Student Impact
Many times the news reports
on how terrible the young people are today. They talk about
guns in school, bullies, and violence. The purpose of my story
is to refute the bad news and
recognize the positive on
today’s youth.
The main topic of my story
could be about any of the following at Fannindel High
School: the state recognized
FFA team, the new formed
robotics team, the beta students
that served at the Thanksgiving
luncheon last Friday, or about
the undefeated varsity football
team, or even the undefeated
junior high basketball teams. It
could be that as principal I did
not discipline or rebuke any student this past Friday.
Rather this is my story. A

last Friday. Our health teacher
left the classroom to check on
the situation leaving her 8th
grade class unattended. When
the teacher returned she decided
to watch her students at the window. The students had formed a
circle and were taking turns
praying for the victim on the
care flight, not knowing who the
victim was at the time. After
each student said a prayer, they
all recited the Lord’s Prayer.
I realize this story will not

The students at Fannindel

I still believe in our young

When was the last time you
drove out of town to have a
medical test done? Did you
have to take time off from work
or miss school? If your car gets
15 miles to the gallon and you
pay $2.75 a gallon for gas and
drive 32 miles each way to have
your testing done, it will cost
you $11.74 in just gasoline. If
you make $10.00 per hour and
miss 4 hours of work, that is
another $40.00. Now the cost is
up to $51.74 and you have not
yet counted any actual health
related costs such as your insurance co-payment, deductible, or
other costs you may incur. Well,
let Red River Regional save you
that $51.74 next time you need
to have any diagnostic testing
done!
At Red River Regional you
can schedule your testing just
about any time of the day.
When you make your appointment, tell the registrar when you
would like to come in. If you
tell them you work from 8am to
5pm, and would like to schedule
your X-ray around work hours,
they will in most cases be able
to schedule your appointment
either early in the morning
before 8am or in the evening
after 5pm. When you arrive at
the hospital for you appointment, you will check in with the
registrar in the emergency room
instead of with the registrar in
the lobby. They will be able to
see the test you have scheduled
and notify the technician that
you have arrived. This can be
done for a number of different
tests here at Red River Regional
Hospital. If you need to have
laboratory tests run that do not
require the patient to fast or specific testing that an appointment
is required, just check in at the
ER and the laboratory technician will take care of you.
All of the Technicians at Red
River Regional Hospital are
certified, having met stringent
testing and qualification exams,
background investigations and
additional training in confidentiality and professionalism. You
can be assured you will receive
superior treatment from reliable
trustworthy
professionals.
Now you can use that hour of
driving time thinking about
what to spend the extra $51.74
on.

install a deep lung interlock device on her vehicle,
ordered to pay a fine of $500, restitution of $80, and
$427 in court costs.
Todd Mitchell Prater, 23 of Telephone, pled true to
violations of the terms of his deferred adjudication probation for Assault of a Family Member. On April 4,
2012 Prater pled guilty to the offense of Assault of a
Family Member and was placed on 18 months’ deferred
adjudication, and ordered to pay a fine of $500 and
court costs of $252. Prater failed to pay his fine, court
costs, and supervision fee from April, 2012 to
September, 2012 and failed to perform the additional
terms of obtaining suitable employment and performance of community service hours. Prater was adjudicated and sentenced to 15 days’ confinement.
Kelly Pemberton, 37, of Leonard, pled guilty to the
offenses of Assault Causing Bodily Injury to a Family
Member and Resisting Arrest. On July 7, 2013 Leonard
PD officers responded to a domestic abuse call at 506
S. Poplar. The officers met with Pemberton and his
spouse who reported that an argument took place and
Pemberton became physical causing her pain by pushing her numerous times and at one point holding her by
the neck up against the wall. Pemberton then restrained
his spouse while she lay on the bed and threw her body
against the wall. Pemberton, who smelled of an alcoholic beverage, became defiant when questioned by
disobeying orders to remain outside the home and
pulled away when officers tried to detain him.
