SOCIAL PURCHASING PORTAL (SPP)
The SPP is a business-to-business connecting tool. It exists to help
direct existing business purchases to local businesses and social
enterprises which hire those who face barriers to employment. This
purchasing will result in economic and employment opportunities in
the inner-city and increased employment opportunities for the
chronically unemployed.
STAR BLANKET INITIATIVE
LITE is a Public Foundation with a simple mission: To
alleviate poverty in Winnipeg by supporting businesses
and organizations that build capacity and provide jobs to
people who face barriers to employment.
Annually LITE purchases hand crafted, inner-city produced, Star
Blankets and donates them to community organizations so that they
can use them in their own fundraising and capacity building initiatives
to reduce poverty in Winnipeg. Last year, 12 blankets were purchased
from 2 partners, helping to support 8 employee positions.
LITE relies on donations in order to support long term solutions to
poverty, unemployment, hunger, and homelessness in the inner-city.
Our belief is that employment empowers people and helps to break
the cycle of poverty and hopelessness - the result is a healthier, more
prosperous community for all.
LITE – Local Investment Toward Employment has 4 main programs:
COMMUNITY ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT (CED) GRANTS
In 2013-2014 LITE gave out 8 grants to community organizations
throughout Winnipeg’s inner city. In total $40,954 was disbursed,
generating 175 employment opportunities for inner city residents.
The programs that these grants fund aim to provide individuals living
in the inner city with jobs and training opportunities. These
opportunities vary from short term employment experiences with a
focus on building confidence and self-worth, to longer term
experiences that aim to get individuals work ready and into
permanent jobs.
ALTERNATIVE CHRISTMAS HAMPER CAMPAIGN
LITE runs an annual Christmas Hamper Campaign that focuses on
creating and supporting inner-city jobs while providing food to those
in need around the holiday season. In 2013-2014 LITE purchased over
$40,000 in food from inner city businesses in order to support 125
inner city jobs for people who face barriers to employment. We also
partner with catering organizations who offer training and skills
building programs that lead to employment. The groceries and baked
goods that are purchased are then donated to hamper programs
Project Echo (Sam’s Christmas) and the Christmas Cheer Board for
distribution to over 1,600 Winnipeg residents in need over the
holiday season.
