Keep a current Four-Year-Plan throughout high school; there’s a free template for that on our website. 2. Keep it professional When preparing the transcript, keep it professional by using a program such as Excel or Word. The transcript you issue your home school graduate is a direct reflection of your school and might ultimately affect someone’s opinion of home schooling in general! 3. Add Personalization Design the top portion of the transcript like letterhead for your school. Keep the design simple and professional. I like to add fun details like school colors, school logo or mascot, etc. 4. The Essentials Include your school’s name, address, and your contact phone number. That’s likely your home address and your cell phone number! 5. Important Dates Include the student’s name, address, birthdate, and date of graduation. You might choose to include additional information such as parents’ names, social security number, etc., but those are definitely optional. For the graduation date, go ahead and give the month, date, and year as opposed to simply the year – some organizations require it. 6. Categories You may choose to show your student’s courses by category or by grade. This is usually just a personal preference. portion of the transcript. This would include volunteer related awards, academic achievements, Honor Society, scholarships, leadership positions, and awards for various extra-curricular activities such as debate, speech, mock trial, sports, music, etc. 10. Testing scores Provide scores for standardized tests such as AP, SAT, SAT Subject Tests, etc. Include the test date. 11. Signature If you choose by grade then you would have a 9th grade section, a 10th grade section, etc. If you choose by category then you would have a Mathematics section, a Sciences section, a Social Sciences/History section, etc. Provide a place for your signature and date. You can purchase a custom embosser to emboss official copies of the transcript, and, while it might lend some “validity” to a home school transcript, you would probably choose to do this only if requested to do so by the school or organization to which you are submitting the transcript. 7. Course Descriptions 12. Sealed Envelope For each course, give the course title, the grade, and the number of credits earned. The grade is usually determined by your student’s coursework. If a class has been taught (and a grade issued) by a professional instructor, consider indicating that with an asterisk and a comment below. Official transcripts are generally placed in a sealed envelope with a signature along the seal, and delivered to the school or organization requesting it. 8. Student’s GPA Include your student’s GPA. There are several online GPA calculators you may use to arrive at the correct GPA. You will need to enter their grade and if the course was a regular, honors, or college course. If your student passed a college-level exam (such as CLEP or DSST) you can give them an A for that course on their high school transcript and select “college” for the weight of the course in a GPA calculator. 9. The Extras Showcase your student’s achievements, honors, awards, volunteer work, etc., in the lower 13. Know your state Be very familiar with your particular state’s home school laws and requirements. Number of credits required for graduation, course requirements to earn a half credit or full credit, etc., can vary from state to state. An excellent resource for state requirements is www.hslda.org. 14. Helps There are several companies that will prepare a transcript for you for a fee. Some will even store the data for you for a fee, and then charge an additional fee if you want a printed copy. However, you still need to provide them with all of the information! This FREE Excel template is all you need to compile an official, professional transcript.
