THE PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
TICA President Vickie Fisher

Another fall of membership
balloting is over, leaving TICA
with some new rules and new
Regional Directors. Thanks to all
who participated in the voting as
this is a very important right you
receive as a member of TICA.
I know that when I first started
in the cat fancy and joined TICA,
voting and the Board of Directors
were personally not important to
me. But as the years have passed,
I have become to realize how
important it is for all of our
members to participate in this
process.
Our dilemma is that we hate
change and love it at the same
time; what we really want is for
things to remain the same but get
better. - Sydney J. Harris,
Journalist
The truth of the matter is that
we will constantly face change
and the only way TICA can even
hope to figure out how to make
things “get better” is for you to let
your wishes be known. While we
are all joined by our love of cats,
we are a group of very

different people. We are
separated by geography and
sometimes language, customs,
age, education, profession and
values. Some of us live in areas
where the cat fancy has been an
accepted hobby for many years.
Others live in areas where the
development of a cat fancy hobby
is an exciting goal. Some of us
know what dial phones, Brownie
cameras, and “correcting”
Selectrics all look like and others
were born into the age of
automation. We each have
different perceptions of what
needs to be changed (or not), our
comfort level with that change
and how quickly it happens. We
often face different challenges in
being able to enjoy our hobby.
This is YOUR hobby, your
association. You have the power
to shape it through your vote and
your voice. When your Regional
Director comes to a Board
Meeting, he or she is bringing a
perspective of what TICA can do
to make things “get better.” With
every Regional Director at the
Board table with their background,
knowledge and this perspective,
we can hope for rich discussion
and decisions which guide TICA
on the best path.
So, if voting and Regional
Directors haven’t been important
to you, I challenge you to get
involved! The membership ballot
won’t be presented until Fall, but
it’s never too early to meet your
Regional Director.

THE COOKIE JAR THAT STARTED IT ALL!
By Clint Knapp
Everyone thought it was great and it
held a prominent space in the kitchen.
That should have been the end of it.
As some people know, I have a little side hobby that
was spawned by my life with the cats:
“I collect cat cookie jars.”
Over the years I have accumulated
twenty-five cookie jars. My criteria
are simple. First, it must be a
COOKIE JAR. Candy dishes, bowls,
canisters and other such items just
don’t cut it.
Second, it needs
to be a cat cookie jar
or, at least, have a
cat on it. I have had
people show me
cookie jars with
other animals on
them such as dogs
or bears or cows. All were very nice
but they weren’t cats.
So, how did I get started with this
little obsession? I
can’t give an exact
date, but it was probably about fifteen
or sixteen years ago. I was at the mall
doing some Christmas shopping and
saw this cookie jar. It was a cat on its
back holding a fish bowl. I thought it
was really cute so I bought it.
10
TICA™ TREND
However, I was at a cat show a
short time later and there were three
cookie jars at the raffle table! I got
tickets for all three but only won one.
After some negotiating (and pouting)
the woman who won the other two
agreed to sell me one of them, so I went home with two
cookie jars.
Now I had a collection!
Where do I find all of these cookie
jars you ask? Flea markets, yard sales,
stores and web sites are all sources.
However, cat show raffle tables are
still where I find most of my treasure.
Whenever I’m at a show, I look for the
raffle table and if there’s a cat cookie
jar there, you know that I will be
bidding on it. “I just won another
cookie jar!” I would text my wife.
“Oh yay” she would text back with, I
suspect, more
sarcasm than
enthusiasm. But,
despite all of her
eye rolling, when
she is at a show
that I’m not able to
attend, if she sees a cookie jar, she
bids on it and has brought back more
than a few. Now that’s love. I also
have friends who are on the lookout
for them. One show was next to an
antique mall. I went up and down the
aisles but came up empty. Sure, there
were cookie jars but none with cats. A
little while later I received a text from
my friend Bob who was still looking
February/March 2014 * Volume 35, No. 2
around the mall. “Look what I found”
and attached was a picture of a cat
cookie jar! He told me where it was and
I went back and snapped it up.
Displaying these items while sharing
our house with cats can be a
bit of a challenge. For one thing, unlike
some little knick-knacks that people
collect, cookie jars
take up a certain amount of room. You
can’t just stick twenty-five of them in a
curio cabinet. Put a few on your
counter or a table and there’s not much
room for anything else. Also, they are
breakable; a fact that most cats don’t
really respect. Yes, there have been a
few casualties. However, I believe I
have found areas that are impervious to
even the most resourceful feline. Butter-fingered spouses,
on the other hand, present a different challenge. One day, I
walked into the kitchen to find one of the cookie jars on the
counter. “What’s that doing there?” I asked my wife. “If
we are going to have all of these cookie jars we can at least
use one for actual cookies” she said. She lifted the lid to
show me at which point it promptly slipped out of her hand
and onto the top of the jar, breaking off two big pieces.
Needless to say, the cookies came out. I managed to put
the jar back together with a little super glue and got a
promise out of my wife to look but not touch.
So that’s my story. Some people have suggested
therapy, but I feel that I can manage my compulsion.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Anyway, if you’re a cat cookie jar out there and
you’re looking for a home, fear not. I will find you.
It’s my mission.