Pemberton continued resisting until he was taken to the
ground and after a struggle was eventually handcuffed.
Pemberton was sentenced to 18 months’ probation,
ordered to have no contact with the victim, and ordered
to complete anger management counseling,
Tiffany Lea Riley, 29, of Windom, pled guilty to the
offense of Driving While Intoxicated. On December
12, 2012 Fannin County Sheriff deputies responded to
a rollover accident and found Riley outside the vehicle.
Riley admitted to drinking and after refusing medical
assistance performed poorly on field sobriety tests.
After Riley agreed to provide a blood sample, she was
taken to Red River Regional Hospital and a sample was
taken and sent to the Garland Crime lab for testing. The
results of the testing showed Riley’s BAC to be .147
shortly after her arrest. Riley was convicted and sentenced to 6 months’ probation and ordered to pay a
$1,000 fine and $727 in court costs.
Jason Lee Robison, 32 of Bonham, pled guilty to the
offenses of Theft of Property, Driving While License
Invalid, and Burglary of a Vehicle. On May 18, 2013
Bonham PD officers responded to Bonham High
School regarding a theft call involving a missing watch.
A gold Citizen brand watch that was donated for an
auction at the school was found missing. Several auction workers spotted a large white male, with a possible
first name of “Jason,” near the area the watch was located. On June 22, 2013 Fannin County Sheriff’s deputies
responded to south Savoy to a reported burglary of a
vehicle. They met with a county resident who had three
batteries taken from his tractors. The batteries were last
seen on the tractors on June 14. On June 23 deputies
observed a vehicle on CR 4120, approaching Highway
121, that matched the description of a vehicle involved
in a prowler call the night before. The vehicle was
stopped and the driver was identified as Jason Robison,
whose driver’s license was suspended. Robison was
arrested and bonded out the next day. On June 24, 2013
the deputies made contact with Jan Garza of Jan’s recycling who stated Robison and Alberto Deleon had sold
her the tractor batteries on June 18.
On June 25,
Robison agreed to come to the Sheriff’s Office and was
interviewed regarding the tractor batteries. In a written
statement Robison admitted assisting Alberto Deleon in
taking batteries off of vehicles and A/C units from
abandoned homes. At some point the deputies also
obtained a voluntary statement from Robison in which
he admits to finding a gold watch at the high school and
pawning it for $20. Bonham PD officers confirmed that
Whitlock Pawn had the gold Citizen watch, which
Whitlock Pawn obtained from Jason Robison on May
20 in exchange for $20. Robison was arrested on July
17, 2013 on Bonham PD and Sheriff warrants. Robison
was sentenced to 1 day, 72 days, and 75 days’ confinement respectively, for the offenses, to be served in the
county jail and ordered to pay $761 in court costs and
$377 in restitution.
Tonya Stevenson, 25, of Bonham, pled guilty to the
offense of Fraudulent Destruction, Removal, or
Concealment of a Writing. On July 15, 2013 Bonham
PD officers responded to Wal-Mart regarding a
shoplifting case involving a suspect switching price
tags on items. The Wal-Mart loss prevention officer
detained Stevenson, after he observed her remove the
price tag from a dress costing $14.88 then replace it
with a tag costing $3.88, and then tried to scan the
lower price tag at the self-checkout line. Stevenson was
sentenced to 12 months’ deferred adjudication probation and ordered to pay $500 in fines and $552 in court
costs.
Shelby Titsworth, 18, of Bonham pled guilty to the
offense of Possession of Marijuana. On June 26, 2013,
Titsworth admitted to Bonham PD officers, who were
arresting her on a felony charge, that she had a usable
quantity of marijuana in her bra. Titsworth was convicted and sentenced to 113 days’ confinement in the
county jail and ordered to pay $242 in court costs.
