The first six weeks is but a memory and the second six weeks is well underway. Life at CMS could not be any better. See You At The Pole Only a few more days left to purchase a 2015 CMS 96 page, hardback yearbook for the low price of $22. After October 31, the price will be $25. Students have the option to personalize their book with their name on front cover for an additional $5. All pre-sales before November 1 will be in a drawing to receive their yearbook free of charge! Drawing will be on November 3. Contact Mrs. Andrews in Room 3, or see any yearbook staff. Monster Mash Dance A record CMS crowd gathered for the annual ‘See You At The Pole’ event, led by students and Mr. James Greer. Students and teachers gathered in small groups, praying for our school, our community, and our country. Show above with students are teachers Cindy Tomlin, Holly Burns and Hiram Harrison. Meet Our Teachers Ms. Renee Verdine has been working at Center Middle School as an ESL teacher for 34 years. She attended three universities, including Baylor, SFA, and Sam Houston State. Her favorite thing about working with students is that most of them want to learn and are very nice and thoughtful. She has eleven dogs, two horses as well as Brahman cows! Her favorite quote is, “Hard work pays rich dividends.” In one word, she thinks CMS is ‘AWESOME’! Monster Mash Dance, on Sat. Nov 1st. 7pm - 10pm for all middle school students. Wear your costume! There will be door prizes, a best costume prize and a "Thriller " dance competition. Students need to get their groups together and start practicing! There will be a variety of food and drinks for sale and also a "haunted photo booth" with crazy pictures of students to be purchased. If you can help, we are in need of pumpkins and decorations to be donated for this event. Coach Alex Cloudy is new to the CMS campus, but not to Center ISD. He grew up in Center, graduating from CHS in 2009. He is an East Texas Baptist University Alumni. His mother is CMS Assistant Principal, Felicia Cloudy. Coach Cloudy says CMS is an amazing place to be. His favorite quote is, “It is what it is, until you MAKE it something more!” We are always pleased to see our CHS grads come back to their hometown to make a difference in the lives of our students. CMS Beta Club participated in the Poultry Festival 5K Chicken Run. Matt Haddox is shown above giving direction to CMS Beta Club students in preparation for Living Literature competition. Junior Chamber of Commerce Fifty Six members of the Shelby County Junior Chamber of Commerce gathered at the historic Shelby County Courthouse for orientation, followed by registering for volunteer hours at the Poultry Festival. JCC members are required to have six volunteer hours each semester. See You At The Pole James Greer conducted our program with the help of CMS students. At left, Artis Nickerson with CISD School Board Member, Jim Sawyer, after completing 3 hours of JCC Volunteer hours preparing the big stage for the Poultry Festival. #cmsridernation Behind the Scenes at CMS Before our school year started this year, there was a lady working very hard to make sure our classrooms and hallways were ready for students. She did whatever she was asked to do with a smile on her face. Linda Tijerina is one of our custodians at CMS. This is the second year she has been taking care of CMS. Linda has two girls and three boys, and a total of 18 grandchildren and one great grandchild. She says she really enjoys the people at CMS, and the staff is so nice to her. She shared her least favorite thing to do is clean the bathrooms! Linda shared some pretty interesting stories with Mrs. Andrews and myself. If you see Linda around the campus, ask her to give you some details! Contributed by Mark Perkins Yearbook/Journalism Student, Mark Perkins, is shown with CMS custodian, Linda Tijerina. F Y I 40 BOOK CHALLENGE has been issued by Sharon Rice, CMS Reading Academy teacher. Students have been challenged to read 40 books this school year. Students choose the books they wish to read and afterwards, write a letter to Mrs. Rice about the book, discussing his/her feelings about the book. Students meeting their goal will be invited to a celebration at the end of the school year. 6th Grade UIL preparation has begun! Sharon Rice is assisting Toni Ford this year and has been assigned to organize sixth grade events. Mrs. Rice asks parents to encourage their sixth graders to get involved! Tryouts for events will begin soon. Coach Stephanie Morgan wants to remind everyone there are only two games left in girls’ volleyball this season. October 20 game will be played in Jasper, and our last home game will be October 27 against Diboll. This year’s team has worked hard, learned a lot, and are getting better each week. We will finish the season strong and begin basketball season only a couple of weeks after volleyball. Using Ipads, students researched information for their ‘Shay’s Rebellion Web Hunt’ activity while Mr. Rowe facilitated learning. Two seventh grade ladies in Coach Alex Cloudy’s Science classroom have a choice of creating an entertaining, creative, informative presentation with Keynote, Imovie, or Powerpoint to present research over a catastrophic disaster. Check our next newsletter for presentation coverage. Drama comes to life in Karen Belrose’s seventh grade classroom. Students wrote their own plays and are acting them out as their teacher records. Center Middle School GT students have been creating educational and interactive activities for several weeks for the community to enjoy. Their efforts will results in donations being made to CASA. This event will be held October 21 at CMS gym from 5:00—7:30 PM. Enjoy obstacle events, arcade style games, music, scavenger hunt, concessions, cake walk, and prizes. Students are preparing a new version of Cinderella, titled “The Toby Show.” One Act is directed by CMS Art teacher, Allison Smith. Sixth grade students in Mary Hockenberry’s Science class testing metals and non-metals. Above, students love lab days in Science. The students are learning photography basics, marketing skills, as well as basic journalism in order to publish a yearbook to showcase our CMS campus. We will be selling the following ads: Commercial ads—available to parents of CMS students with business contacts Buddy ads—Students may purchase a 1/4 page ad for a picture of themselves with their friends. Memory ads—Parents/Guardians may purchase an ad to publish pictures and good luck wishes for their child. Homework Help for Parents! Help your child get the most out of homework! Parents play an essential role in learning. Assisting with homework and test preparation is one of the most important responsibilities parents have in their children's education. The state of Texas requires students to either receive their immunizations at school or provide an up to date shot record from a doctor. Parents must provide permission to have shots administered at school. #cmsridernation BAND TWIRL Jasmine Guevara has been chosen as an outstanding CMS band member. Director Christina Smith says that Jasmine is working very hard to learn music and has become a better trumpet player. Jasmine is just a joy to be around. Raylee Wilburn is known for her wonderful disposition. She is dedicated to twirling and works very hard. The twirlers are an integral part of the CMS Spirit Family. Thank you, Raylee for being an exceptional student. CHEER YEARBOOK Esther Mergerson is a team player in all situations. Esther displays exemplary character, and is committed to cheer. She is one girl who can be depended on, no matter what is asked of her. CMS is blessed to have this girl on the 8th grade cheer squad. Mark Perkins has been in Yearbook for two years. He is our 7th grade source of information. He always comes to class with a smile and does anything asked of him. He is enjoying getting to know his 8th period friends and we just love having Mark with us. DANCE Recently, CMS Dance Team went to Nacogdoches to compete in the Pineywoods Dance Competition. They received 2nd place for their pom routine performance. “The girls have worked very hard this year and did a great job at the competition”, says their sponsor, Megan Loftice.
