Greetings members from “deep in the heart of Texas”!
I wonder how many of you remember that song. Donna and
I left Camperland on Sept 1st on a trip we have dreamed
about for a number of years. We headed right across Canada
visiting all the Maritime Provinces and then down the east
coast right to Key West, Florida. We are now heading west for
California. We have put over 9000 miles so far on the coach
and we have stayed in many interesting RV parks. It has been
both interesting and educational for me
to see the variety of amenities throughout
the many parks we have visited. One park
that we stayed at in North Carolina did NOT
accept cash as payment, but the next one
we visited would accept ONLY cash. I have
always found it interesting to watch and
see how other parks are managed. Many
stories to tell – but I’ll save some of those
for the member appreciation weekends.
Something new that we are in the process
of putting together is the HTR Vacation Club.
Without going into a lot of detail here, this
will offer members and non-members an
opportunity to purchase dedicated access
to our camping cabins. We have put our first
cabin in place at Camperland and the cabins at
Sunshine Valley and possibly some of the cabins at Manning
Park Resort will also be included. This type of ownership used to
be called timeshare however, most of the high end companies
refer to it as vacation ownership. In essence, this will allow a
family who are not RV’ers to enjoy the RV lifestyle while staying
in a cabin at one of our resorts. Cabin camping has become
extremely popular in the US and I feel the same is in the process
of happening here. KOA, for example, have camping cabins at
over 75% of their 400 plus parks. We plan to add additional
cabins at Camperland. More details regarding these plans will
be available in the spring. At this time of year I start looking
forward to a new camping season which is just a few months
away. The dates for the member appreciation weekends are in
this newsletter and although it’s a very
busy few weeks, I do enjoy talking
to our members and of course
flipping burgers!

On a different topic – Cuba! Last year we promoted a trip to
Cuba but because there wasn’t enough interest at the time
it didn’t happen. Things are changing in Cuba – if you have

Last year was a very successful year for us
at all of our parks with the exception of
Bridgeview. Some of you may not know
that we had another flood there last year (we had a similar
flood the previous year but this one was more severe). We
also had to make a management change at Bridgeview midseason and Velvet Hughes stepped in to operate the park for
the balance of the season. She did an excellent job and will
be the new permanent manager there for this season. A big
thank you to our retired managers Don and Adeline Murfin for
assisting Velvet during this time. At all of our other parks our
member usage was up as was our non-member usage. This
is something that I feel we will continue to see as there are
still not new RV parks being built in BC or Alberta. RV sales in
both provinces remain good which means more families are
entering the RV lifestyle. These folks will have an increasingly
hard time finding quality parks to stay at in the future. In the
past year I have had additional meetings with numerous MLA’s
and provincial ministers continuing to voice my concerns
about this situation. As usual they appear concerned and
interested but nothing changes. In the US I have seen new
parks being built in most states and the problem doesn’t seem
as noticeable.
never been to Cuba or would like to revisit, now is the perfect
time! President Obama is in the process of opening the doors
wide for our American friends to visit Cuba. People in the travel
business in both US and Canada are saying that as soon as US
residents are permitted to visit the country there will be huge
increase in prices and access will become difficult. Cuba had
2.5 million visitors last year, 1.2 came from Canada. The details
of our planned “member and friends” trip will be made known
as soon as we put the package together. I can tell you that it
will be an all-inclusive resort in Veradero. There
will be a one or two week option and the trip
will most likely take place right after Christmas
2015. Donna & I will be there to assist any first
timers to Cuba and help with any issues that
may arise.

