paramount in any businesses. “My first hands-on exposure to safety was at CSBP, a challenging work environment with many safety considerations. Whilst there, it became clear how people getting hurt at work impacts on them, their families and the business - and that shouldn’t be the case.” “Everyone has a right to go home in the way they come to work.” Keith Gordon Introducing Barminco Deputy Chair, Keith Gordon By his own admission, Keith Gordon has been extremely impressed by how Barminco has managed to stay on top of its game within a tough market. “Plus, having a great safety record is also good business, which is something that Barminco can be very proud of.” And when it comes to life outside work, Mr Gordon admits his personal life is equally as full and enriched as his professional life, with a wife, two children and two dogs who make up his family. “My daughter Rebecca has just finished a double degree and has since been travelling in Europe. She is now back and is about to embark on her first job in the banking sector as a graduate,” he explains. “Certainly Barminco has weathered the storm better than a number of its peers,” he says. “The company has demonstrated great resilience and capability.” “My son Andrew is currently studying commerce at UWA part time. He is quite the entrepreneur in the family and has taken an interest in lighting and sound which has led him to an event and management business which he started with a couple of mates. Andrew has told me: ‘I never want a job like yours Dad!’” This is true praise indeed from the former Managing Director and CEO of Emeco Holdings and a senior executive at Wesfarmers who was Managing Director of CSBP and led the post-merger integration of Coles. And then my wife Alex works part time in a school library. She studied science and we met at UWA, and to complement my family I also have two dogs, Max and Toby – a Maltese Poodle cross and Schnauzer cross. Keith also has 25 years’ of professional business experience in large global organisations. He’s currently the Chairman of GMA Garnet Group, the Chairman of EDGE Employment Solutions and until recently a director at Hay Group Australia. “My hobbies include travel and I also have a place at Ravenswood on the river, in between Mandurah and Pinjarra. I have a little boat down there and love going out on it. I’m fortunate as my life is very full and enriched.” page 4 Safety Hand Safety Safety first, safety foremost We never allow business imperatives to compromise the wellbeing of our people. Indeed, Barminco focuses on providing the safest possible working environment at all times and takes pride in our safety performance and strives for significant improvements each year. Light vehicle safety Barminco has introduced the use of In Vehicle Management Systems at Sunrise Dam, Flying Fox and Spotted Quoll. This technology helps ensure safe driver behaviours by monitoring: • Speeding • Harsh acceleration & braking • Over revving Without doubt, 2015 has been a challenging year, but also one with many successes. Most importantly, we achieved an outstanding outcome on safety, in fact this was the first year that we achieved an LTIFR of zero and we finished the year with no TRIs in June. As an organisation, we’re focused on achieving unsurpassed standards in health, safety and the environment. Hand safety campaign Following extensive consultation with the workforce and after working closely with our suppliers, we have identified several types and styles of gloves which are most suited to our risk areas and have been accepted well by those who wear them. The success of the program is demonstrated by the 75% reduction in recordable hand injuries, an achievement of which the Barminco team is extremely proud. • Handbrake and seatbelt compliance Although safety is always our absolute priority, Barminco is pleased to report that this initiative has also had the benefit of reducing diesel use and the cost of maintenance and repairs. Barminco best Barminco had a great year with Safety performance. Significantly, a ‘best in Barminco history’ reporting period has been recorded within the last financial year, with ‘0’ Lost Time Injuries, a 44% reduction in Total Recordable Injuries, and a 35% increase in lead indicators. Barminco has also been leading the change in our operating model, where HSE (health, safety and environment) is now integrated into line management expected outcomes and key performance indicators. We have also implemented a top down and bottom up consultation process which has been instrumental in giving the required HSE leadership visibility for all levels of the organisation. page 5 Innovation AS AN ORGANISATION, WE ARE FOCUSED ON ACHIEVING UNSURPASSED STANDARDS IN HEALTH, SAFETY AND THE ENVIRONMENT. Training facility in Tasmania In the relatively isolated region of the west coast of Tasmania, finding suitable training facilities has previously been difficult. But Barminco has recently opened a purpose-built and dedicated training facility at the Zeehan Batch Plant complex which has been designed to enable induction, procedural and competence-based training. It is equipped with bank of learning terminals so that our trainees can utilise our eLearning Platform. And along with classroom style learning, our new iPad Assessor Mobile Application allows our trainers to take training and assessing and upload directly to our systems. Working innovatively with our partners Barminco was pleased to have been identified as an innovator by one of our valued partners – MineARC. After recently approaching the company in relation to the development of modifications to the pre-existing MineARC Rock Bolt Cutter. Barminco has used the Rock