Our love for pastels drives our desire to paint with it and share our personal visions and interpretations of the world around us. Pastel is a wondrous medium, just a step away from pure pigment. With just enough binder to hold it in stick form, pastels are applied using diverse techniques producing the exceptional and varied works of art that make up this exhibition. I would like to extend our appreciation to The Art Center–Highland Park and their staff for providing us a beautiful venue and working with us to bring this exhibition to the public. We are extremely grateful to our donors, whose generous contributions and support of our society and this exhibition, make possible the $8,500 in cash and merchandise awards for the artists. We give special thanks to our judges, as their job is not an easy one. Our judge of selections, Richard McKinley, had the task of selecting the accepted paintings from the numerous entries. From amongst all the paintings in the exhibition, our judge of awards, Sandra Burshell, will choose those she considers deserving of additional recognition. I thank every one of our members who have put in effort to make this show a reality. Most of all, I thank the pastel painters – past participants, present participants and future participants of our exhibitions. It is they who put their hearts into their work, it is they who strive to better themselves and when their work is accepted into competitions, it is they who become the inspiration for others. Finally, I would like to thank the public for your appreciation of our work that continues to motivate us to excel. With gratitude to all, –tatijana CPP PRESIDENT Tatijana Jacenkiw, CPP-D, PSA, IAPS-MC -4- Judge of Selections SPECIAL THANKS TO OUR DONORS Advanced Group Ampersand Art Supply Armadillo Art & Craft ArtDeTriumph & Artful Framer Studios Blick Art Materials Canson Inc. Sandra has been active in promoting the status of pastel, serving on the Board of IAPS (International Association of Pastel Societies) since 1994, giving workshops and talks on the subject. Richard divides his time between painting the locations he is passionate about, reinterpreting those paintings back in the studio, writing about art matters, and instructing workshops. Sandra has lived in New Orleans for more than 20 years, and spends several days a week in her studio on Chartres Street – where the French Quarter architecture can often spark her next idea. “Jurying is never an easy exercise and this exhibition was no different. There were many fine paintings that ultimately had to be excluded due to the limitations. It was in no way a reflection upon their merit. At the end of the day, it is just one artist’s opinion!” She also takes workshops from artists she admires. “As an artist you can never learn enough,” she says. Sandra will judge the exhibition in person as well as teach a workshop on “Atmospheric Interiors in Pastel.” ABOUT THE SHOW For our Fourth Biennial National Exhibition, 256 images were submitted by 98 artists from around the country. That’s a 20% increase over our 2011 National Show. Of these, 100 paintings representing 61 artists were selected. Congratulations to these pastelists for having their strokes of genius accepted. Also a huge thanks goes out to Tatijana Jacenkiw and Brian Sauerland, our president and vice president respectfully, and Dotty Carringi, and the many volunteers for an outstanding job in all aspects of making this CPP’s largest and best exhibit to date.
