STATION BREAK
In, On and Around Channel 9
by Terri Gates
T
his has been an important year for Channel 9, and we
want to thank you for your support. You have made
KETC the highest-rated, most-watched public television
station in America, and you have worked with us to tackle
some serious issues.
We are proud to meet the high expectations of our
members, with the best in culture, the arts, history, science,
KETC President and
public affairs and children’s programming. We are also proud
CEO Jack Galmiche.
that you support our value to the region beyond broadcast.
Our work on the mortgage crisis exemplifies what communities can do when
they combine their resources. With our community partners, we are having
a measurable impact in our region. The crisis continues, but thousands have
avoided foreclosure and received financial counseling as the result of our work.
The Corporation for Public Broadcasting has now asked us to lead a national
effort to replicate our model of community engagement on the mortgage crisis.
We have also been able to strengthen and showcase our region through
productions such as our promotions of science and upcoming PBS documentary
on First Robotics; our program on the future of communications, marking
the centennial of the Missouri School of Journalism; and our region’s first,
continuous, live local and national election coverage, on air and online.
We recently received the Missouri Governor’s Humanities Award for our
work. Thank you for making our work possible.
Yours truly,
Jack Galmiche

Telecourses End
F
or nearly 30 years, Channel 9 has
offered adults the chance to go to
college via on-air telecourses—collegelevel instruction broadcast for students
in the early morning hours. Pupils could
enroll in a class through a college or
university, watch instructional programs
on Channel 9 and earn college credit.
More than 225,000 students have taken
advantage of this alternative to traditional
classrooms. Courses like It’s Strictly
Business, Planet Earth, A Biography of
America and Voices in Democracy built an
audience of non-students, as well: early
risers who simply enjoyed learning from
interesting, high-quality TV programs.
But now other forms of technology have caught up with telecourses.
CD-ROMs, DVDs, the Web, e-mail,
streaming video and Blackboard give
more f lexibility than ever to nontraditional learning methods. Beginning
in Ja nua r y, t he Missou ri-Il linois
Telelearning Consortium will no longer
present telecourses on Channel 9. The
learning will continue, however, with
KETC’s regular lineup of entertaining
and educational programs.

the United States will flip the switch
that will turn off analog television—
the system used in this country since
TV began. As of that Tuesday, there’s
no going back. Digital is the new
broadcasting standard.
Channel 9 is broadcasting digitally now,
so if your TV set cannot receive channels
9.1, 9.2, 9.3 and 9.4, by February 17
you need to install a converter box, buy a
digital television, or subscribe to a cable
or satellite provider. Throughout January,
KETC will join other St. Louis stations in
simultaneous digital broadcasting tests.
During these periodic tests, all stations will
temporarily turn off analog airwaves and
broadcast only digitally. An analog slide
will alert viewers who are not digital ready.
For more information, call Channel 9’s
digital hotline at (314) 512-9196.
Everyone is eligible to receive from the
government two coupons worth $40
toward the purchase of a digital converter
box. If you have unexpired coupons that
you don’t need, please send them to us!
Channel 9 is collecting unused coupons to
distribute to people who have lost theirs or
discover that they are too late to apply for
them. Send them to: Angela Smith, KETC,

Question
the most heartbreaking statistic showed
that children in low-income families
enter kindergarten having heard up to
30 million fewer words than their
peers in working-class and professional
families. These children aren’t in
language-rich environments, so teaching
them how to sound out words isn’t
enough. It seems obvious, but if you
teach a child how to sound out the word
‘cope,’ it won’t get them very far if they
don’t know what the word cope means.”

S har in g Sec r ets
Without intending to, an entire generation
of kids watching television in the 1970s
improved their reading and comprehension
skills thanks to The Electric Company,
a fast-paced romp through literacy
using clever comedy sketches featuring
the likes of Bill Cosby, Rita Moreno,
Morgan Freeman and Irene Cara.
In January, The Electric Company
returns, hoping to plug in to the mediadriven generation of today with a fresh
cast ready to deliver the message that
“reading is cool.”
The Electric Company is brought to
life with a narrative storyline, music
videos, sketch comedy, animation and
short films. The episodes are written by
the talents who penned the scripts for
Broadway, film and television projects
including Dreamgirls, Blades of Glory
and Law & Order: Criminal Intent. They
provide the creative wattage for serious
education goals aimed at kids age 6–9.
“The literacy crisis today is as
pervasive and alarming as it was in 1971
when we created the first version of
The Electric Company,” states Scott
Cameron, director of education and
research for Sesame Workshop, the
producer of The Electric Company.
“Vocabulary development wasn’t part of
the original Electric Company, but in the
last 30 years, a great deal of research has
shown that a rich vocabulary is essential
to reading success. When you’re working
on a literacy project, you encounter a
lot of really sad statistics, but for me