John Phillip Trunzler, Jr., 22, of Ector, pled guilty to
the offense of Possession of Marijuana and pled to violations of his probation for Assault and Driving Without
a Valid License. On August 2, 2011 Trunzler pled
guilty to Assault Causing Bodily Injury. He was placed
on probation for 24 months and ordered to pay restitution to his victim and court costs. On October 12, 2011
Trunzler pled guilty to Driving Without a Valid Driver’s
License. He was placed on probation for 22 months
and ordered to pay court costs. On April 7, 2013
Trunzler was arrested by Fannin County deputies for
disorderly conduct and causing bodily injury to another
while at JC’s Whiskey River. Trunzler also failed to
pay the court costs and restitution for his probation. He
failed to report to his probation officer in December,
February and in most of 2013. On June 14, 2013
Trunzler was picked up by Fannin County Sheriff
deputies on other warrants. At the time of arrest
Trunzler gave consent to be searched which turned up a
bag containing marijuana. Trunzler’s probation was
revoked; he was convicted and sentenced to 50 days’
confinement in the county jail, and ordered to pay
$1,819 in court costs and $1,767 in restitution.
Phillip Paul Wright, 39, of Paris, pled guilty to the
offense of Driving While Intoxicated. On July 4, 2013
Wright was stopped in his vehicle by a Honey Grove
PD officer on Highway 56 after Wright exited a gas station parking lot at 9:55 p.m. without his headlights on.
Wright admitted to drinking and performed poorly on
field sobriety tests. After Wright agreed to provide a
blood sample, he was taken to Red River Regional
Hospital where a sample was taken and sent to the
Garland Crime Lab for testing. The sample was tested
and it showed his BAC to be .246 shortly after his
arrest. Wright was convicted and sentenced to 12
months’ probation and ordered to pay a $1,000 fine and
$427 in court costs.

Dot’s Happy Notes
by: Dorothy Harrison
The best loved spot in the
home for the upcoming season
will probably be the dining
room. I thought of the title of
one of America’s classic movies
starring Sidney Poitier “Guess
Who’s Coming To Dinner”;
(1967). Spenser Tracy and
Katherine Hepburn. The movie
was released December 12,
1967.
As the Thanksgiving and
Christmas season approaches,
many members are returning
home to be with family. The
dining room is a place to
remember all the wonderful
and sharing stories of life. We
offer prayers to the Heavenly
Father for all the blessings He
has bestowed on us. We remember loved ones gone on and welcome all the new additions to
the household.
At our house, prior to getting
everyone seated and settled, we
have to clear the dining table
more for all the covered dishes
that are given as the relatives
arrive. We always have to find
another table somewhere.
Pictures are taken, for it’s amazing to see the bounty continue
to grow. Someone always says
“I know what I was supposed to
being - however I found this
new recipe that I waned to try.”
With all the food, it’s always,
never fails, the children will
ask---can we go to the store to
get something?
TV airs many family shows
around he season. I’m in love
with most, the tear jerkers and a
few musicals. A Charlie Brown
Thanksgiving (1992). The Polar
Express (204), For The Love Of
Benji (1977 - 85), The Little
Drummer Boy (1968), A
Christmas
Carol
(1984),
Scrooge (1970), Miracle on

Sharline Freeman was honored with a birthday lunch
Monday, November 4, 2013. A
group of friends traveled to
Sulphur Springs and ate at the
Bayou Jack Cajun Grill located
on the square. Helping the honoree celebrate were Peggy
Moss, Lois Amundson, Peggy
Sandlin, Lynn Cornitius, Wanda
White, and Toni Woodall. After
they enjoyed a delicious meal,
the group shopped around the
square and even visited the
unusual glass rest rooms located
on the square. Happy Birthday
Sharline!
It was a sad day early
November when Garth (Skip)
Yeager received a message from
Chicago, Illinois that his friend,
Rich Dunlaphad died. Garth
and Rich became very good
friends when they worked
together in education for the
state of Illinois. Rich always
enjoyed his visits every year
with the Yeagers. He also
enjoyed stopping in at the Pecan
Gap Seed House. So long Rich.
We loved you and will miss
you.