Park Updates & Whats Going On!
As we look forward to 2015 and our 32nd year, Holiday Trails RV Resorts continues to set the standard for quality, high end RV Resorts. Last season
we set our priority as a company on making it easier than ever for our HTR family of members and guests to get out to our locations and live the
dream with us. Holiday Trails Resorts rolled out a brand new online reservation system for our members. This system was embraced by the vast
majority of our members who now have the ability to book, edit and cancel their own reservations from any online device at any time. This system
was designed specifically for Holiday Trails and is an amazing piece of software that puts our guests very much in the driver’s seat when it comes to
booking vacations. Instructions for online booking can be found in the HTR member section of the Holiday Trails website.
Holiday Trails RV Resorts also saw a system wide installation of free Wi-Fi hotspots. In addition to the convenience of being able to access Tengo
internet directly at your site for a modest fee, the addition of these free Wi-Fi hotspots allow our guests to check in via social media at our resorts,
instantly becoming the envy of all their online friends.
Sunshine Valley & Camping Cabins
Wow! It is hard to believe that Sunshine Valley RV Resort was built 4
years ago already but you know what they say: “time flies when you are
having fun” and there is no better place than Sunshine Valley to let loose
and have some down time. Be it a dance, pool party or ATV ride through
the mountains Sunshine Valley has something for everyone. Manager
Joanne Taylor and her husband Brian continue to promote this wonderful
destination
resort
and it is very quickly
becoming the go to
location for those
from the Fraser
Valley.

With the beautiful
mountain backdrop
and huge clubhouse
Sunshine Valley has
also found itself very
popular with brides
to be, hosting 6 weddings last year alone. These large celebrations have
been wonderful for showcasing our resort and attracting more guests
every year.

The addition of the off leash dog area has been greatly appreciated
by guests with four legged travel companions both in RVs and those
using our pet friendly cabins. Remember when using these off leash
areas, Holiday Trails supplies baggies for cleaning up after your pooch.
Please be sure to pick up after Fido so everyone can enjoy this additional
amenity.

We have completed construction of a Maintenance shop across the
road from the RV resort property. This allows us to work on projects
during the day with a minimal disruption to our guest holiday time.
Connected to the new maintenance shop is a brand new fire hall for the
Sunshine Valley Volunteer Fire department. Sunshine Valley RV Resort
has partnered with Sunshine Valley Developments Ltd. to complete this
project over the winter In addition to donating a beautiful fire truck.
Bridgeview RV Resort
We are happy to announce that Velvet Hughes who started last season
as manager of Coquihalla Campground has been officially hired as
the new resort manger of Bridgeview RV Resort for 2015. Velvet has
a distinguished career with BC parks and her excellent organization
skills and winning personality are a welcome addition to our Southern
Alberta park. Joining Velvet will be Brett Ainey. Brett is an entrepreneur
from Victoria who has recently fallen in love with Holiday Trails (largely
in thanks to Velvet) and will be coming to assist with the maintenance
of the resort.

For the second consecutive year Bridgeview was flooded when the
Old Man River rose beyond its banks during heavy rainfall last year.
Unlike the flood of 2013, last season’s flood of the Bridgeview property
spanned several days. Unfortunately this resulted in much more silt
being left behind once the water receded. While we have worked very
hard to return Bridgeview to its pre-flood condition we appreciate the
patience shown by our members during this ongoing clean up.

service provider at Bridgeview
last season. Between the
more
reliable
internet
access and the addition of
third broadcast point in the
park we noticed a marked
improvement in the quality of
connection. Remember that
this is still a remote access
internet connection and
movie streaming and VOIP
services will quickly exhaust
available bandwidth when
using Tengo.
• We
are very excited to
announce that we will be
adding fire pits to select
sites throughout the resort.
Firewood will be available at
the Bridgeview store as will
hotdogs and smores supplies.
Country Maples RV Resort
Corrine LaJeunesse continues to run one of the most sought out
locations in the Holiday Trails system. This is largely due to her
enthusiasm and devotion to making Country Maples truly great. With
over a decade and a half of experience running this resort it is no
wonder she has such a great rapport with all guests and staff.

The Audio/visual aspect of our clubhouse got a substantial upgrade
last season with the addition of a new 60 inch flat screen TV and a
powerful sound system. Apparently the Canucks have never looked
better and the dances have been a hit.

We have continued with electrical upgrades in the park, installing
several new electrical pedestals over the winter. It is our intention to
continue with ongoing upgrades in 2015.

• The Tengo
internet Wi-Fi broadcast hardware will be getting an
upgrade for 2015 to improve signal quality throughout the resort. This
install is part of Holiday Trail’s ongoing commitment to provide quality
services to our guests in all locations.