Bolt Cutter for several years - a device originally engineered to cut rock bolts and threaded rod, but earlier in the year a growing requirement was identified for a model that was also capable of cutting cable bolts in a safe and more efficient manner. On Barminco’s suggestion, MineARC Engineers developed a simple yet highly effective solution to address the common safety concerns associated with cutting cable bolts - the Rock Bolt Cutter Projectile Safety Cap (PSC). A clever adaptor, the PSC connects to the end of the standard Rock Bolt waste tube, allowing cable bolts to be cut cleanly and safely within 30 seconds. The simple twist-to-open cap mechanism prevents waste segments from ejecting during operation and allows for the quick and easy disposal of cable bolt cuttings. Extensive trials of the Rock Bolt Cutter Projectile Safety Cap began in February, with very positive results. Located at the Zeehan Complex, we also have available many practical equipment demonstrations to augment the learning experience, notably work at height and operation of certain types of plant and machinery in controlled environments. “It has been a pleasure and privilege to work alongside MineARC whereby we were both ultimately aiming for a common goal to make the plating, tensioning and cutting of cable bolts safer and more efficient,” says Mark Reed, Barminco Project Manager. The Barminco Training Facility has been seen as a real asset to the West Coast Mining industry and is open for use by client attendees. “From the initial approach and proposal to MineARC to improve the safety of cutting cable bolts which did not require hot work permits, MineARC’s professionalism was resounding.” page 6 “INNOVATION ACROSS ALL AREAS AND FUNCTIONS OF OUR BUSINESS IS KEY TO THE FUTURE OF BARMINCO.” PETER STOKES CEO Sandvik DD422i “Being part of a team that has delivered a high quality product which will benefit the whole industry has been very rewarding for both Barminco and MineARC.” The Rock Bolt Cutter Projectile Safety Cap is currently being rolled out across Barminco sites. Thinking innovation Earlier this year Barminco’s strategic planning processes identified the need to consolidate our approach to Innovation. Subsequently, earlier this year Darren Kwok was appointed as Manager Innovation. With a background in technology, systems integration and R&D in the mining and engineering sector, Darren has picked up the innovation agenda and the many great improvements that were underway around the business, and this has been captured into a single strategic plan. This plan covers many facets of Barminco’s operations, including ground control efficiency, post blast entry times, data capture from both light and heavy equipment and reduction in damage and maintenance costs. As part of the strategy, an Innovations Committee with key Barminco stakeholders is being formed to review and implement captured ideas and solutions and, importantly, to ensure all facets of the business are included in the process. A portal to capture ideas will also be developed to facilitate easy lodgement of all ideas throughout the business. We firmly believe that additional innovation throughout our business will benefit our current and future projects, and ultimately increase our superior client service standards. From input to innovation Barminco is retiring its entire truck fleet of 54 pieces over the next three years and replacing them with new vehicles. And significantly, the entire fleet is to be made up of a single make and model of truck. Excitingly, Barminco’s one-model fleet replacement program is now underway. Five Sandvik TH663s were purchased in 2014, with a further six purchased this year - and there are more to come. But what is the Sandvik TH663? See below for more details. Fast facts •With an overall length of 11.58 m and a width of 3.48 m, the truck has an outside turning circle radius of 9.35 m. •Sandvik TH663 weighs in at 43 tonnes, approximately eight tons lighter than the model it has replaced, which is reflected in its fuel consumption. •Operator safety and comfort are enhanced by an ergonomic and noise suppressed safety cabin, 35% larger than on earlier models. •The new front frame suspension has been designed to reduce jamming vibrations that contribute to driver fatigue and can cause long-term back and shoulder problems. It has been designed with speed and safety of maintenance in mind. •Regular service points are accessible from ground level. •A unique feature of the truck is its built-in jack system which provides a much safer and faster means of changing a wheel in the event of a tyre blow-out underground. page 7 Innovation Stan Rolfe The next generation Sandvik Mining has announced the forthcoming release of its new DD422i development drill rig, the first of the company’s next generation underground hard rock drill rigs. And the exciting news is that Barminco already has its order in for the purchase of this latest technology. As you would imagine, the new rig will offer industry-leading levels of safety, productivity and automation. It includes a wide variety of new features for more efficient drilling and is the most advanced underground mining drill on the market. These include a completely redesigned and larger cabin, incorporating the highest levels of operator protection and comfort. Key safety features also include a Sandvik Access Detection system designed to reduce risks to workers who enter the rig’s operating area, readiness for remotely-operated functions that move workers from hazardous areas to locations where they can safely operate and a new cabin which is also available as an acid proof option. Ergonomic features include joystick controls, fully