The programs were filmed on location
in a stunning vineyard kitchen in Northern
California and also in the kitchens of his

Panelists on Facing the Mortgage Crisis (L-R) Stephen Acree, Regional Housing and Community
Development Alliance; Pamela Tucker Coaxum, Enterprise Community Partners; host Ruth Ezell;
Chris Krehmeyer, Beyond Housing; and Karen Wallensak, Catholic Charities.
by Terri Gates
The community joined Channel 9’s Facing the Mortgage Crisis,
changing lives and positively impacting the entire region.
ue Livingston, 61, and her husband both work, and they
always have.
For 28 years, she was in the Army Reserve, working her
way up to master sergeant. When not on active duty, she held
various civil service jobs for the federal government, plus a parttime job. Her husband, Timothy, 57, is a machinist who has
worked nearly 40 years for the same company.
They are not the type of people who come to mind when
picturing a family facing financial ruin, and yet in May 2008,
the Livingstons received a foreclosure notice in the mail.
Despite their steady incomes, the Livingstons’ finances
suffered through a perfect storm, compounded by Missouri’s
extremely short window for foreclosure procedures. Timothy,
who was accustomed to working seven days a week, had his
weekly hours cut back to 40. Sue was locked into a low-paying
job out of state working for FEMA; she faced thousands
of dollars in penalties if she quit before a year’s time. Their
savings had gone to help out Sue’s son, daughter-in-law and
grandchildren, whose home was destroyed in a fire.
As someone who grew up in the heart of Ohio, the daughter
and granddaughter of business owners, and later as a single
mom making $175 a week, Livingston’s life was a model of
Tune In:
independence and self sufficiency. She had no experience
looking to outside resources for help, so five months before the
foreclosure notice even arrived, she had begun trying to contact
her mortgage company to renegotiate her payments. She knew
her financial problems were temporary, and would improve as
soon as she could retire and start drawing from her military
pension. But the mortgage company evaded her attempts, saying
only that she should find an “agency” or a church for advice.
That’s when Livingston turned on the television and saw
a promo on Channel 9 for the two-part special Facing the
Mortgage Crisis. The Livingstons tuned in.
“I never thought I would see anything as helpful as Facing the
Mortgage Crisis,” says Livingston. “Since then I’ve been able to
breathe, I’ve been able to sleep, I’ve been able to eat and I feel
like a thousand pounds is off my shoulders.”
Livingston called Linda Ingram of Beyond Housing, one of
the experts featured on the special, and provided her with the
25 pages of documents Livingston herself had already faxed to
her lender. Though unresponsive to Livingston, the mortgage
company dealt with Ingram. “The foreclosure was cancelled
right then, right there,” recounts Livingston. “Linda Ingram
has been the best angel on Earth.”
Watch Facing the Financial Crisis, broadcast Tuesday, January 27 at 7:00 p.m.,
and rebroadcast Saturday, January 31 at 2:00 a.m. and Sunday, February 1 at noon.
With Ingram’s help, Sue and Timothy now have a fixedrate, 30-year mortgage on the modest home they purchased 10
years ago in Charlack. They have a lower interest rate and pay
just $10 more per month than they did previously. (Ironically,
they must repay the lender for fees it incurred while trying to
foreclose upon their house.)
The Livingstons represent just one of hundreds of area families
helped by Channel 9’s ongoing Facing the Mortgage Crisis
initiative. “I had been crying all day, praying for help [with my
mortgage]. Then I turned on the television and I saw your show,”
writes another viewer, who asked to remain unidentified.
Facing the Mortgage Crisis is a community engagement
initiative led by KETC. It is a model that can leverage public
media capabilities on-air, online and in the community to
address substantive issues that impact the entire region. The
work connected people of the St. Louis region to foreclosure
prevention resources through a network of trusted community
partners mobilized by public media. The initiative also raised
awareness about the impact of the mortgage crisis throughout
the St. Louis area.
Since beginning the initiative in summer 2008, KETC has
engaged the community, coalescing expertise and communitywide participation through partnerships with a variety of
