Oklahoma Highway Patrol Report
“Click It or Ticket”
Law enforcement agencies
across the state will be taking
part in the annual “Click It or
Ticket” mobilization May 19
through June 1, cracking down
on drivers and passengers who
are not buckled up according
to state law.
“Those who choose not to
wear a seat belt will feel the
heat during this campaign,”
said OHP Lt. Troy German,
statewide occupant protection
coordinator. “Motorists should
buckle up every time they go
out, both day and night – no
warnings and no excuses.”
Oklahoma law requires
drivers and front seat
passengers age 13 and over
to have a safety belt properly
fastened at all times the vehicle
is being operated. Children age
12 and younger are required to
be properly restrained in the
appropriate car seat, booster
seat or seat belt, according to
the child’s age and weight.
“We can’t make the decision
to buckle up for you, and we
hope it won’t take getting a
ticket to help you remember to
fasten that seat belt or buckle
your child correctly,” German
said. “Unless you want to risk
a ticket – or, even worse, your
life – you must buckle up.”
According to the National
Highway
Transportation
Administration, seat belts save
about 13,000 lives each year.
The nationwide campaign
runs through the Memorial
Day holiday weekend, when
numerous motorists are on the
roads.
Drug Arrest
Clinton Samuel Michalk, 39,
Tishomingo, was arrested April
29 by trooper Heath Davidson
after Davidson observed a
motorcycle weaving from the
centerline to the white fog
line as it traveled east on Ohio
Street in Coalgate. The driver
kept rubbing several areas of
his body while driving with
one hand and was having
problems controlling the Harley
Davidson, the trooper states in
his probable cause affidavit.
After stopping the cycle,
Davidson noticed that Michalk
was having uncontrollable
body tremors and exaggerated
reflexes. Michalk admitted
to using methamphetamine
the previous night and said
he was sleepy, the affidavit
states. A baggy containing
approximately 2 grams of
crystal substance was found
in Michalk’s shirt pocket. The
substance field tested positive
for methamphetamine.
Michalk was arrested and
transported to the Coal County
jail. Davidson was assisted
at the scene by trooper Mark
Benedict.
On May 1, Michalk pleaded
not guilty to felony driving
a motor vehicle while under
the influence of drugs 2nd and
subsequent and possession
of
controlled
dangerous
substance.
Michalk waived a May
8 preliminary hearing and
was bound over for trial.
He is scheduled for formal
arraignment on May 15.
Public Intoxication and
Obstructing an Officer
Joseph A. Smallwood, 53,
Antlers, OK, was arrested by
trooper John Fugate the night of
May 6 after Fugate was notified
of a possible drunk pedestrian
on U.S. Hwy. 75 near the Coal/
Atoka county line.
Fugate said as he was driving
to the area to investigate the
report, a vehicle in front of
him braked and served to the
left. Fugate then saw a man
walking on the highway and
sounded his horn and activated
his emergency lights. The
pedestrian looked back at him,
he said, and raised his hands. He
said when he stopped his patrol
unit and ordered Smallwood
to stop, Smallwood ignored
his commands and continued
walking away from him. The
officer said Smallwood was
then taken down with a leg
sweep and transported to the
Coal County jail.
Smallwood has pleaded not
guilty to misdemeanor public
intoxication and obstructing
an officer and is scheduled for
a June 20 hearing. His bond
was set at $1,500.
Actual Physical Control
of Vehicle While under the
Influence
Trooper John Ivey arrested
Christine L. Turpin, 54, Calvin,
after Coal County sheriff’s
deputy Zachary Rice notified
him of a woman in a parked
vehicle on S.H. 48 south of
Tupelo. Rice said he had
stopped to check the welfare of
the driver when he came upon
the parked vehicle.
Ivey said Turpin had an odor
of alcohol and unstable balance
and failed a field sobriety test.
She tested .11 on the state
breath test conducted at the
sheriff’s office.
Turpin pleaded not guilty to
misdemeanor actual physical
control of vehicle while under
the influence. On May 9, she
entered into a plea bargain
in which she was given a
10-month deferred sentence,
$500 fine plus costs, and
substance abuse assessment.

