A message to our community
Karen McGrath, President and CEO,
Georgian Bay General Hospital
G
eorgian Bay General Hospital once again took centre stage in our community in 2015;
the story revolved around the exceptional care provided by our frontline staff and physi-
cians and the overall dedication of the more than 600 staff members and more than 200
volunteers who make this hospital a vital part of our community.
We are all very much aware of the financial challenges faced by our hospital throughout the
past four years and last year our hospital and our community was confronted with yet another
funding crisis that threatens clinical services at our hospital.
And while we have struggled with those challenges we never lost sight of the reason we
are here; to serve the health care needs of our community.
Over the past year our staff saved more lives, comforted more families and worked harder
to improve how we deliver health care services every day.
Ralph Befort, Board Chair,
Georgian Bay General Hospital
We underwent an incredibly successful Accreditation review that left us proud of what we
do; the Accreditation Canada team of surveyors had wonderful things to say about our care,
our innovative thinking and the improvements we have made over the last four years.
What we do here at Georgian Bay General Hospital relies in large part on the support of
our community. A community hospital can only succeed when the community is behind it and
that commitment to GBGH is more evident every day in North Simcoe.
Hospitals play a vital role in the communities they serve and, in turn, the community plays
a vital role in helping the hospital keep pace with the ever-changing health-care technology.
One of the avenues GBGH uses to connect with the community is through the GBGH Foundation. The Foundation brings together the donors who provide the much-needed funds that
make it possible for GBGH to provide our health-care professionals with the tools they need
Karen Roberts, President,
Georgian Bay General Hospital
Volunteer Association
to do their jobs – providing the best care possible.
Funding from the province does not include money to purchase capital equipment, which
means GBGH must rely on community support to acquire those tools.
Last year, the foundation raised nearly $1.5 million to help the hospital meet patient
needs.
Everyone at your hospital knows the difference your gifts make. Thank you to everyone who
supported us this year – by making a donation, volunteering, hosting or attending one of our
events. We can’t do what we do without you!

eorgian Bay General Hospital (GBGH) achieved 98%
of Accreditation Canada’s standards for excellence
and has been awarded a four-year Accreditation
certificate. Of the 2,015 applicable standards tested by
Accreditation Canada during their visit to the hospital in
December 2015, 1,970 were met!
Accreditation is the voluntary process by which hospitals
evaluate their performance against national standards. The
external peer review provides assessment and improvement
opportunities based on standards of excellence.
“I am very proud of the team here at GBGH,” President and
CEO Karen McGrath said. “In eight dimensions of quality we
met 98% of the standards we were measured against, and
I believe this accreditation proved we are going in the right
direction.”
The accreditation process began with self-assessment
on-line surveys, involving staff, board members and focus
groups over many months. A four-member team of health
care professionals (the surveyors) visited the hospital during
the first week of December to complete a hands-on review.
They looked at all aspects of the organization, reviewing
documents, interviewing teams representing leadership,
support and patient services, touring the facilities and holding
focus groups and impromptu conversations with patients,
staff, board members and community partners.
In the end, they agreed that GBGH has many strengths
including staff commitment, strong commitment to
improvement and the transformation journey, quality
communication both internally and externally, and a true
understanding of the patients the hospital serves.
The surveyors made special mention of the housekeeping
team for the safe and clean environment at GBGH and the
volunteers for being the frontline warriors of a very robust
hand hygiene program.
They also commended the organization for the successful
introduction of the Aboriginal Patient Navigator, the selftriage system in the emergency department, the antibiotic
stewardship program and a patient passport tool introduced
in the hospital’s active rehabilitation program.
“I am very proud of the team here at GBGH. In eight dimensions of
quality we met 98% of the standards we were measured against, and I believe
this accreditation proved we are going in the right direction.