Brittany Reel Hunter and
Dustin Hunter welcomed a new
baby girl on November 13,
2013. Emeri LeAnn Hunter
weighed 6lbs. 15oz. and is 18.5
inches long. Mason Hunter is
little Emeri's big brother. Proud
grandparents are Lisa and Carl
Reel. Proud great grandparents
are June Brunson of Cooper and
Gwen Beeler of Pecan Gap.
Be in prayer for Larue
Giddens Salvage of Blue Ridge
as she will be having surgery
Friday. Larue is the sister of Pat
Giddens Grant and Jess
Giddens. Also, keep Bobbie
Manes Beckman in your prayers
as she had 4 bi-pass surgery last
week in Paris. Bobbie lived in
this area years ago and attended
Pecan Gap School during her
earlier years. Continue to keep
Judy Kay and Richard Adams
in your prayers. A praise,
Mamie Olmstead is free of cancer now after many treatments.
Way to go Mamie.
Our sympathy goes to the
family of Jane Taylor who
recently passed away. Jane was
the sister of Helen Decker and
the aunt of Wanda White.
Wanda White cared for her
grandsons, Reagan and Caleb,
in
Rockwall
Wednesday
through Friday of last week.
Their parents, Sara and Jeffery
Kesting, were in St. Louis,
Missouri on business.

Haneke and Wanda White were
hostesses and served delicious
treats. Plans were made for projects and duties for the coming
year and plans were made to
have the annual Christmas
lunch December 12, 2013 at the
Webb Hill Country Club in
Wolfe City.
It was good to have Gary
Don Erwin back in church
Sunday at First Baptist Church
Pecan Gap. Gary Don is finally
getting some strength back after
having surgery and is able to get
out and around. It was good to
have Katy White playing the
organ assisting Nelda on the
piano Sunday at First Baptist.
Katy has been fighting cancer
and is much better now and we
really appreciate her talent.
Ramblings - Happy Thanksgiving
By: Lena Shaw
Our God is an awesome God
who has a sense of humor.
Recently a dog was barking in
the area and a mocking bird
emulated the sound of his voice
for a couple of times (except the
mocking bird sounded better).
Billy Carl Crews is an avid
hunter and awakened at 4:30
one morning to drive to Paris on
a deer hunting expedition. Soon
after he left Betty heard their
watchdog bark and when she
investigated saw a deer in their
yard.
During the weekend Billy
Carl and Betty drove to Austin
to visit with their daughter
Bettina who teaches special
education at a school there.
They enjoyed being there and
Bettina drove them around to
show them the beautiful sights
of Austin.
The Richardson girls from
Pecan Gap are retiring this year,
Mary Richardson Ford will
retire after 30 years on the job
and Betty Richardson Crews
will retire from TAMU-C. Their
sister, Sarah Richardson Rhea,
has been retired for some time.
Congratulations to Scott
Hulsey who is now employed at
KTEN in Sherman. He is the
son of Greg and Alicia Hulsey
of Commerce and the grandson
of Tom and Oma Hulsey of
Ladonia.
Tommy and Loretta Oliver
will be honored on their Golden
Wedding Anniversary at First
Baptist Church in Windom
November 30th by their sons
and wives, Lance and Tracie
Oliver and Brad and Leslie
Oliver. Best wishes for many
more years of happiness together, Tommy and Loretta.
Casey Crumb is in the
Marines and is stationed in
Australia. His unit was scheduled to go to the Philippines to
help with the clean up there, but
he found that that order had
been rescinded and he will get
to come home on leave during
the Christmas season to be with
his family. His brother Chris
works two jobs in San Marcos
and will be able to have only
two days off to be home.
Everyone is so proud of the
young Falcon football team.
According to descriptions of the
last play of the bi-district game,
it must have been really exciting
and now the Falcons are 11-0,
have won bi-district, and will
advance
to
area
play.
Congratulations, young men,
coaches and fans. Friday night
they will be playing the Aquilla
Cougars at Trinidad.
Mark Conley is justifiably
proud of the Carmine Cubettes
volleyball team. Once again
they have won and are champions. Mark and Linda’s daughter,
Brook is a member of that team.