Lady Tigers battle to state semi-finals
—Tupelo girls beat pair of No. 1 teams before falling to Shattuck
By HERMAN BROWN
Tupelo correspondent
The Tupelo Lady Tigers had a
week of softball that most prep
teams would be ‘over the moon’
to experience.
Coach Jason Trimmer’s Lady
Tigers went to Stonewall Monday
and beat the No. 1 slow-pitch
softball team in Class 2A. The
two ‘neighbors’ used this regularseason meeting as a tune-up for
something much bigger. For
THS, it was a way to prepare for
the upcoming state tournament.
The Lady Tigers won a
marathon 9-inning victory 6-5 at
Stonewall.
Two days later, Tupelo went
to Shawnee and beat the No. 1
slow-pitch softball team in Class
A. The Lady Tigers were flying
high and looking for more.
Back-to-back wins over No.
1 ranked teams is a luxury few
softball teams get to experience.
The triumph over Red Oak
was certainly the more important
of the two wins. That’s because
it came in the quarter-finals of
the Class A slow-pitch state
tournament.
With “the team to beat” in their
rear-view mirror, the Lady Tigers
were dreaming of 2 more wins to
capture the state championship.
Sadly, Tupelo would not enjoy
the sweet taste of a championship
victory. THS’ magical ride ended
in a 9-4 loss to Shattuck in the
semi-finals. Shattuck would go
on to win the title with a 6-5 win
over Arnett.
Coach Trimmer paused later
to reflect on the wild week of
softball. He could not have been
more thrilled to see the Lady
Tigers beat a pair of No. 1 teams
in a 48-hour span. However, it
was the state championship he
wanted so badly for his girls.
“When we beat Red Oak, the
girls wanted to celebrate (in a
big way),” the coach said. “I
allowed myself one chest pump
for that one. But I reminded the
girls that this win over Red Oak
was not what we came to do. We
came to win three games (and
a state championship). I didn’t
want us to celebrate too much yet
because we still had something
bigger to accomplish.”
The girls had been fired up to
face the state’s top-ranked Red
Oak Lady Eagles. On the evening
before the game, the Lady Tigers
held a spirit-building ceremony.
“We had a bon fire and burned
a Red Oak jersey,” the coach
said. “The girls came out the
next day and beat Red Oak in
the state tournament. That is
why they were so fired up about
the win. But I was hoping for
something more on Wednesday.
I was thinking about winning 3
games at the state tournament.”
Prior to the state tournament,
Tupelo scored an exciting 6-5
victory over the No. 1 ranked
Class 2A Stonewall Lady
Longhorns on the SHS home
field. The victory on Monday
didn’t come until the end of a
9-inning thriller.
THS led 1-0 after 1 inning
and 2-0 after the third inning.
The Lady Tigers pushed the
advantage to 3-0 in the top of
the third. However, Stonewall
stormed back with a 4-run rally
in the bottom of the third to take
a 4-3 lead.
Stonewall played another run
in the bottom of the sixth inning
to make it a 5-3 Lady Longhorn
lead. Tupelo showed some grit in
the top of the seventh by scoring
twice to deadlock the score at 5-5.
The Lady Tigers later added the
sixth and winning run in the top
of the ninth inning. Stonewall
was unable to answer with a run
in the bottom of the ninth and
ended up losing 6-5.
Tupelo bats pounded out 14 hits
in the win. Meanwhile, Stonewall
managed only a half-dozen hits.
THS’ offensive assault was led
by 4 Lady Tigers with multiplehit games.
Haley Ellis was one hero with
a 3-for-4 showing that included 2
runs scored and 1 RBI.
Kurston Chamberlain was
2-for-3 with 2 RBI. Courtney
Hickman was 2-for-5 with 1
RBI. Paige Vick was also 2-for-5 with
1 run scored and 1 RBI. Here are the others with hits:
Brittany Sanders, 1-2, 1 RBI Phylisha Chamberlain, 1-4, 1
run scored
Kaitlin Watson, 1-4, 1 run
scored
Keara Bourland, 1-4 Lana Nelson, 1-4
The win at Stonewall proved to
the Lady Tigers they could beat
the best team in Class 2A softball.
What they were still wondering
was if they could beat the No. 1
team in Class A softball. They
wouldn’t have to wait long to get
that answer.
On Wednesday, Tupelo needed
another late-game rally to save
a victory. The Lady Tigers put
down the Red Oak Lady Eagles
5-4 with an incredible 3-run
rally in the bottom of the seventh
inning.
THS led 1-0 after 1 inning of
action. Red Oak responded with
a 3-run burst in the top of the
second inning. The Lady Eagles
extended the advantage to 4-1
with a run in the top of the third
frame.
Tupelo managed to cut the
deficit to 4-2 with a run in the
bottom of the fourth inning.
However, the Lady Tigers were
in a bad spot when the bottom of
the seventh inning arrived. They
were still down 4-2 and needing 2
to tie or 3 to win.
Kurston Chamberlain led off
the inning with a single. Phylisha
Chamberlain followed with a
single. Amber Cosar came up
next and singled to load the bases.
There was suddenly a growing
hope in the Tupelo dugout –
and with their rabid fans in the
stands.
Red Oak’s coach called time
to talk to his pitcher and defense.
That gave Lucy Palmer a chance
to ask her coach an important
question.
“We had been taking on the first
pitch,” Coach Trimmer recalls.
“But Lucy ask if they throw it flat,
is it OK for her to take a swing at
it. They figured we’d be taking
on the first pitch. I told her it was
OK if she got one flat to swing at
it.”
The Red Oak pitcher tossed
up a flat pitch, just as Lucy
expected. The move-in from
Coalgate blasted the ball over the
defenders’ heads to drive home