Georgian Bay General Hospital
Fundraising
F
undraising for your local community hospital can be FUN! Just ask anyone who
has participated in the South East Georgian
Bay (SEGBAY) Chamber of Commerce Golf
Tournament.
Upon discovering that provincial funding
in Ontario doesn’t pay for a single piece
of equipment for their local hospital, the
SEGBAY Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with Larche Communications (parent
company of local radio stations KICX 106
and 104.1 The Dock), voted unanimously to
support Georgian Bay General Hospital with
an annual golf tournament.
“The golf tournament idea for the hospital came about after SEGBAY President
Paul Herriott and I attended a ‘Breakfast
of Champions’ session at GBGH,” said
Fred Wareing, another SEGBAY member
and tournament chair. “There we learned
that all hospitals have to raise money for
equipment and upgrades; that the government did not provide that funding. This was
a surprise to us.”
Two years in, the tournament has already
raised $62,000 for a state-of-the-art treat-
ment room in the Emergency Department at
GBGH, along with two hospitals beds. The
volunteer committee hopes that this year’s
tournament, on August 9th at Bonaire Golf
Course, will raise another $30,000.
“Quick access to medical help is of primary importance to all our members. The
hospital is also a key source of good paying
jobs for our community. This attracts skilled
people to the community which in turn leads
to more local spending which then attracts
more businesses to the community. So as
well as providing needed medical help to
our citizens, the hospital also strongly assists in creating a healthy economic environment,” added Wareing.
The SEGBAY Chamber of Commerce
represents businesses in Severn, Tay and
Georgian Bay Township. For more details
on how you can organize an event in support of GBGH, please visit www.526give.

N
early two years after the celebration
to mark the opening of phase one of
the new Emergency Department project
at Georgian Bay General Hospital, the
final phases of the project are about to
begin.
The hospital has begun the process
of pre-qualifying prospective contractors
in anticipation of the next stages of
construction. Phases two and three
will see the construction of a four-bay
ambulance garage as well as a retrofit
to bring the old spaces into alignment
with the new. Pre-qualifying is the step
taken before the project goes to RFP,
after which construction is expected to
begin sometime this summer and be
complete in 18-24 months.
For the past two years the hospital
has been working on the plans and
schematic block drawings to seek
approval from the Ministry of Health
and Long Term Care to proceed to the
construction phase, which was granted
earlier this year. The total cost for
these next phases is $9.1-million.
Our
Emergency
Department
Revitalization has been a wonderful
example of community support. Phase
one – a 6,000-square-foot addition –
was opened in June of 2014 at a cost
of $5-million, which was funded entirely
by the community.
While the province has committed
more than $8-million toward phases
two and three, our community has once
again supported in earnest, raising
an additional $2.1-million for capital
expenses and the equipment your
physicians and nurses need to provide
you with the best care.
When complete, the department will
have grown from 10,000 square feet
to nearly 17,000 square feet and will
include new trauma rooms, treatment
rooms, ambulance garage, secure
areas and waiting rooms, at a total cost
of $14.1-million.

tHE ELECtROniC HEaLtH RECORD
oUr vISIon to provIde eXceptIonal care contInUeS...
T
he Electronic Health Record has
changed the pace of healthcare; soon
your physicians at GBGH will be accessing,
reviewing, communicating, making diagnosis and treatment plans quicker thanks to
a new software addition.
Our vision is to optimize our health re-
cord system so that physicians are able
to enter their orders, document notes, receive alerts and notifications about their
patients, and share the information with
other clinicians. This will ensure more accurate entry of information along with more
timely delivery of diagnosis and treatment
for patients in our care, assisting us in our
vision to provide exceptional care, every
person, every time.
The software that provides this
leap forward in electronic health
care is called the
Physician
Care
Manager. This critical software, along
with all the equipment at Georgian
Bay General Hospital, is not funded
by the government and therefore must be
purchased with funds donated by our community.
In April 2015, the Foundation Cornerstone Partners took on the challenge of
raising $651,078 to purchase the Physician Care Manager for GBGH! This wonderful group of 66 community members
recognized the value this program brings
to patients at GBGH and has jointly
pledged more than $115,000 annually.
Their funds support the equipment needs
at GBGH, through individual contributions
of $500, $1,000 or $2,500 each year on
an annual basis.
If you would like to learn more about becoming a Cornerstone Partner and supporting the Electronic Health Record, please
contact Shelly Price in the GBGH Foundation Office at 705-526-GIVE (4483).

