We cannot act as a clearing house for shipmate
U.S. Navy Ships that Sailed Viet Nam Waters 1962 – 1975 More and more, Viet Nam era shipmates are becoming concerned that sailing in south-east Asian waters during that war could have caused exposure to chemicals that may have affected health as we grow older. Official government positions are mixed and most veterans seem to have to fight the VA on a case by case basis. As a service to our shipmates, this section has a Navy memo this is the definitive list of the 713 navy ships that have operated in Vietnam waters during the conflict period (1962 – 1975.) Note that the list includes multiple (66) submarines: fast attack, boomers and DBF's in it. The list, however, does not document any of the potential for exposure from “boots on the ground” by any boats that may have docked while in the Vietnam waters. Also, potential exposure while in blue water, such as snorkeling or concentration in distilled water for personnel consumption, has not been conclusively proven or disproven, although currently denied by the Veterans Administration. Further blue water discussion can be read in “A Re-Analysis of Blue Water Navy Veterans and Agent Orange Exposure” at http://bluewaternavy.org/ReIOM.htm. Other resources are available on the Blue Water Navy main page at http://bluewaternavy.org PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, the Perch Base USSVI has no other information than that here. We cannot act as a clearing house for shipmate information, exchange e-mails or any other involvement. This is presented for information only! THE SECRETARY OF THE NAVY WASHINGTON , D.C. 20350-1000 June 17, 2010 --- . ~ The Honorable Daniel K. Akaka Chairman, Committee on Veterans Affairs United States Senate Washington, DC 20510-1103 ~ Dear Mr. Chairman: -.. -· (J'\ cf) Thank you for your memorandum of April28, 2010, requesting the Navy prepare a list of Navy ships that served off the coast of Vietnam from 1962 to 197 5. Enclosed you will find a list of 713 ships that earned either the Vietnam Service Medal or the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal for Vietnam service from 1962 onward compiled by the Naval History and Heritage Command. The Navy and Marine Corps Awards Manual (SECNAVINST 1650.1H) defines the area in which a ship must have operated during this time period to be eligible for these awards as follows: "water areas from a point on the east coast of Vietnam at the border of Vietnam with China southeastward to 21N, 108-15E; thence southward to 18N, 108-15E; thence southeastward to 17-30N, 111 E; thence southward to 11 N, 111 E; thence southwestward to 7N, 105E; thence westward to 7N, 103E; thence northward to 9-30N, 103E; thence northeastward to 10-15N, 104-27E; thence northward to a point on the west coast of Vietnam at the border of Vietnam with Cambodia." This geographic area is depicted on the enclosed map. The enclosed list also includes ships that received an Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal for participation in the evacuation of Cambodia (Operation EAGLE PULL), the evacuation of Vietnam (Operation FREQUENT WIND), and the Mayaguez Operation. As no definition of the term "off the coast of Vietnam" was provided, this represents the most logical estimation of that phrase we are able to define. Narrowing the list down to those ships that operated within a closer proximity to the Vietnam mainland requires designating precise latitude and longitude boundaries for the area considered to be off the coast of Vietnam. If those boundaries are established, the deck logs for the ships on the enclosed list might be researched to determine which served within the area defmed. The deck logs for Navy ships from 1962 to 1975 are no longer in Navy custody. In accordance with Title 44 requirements, we have transferred those records to the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). Should the Committee on Veterans Affairs wish to pursue a more in depth study of this matter, it would need to contact that agency. Also of note in this matter, NARA has built a database of Navy ships that conducted naval gunfire support missions off Vietnam between 1966 and 1973. The Combat Naval Gunfire Support (CONGA) database is accessible online at the NARA website: http://aad.archives.gov/aad/fielded-search.jsp?dt=842&cat=WR28&tf=F&bc=,sl) As always, if I can be of any further assistance, please let me know.