organizations that play a role in housing matters, from social
service groups to municipalities, government agencies, financial
institutions, legal service organizations, the Federal Reserve
Bank of St. Louis, the FBI, libraries, and many more. This
network continues to be instrumental in identifying the best
way to focus efforts, develop key messages and determine the
most effective means of communicating to people in need as
worsening financial conditions exacerbate the mortgage crisis.
Key partners, the United Way of Greater St. Louis, Beyond
Housing, Catholic Charities Housing Resource Center, Better
Family Life and the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis,
have taken the calls and counseled people drawn to the resources
publicized by Facing the Mortgage Crisis.
KETC created on-air messages based on the partners’ input,
ranging from brief spots to Living St. Louis segments to the
two, hour-long specials seen by Sue Livingston. Online, KETC
developed a Web site for the project (www.ketc.org/mortgagecrisis)
that includes video of the broadcast components, plus resources,
links, maps, blogs, general information and many interactive
options. The St. Louis Beacon online news source ran related
stories, and KETC representatives mobilized the community in
person, at events, meetings and forums.
The mortgage crisis initiative has made a difference that is
evident in measurable results, the testimonials of community
partners and the stories of individuals whose lives have been
changed. An independent assessment of Facing the Mortgage
Crisis by a team from the University of Wisconsin-Madison
concluded that KETC’s efforts raised significant awareness
about the mortgage crisis, encouraged people to seek more
information and provided pathways to assistance. Directing
people in need to the United Way’s 2-1-1 hotline was one aspect
of the project that generated statistically significant results.
After the broadcast of Facing the Mortgage Crisis, the 2-1-1
hotline received a combined 8,400 calls for mortgage assistance
and financial information in just two months—a 400 percent
increase over prior months.
“The fact that Channel 9 has created a way to reach lots of
people and lots of families is just tremendous,” says Beyond
Housing’s Linda Ingram. “The reason that so many people are
calling into your shows is because people trust you.”
Echoes Chris Krehmeyer, president of Beyond Housing,
“Kudos to KETC for having the courage to see what’s happening
today and address it.”
In addition to helping individual families, Facing the
Mortgage Crisis has brought together various agencies in a reallife demonstration that there is strength in numbers, that the
whole is more powerful than separate parts. KETC’s role in
this project was not so much as a presenter of information, but
as a convener—an agent to assemble many diverse experts to
work on one unwieldy, multi-faceted problem that impacts the
community in many ways.
“Our work on the mortgage crisis initiative has demonstrated
what can happen when social networks are revived, when trusted
partners come together for the welfare of the community, and
what strengths we can gain through our collective power when
we work together on common goals,” says KETC President and
CEO Jack Galmiche. “We find solutions.”
Adds Gary Dollar, president and CEO of the United
Way of Greater St. Louis, “It has been great to partner with
other organizations around such an important cause in this
community. We’ve expanded what we all do. We’ve all become
better at what we do. We’ve all reached more people because of
this partnership.”
The mortgage crisis was the first symptom of the country’s—
and the world’s—burgeoning financial crisis. Now that the
tools are in place, Facing the Mortgage Crisis will broaden
its scope to address the larger economic crisis and its impact
on our community. In January, KETC producer and Facing
the Mortgage Crisis host Ruth Ezell will be back with another
special exploring how the mortgage crisis has expanded into an
economic crisis, the impact it’s had on communities and what’s
being done on a community level to stabilize neighborhoods.
For Sue Livingston, thankfully, her crisis is over, but by
sharing her story, she hopes to let other “regular, middle-class
people” like her know that assistance is available.
“If I just help one family not go through what I did, I’ve
accomplished a mission.”