Holiday Trails is excited to announce that we have recently been
approved for a membership sales licence by the state of Washington.
With this licence we are finally able to have a Membership consultant
on site at The Cedars. Long-time Cedars employee and newly minted
Holiday Trails Membership Consultant Sarah Ferguson will be manning
the Membership Consultants office for 2015.

Those that are on Facebook have likely seen posts about the outdoor
movie nights at Camperland last season. This new resort attraction has
proven to be so popular that we have decided to incorporate it into the
activities at Country Maples for 2015 also. Watch for the new outdoor 16
x 9 movie screen on weekends in 2015.
Cedars RV Resort
Rich and Kathy will be back at the helm of our US resort for their 7th
season at the Cedars. Their commitment to ensuring every guest is
“living the dream” is apparent with every visit and we are always excited
by their return from Arizona in the spring.
• Last season we
installed a dog run
at Dinosaur Trail RV Resort after the success and appreciation of these
amenities at our other locations. These
facilities have been greatly utilized and valued by our guests. Remember
when using these off leash areas, Holiday Trails supplies baggies for
cleaning up after your pooch. Please be sure to pick up after Fido so
everyone can enjoy this additional amenity.
•
We installed at chain link fence on a large portion of the riverside RV
sites to minimize the risks associated with the proximity of the Red Deer
River to Dinosaur Trail RV Resort. While this does limit physical access
from the park the chain link still allows for spectacular scenery with some
added peace of mind. We did include a gate in order to access to the river
for those that enjoy the riverside walk.
•
Like Country Maples, Dinosaur Trail will be hosting movies under the
stars for 2015. We have purchased a 16 x 9ft outdoor movie screen on
which will be showing family movies outside the club house on selected
clear nights this summer. Watch for updates on the events page of the
Holiday Trails website.
•
The Cedars hosted their second annual Classic car show last year
and plans are in place for this summer again. Some truly spectacular
rolling iron show up for these shows and they are always a hit. Watch
for updates in the Cedars Chatter and on the events page of the Holiday
Trails website.

We are currently exploring options to upgrade sites 1 – 10 from
unserviced sites to 30 amp power and water sites. Barring any unforeseen
circumstances we hope to have these improvements done early this
season.

management contract with the District of Hope. While Coquihalla Campground is not a Holiday Trails Resort, HTR members do receive 10% off

Camperland RV Resort
Home to Holiday Trails Head office and the largest location of the HTR
system, this very popular resort is managed under the watchful eye of
Kristina Barbon. Second only to Kevin and Donna themselves, Kristina
is the longest serving employee of Holiday Trails (selling firewood at 8
years old counts right?) and her dedication to making sure every guest
spends their entire stay at Camperland smiling is immediately apparent.
Axel and Brigitte Wiegreff will be managing the Country Kitchen at
Camperland again this upcoming season, bringing with them their
awesome menu for all to enjoy. Please watch for the menu specials and
hours of operation throughout the season. Welcome back!!
Host Parks
This season Holiday Trails RV Resorts continues our Host Park Agreements
with Alberta Beach and Seal Bay. As a Holiday Trails member you must
make an advanced reservation in order to both ensure a spot is available
to you and to ensure you will not incur nightly fees. Rules in these parks
may differ from those in HTR parks. Please make sure you are aware of
campground rules and are respectful of other guests.
Bridal Falls Water Park
Enjoy staying cool at the Bridal Falls Waterpark this summer! For those
that have loved the park before because of the family friendly atmosphere
you will be happy to hear of the upgrades added for the coming seasons.
The park continues to offer exciting features for the young in spirit and
at heart.