experience to a whole new level!”
T
he ‘Gift Shop’ underwent an extensive renovation and revitalization for
the first time in almost 20 years. Over
a two month period, everything from the
counters to the shelves and even the
walls changed. This has turned it into
a real drawing card, even for those who
have no other reason to visit the hospital.
The Gift Shop now carries home and
fashion accessories, a large selection
of bags and purses, clothing for women,
sleepwear for men and women, an extensive selection of jewelry and handmade clothing for the American Girl doll.
You can also find handmade baby quilts,
sweaters and hats and keepsakes for
baby. As always, everything you buy is
tax free!
Most importantly, every purchase you
make helps to support your hospital.
The Shop is run by volunteers, and all

E
very journey has a destination, and
in active rehabilitation that destination is usually home.
The roadmap for this journey at Georgian Bay General Hospital is called the
Patient Passport.
Developed by the Therapy Team at
GBGH, the patient passport is a communication tool between the Care Team,
Patient and their support network. This
unique booklet provides the patient and
their support network (family, friends)
with information about the Care Team
and contact information, plus outlines
the patient’s current level of functionality, their goals for discharge and the
recommendations of the Care Team.
In essence, it provides the patient
with all the information they need to
understand and take part in their own
active rehabilitation!
The passport also provides the patient and support network with details
of their responsibilities for arranging
equipment and services for discharge
and explains what the Care Team is
able to provide or refer them to.
How does it work?
The Patient and their family meet
with each of the disciplines involved in
their care: Physiotherapy, Occupational
Therapy, Speech Language Pathology,

Recreation Therapy, Nursing and Social
Work. The Patient keeps the completed
passport as a record of their meetings
and a list of recommendations from
each therapist of the things they need
for a successful discharge.
Congratulations to the Therapy Team
at GBGH for their wonderful team work
and innovation! During the visit by Accreditation Canada in 2015, surveyors
were very impressed with the Patient
Passport. In addition, the Therapy Team
was the recipient of a Board Award of
Excellence for the innovation.
Thank You
for Answering
the Call!
A
nurse call system is a communication lifeline for patients! Hundreds
of times each day, patients use a call
system to ask nurses questions, alert
them to a problem or to request help
getting out of bed.
In 2015, the 40-year-old call system
on 2 North began to work intermittently,
and it became a risk the hospital needed
to address immediately. Because there
is absolutely no government funding for
equipment in hospitals, the Foundation
partnered with the nurses on the unit to
send out a letter to the community asking for their help.
Your respnse was wonderful! 356
members of your community responded
with donations, totaling $38,305 toward the new system. In addition, the
staff at GBGH pledged their own Staff
Giving Circle donations, contributing an
additional $3,130 and bringing the total
raised to $41,435.
Thanks to all of your support, a new
and improved nurse call system is in
now place and is having a positive im-
pact on patient care. Additional units
were installed in the shower and tub
rooms, and the negative pressure isolation room to allow nurses to talk to their
patients in these areas. There are also
satellite units in the halls that allow
nursing staff to respond to calls from
anywhere on the floor, and the updated
command centre is more efficient and
user-friendly.
Proof that when hospital staff, community members and the Foundation