mong the talented scientists, craftsmen
and engineers driven from Germany
by Adolph Hitler were many giants of
the film industry. Shortly after becoming
chancellor, Hitler banned Jews from
working in movies. But Hitler’s prejudice
was Hollywood’s gain. Actors Felix Bressart,
Hedy Lamarr and Peter Lorre; and directors
Fritz Lang, Henry Koster, Billy Wilder and
Fred Zinnemann were among those who
brought their artistic genius to California
and contributed to the canon of America’s
cinema classics.

to a multimillionaire’s experience of travel

statement of not wanting her children filmed

movies and glad for her and her millionaire
lifestyle but the rest does not interest me.

CONSUMMATE ARTIST
Thank you for showing this program
[Landscapes Through Time With David
Dunlop]. David Dunlop is so interesting and
entertaining anyone who watches this show
can’t help but enjoy it. Mr. Dunlop brings
to life not only the artist but the work of the
artist. Even viewers who know very little
about the history of landscape painters will
be impressed by Mr. Dunlop’s enthusiasm,
knowledge and charm. I can’t wait to see
each week’s new segment. Channel 9 has
certainly continued its tradition of quality
programming with this series.

the Ronald McDonald House.
Zi m merma n, t he pre sident of
Zimmerman Marketing Research, says
he increased his contributions to KETC
gradually over the years, inspired one time
by the chance to attend a Sissel concert. He
served on the station’s Legacy 9 committee,
which led, much to his surprise, to an
invitation to join the board.
“Quality” is a word Zimmerman
often uses to describe Channel 9. He likes
quality programs like Masterpiece Theatre,
American Masters, American Experience and
Washington Week. “I’ve always been one
who thinks there’s no such thing as a free
lunch,” he states. “If you want something
good, you should be willing to pay for it.
It’s important to support quality programs
for others because it
elevates the quality of life
for our community.”
Dan O’Donnell
Education is always
top-of-mind for KETC
board of directors member
Dan O’Donnell. O’Donnell, formerly
the superintendent of the Francis Howell
www.visitationacademy.org
School District, joined KETC’s board
when he retired at age 54. He says it’s
interesting to observe the internal workings
of a TV station and welcomes the chance
to help the community. He has also lent
his education expertise to ad hoc education
committees for the Magic House, the
Saint Louis Zoo and CharacterPlus.
In addition to education, O’Donnell’s
passion is music, and he enjoys the variety
of Channel 9’s music programming.
He says he appreciates everything from
Celtic Woman to classical offerings, with
a particular fondness for Live From the
Sheldon because of its focus on local
artists. But O’Donnell’s tastes are eclectic;
he also likes programs about science, Ken
Burns’ The War and Living St. Louis.
He supports Channel 9 “because we
need an independent source of accurate
information that doesn’t force one viewpoint.
That’s a critical role in any community.”
O’Donnell believes the station’s greatest
asset, in addition to an “outstanding staff,”
is local programs like Donnybrook and Living
St. Louis because they are the “face” of KETC
in the community. They show not only
Channel 9 at its best; they show the best of
St. Louis, as well.

Most Epic Stories
Ever Told
January is a big movie month, literally.
Screen epics abound, from William
Wyler’s massive 1959 story of survival
and revenge Ben-Hur ( January 3,

David Lean’s sweeping 1965 account of
Russia’s Bolshevik revolution in Doctor

For the sheer audacit y of the
title alone, though, have a look at
George Stevens’ career-capping The
Greatest Story Ever Told (January 3,
11:30 p.m.). A moniker like that
practically begs critics to knock it down
a peg or two, as many did when it was
released in 1965. But the large-scale Dustin Hoffman (L) and Tom Cruise in Rain Man.

Rain Man is the story of an ambitious

The world’s largest democracy and a
rising economic giant, India is now as
well known in the U.S. for its mastery
of computer technology as it is for its
many-armed gods and its spiritual
traditions. But India is also the world’s
most ancient surviving civilization,
with unbroken continuity stretching
back into prehistory. In the first history of India on Western television,
historian Michael Wood chronicles India’s incredible richness and diversity
of peoples, cultures and landscapes,
and shows that while moving at high

still in touch with her ancient past.

His nose knows, and so do New York’s
toughest critics. Assessing St. Louis native Kevin Kline’s (pictured) foray into
the treacherous waters of Broadway—
as Edmond Rostand’s proboscisly
challenged 17th-century warrior-poet
Cyrano de Bergerac—The New Yorker
summed it up for all: “Kevin Kline is
sensational.” The sold-out limited
engagement, which also starred
Jennifer Garner and Daniel Sunjata,
closed in January 2008, but not before
being captured by PBS for this special
broadcast. “I’ve wanted to play this
part ever since I saw it in high school,”
Kline says. “He’s living a life as large as
life gets, if not larger. I think it’s very
romantic.”

Did you hear the one about PBS airing a comedy series, and it’s not a
Britcom? It’s no joke, but it sure is
funny. A six-hour comedy epic hosted
by Billy Crystal (pictured), this series
showcases the most hilarious men,
women and moments and why they
made us laugh. Melding performance,
biography and history with interviews,
Make ‘em Laugh explores the currents
of American comedy throughout a
century of change, illuminating how
comedy has poked fun at politics, race,
gender and the prevailing American
standards of everyday life.