the Chamberlain sisters to tie the
game at 4-4.
Coach Trimmer then made an
offensive move. He called on
‘Ms. Dependable’ Lana Nelson
in a crucial pitch-hit role. Nelson
was hitting for Kaitlin Watson.
The Red Oak coach took no
chances with Nelson and issued
her an intentional walk.
That loaded the bases and
the table was set for victory.
However, a pop fly out followed
to make it 2 away.
The stage was now set for
Paige Vick to bat in a pressure
situation. Tupelo was desperate
to end the game in the bottom
of the seventh - and not give the
Lady Eagles a chance in extra
innings.
Coach Trimmer offered Paige
a solid piece of advice.
“If she throws it flat on the first
pitch, try to hit it over the fence,”
the coach suggested.
Paige responded to a blast that
appeared to be over the rover’s
head for the game-winning RBI.
Amber Cosar was the runner on
third base and saw the mighty
blow. Amber immediately raced
toward home plate. However, the
rover made an incredible fallingdown catch in the outfield.
“Get back and tag up,”
screamed Coach Trimmer to
Cosar, who also happened to fall
down on the play. She jumped
up and raced back to touch third
base. She then rocketed toward
home plate, hoping to beat
the throw and score the gamewinning run. She slid into home
plate ahead of the throw to secure
the victory, 5-4.
Tupelo had out-hit the Lady
Eagles 11-8 in seven innings. The
top 3 offensive players for THS
included Courtney Hickman, 2-3,
with 1 run scored, 1 RBI; Amber
Cosar, 2-3, with 1 run scored;
and Kurston Chamberlain, 2-3,
with 1 run scored.
Here are the other 5 hitters in
the win:
Phylisha Chamberlain, 1-2, 1
run scored, 1 RBI
Brittany Sanders, 1-3, double,
1 run scored, Luci Palmer, 1-3, 2-run double
in 7th to tie
Keara Bourland, 1-3
Haley Ellis, 1-3
This was one of the most
exciting and major wins for
the Lady Tigers in a long time.
Tupelo had just eliminated the
tournament favorite in a firstround shocker. The road to the
state championship was now
clear for the quarter-final winners
- Tupelo, Shattuck, New Lima
and Arnett. That total would be
cut in half in the next round.
In their semi-final game, Tupelo
stumbled defensively in the first
inning. The Lady Tigers began a
series of errors that would climb
to 5 in short order.
“We made 5 errors and they
scored off of every error,” the
THS coach said. “It was brutal.
We dropped a routine fly on the
very first play of the game. We
made another error in the second
inning, an error in the third
inning and 2 in the fourth inning.