THE gbghgala…
10 Years in the Making
“It’s all about the team”
– Mary Jane Brooks, founding Gala
Committee member.
I
n 2006, a team of community supporters launched the first Hospital Gala
‘Moonlight on Georgian Bay’ at The Inn
at Bay Moorings, raising $45,000 for
the Huronia District Hospital. The Gala
featured eight chef stations, four entertainers and silent and live auctions
with Wayne Middaugh as the Master of
Ceremonies.
“We were inspired by the Front Line
Cancer Foundation’s Titz’n Glitz event
we attended in Collingwood,” said Lyn
Wolfhard, one of the members of the
founding committee.
“We actually pulled it off,” said
Mary Jane Brooks, another member.
“I wanted to serve my community and
supporting the hospital was a good way
to do it.”
Over the next seven years, Lyn and
Mary Jane (fondly referred to as the
Gala Girls) worked with teams of
volunteers to make the Gala bigger
and better. They dazzled guests with
themes ranging from Hollywood Nights
to Disco Fever, attracting more chefs,
entertainers and guests.
“It’s all about the team,” said Brooks,
mentioning that the event is such a
success thanks to the many dedicated
volunteers who help out each year.
In 2012, the Gala Girls invited Jaime
Crouch of Splash Events to take the
Gala to new creative heights as the
event found its new home at the
Midland Cultural Centre. Under his
creative direction, guests have visited
Paris, New York, Rio and even traveled
Around the World to celebrate the 10th
Anniversary in 2015. To date, the
GBGH Gala has raised an incredible
$671,644 for the hospital!
The 11th Annual GBGH Gala, ‘Las
Vegas, Baby!’ will take place at the MCC
on Saturday, October 15, 2016. Tickets
are $140 each and can be purchased
through the MCC, at Rub of the
Green, Splash Events or by calling the
Foundation at 705-526-GIVE (4483).

Celebrating
15 Years of
Celebrity Golf!
W
hen Wayne and Sherry Middaugh
ran their first Celebrity Golf
Tournament in 2001, they had no
idea it would become one of the most
successful golf fundraisers in Simcoe
County!
With the help of dedicated
volunteers, dozens of celebrities and
hundreds of golfers, Wayne and Sherry
organized their incredible tournament
for 15 years in support of Georgian Bay
General Hospital.
Each year, participants enjoyed a day
of golfing, cocktails, dinner and auction
followed by live entertainment. Year
after year, interest in the tournament
grew, bringing more sponsorship dollars,
more exciting auction items and raising
more money for the hospital. In 2015,
the final year for the tournament, a
record $126,174 was raised, thanks to
a special $50,000 gift from the Sandra
Schmirler Foundation and an incredible
live auction.
Thanks to their amazing efforts to
make their event bigger and better
each year, Wayne and Sherry made the
Middaugh Celebrity Golf Tournament
an incredible success, with a total of
$515,862 donated to Georgian Bay
General Hospital! Over the years, the
tournament has helped to purchase
infant incubators, hospital beds, vital
signs monitors, a wireless network
and more. These are wonderful gifts
that will continue to benefit our whole
community for years to come.
On behalf of everyone at Georgian
Bay General Hospital, we want to thank
Wayne & Sherry Middaugh, and their
amazing volunteer committee, for their
incredible generosity over the years!

110tH Anniversary
georgian BaY general hospital
Volunteer assoCiation
O
ne hundred and ten years
ago, a small group of dedicated women met to discuss
how they could help their
hospital, then known as
Midland
Penetanguishene General and Marine
Hospital. Four buildings
and five name changes
later, that small group
has grown to more
than 200 women and
men who continue to
volunteer and keep
the vision and mission at Georgian Bay
General Hospital very
much alive and active.
Volunteers
contribute an average
of 35,000 hours of
service every year in
virtually every area of
the hospital! You’ll find
them in the Emergency
Department, Ambulatory
Care, Diagnostic Imaging,
Surgical Day Care, Patient
Happy Anniversary
Units, the Information Desks, Health
Records, Patients in Motion and Pharmacy. They also provide assistance to
the nurse practitioner and in the medical library.
If you’ve ever been to the hospital
as a patient or visitor, you have been
helped by the volunteers.
Fundraising is a large part of what
they do — and they do it well! Since
1998, when the record keeping started
through the Foundation, the Volunteer
Association has given $1,318,175.80
to the hospital for equipment and capital projects.
In addition to bake and craft sales,
raffles, tag days, geranium sales and
butter tarts, the volunteers also operate the very successful Gift Shop and
the Coffee Bar and Lottery. These
operations alone generate more than
$60,000 a year! For shoppers, buying
from the gift shop and coffee bar is a
real win-win – an opportunity to support
your hospital without paying taxes!
What began as a group of women
mending sheets has grown into a very
successful community resource.