Opinion poll after opinion poll show
that a vast majority of Americans believe the world is facing a global climate crisis. We are willing to pay more
for cleaner energy, and we want our
government to take appropriate action to help mitigate the crisis, but we
frankly don’t have a clue what those
actions should be or how the various energy “solutions” we hear about
can help. To look at actual alternative energy solutions being put into
action, Nova shines the spotlight on
California—an oasis of conservation
in an energy-hungry country. Does
California know something about energy the rest of the nation does not?

For many Americans, the Iran of today is a strange and dangerous place.
But Iran is an ancient country that has
been a leader in its corner of the world
for 2,500 years. To better understand
this nation of 70 million people, Rick
Steves (pictured) journeys to Iran.
Steves visits the splendid monuments
from Iran’s rich and glorious past and
discusses the 20th-century story of this
perplexing nation. The special vividly
captures today’s Persian culture: from
Friday prayer in a leading mosque to
challenges confronting Iran’s youth,
anti-American murals, a family dinner, the tranquility of rural life and the
frenzied traffic of modern Tehran.

J. Robert Oppenheimer’s (pictured)
life and legacy are inextricably linked
to America’s most famous top-secret
initiative—the Manhattan Project.
But after World War II, this brilliant
mind, tasked with the development of the atomic bomb, fell from
the innermost circles of American
science. Interweaving interviews
with dramatic re-creations featuring
Academy-award nominated actor
David Strathairn, this two-hour film
follows Oppenheimer’s fascinating
arc from the heady world of international physics to the dark days of
McCarthyism.

Almost always you know it’s there not
by sight, but by smell. Its infamous
weapon is one of the most awful scents
in all of nature. It’s a familiar but mysterious creature in woods and neighborhoods all across America. That’s right,
we are talking about the skunk. Now,
intrepid researchers and cameramen
track skunks day and night across California, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Ohio,
even Martha’s Vineyard, uncovering
how they hunt, forage, mate and raise
amazingly cute babies—all the things
they’re up to when they’re not spraying your dog. And yes, the remarkable
secrets of that stink will be revealed!

The Assassination of
Abraham Lincoln
On April 14, 1865, Abraham Lincoln
(pictured) was assassinated. Over the
next 12 days, the largest manhunt
ever attempted closed in on his assassin, the 26-year-old actor John Wilkes
Booth. “It was with the assassination
that the myth of Abraham Lincoln was
born. Lincoln was not universally liked
or beloved during his presidency. Millions hated him. Once he was assassinated, everything changed,” says
James L. Swanson, author of a book
about the murder and a Lincoln authority interviewed in this 90-minute

months in America’s history.

America’s free press has deep roots in
St. Louis. The Missouri Press Association
celebrates the rich heritage of Missouri
journalists with this hour-long documentary about small-town weeklies
and urban dailies, beginning with the
first newspaper in Missouri, started in
1808 in St. Louis. Publishers and editors
recount stories from the days of hot
type and newspaper carriers hawking
copies on street corners, and compare
them to today’s modern newsrooms
and use of the Internet. Publications
featured include the St. Louis American,
St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Hannibal Courier
Post and Washington Missourian.

Cats and Dogs
AF T ERNOON

Americans own 73 million dogs and
90 million cats, considering them best
friends, soul mates, family members
and even surrogate children. Why are
we so attached? To find out, Nature
changes its filmmaking technique a
bit to obtain in-studio interviews with
pet owners that are insightful, heartwarming and funny. Biologists, animal
behaviorists and others weigh in, of
course, but they can’t top personal
stories such as the one about Jerry, a
three-legged canine amputee whose
owners sold their home and business
to enjoy Jerry’s last months by traveling with him cross-country.

As a producer of the series Dance in
America, Judy Kinberg worked with
iconic director/choreographer Jerome
Robbins(pictured)(WestSideStory,Gypsy,
Peter Pan). “Robbins was a handful and
a half,” she recalls. “He was demanding,
unsympathetic to our problems, funny,
scathingly honest, told great stories, and
had the best eye of anyone with whom
I’ve worked. ...It was often so painful that
I promised myself I would never work
with him again. And then I did.” She returns to Robbins again in this two-hour
portrait, featuring performance and rehearsal footage, and over 40 interviews.

Faubourg Treme is arguably the oldest
black neighborhood in America. During slavery, it was home to the largest
community of free black people in the
Deep South. In the early 1800s, while
most African Americans were toiling
on plantations, free black people in
Treme were publishing poetry and
conducting symphonies. Long before
Rosa Parks, Treme leaders organized
sit-ins and protests that successfully
desegregated the city’s streetcars and
schools. Now, post-Katrina, the neighborhood is once again fighting many
of the same civil rights battles first
launched there 150 years ago.