Assistant Chief of
Police Steven Jett states
in his probable cause
affidavit that Lancaster
was arrested May 7
following a traffic stop.
Lancaster was a passenger
in a vehicle having a
cracked windshield and
an expired tag.
After
Lancaster
was arrested on an
outstanding Coal County
warrant, Jett found
a baggie containing
marijuana in Lancaster’s
pocket. After the driver
stated that an open bottle
of liquor was in the
vehicle and consented to
a search of the vehicle,
the officer found a
syringe containing a
clear liquid in the pocket
of a pair of jeans. Both
the driver and Lancaster
said the jeans belonged to
Lancaster, and Lancaster
admitted that the syringe
was his. He was arrested
and transported to jail.
Lancaster has pleaded
not guilty to the charges
and is scheduled to return
to court on May 22. His
bond was set at $12,000.
Driving under the

Jett said he stopped
Neal’s vehicle after
the vehicle crossed the
fog line twice and the
centerline once.
Neal had bloodshot
eyes, a strong odor
alcohol,
and
was
unsteady on his feet,
Jett said. An 18-pack of
beer and an open beer
were on the passenger
floorboard, and Neal told
the officer he had been

Lady Tigers
Continued from Page A-5
It killed us because they
scored off every one of the
errors we made.”
Shattuck led 4-0 in the
first inning and 5-0 after
the third inning. Tupelo
answered with 2 runs in the
top of the fourth to make
it a 5-2 game. However,
Shattuck poured another 4
runs across the plate in the
fourth inning to make it a
9-2 game.
When the seventh inning
arrived, it was go-time for
Tupelo. This squad had
beaten No. 1 opponents
with last-inning rallies in
the 2 previous games. Was
there a third last-inning
comeback in the works?
Phylisha Chamberlain
led off the seventh with a
single. Amber Cosar came
up next and also singled.
The third batter drew a
walk to load the bases. The
Lady Tigers got a single
from Kaitlin Watson to
score a run and make it a
9-3 game. Tupelo then got
a fielder’s choice to score
another run, making it 9-4.
“That got me to thinking
that maybe we have a
chance,” Coach Trimmer
said. “We showed some
grit in this situation.”
Sadly, the next two
batters were erased on a
fly ball to shortstop and
a game-ending fly ball to
the left fielder, just behind
third base.
The game ended on a
9-4 count. For Tupelo,
there would be no magical
comeback for a third
straight game. The last out
also ended the season for
the Lady Tigers.
Courtney
Hickman
closed out the game with a
perfect 3-for-3 showing at
the plate. She also scored
1 run.
Amber Cosar was 2-for3 and scored 1 run.
Phylisha Chamberlain
was 1-for-3 and scored 2
runs. Kaitlin Watson was
1-for-3 with 1 RBI. Keara
Bourland rounded out the
hit list by going 1-for-3.
The head coach was not
thrilled with the semi-final
loss. The 5 errors and too
many fly-ball outs spelled
doom for Tupelo’s chances.
Even so, Coach Trimmer
had a simple description of
his girls for this season –
and for the future.
“They are just winners,”
he said. “They had a great
season. We’ll lose a couple
of seniors from this team,
but we’ll have a bunch of
them back next year.”
The first order of
business next season
will be to find capable
replacements for seniors
Kurston Chamberlain and
Luci Palmer.
“We will be looking for
good things next season,”
the coach said.

Griffith said rain is both beneficial and

“If it rains too much, I can’t work for a few

grow, which means yards don’t need to be
mowed, which means no profit.”