MaRCH MUDnESS
raISeS $40,000 For ct Scanner!
T
alk about bringing an idea to life!
In October 2015, Penetanguishene
Mayor Gerry Marshall had a vision of
bringing his community together to raise
funds for their hospital by completing a
five kilometer mud run.
On March 20, 2016, more than 170
participants converged on Rotary Champlain Wendat Park in Penetanguishene
to bring Gerry’s vision to life. The first
annual March MUDness was born!
Participants braved the chilly weather
in their colorful team t-shirts, sporting
names such as “Cirque du Sore Legs”,
“50 shades of Tay” and “I Can’t Believe
it’s not Mudder”. With incredible enthusiasm and energy, participants climbed
an enormous snow pile, jumped over
hay bales and tires, pulled fire hoses

and crawled through culverts to complete the course.
From sponsorships and participant
pledges, an incredible $40,000 was
donated to the CT Scanner for Georgian
Bay General Hospital! Special thanks to
Tay Township Mayor Scott Warnock, who
brought in the most individual pledges
at $1,750, and kudos to GBGH Team
“Dirty Rekords” who brought in $2,856
for the highest team total.
This inaugural event was an incredible success as our communities came
together to support our hospital. Staff
at the Town of Penetanguishene worked
tirelessly to organize and promote the
event, while title sponsors Magna, ALC
and Geranium supported the event with
great generosity, and the participants
from across North Simcoe raised thousands of dollars and their enthusiasm
was phenomenal.

N
ot everyone who comes to Georgian Bay General Hospital (GBGH)
has a permanent home in our community. Each year, seasonal residents,
boaters and visitors to our region account for more than 4,500 visits to our
Emergency Department.
Judy Kaufman is a longtime Georgian
Bay boater, who considers Midland her
home away from home. In 2014, following surgery in her home community,
Judy and her husband were relaxing
on their boat when she began to feel
she was choking. Not the coughing
kind, but she suddenly found that she
couldn’t swallow and was having trouble breathing. Thankfully, they were
docked at the marina, and were able
“I’m so grateful
to get quickly to the Emergency Department at GBGH.
Judy was quickly diagnosed and
rushed into emergency surgery. A
nurse ran to the parking lot to call the
Anesthesiologist back to the Operating Room. Surgery was done to clear
the blockage and repair the damage
caused by the aforementioned surgery.
Within a few hours, Judy was back on
the boat and on the road to recovery.
“I’m so grateful to the staff at Georgian Bay General Hospital,” says Judy.
“I might not be here today if it weren’t
for their quick action.”

ers for Best Care program in 2015, to
provide boaters in our area the opportunity to support their hospital away from
home. Together, marinas and boaters
donated $18,525 toward the purchase
of a new CT Scanner at GBGH.
There are a number of ways to get
involved in 2016. Boaters can participate in a raffle for some incredible
boating prizes (full list at www.526give.

fun as marinas across the region host
fundraisers in support of Georgian Bay

When you are ready to redecorate your home or that special piece of furniture we can take care of everything from the inside to the outside!
Our promise is Quality Products, Professional Advice, a team that loves their customers and of course,
peanuts in the shell roasted in sea salt! Let us help do it your way.
RevIval FuRnItuRe
We hunt down and pick incredible older furniture pieces and clean/
repair/paint and resell them.
We also teach our DIY customers how to do it themselves in our
Revival Furniture classes. Check out our facebook page for dates and
subjects. We feature Cottage Paints as well as Benjamin Moore paints
for furniture along with an array of techniques for shading, highlighting,
crackling and more.