Events and Fun Weekends
The resort and vacation destination is about to enter its second year of
operation under the ownership of Kevin. The previous season was a success under the leadership of Mike Barker, whom I am confident you remember from his days working as VP of HTR.
Manning Park operates as a separate business from Holiday Trails RV
Resorts, similar to Bridal Falls Waterpark. Although there is no camping
available under the HTR system specifically, the resort can be enjoyed by
individuals as much as any of the beautiful provincial parks that are in
British Columbia. However akin to the previous year Kevin has arranged
some special deals for HTR members when wishing to use the facilities at
Manning such as the Lodge or Ski Resort. There is yet discussion on how
to incorporate the cabins at the resort into the HTR vacation package.
Attendance is on the rise from the numbers last year, despite the warm
winter and lack of snow at many local mountains. Manning Park is fortunate to receive its snow base from interior weather and has provided
for some outstanding skiing conditions since the middle of December.
The only thing better than spending a weekend at Holiday Trails Resorts
is spending a Special Event Theme weekend at Holiday Trails Resorts.
Here is a quick summary of upcoming events. Watch for event dates on
the Holiday Trails website.
Membership Appreciation Weekends Kevin Demers, President and Owner of Holiday Trails RV Resorts prides
himself on being available and accessible to all HTR members. As such
he began hosting annual meetings and BBQs at all HTR parks over 30
years ago and continuing today. Every year the boys from head office
visit each park to update guests on news and updates, grill some burgers
and maybe even join the crowd in a dance. Remember a Maximum 2
day reservation for Membership Appreciation weekends can be made in
addition to the two pending reservations allowed. Dates will be outlined
in this newsletter and online.
Canada Day and Independence Day –
Various events from face painting to parades make these long weekends
seem too short. Come show your national pride with us at all Holiday
Trails Resorts.
Sunday Sundaes –
Build your own ice cream sundae, toppings and sauces provided.
BINGO! –
No not the farmers dog but the long standing activity at most Holiday
Trails Resorts every weekend.
Movies Under the Stars –
Enjoy HD movies with surround sound the way the pioneers did, on a
blanket under the night sky. With the incredible popularity of this new
activity at Camperland, Holiday Trails has invested in two more outdoor
theatres for Country Maples and Dinosaur Trail.
Christmas in July –
Manning Park Resort
That’s not Grandpa in a house coat, it’s Santa Clause visiting this summer
to bring all the good girls and boys presents and sing Christmas Carols.
Make sure to take a stroll through the park and cast your vote for the best
decorated RV.
Bridal Falls Motel
HTR members receive a 10% discount on Bridal Falls Motel room rates.
Located only two minutes up the path from Camperland, this is a great
option for guests of HTR members with limited RV sleeping space. Motel
guests get access to all Camperland amenities during their stay. We would
like to thank Dave & Monica King, as this is their second year as the management team
at Bridal Falls
Motel.
Halloween in August –
Ghouls and Goblins (and more than a few Elsas) dress up in their most
creative costumes for trick or treating, site decorating, and kids craft
activities. One of our most popular theme weekends, be sure to book
early.
Classic Car Shows –
Our resorts continue be host to some amazing rolling iron during these
very fun activities every year. Be sure to check our website if you wish to
register your classic car for an upcoming show.
And so much more – Between bike rodeos, pet parades, dances, Frisbee
golf tournaments, craft fairs, canoe rides, pot lucks, coloring contests,
mini golf tournaments and more, there is always something unique and
memorable going on at Holiday Trails.