In the beginning, 45
states chose to adopt
Common Core with
the exception of Texas,
Virginia and a few others.
Since that time, the
Obama Administration
has used the No Child Left
Behind waiver process
to offer points for those
aligned to Common Core
in keeping the waiver.
The NCLB waiver also
allows for another option
– standards created by the
state in consultation with
career tech and higher
education. Texas just
obtained a waiver from
NCLB by having their
higher education system
deem their standards
as being “college and

the pathway Oklahoma
is pursuing through

S)DANA L. MURPHY
COMMISSIONER
DONE AND PERFORMED THIS 7th DAY OF MAY, 2014.
BY ORDER OF THE COMMISSION:
S)PEGGY MITCHELL
Commission Secretary
LPXLP
The intent of HB
3399 is to prevent the
State School Board
(SSB) from ceding the
authority of the state for
standards to any outside
entity – meaning we
can’t use Common Core
(or Oklahoma Academic
Standards - OAS) in
the future because they
have a national origin
and were created outside
Oklahoma. Our tests
must also be designed,
owned and controlled by
the SSB, though schools
can take the ACT and
other ‘extra’ tests.
HB 3399 also forces the
SSB to remove itself from
any current situations in
which Oklahoma isn’t in
control of its standards
and/or testing. It
reinforces that schools can
use any curricula, books
or instructional materials,
etc. they decide. Now that education
experts have researched
Common Core, many
are finding the standards
insufficient. A January 29, 2013,
Washington Post article,
“A Tough Critique of
Common Core on early
childhood
education”
nicely summed up what’s
becoming the common
consensus
among
educators about Common
Core - the process for
creating the standards
had too little research,
public dialogue, or input
from educators. These
are the people in the
classroom. They know
how students learn best
and what they’re capable
of comprehending. We
have thousands of these
professionals in Oklahoma
and they’re who should be
determining Oklahoma’s
standards.
Edward Miller, a writer
and teacher in Wellfleet,
MA, and Nancy CarlssonPaige, a professor emerita
of
early
childhood
education at Lesley
University in Cambridge,
MA, found there were no
K-3 classroom teachers
or
early
childhood
professionals among the
135 committee members
who wrote and reviewed
the
Common
Core
Standards. When the standards
were revealed in March
2010,
many
early
childhood educators and
researchers,
including
Stephanie Feeney of the
University of Hawaii and
chair of the Advocacy
Committee
of
the
National Association of
Early Childhood Teacher
Educators, were shocked
that none of the Common
Core committee members
had backgrounds in child
development or early
childhood education.
The article also notes
that the Common Core
website concealed or
distorted
comments
from the public on the
standards to make it seem
that public opinion was
more favorable than it
actually was.
The website also
downplayed the fact that
many believe the standards
are
developmentally
inappropriate.
Site
administrators say this is
simply parents concerned
their “children are being
pushed too hard,” which
isn’t the case. They failed to mention
“The Joint Statement
on Early Childhood
Health and Education
Professionals on the
Common Core Standards
Initiative,” which shared
the opposition of more
than 500 early childhood
professionals including
educators, pediatricians,
developmental
psychologists,
and
researchers (many among
the most prominent
members in their fields).
Their statement read
in part, “We have grave
concerns about the core
standards for young
children…The proposed
standards conflict with
compelling new research
in cognitive science,
neuroscience,
child
development, and early
childhood education about
how young children learn,
what they need to learn,
and how best to teach
them in kindergarten and
the early grades…” Another
opponent
of Common Core is
University of Arkansas
professor of education
reform emerita, Dr.
Sandra Stotsky, who was
formerly responsible for
developing the widelypraised Massachusetts
English/Language Arts
Standards. Massachusetts
has been a national
education leader with
some of the highest ACT
and NAEP scores in the
last 20 years. Dr. Stotsky
sat on the Common Core
Validation
Committee
and refused to validate
the standards saying
they wouldn’t make
students “college-ready.”
Massachusetts is now back
peddling on implementing
Common Core due to
such concerns.
Another opponent
is Stanford University
professor of mathematics
emeritus, Dr. James
Milgram, who was also a
member of the Common
Core’s
Validation
Committee. Like Stotsky,
he said the standards
wouldn’t make high
school graduates “college
and career ready.” Milgram specifically
said
the
standards
wouldn’t
prepare
students to study science,
technology, engineering
& math (STEM) in
a selective four-year
college. These are fields
that U.S. businesses are
desperately seeking to
fill but can’t find properly
educated applicants. He
and Stotsky concluded
that a “gigantic fraud”
has been committed
against parents by those
developing, promoting
and endorsing Common
Core. Bottom line - lots of
falsehoods are being
spread about Common
Core. The standards
aren’t high quality; they
weren’t created by a stateled initiative; they weren’t
written by teachers,
parents, administrators,
researchers or content
experts; and the standards
won’t make the U.S. more
competitive with other
countries.
Common Core is a
grand experiment and
Oklahoma should learn
from the chaos resulting
from
New
York’s
implementation of it.