adjustable Control Panel and operator seating, significantly improved visibility through larger windows and improved illumination with LED lighting, reduced noise, heat and dust levels and an easyto-use touch-screen graphical user interface. The new Sandvik DD422i will be delivered to Barminco’s Sunrise Dam site shortly. page 8 Barminco on location in London What does virtual reality, London, recruitment and Barminco’s value of Excellence have in common? In September, all of these facets were combined as Barminco presented our adoption of a virtual reality tool to some of the world’s leading talent acquisition leaders. And, after much research, we believe this is a world first in terms of its application in the recruitment process. This journey started earlier this year, when Barminco identified an ongoing issue with the retention of its underground workforce. These team members - primarily working in entry level positions such as truck drivers and nippers - were resigning after one or two swings following their employment and first experience of working underground. While a number of reasons were given, one of the most frequent was that people were not cut out to work underground. And so it was decided that another way was needed to provide applicants with a realistic experience of the underground environment during the recruitment process. The focus was to get more people to opt out of the recruitment process when they realised it wasn’t for them, rather than getting to site and resigning. Partnering with our truck simulation provider Immersive Technologies, Barminco HSE&T and the resourcing Innovation / Business Systems team subsequently developed a low cost, portable virtual reality simulation to enable potential candidates who had never been underground to experience what it’s like during the interview process. Sustainable business development The simulation allows an individual to be a passenger in a LV which enters the portal and during the following three minutes, participants gain a basic introduction to an underground mine, with an interactive component of completing a SWICK. Barminco is committed to organisational sustainability and has embarked on the journey of measuring the business against the 10 key criteria of Sustainable Business Development as set by the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM). The experience was shared with a number of experienced Barminco employees who said it was as close as you can get to being underground. This innovative solution was subsequently noticed by a UKbased event organiser - Trumunity - and Barminco was invited to present at #TruLondon which was attended by more than 150 of the world’s leading talent acquisition and thought leaders. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, particularly as no other organisation has successfully deployed such technology. Head mounted virtual reality Barminco’s use of technology and Underground Machinery 3D Simulation has now extended to the use of Head Mounted Virtual Reality goggles. In partnership with our technology provider Immersive Technologies, we have led the development of a world-first use of a Virtual Reality Induction and Training program for underground mining. From potential candidates and inductees to existing employees, we now have the ability to give a near to real life learning experience in Hazard Identification and Emergency Response in a mine situation without placing the trainee at risk. We are also in discussion with clients about how we can collaborate in the development of virtual reality training content so that it meets both parties’ training needs and is specific to the client mine. Over the past year, Barminco has been methodically applying the ICMM framework in practice across all areas of our operation and, in doing so, has given ourselves a strong reporting framework for Sustainability Reporting. By building this operating and reporting model we aim to further strengthen our safety and environmental culture and broader stakeholder relationships within Australia and internationally. Business systems - SAP We have just gone live with our new SAP system to support our core Maintenance, Supply, Finance and HR/Payroll activities. This is a tremendous achievement for a company like Barminco, and prepares us well for servicing our key customers. Barminco’s core business is the deployment of the right combination of mobile equipment and people to drive underground development and production in a highly productive manner. Our new SAP system will help us better manage the maintenance of our fleet of equipment, and ensure spare parts and mining consumables are available at site for our mining fleet. Finally, the comprehensive finance and reporting features of our new SAP system will help us to understand all financial aspects of our business, allowing us to bid competitively for future work and ensuring our customers get maximum value from our services. page 9 Focusing on people Our staff - our most important asset Earlier this year, Barminco’s Diamond Drill supervisors participated in a two day workshop which was focused on leading others. This involved supervisors looking at their individual leadership style, how it impacts on others and, as a result, how improvements could be made to their work relationships through better communication and engagement. Significantly, this workshop also recently commenced in Tasmania, with leaders from both Rosebery and Renison taking part in August and November. In other training news, the Executive and Senior Leadership team attended the Vines for an overnight Leadership Forum, with the focus on supporting individual leaders to fully understand