Calendar of Events Fall 2013–Winter 2014 Victor Chu EXHIBITIONS & SPECIAL EVENTS Albert Camus wrote, “Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower.” Indeed, this can be witnessed all across the Garden’s historic landscape, home to our 30,000 magnificent trees. And then there are 50 beautiful display gardens, large and small, including the fall-flowering Native Plant Garden, and special collections such as the roses, which are amazing from September through late fall. Please come to enjoy all of this on your own anytime, and don’t miss special seasonal programs that feature walks and talks, cooking and home gardening demonstrations, harvest activities, and much more. Our spectacular autumn is followed by a beloved New York tradition: the Garden’s Holiday Train Show. Inspired by the historic ginkgo that has thrived in London’s Kew Gardens since the 1760s, Professor Peter Crane will discuss the history of ginkgo from its mysterious origin through its proliferation, drastic decline, and ultimate resurgence. He will also highlight the cultural and social significance of ginkgo: its medicinal and nutritional uses, its power as a source of artistic and religious inspiration, and its importance as one of the world’s most popular street trees, as explored in his new book, Ginkgo: The Tree That Time Forgot, released in March 2013. Professor Crane, Distinguished Counsellor to the Board of The New York Botanical Garden, is Carl W. Knobloch, Jr. Dean and Professor of Botany at the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. His work focuses on the diversity of plant life: its origin and fossil history, current status, and conservation and use. From 1992 to 1999 he was director of the Field Museum in Chicago and from 1999 to 2006 he was director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.
