SAP ARENA
MANNHEIM
Just in time for the beginning of the season in August 2014
the SAP Arena presented the results of the successfully
completed reconstruction works that were carried out during the summer break:
Together with S[quadrat] the SAP Arena realized Europe’s
most comprehensive LED construction consisting of a LED
video cube and bottom ring with Nichia black face LEDs as
well as a top ring and fascia board with Nichia LEDs. For
the new, bigger video cube the client waived the usual side
shields to achieve an airy look. Despite the extension with
the bottom ring, the new LED solution with a total weight
of 13 tons is even lighter than its predecessor thanks to
the lightweight construction. The greatest sensation of the
modernization is the two-sided, elliptical top ring. With
this unique shape S[quadrat]’s engineers could set new
benchmarks one more time. The 265 m long fascia board
above the upper box levels rounds off the work of art. A
total of 7,319,296 pixels now provide optimal image quality
at all levels of the SAP Arena.
The biggest challenges of this magnificent project were
the tight schedule, which did not allow any delay because of upcoming events, and of course the complexity of
the project, particularly the perfect planning of the many
individual LED systems which had to be installed contemporaneously and coordinated with each other.

However, before S[quadrat]’s assembly team could start
the realization of the modern LED systems, it had demounted the existing LED video cube and the outdated fascia
board completely and intact into their component parts.
New movable chain hoists now hold the new video cube
and the underneath mounted LED ring. To fix the new elliptical LED ring at the roof construction S[quadrat] GmbH
attached a total of 12 BGV-C1 chain hoists which are moveable up to 30 cm under the roof.
The new fascia board already captivates by its highly increased resolution due to the upgrade from 22 mm pixel
pitch to only 10 mm. Additionally, its structural depth is
now only 21 cm, maintenance can be done easily from
above and an attractive aluminum cladding on top and
below the display modules saves the fascia display from
vandalism and splashing water.
Comprehensive protection for all LED displays and a continuous reliable operation can be achieved by S[quadrat]’s
unique monitoring system SX [TempControl]. Temperature
sensors monitor the display housings of the four LED systems and react as soon as the temperature is beyond the
normal range that can be defined individually. The control
room will be informed immediately and the concerned LED
system can be disconnected full-automatically.
One crew member of the SAP arena is a separate LED
operator and feeds the LED systems with the desired information. S[quadrat] has delivered a complete content
management solution to support him. The former content
hard- and software by Clickeffects was adjusted to the
new systems and the higher resolutions. In addition, the
scoring system SX [SportBox] enables to show all match
information for the sports ice-hockey, handball, basketball
(FIBA), tennis, boxing and more.
Besides the LED systems in the event hall S[quadrat]
GmbH was also commissioned with the medialization of
the VIP entrance area. The display expert installed a 3 x 7
seamless LCD wall (21 K resolution) consisting of seamless displays of NEC including the controlling via a picturall octo broadcast media server.

What would you like today? Where shall your message land right now and to whom is it directed? Who
wants to present news, report about a little revolution, relocate, terminate, marry, like to thank or break
up with someone in a serious and efficient manner
( but does not have George Clooney’s phone number
ready), is always searching for successful formats
that achieve special attention. Big Block Media from
Rostock, Germany provides THE new medium: different from television, more colourful than radio, louder
than print media, more favourable than Hollywood.
And with an area of 25 m² it is by no means being
overlooked. This technically innovative solution is:
LED wall. Since March 2014 you can find the largest
LED video display system in the North of Germany in
Rostock.
Two of these large video walls are located at the road
L 22, with more than 50,000 cars per day one of the
busiest roads of the federal state – and thus an ideal
place for your advertisement.
The position of the boards is perfectly chosen in a
500 m long low-traffic zone, so that the displayed
images and commercials are seen by numerous eyes.
Furthermore, the boards point into both driving di-

rections and can be played independently from each
other. Each 25 m² LED display area is equipped with
high-quality image and colour reproduction in a ratio
of 16:10, perfect for animated images, live streams,
motif changes and video sequences.
Only competitors pass by with bowed heads. Whoever
passes this busy location in the morning on the way
to work or in the evening on the way home, visitors
of the Hanse Sail, fair visitors or Rostock tourists,
can see your name, your advertisement and a popular
format for events and presentations, products placements or price campaigns, image advertising and
target group marketing.
Moreover, our Hanseboards are considerably less expensive than Hollywood or a TV commercial before
the evening news: with a budget from 16 Euros per
day you are on air. You can use Big Block Media’s
high-flexible and super-fast reaction speed: within
a time period of only two hours beginning with the
receipt of the order we can place the desired advertisement – with several repetitions on either one day
or over a longer period. Is it the right time to finally
break up? Yes, with limits – but better not with your
partner…

The Importance of EMC Design in LED Displays
EMC compliance (IEC60950,
EN55022) is not only a required
feature for market entry but is
becoming a design target in the
development process of new LED
displays. With pricing of LED
systems going down, and sizes
and pixel count of LED screens becoming higher, the
color depth and refresh rates are going up. This result in current LED switching speeds of 25 MHz and
beyond. These market requirements make it more
and more difficult to keep radio frequency emissions below the limits of the standards for EMC.
chamber at a certified lab (like LGA Nuremberg,
Germany and Hummel Electronics, Fellbach,
Germany) but also by performing field measurements for entire display systems. Let us take
our installation in Audi-Sportpark (Ingolstadt,
Germany) as an example. Our EMC partner Hummel Electronics has set up the emission measurement according to EN55022 on each of the
two 35m² SO [10/20] NT displays. Both displays are measured to be EN55022-compliant.
As a matter of course S[quadrat] not only follows emission requirements but also comply with
irradiation and conducted emission requirements.
When analyzing the existing LED solutions in the
market several years ago, there have been various
approaches to prevent EMC radiation by extensive
use of shielding techniques. This is becoming insufficient anymore. Investing large design resources
and material in shielding con-struction to prevent
radiation from components and electronic devices
is not the solution. Putting our design resources
into avoiding radiation at the source is Squadrat’s
strategy and vision. Results of our R&D confirm this
vision.
With our EMC improvements „by design“
we benefit from higher system stability, as
emissions not only interfere with external
services (security, ATC, mobile, radio, TV)
but also inside large systems like LED walls.
Another positive factor of our approach is
reduced requirement for cabinet as a HF
device (ie. proper shielding) and improved power
efficiency.
From the S[quadrat] SX [Master] control system and it‘s subsystems down to the LED driver
are designed to minimize any possible source
of radiation and fulfill EMC requirement like
EN55022. This is not only approved by measuring single LED cabinets inside a EMC measuring