Barminco’s strategy, consider global actions to improve the results of the ‘Way We Work’ and understand the impacts of Project Veritas. Training and up-skilling our employees is important to Barminco. We believe that our team members are our greatest asset and we are focused on investing in our staff, which we believe ultimately benefits our valued clients. Our graduate program The Barminco Graduate Program intake takes place annually. The two year program provides the necessary experience to qualify for the certificates of competency required to obtain an underground shift supervisors certificate. Significantly, the growth and development of each graduate is promoted through the program’s focus on: • hands-on training in skills unique to careers in mining • exposure to many different underground mining methods and environments • the building of core leadership skills required to effectively manage people and teams To find out more about our Graduate Program visit www.barminco.com.au page 10 Meeting The Graduates Event, April 2015 Vacation program Barminco offers students in any year of study access to the Barminco Vacation Work Program. This program provides meaningful work experience, with trainees participating in a variety of assistant and trainee underground roles. Applicants are recruited to participate in the summer program and are often invited to return for the winter vacation period. Barminco encourages vacation work students to participate in further vacation work over the course of their degree, with the aim of enlisting them into the Graduate Program upon completion of their degree. For more information please contact our recruitment team on 9416 1000. Standards compliance Barminco has recently been re-certified by SAI Global against the Australian and International recognised standards ISO9001 (Quality Management), AS4801 (Safety Management) and ISO14001 (Environmental Management). These standards set out the requirements for effective management systems for Quality, Safety and the Environment – and being certified demonstrates that Barminco operates in line with international ‘best practice’. The auditors visited the Hazelmere facility, Nova and Rosebery mine sites in June where they interviewed people, inspected workplaces and reviewed records. The audit team verified that all previous actions had been closed out and raised no further non-conformances. The auditors were particularly impressed with Barminco’s efforts at continual improvement, including the Visual Leadership program and Barminco’s Leaders Diary. Working on behalf of our client MMG, Barminco is responsible for all development requirements at Rosebery Mine. And we’re extremely pleased to report that, together with MMG, Barminco achieved over 1,800m development metres over a three month period and completed this injury free - a great testament to everyone on site. Indeed, achieving over 600m in consecutive months had not been accomplished for several years and highlights that safe production can be achieved with a dedicated commitment towards Safety, Integrity and Excellence. As of the end of September, we’re also very pleased to have achieved over 125 injury free days which is an excellent team effort and, it goes without saying that our aim is to accumulate as many injury free days as possible. Like any project, there are always challenges to be faced, but at Rosebery we’re all about finding solutions and moving on to the next goal. Did you know? • Rosebery is expected to remain in operation until 2025, with Barminco’s current contract being a 3+2 year term. Rosebery Project Start-Up This result tops the massive 1,588 metres the Barminco team reached earlier this year and was achieved using the Atlas Copco U8 rig. It is one of the few rigs on the market which can drill more than 1,500 metres. The U8 is also faster, has lower gear ratios and uses a specialised rod handler. The champion Diamond Drill team at Wallaby are led by experienced supervisors. Together, they are productive and safe - the team celebrated 300 days being recordable injury free at the end of the drill. We’re also pleased to report there were no significant technical issues over the course of the drill. Overall a fantastic team effort, well done guys! • The inception of the contract was January, 2015 Discovering more about deep drilling The Wallaby Diamond Drill team has broken the Barminco record for the deepest hole at over 1,800 metres. This record has been achieved after more than 11 weeks of drilling, and reflects the dedication and professionalism of our Diamond Drillers. They work as an effective team to prove up ore bodies for our clients and have great camaraderie. page 12 Deep Drilling Spotlight on Sunrise Dam BARMINCO HAS BEEN INVOLVED FOR THE FULL 13 YEARS OF THE UNDERGROUND OPERATIONS AND IS ENGAGED TO BOTH DEVELOP THE MINE AND OVERSEE PRODUCTION Located 55 kilometres south of Laverton in Western Australia’s North Eastern Goldfields region, the Sunrise Dam Gold Mine represents an important contract for Barminco, with a revenue of more than $90 million per year, and a team of over 220 employees on site. Working for our client Anglo Gold Ashanti, Barminco has been involved for the full 13 years of the underground operations and is engaged to both develop the mine - which has a mine life of another 10 plus years - and oversee production. Under the leadership of Project Lead Team members Rodger Murdoch and Craig Metzke, the large-scale, longhole open stope mining operation is currently running at ~2.8Mtpa. Pleasingly, Barminco has a long life contract at Sunrise Dam and is focused on continuing to develop strong client relations. Did you know? • The challenges of this project