PRESS KIT © TPR / Bertrand Duquenne TAHITI PEARL REGATTA A word from the President What are, according to you, the ingredients that make the Tahiti Pearl Regatta successful? Part of the organization team, in presence of the Mayor of Uturoa, during the inauguration of the TPR Village. © TPR / Fred Jacq T H E R A I AT E A R E G AT TA A S S O C I AT I O N Founded by the late Henry Dejust, the Raiatea Regatta Association is in charge of the festive and administrative organization with many enthusiastic volunteers. It is composed of: Violetta Amaru-Paradot, President of the Association, Fred Boutet, Secretary, Stephane Mercadal, Treasurer, Patricia Hart and Gilles Laberneze, in charge of the TPR village, Fred Jacq, botanist and photographer, Fred, Stouf, Panpan, in charge of shuttles. Let’s not forget the volunteers in charge of the registrations, T-shirt sales, the organization’s skippers and all the friends of the TPR who give a helping hand. The backstage Archipelagoes team is in charge of the medias and partners. “For 13 years, the most fundamental element has been passion. First of all, it is a passion for sailing, expressed by volunteering teams who are before anything else, friends; competitors and participants also, some of them haven’t missed one edition, they all enjoy seeing each other from year to year. It is a passion for sport too, which expands and progresses – it’s a real satisfaction – at the local and international level. After famous sailing leading figures like Kersauzon or Borgnon who sponsored the event, having with us a quadruple world champion this year, elected sailor of the year in 2015 and a future Olympic medallist, who learned sailing here in Polynesia, is also a sign of our will to win in strength. Georges Kohrel (of the “Voiles de St Tropez”) and the “Fédération Tahitienne de Voile” strongly support us on this goal. The last element is generosity and friendliness. This is how Pierre Dinard, still Honorary President of the TPR, has oriented the spirit of the regatta: we make sure to keep it that way.” What is the greatest challenge in the organization of such a race? “The greatest challenge is human. The greatest difficulties are the logistics. We change islands and places everyday. Our participants are invited to discover everyday a different water racing area with challenging itineraries requiring good technique, tactics, strategy, which are astounding by their beauty, no matter the weather conditions. Our greatest challenge is to encourage encounters, to meet one another, and to keep a real diversity of cultures, languages, boats, and social categories, in and around the TPR. This is the alchemy we are looking for, both through a demanding sportive practice and through consecutive, but different parties. Sailing can be of a solitary passion, but it is often a gathering of friends, groups, and families. We face the elements, we compete with other crews and in the evening, we exchange our emotions, our frustrations, our hopes for the next day.” This year a company specialized in covering the main sport events for the media, A.S.O., is coming to follow the Tahiti Pearl Regatta. This media coverage will bring the Tahiti Pearl Regatta in the spotlights all over the world. What message do you expect to relay through the big international medias? “The arrival of the Amaury Sport Organization group, is already an accomplishment. We had to convince them to take an interest in us – they are mostly involved in worldwide sports events. And we had to convince our partners, namely the Country, to implement the means for our ambitions in terms of media exposure. Thanks to the renowned and talented photographers who, each year, cover the regatta in all its angles, the Tahiti Pearl Regatta is known, as a sports regatta, by many yachtsmen. What we expect now is to widen this framework. Thanks to audiovisual on all channels (hertzian, cable, digital), we hope french Polynesia will be perceived as an ideal place for sailing, especially sports sailing, and to also remind the unique bonds between Polynesians - the greatest navigators of the entire maritime human history and the ocean. The Amaury group allows us to broadcast up to what we expect: nearly 20 thematic channels in the world will release a 26-minutes report; and we hope between 50 and 100 channels or sites, on Internet or on cable will play back and broadcast the daily videos, the teasers and all the images that we will produce. This is a unique visibility. If it works, it will only be a start.” 3 TPR 2016 AN UNAVOIDABLE RENDEZVOUS Over the editions, the Tahiti Pearl Regatta, or TPR, has been able to become an unavoidable rendezvous for all sailing lovers. Each month of May, no less than 50 local and international teams gather together in the waters of the Raromatai to participate to this great regatta organized by the Raiatea Regatta Association, the Tahitian Sailing Federation and the company Archipelagoes, with the precious support of the partners. From a sporting point of view, the TPR is open to all kind of sailing boats (single hulls, catamarans, trimarans, private boats, charters on transpacific stopovers, team or racing boats, etc.) without size limitation. Races are conducted under the authority of the Tahitian Sailing Federation and are ruled by the ISAF rules (racing rules of sailing 2013-2016). CHOOSING THE ITINERARY Tradition being a must, the Internet users vote on Facebook before each TPR to choose the itinerary of the competition. For this 13th edition, they have chosen the “Superstition Itinerary”, a program of 6 races between the islands of Raiatea, Bora Bora and Taha’a, alternating lagoon and highsea sailing. AN INTERNATIONAL DIMENSION Thanks to its enchanting surroundings and its friendliness spirit, the TPR quickly imposed itself as the greatest festive regatta of the Pacific islands. This notoriety attracts each year 4 3-7 MAY international teams, coming from all over the world. This year, the TPR will receive an Australian team of nine teammates, a French team from the “Voiles de St. Tropez” and about 10 sailboats from the Rallye around the world “World Arc”. A BEAUTIFUL NOTORIETY For several editions, the coverage of the TPR is ensured by invited medias and allows the presence of the event in 30 to 40 pages of international publications, and in all local medias (press, radio, TV). Web communication on social networks, Facebook first, and the promotional trips of the TPR teams, enable the notoriety of the regatta throughout the year. Thus the TPR participates in the sustainable exposure of French Polynesia in the world. This year, this last aspect will be especially highlighted thanks to the collaboration of Amaury Sport Organisation (A.S.O.). This company, famous in the world for the organization and promotion of sporting events like the ‘Tour de France’ and the ‘Dakar race’ will travel to Raiatea with the support of the Ministry of Tourism, and will ensure media coverage of the TPR to its media network. ECONOMIC BENEFITS The economic benefits of the TPR for the Leeward Islands were estimated at 33 million French Pacific francs (XPF) in 2013. The beneficiaries include many service providers of these islands: accommodation, transportation, restaurants, boat rentals, nautical equipment, etc. © TPR / Tor Johnson THE LUCKY 13 EDITION C O R P O R AT E CHALLENGE Local companies and international brands can display their logos on the sails of the Tahiti Pearl Regatta by sponsoring a boat or setting up a crew. RACING CATEGORIES RATING CERTIFICATES The TPR proposes several racing categories, by type of registered boats. • The “Racing” category includes two subcategories: “Single Hull Racing” or “Multi Hulls Racing” and concerns boats having a gauge certificate. According to the total number of participants, 2 or 3 single hull divisions may be formed. The crews run in “compensated time” (a handicap is attributed to each boat to ensure the balance of the ranking). • Boats not having a gauge certificate are allowed in the race and will be ranked in “real time in the “Cruising” category. • Companies and sponsored crews are registered in the “Corporate Challenge” a kind of race within the race. In each category (Single Hull Racing, Multi Hull Racing, Corporate Challenge, and Cruising) the three best crews will step on the podium to receive the TPR prizes. To compute the rating, the race official measurers will check: • The rating certificate of each team • The compliance of each boat’s rating certificate • The presence of the required equipment on the boat and their its correct position onboard. Computing the compensated times will be done in time/ time. 6 Trophy TPR Single hull div.1 1. L’Agathe - Pascal Beaudet 2. Horo Horo - Gaël Lamisse 3.