COALGATE RECORD REGISTER—MAY 14, 2014—PAGE A-13
Wildcats’ successful baseball season ends at Oktaha
—Coalgate falls twice in regional baseball tournament action
By HERMAN BROWN
Coalgate correspondent
The Coalgate Wildcats saw
their 2014 baseball season
draw to a close last Thursday.
CHS suffered back-to-back
losses in the Class 3A regional
tournament at Oktaha.
In the opener, Coalgate
suffered a 16-10 loss to the
hosting Oktaha Tigers in
a 9-inning marathon. The
Wildcats were then eliminated
in Game 2 on an 11-2 setback
to the Okemah Panthers.
“The loss to Oktaha was
a tough one,” said Coalgate
coach Phil Wilkinson. “We
had a 4-run lead going into
the seventh inning and could
not close it out.”
CHS led 2-0 after one
inning, 3-0 after two innings
and 7-1 after three innings.
The advantage was 10-6
going into the seventh innings.
However, the Tigers erased
the deficit with a 3-run home
run and a later run. The effort
tied the game at 10-10. When
Coalgate could not answer
with a run in the bottom of the
seventh inning, the game was
forced into extra innings.
Neither team scored in the
eighth inning. So the two
teams played on into the ninth
inning. Oktaha then exploded
for 6 runs to salvage a wild
16-10 victory.
Coalgate was outhit 17-10
in the contest.
Of their 10 hits, the Wildcats
got half of them from one
player. Laredo Beal was an
impressive 5-for-6 at the plate.
He banged out 3 doubles and
added a pair of singles. Beal
also scored twice and drove
in 3 runs.
Jesse Pebworth was 2-for-4
with a 2 singles and 2 RBI.
The other hits came from
Tyler Price (1-3) with a single
and 2 runs scored, Nathan
Price (1-3) with a single and 1
run scored, and Cody Franks
(1-4) with a triple, 3 RBI and
1 run scored.
Coach Wilkinson ended
up using 3 pitchers in the
loss.
Cody Hammons
started and worked 6 and 1/3
innings. He allowed 9 runs
on 12 hits, 1 walk and hit 1
batter. Hammons recorded 6
strikeouts.
Laredo Beal came on
in relief and pitched 2 1/3
innings. He surrendered 4
runs on 3 hits, 2 walks and hit
2 batters. He did not have a
strikeout.
Cody Franks was inserted
late and worked 1/3 of an
inning. Franks gave up 3 runs
on 2 hits, 0 walks and hit no
batters. Franks recorded the
final out on a strikeout.
Coach Wilkinson was
disappointed with the late
slide by the Wildcats.
“We played a pretty good
game overall,” he said. “But
we let them get back into the
game with us. We didn’t put it
away when we had a chance.
Oktaha did what they needed
to do to come back on us. If
we’d made a couple of plays
in the seventh inning it would
have been a different story.”
The CHS coach offered
praise for Beal for his
offensive performance.
“He hit the heck out of the
ball,” Coach Wilkinson said.
“He got those 3 doubles and 2
singles in 6 at-bats. That’s a
good game at the plate.”
The coach also saluted
Cody Hammons for his work
on the mound.
“Cody threw real well,” the
coach added. “I think maybe
he got a little tired in the
seventh (inning).”
The loss dropped Coalgate
into the losers’ bracket.
The Wildcats then faced
the Okemah Panthers in an
elimination showdown.
Okemah wasted little time
in attacking Coalgate. The
Panthers jumped out to a 4-0
lead in the first inning and a
7-1 edge in the second inning.
OHS went on to outscore
Coalgate 4-1 down the stretch
to seal the 11-2 final score.
Okemah doubled up CHS
on hits with 10 to the 5 by the
Wildcats.
Coalgate had 5 different
batters with 1 hit each. Here
is the list in the season finale:
Cutter Brown, 1-2, 1 RBI
Tyler Price, 1-3, 1 run
scored
Jesse Pebworth, 1-3, 1 run
scored
Cody Franks, 1-3,
Laredo Beal, 1-3
Cody Franks was the starting
pitcher and was saddled with
the loss. He went 1 and 2/3
innings and allowed 7 runs
on 3 hits, 4 walks and hit 3
batters.
Franks was lifted for
Laredo Beal, who finished out
the final 4 and 1/3 innings.
Beal allowed 4 runs on 7 hits
and 0 walks. He recorded 3
strikeouts.
Coach Wilkinson felt the
9-inning loss to Oktaha took a
lot out of his Wildcats.
“Anytime you play an
extra-inning game and get
beat, it’s a downer,” he said.
“I thought we were ready to
play (Okemah) but they came
out and scored 7 runs pretty
quick. That took the air out
of us.”
The 11-2 put the final nail
in the CHS coffin. Despite
the loss, Coach Wilkinson is
proud of the Wildcats for the
season they put together.
“With mostly the same
players, this team won 7
games and lost in the district
tournament last season,” he
said. “We won 15 games
this year and were district
champions. They worked hard
and made vast improvement
this year. Overall, it was a
successful season. I think
our future is bright. If they
continue to improve, we’ll
have a chance to do what our
fans expect us to do … win
games and have success in
the playoffs. I am so thankful
for the fan support we have
here in Coalgate. They filled
up the stands in our district
tournament. They are used
to winners around here and
that’s what we want to give
them. We’ll have a chance
to do that next year. We’ll
return all of our pitching and
that’s a good place to start.
We’ll miss our seniors, but
we should be just fine if we
can find some replacements.”