are lower gold grades of 2.5g/t to 3.5g/t • The orebody is complex and nuggetty, making ore delineation challenging Fast facts • Development metres: 900m/m with 2 jumbos • Safety stats: TRIFR~8 Sunrise Dam page 13 Projects Barminco - facing challenges head on, and succeeding! Barminco works on projects all around the world and in some of the most remote and challenging locations possible – just like our Sukari Hills project, which is located 700 kilometres south of Cairo and 25 kilometres from Marsa Alam on the Red Sea. Working for our client Centamin, Barminco is the only underground contractor at Sukari and is responsible for all development, stopping, load haul operations, air leg rising and diamond drilling work on site. Significantly, Barminco has been tasked with training the national workforce and there are now a number of underground roles being carried out by Egyptian workers. To facilitate this, toolbox meetings are translated from English to Arabic so all personnel understand instructions for the day and we also have radio controllers translating to the operators underground. The workforce reside in rented apartments in Marsa Alam, with expats working 6/3 rosters and the national workforce working 20 days on and 10 days off. Interestingly, the project team has its own kitchen and housekeeping staff, as well as resident doctor. The large-scale open pit and underground gold mine consists of two declines, access and ore drives and the current targets are for 700 metres development and the production of 90,000 tonnes of ore each month – quite a challenge! Very pleasingly, 2015 has seen the mine develop to a position where all client targets are being realised - not an easy task on a project with so many challenges. But when things are running smoothly, our team are adamant that the positives outweigh the many obstacles faced with operating in such a remote part of the world. Under the leadership of Paul Landers, Jordan Paterson and Rhys Harvey, there are 75 expats involved with the project, in addition to 150 nationals. Currently our contract is for two years – with an expected mine life of beyond 10 years – and the goal for Sukari is to be one of Barminco`s leading mine sites, both for safety and production. Sukari Hills page 14 Barminco at our best with the Nova Project The Nova Project is an exciting new Nickel and Copper deposit under development in the largely unexplored Fraser Range, with access being gained via the Eyre Highway. Located in the remote Fraser Range, approximately 120km east of Norseman and 220km south west of Kalgoorlie, the project is set to have a mine life of 10+ years. Our client, Independence Group NL (IGO), and prior to that Sirius Resources, has engaged Barminco to develop the underground mine and undertake all production activities underground. Under the leadership of Project Managers Aaron Rankine and Percy Porter, there are 27 Barminco personnel on site and we’re pleased to report that there have been no reportable injuries on the project to date. In fact, September was 254 days TRI free! This is reflective of Barminco’s commitment to excellence in safety. High speed development has been an outstanding result for the project from commencement. The past 3 months alone has averaged 341 development metres in a single heading operation. Barminco is very proud of its workforce at Nova, who through their safety performance and dedication have achieved this envious target for others to follow. Did you know? • The Ngadju People are the traditional owners of the land. • Power for the site is to be generated on-site by a 16 megawatt predominantly diesel-fire power station with solar substitution. • The processing plant will consist of conventional crushing, grinding by open circuit SAG mill followed by a ball mill in closed circuit, and sulphide flotation to produce separate copper and nickel concentrates. Fast Fact • The Ore Reserve estimate comprises 13.1Mt grading 2.1% nickel, 0.9% copper and 0.07% cobalt for a contained 273,000t of nickel, 112,000t of copper and 9,000t of cobalt. Nova Project Yaramoko Project Adding value in Africa Barminco is proud of its work and track record in Africa, where we have been focused on bringing Australian standards of mining to the African market for many years. Currently our work is being carried out under the name of African Underground Mining Services (AUMS), which is a joint venture formed in 2007 between ourselves and Ausdrill. Significantly, between our companies we have more than a quarter of a century’s experience operating in Africa. One of the more interesting projects Barminco is currently involved with is Yaramoko, a relatively new site which we commenced work on in July 2015. This exciting new gold project is situated on rich ground utilising narrow vein mining techniques, and there are currently a fleet of four drills and five loaders ready to deliver the client’s requirements on this highly prospective, ever-increasing tenement in an exciting geographical location in Burkina Faso. And significantly, we’re very pleased to report that AUMS has recorded 500 days LTI free for the group workforce of over 800 personnel, 140 western expatriates, and 40 intra-African expatriates. That represents more than 2.5 million man hours and we feel the entire team deserves recognition for this impressive performance. We’ll be sure to bring you further details on this significant Barminco Project in future newsletters. Fast Facts • The Yaramoko project consists of portal construction and decline, ARMCO tunnel construction, development and production works. page 15 Disclaimer The 2015 Barminco Client Magazine is published by Barminco Marketing & Communications.