Victoria Kant has always
kept a watchful eye on her
younger siblings and is especially close to her brother
William who is in the armed
services.
Please keep Fern and Vernon
Hill in your prayers. In a fall at
home Fern sustained a badly
broken leg and has been hospitalized but is at home now and
cannot put any weight on the leg
that was broken. The recovery
period will be painful.
Also please keep Melissa
Phillips in your prayers. She is
now taking radiation, and that is
as painful as the chemo treatments. She has a fighting spirit
so pray that she will soon be in
remission.
Sympathy is extended to
Nelda Campbell in the recent
loss of her husband, James
Campbell. Mr. Campbell served
his community well and will be
missed.
Ruby Craig, a long time resident of Ladonia who has lived
in the Honey Grove Nursing
Center for some time, passed
away Saturday night. Services
are pending at Cooper Sorrells
Funeral Home. Her nephew has
to travel from another state and
will make the arrangements.
Please continue to pray for
Sarah and Gene Rhea as Sarah’s
back problems have come back
and Gene is scheduled for sur-
gery on his foot in the near
future.
Birthday geetings on Nov.
23rd to Jeanette Duncan, Larry
McNeill, Jacob Beeler, Faye

I ASKED GOD...
By: Reuben Trussell, Pecan Gap
Jimmy is driving along a
highway and sees a rabbit jump
out across the middle of the
road. He swerves to avoid hitting it, but unfortunately the
rabbit jumps right in front of the
car. Being a sensitive man as
well as an animal lover, he pulls
over and gets out to see what
has become of the rabbit. Much
to his dismay, the rabbit is dead.
Jimmy feels so awful that he
begins to cry.
June comes along, driving
down the highway and sees
Jimmy crying on the side of the
road and pulls over. She steps
out of the car and asks him
what's wrong. "I feel terrible,"!
Jimmy explains, "I accidentally
hit this rabbit and killed it."
June says, "Don't worry." She
runs to her car and pulls out a
spray can. She walks over to
the limp, dead rabbit, bends
down, and sprays the contents
onto the rabbit.
The rabbit
jumps up, waves its paw at the
two of them and hops off down
the road. Ten feet away the rabbit stops, turns around and
waves again, he hops down the
road another 10 feet, turns and
waves, hops another
ten feet, turns and
waves, and repeats
this again and again
and again, until he
hops out of sight.
Jimmy is astonished.
He runs over to June
and demands, "What
is in that can? What
did you spray on that
rabbit?" June turns
the can around so that
the man can read the label. It
says: "Hair Spray - Restores
life to dead hair, and adds permanent wave."
Continuing in Prayer
And in the same way the Spirit
also helps our weaknesses; for
we do not know how to pray as
we should, but the Spirit
Himself intercedes for us with
groanings too deep for words;
and He who searches the hearts
knows what the mind of the
Spirit is, because He intercedes
for the saints according to the
will of God. Romans 8:26-27.
Do you ever feel like you don’t
know how to pray? We have the
wonderful promise that when
we pray, the Holy Spirit intercedes for us according to the
will of God.
I Asked God
I asked God to take away my
pride. God said, "No. It is not
for me to take away, but for you
to give it up."
I asked God to make my
handicapped child whole. God
said, "No. Her spirit is whole,
her body is only temporary."
I asked God to grant me
patience.
God said, "No.
Patience is a by-product of
tribulations; it isn’t granted, it is
earned."
I asked God to give me happiness. God said, "No. I give
you blessings, happiness is up to
you."
I asked God to spare me
pain. God said, "No. Suffering
draws you apart from worldly
cares and brings you closer to
me."
I asked God to make my spirit grow. God said, "No. You
must grow on your own, but I
will prune you to make you
fruitful."
I asked God for all things
that I might enjoy life. God
said, "No. I will give you life so
that you may enjoy all things."
I asked God to help me
LOVE others, as much as God
loves me. God said..."Ahhhh...
Finally you have the idea!"