George’s Letter
It is quite interesting, the things we see and often don’t share
with one another while we are travelling and exploring in our RV’s.
There might be a little corner in a building that makes the best soup
you have ever tasted, yet it was found simply by trial and error.
Maybe you’ve stumbled across a nature setting that always has an
incredible collection of birds. I am going to talk about a few things
that I have enjoyed in my travels, some which have stolen my heart.
How many of you have been to Snoqualmie, Washington? There you
will find the Northwest Railway Museum. The entire town seems to
be volunteering to rebuild a complete railway line. They have rebuilt
a station from the past as well as several full train pieces. There are a
couple of huge steam locomotive train cars of the passenger variety,
and some of the diesel engines that first came into being around
1953-54. Also, there are the unique old snow plows that were used
in days gone by, so the trains could get through. During the summer
you might be fortunate enough to get a ride on Thomas the Train of
animated fame. Rides and tours are available during the summer
months. It is worth the stop -- that is for sure!
One of the side attractions for my wife and I as we travel, are the little
unadvertised small town hamburger stands. They often have the
tastiest milkshakes around! Two that come to mind as our favourites
along Hwy #1 are in Virden, Manitoba and in the isolated low prairie
stretch in Saskatchewan. They are worth the stop every time.
I like to leave the main highways when I travel. One of the fun
reasons for driving on side roads or taking a not-so-familiar route, is
the possibility of finding vintage automobiles! When I was staying
at Tall Chief RV Park in Tall Chief City, Washington, (while working the
September RV Show), I spied a 1953 Chevy Bel Air. I stopped, got out
and looked at it each evening after the show. I was very tempted
to make the call to the phone number in the
window, as it was for sale. (See the included
photo.) Of course I told my wife, Daye, about it,
and she was quite disappointed that we were
NOT the proud owners of this ‘53 Chev. Daye
would love to attend car shows as an exhibitor
of her own vehicle and wants to be the proud
owner of something from the fifties one day.
She currently accompanies me to shows with
my Studebaker Avanti. Daye and I travelled to
Palm Springs a couple of years ago, and were
heading past Stockton, California early one
morning with Denny’s on our minds. Suddenly, there they were, on
my left hand side - - - a graveyard of Buicks, which all seemed to be
from ‘54 – ‘57. I wanted to stop in the worst way, but not as much as
I wanted to enjoy that Denny’s Grand Slam breakfast. We made the
commitment to stop and browse around these vehicles on our way
home. I learned how to drive using a 1955 Buick with no-power
steering, and I loved driving that car. That visit back is still on our
bucket list.
Now, for the airplane enthusiasts, you have to make the stop at the
Tillamook Air Museum in Oregon. You will see some remarkable
aircraft in the hangers. Most of us will only remember them from
various war films from years gone by, but they are pretty spectacular.
If I recall, there is a Grumman Tomcat as seen in the movie Top Gun,
a Douglas Skyhawk, and there are pieces of the German airship,
the Hindenburg. Also, in nearby McMinnville at the Evergreen
Aviation & Space Museum, you can see the Spruce Goose (Hughes
H-4 Hercules) which was formerly in California for a long time. While
in this area of Oregon, you must visit the Tillamook Cheese Factory.
Since you really are in wine country while you are here, you might as
well purchase a tasty cheese to pair up with some spectacular pinot
noir. One of our favourite wineries is Argyle Wines of Oregon. Take
the time to drop in and taste their reds or whites, depending on your
preference, and learn about their different quality levels.
Back in B.C., the railway museum in Squamish is a must see. For those
of you who have forgotten about the Royal Hudson, this is where you
will find her. During a tour of the spectacular round house, you just
might find wonderful hard-working volunteers restoring yet another
piece of equipment. There are a couple of model train set-ups in the
round house that will have you watching for quite some time. In one
display, numerous trains operate at the same time including both
HO and O scale. One of the model train set-ups is actually from the
Army and Navy store, so it might bring back a memory for you when
you see it. Just a note. . . the model train collection-of-collections
was owned by Frank Sinatra and it is still up and running to this day
in his home in Palm Springs. It is currently owned by Jimmy Pattison.
The trains have been collected from all over the world and are set up
in a tremendous operating display with conductor! I had the great
privilege of working the trains with the conductor! Who would
have ever thought that Frank was a fan of model trains? And who
would have ever thought that Frank and I would have two things in
common: model trains and Jack Daniels!
While writing about unique things to see and do while RV travelling,
I would like to mention the Woodinville Veterans’ Cemetery near
Ferndale Washington. Numerous grave stones are annually cleaned,
with a flag placed at each of their sites. I have
had the opportunity to know the man who
does this for some years now. During the
spring prior to Memorial Day, this person
takes a pail and scrub brush, and goes to
this and a couple of other cemeteries in
order to make sure no veterans’ graves are
left uncared for. He seeks out those veterans
of years gone by so that none is forgotten. I
know he does the cemetery on Lummi Island,
as well as the one between Birch Bay and
Blaine. . . . taking care of the forgotten. At
the Woodinville Cemetery on Memorial Day, the entire grounds and
roadways are decorated with large American flags by the community.
It is a breathtaking sight. It certainly makes you appreciate those
who have given up their lives, so that we may continue to enjoy life.
We see some amazing and fun things while we explore in our RV’s.
Seeking out locations recommended by other fellow RV’ers is one of
the pleasures of travelling. Perhaps it would be worthwhile for us at
HTR to set up a section on our web page for postings of wonderful
or unique things to make a point of seeing in our travels. In the
meantime, I hope your journeys take you past some of the places I
have mentioned and enjoyed.
