North Carolina Middle School Honors Chorus Aria Westbrook, Music Director Hawfields Middle Damani Russell is a well-rounded 8th grade student at Hawfields Middle. He has been a leader in the HMS mixed chorus for two years and this year is participating in a Select Choir that meets from 7:15 until 8:05 every morning for rehearsal of advanced music. Damani has been selected amongst thousands of his peers state-wide to participate in the 160-member NC Middle School Honors Chorus which will hold a concert on Sunday November 10th at the Steven's Center in Winston-Salem. Damani is the first student from Hawfields Middle School to make the Honors Chorus since 2001! He has worked extremely hard for his accomplishments and I couldn't be prouder of him! Congratulations, Damani! Well-deserved! Around Our Schools Shout Outs North Carolina Middle School Honors Chorus October 2013 Volume 4 Elizabeth Zint, Music Director Woodlawn Middle Two students from Woodlawn have been selected for the prestigious North Carolina Middle School Honors Chorus and earned the highest score in the Central Division of the State in their respected singing parts (alto and tenor) and tied for 2nd for the whole state! Pictured at left: Nate Small (son of ABSS’ own Chris and Dottie Small) and Caroline Segars (daughter of ABSS’ own Lisa Segars and husband Doug) Congratulations to our two very talented Woodlawn students! Here’s a little more information on the NC Honors Chorus sponsored by the North Carolina Music Educators Association Approximately 1500 students in grades 6-9 audition with only 160 selected (top 10%). Every year, the Middle School Honors Chorus is held in November, performing at the North Carolina Music Educator’s In-Service Conference. This chorus provides an opportunity for the very best singers from across the state to come together and work with a nationally acclaimed choral conductor. This year the chorus will be conducted by Dr. Al Sturgis. The Honors Chorus will take place on November 9th and 10th, in Winston-Salem. As in previous years, the concert will be held in the Stevens Center. Honors Chorus auditions are held in three regions across the state: West, Central, and East. In order for students to audition for Honors Chorus, they must sing their voice part of the selected audition piece. Each student auditions in front of a single judge in a closed audition. They will also sight-sing a short melodic exercise. If you want to attend: the 28th annual Middle School Honors Chorus will be held at The Stevens Center in Winston-Salem at 1:30 on Sunday, November 10th. Around Our Schools Shout Outs E. M. Shout Out to all the teachers and staff who made Garrett's Book and Treat night such a great success! This Tuesday, parents and costumed students came back to school from 6-7:30 P.M. and chose 3 things from a menu of fun and informative reading-based activities going on all over the school. Sessions were about 25 min. long and parents got to see what kind of reading lessons their kids did in school, how teachers do a read aloud, shop at the Book Fair, see online reading resources, and get treats along the way! Around Our Schools Shout Outs October 2013 Volume 4 At the end of the night, everyone gathered in the cafeteria and parents turned in their session "tickets" to be eligible for drawings for book baskets and WalMart gift cards. It was a wonderful night of learning and fun!