Bailey found a pipe containing a
green leafy substance that field
tested positive for marijuana
in Hawkins’ jacket pocket.
Hawkins also had a loaded
handgun and an extra magazine
in his jacket pocket. A loaded
Smith and Wesson revolver
and 18 extra rounds were in his
pickup.
During Hawkins’ initial
court appearance without legal
representation, the Court entered
a plea of not guilty on his behalf
and he was released on $3,000
bond. On May 5, pursuant to a
deferred prosecution agreement
with the District Attorney’s
office, the Court ordered that
the case against Hawkins be
dismissed upon payment of
court costs.
Obtaining merchandise by
false pretenses
Martin Ray Hackney, 18,
Allen, OK, was charged May
8 with misdemeanor obtaining
merchandise by false pretenses
after he used another person’s
credit card to buy almost $200
worth of gasoline in Coalgate.
Investigator Jarel Bailey states
in his probable cause affidavit
that an Allen man contacted him
concerning two Coal County
charges on his Visa card that
someone else had made. The
man said he had lost his wallet
in Allen and thought he had
canceled all his credit cards but
overlooked Visa. He became
aware of the situation when he
began receiving statements for
several transactions he had not
made. Two of those transactions
were for gasoline purchased at
Coalgate service stations.
During an investigation that
followed, it was learned that
Hackney used the credit card at
two separate locations to fill a
barrel with gasoline.
Hackney has pleaded not
guilty to the charge and is
scheduled for a June 20 return
court appearance. He was
released from custody on a
personal recognizance bond.