Author unknown
If God doesn’t give us what
we ask for when we pray, we
can be assured that He has
something better for us. He
only gives us what is best for us.
He never gives us our requests if
they would not be good for us.
God is so good. Give Him
thanks today.

Wesley Earl Verner
On June 12, 2013 the Gates
of Heaven opened wide to welcome the Gentle Giant known
as “Big Wes”. He passed away
at home with family and friends
by his side.
Born on March 2, 1948 he
proudly boasted he was a Texas
Independence
Baby.
On
October 21, 1978 he married
Rose Marie. He often referred
to her as his very own Yellow
Rose of Texas. He was Texas
Proud!
1968 - 1971 he attended
Angelo State on an athletic
scholarship. He earned a degree
in Physical Education and a
minor in English. He coached in
ElDorado
for
2
years,
Basketball, Baseball, Football,
Track and Golf. He taught golf
before he ever played the game.
Continued to play for 41 years.
Joined Cedar Creek Country
Club in 1980. Served as MGA
President 2004-2012. His Ram
Teammates became a true
brother hood. They still gather
yearly in San Saba, Texas to
reconnect and relive past victories and even the losses. Their
coach Phil George joins them
and has stated this team of men
was like no other he ever
coached - a true brotherhood.
Wesley was Baptized at the
age of 39. He became an active
member of First Baptist Church
Dallas. Not much off a singer,
he found a way to join Rose
Marie as a vital part of the
Sanctuary Choir. He will best be
remembered as the “Gold King”
in numerous Easter and
Christmas Pageants.
In 1989 he was asked to play
the role of Simon Peter in the
Easter Pageant performed at the
Dallas Apparel Mart. With
much coaching he learned his
lines and role as the Galilean
fisherman....though it was with
a West Texas accent.
In 2004 Wes stuffered a
stroke. He worked hard to
regain all that the stroke took
from him. In 2010 he suffered a
heart attack and even managed
a fair recovery from that. June
of 2012 he received his final
challenge ‘cancer’. He fought
the Good Fight for many
months but when the medica-
tion had no effect on the cancer
he chose quality of life over
quantity of life and stopped all
treatment. December 2012 he
enrolled in Hospice. He chose
VNA Kaufman as his final care
givers. This organization helped
him live every day with dignity
and courage. Cheered him on as
he set about completing his
‘bucket list’, he was pain free to
the very end. As he prepared to
sleep in the Hospice bed for the
first night we discussed this is
not the bed you die in. This is
the bed you go to Heaven from.
Surviving are his wife of 34
years, Rose Marie Verner, his 4
legged daughter, Mya age 13,
father and his wife, John and
Shirley Verner of Cumby,
Texas, four brothers and wives,
Ray and Pat Verner of Broken
Arrow, OK, Randy and Nan
Verner of Mt. Pleasant, TX,
Gary and Donna Verner of
Rowlett, TX, John
and
Michelle Verner of Sulphur
Springs, TX, four sisters and
husbands, Melinda and Steve
Manley of Cumby, TX, Virginia
and Gary Hurse of Lovington,
NM, Debbie and Gary Nichols
of Ladonia, TX, Nancy and
Robert Lake of Greenville, TX,
one aunt, Rebecca Hester,
Ladonia, TX, nine nieces, 14
nephews, numerous greatnieces, great-nephews and
many longtime friends.
He was preceded in death by
his mother, Virginia Ruth
Bartley Verner of Ladonia, TX,
grandparents, E.E. and Virgie
Bartley and Carl and Leona
Verner also of Ladonia, TX.
Also preceded in death by his 4legged children Fannie Mae,
June Bug, Bubby, Texanna and
Amigo.
It was shared at his mother’s
funeral in December 2004 that
out of 9 children her favorite
was the one she was with.
Presently Wesley is that favorite
child as he is in Heaven with
her.
His ashes will be interned on
November 28th at 4 p.m. at
Providence Cemetery on Farm
Road 1550. Family and friends
are welcome to come and share
this special moment.