IW SGCA KELLOGGS HIT THE LIGHTS
OF SAMPHIRE
Breeders: Heinrich and Carly Kellogg
Owners: Heinrich and Carly Kellogg/C. Schofield
Region: Northwest
Kelloggs Hit The Lights (a.k.a. Larseboy)
By “Poppy” Schofield
This story started several years ago. Through the crowds
at a CFA show, I glimpsed an exquisite looking Black
Silver Classic Tabby American Shorthair on the judge's
table. I followed his owners and breeders, Carly and
Heinrich Kellogg, back to their benching area, introduced
myself, and put in an order for a big alter boy "just like
that one". In next to no time, I had a Kelloggs kitten to
show, and she did well (TICA's best kitten in the 20072008 season). Alas, the kitten was a girl and destined for
their breeding program. She produced some fine kittens,
all girls, including TICA's best kitten in the 2009-2010
season. Where were the boys?
One day Carly called -- "I think your boy might be here.
Why don't you come and meet him on the weekend?"
It was love first sight. For such a young man, he had
beautiful colour, contrast and pattern. He had a sweet face
with an open expression and an outgoing personality.
Yes, this was my boy and he needed a special name.
His dad is "American Soldier" and mum is "For Whom
The Bell Tolls". I searched the 'net and learned more than
I ever wanted to know about the US military and Ernest
Hemmingway! Heinrich stepped in and steered me in the
right direction -- these were song titles. One (dad) from a
Queensryche album and the other (mum) from a
Metallica album and his name had to follow the musical
tradition. Now I know more than I ever wanted to know
about Heavy Metal music! The first song on the
Metallica album "Kill 'Em All" is "Hit The Lights",
written by Lars Ulrich. We had it! Kelloggs Hit The
Lights of Samphire, a.k.a. Larseboy.

TICA™ TREND
My broken leg followed by accident in which my car was
"totalled" (I was the innocent party!) brought his kitten
career to an abrupt end.
His first year as an alter wasn't much better. He picked up
a mysterious bug (we still don't know what it was) which
kept him out of the show ring. Once better, he managed
to injure his ear. Special thanks go to Dr David Marlow
BVMS MRCVS and his team at the Brookswood
Vetinerary Hospital in Langley, British Columbia,
Canada for being there for us and understanding my
paranoia! Would he ever get well? Would I ever be able
to show this beauty?
The 2012-2013 season started well. He immediately hit
the top of the Alter leader board. Every time the standings
were updated I was amazed to see he was still there, as
the alter class quality was incredible. He loved to travel
(what a blessing!) and was a ham in the ring. He
maintained his dignity while showing off to the
spectators.

At the Annual Awards ceremony I was filled with
emotion when we took Larseboy, all dressed up in his
best bib and tucker, to pick up his award: TICA's 2012
-2013 Alter Of The Year.
I write this tribute to not only my wonderful Lars with his
stunning looks, winning ways and love of life, but to all
those in TICA who helped and encouraged us on our
journey, especially:
All the show committee members who work
diligently behind the scenes, to give us
exhibitors a place to have fun and showcase
our kitties.
The judges who have the pleasure of handling so
many fabulous felines but are faced with
the difficult decision of choosing the
finalists.
The ring staff, clerks and stewards.
The folks who chauffeured us around.
Fellow exhibitors who gave support and
friendship.
Finally, I send my gratitude to Carly and Heinrich
Kellogg for entrusting me with a very special feline
gentleman, my buddy Larseboy.

CAMEO
A Tribute and Farewell
By Sharon Faye Wilbur
Cameo was born on Sept. 20,
1992. I got her in January 1993 at
a cat show in Texas. She was four
months old and I could hold her in
the palm of my hand. Cameo was
my beautiful tortoiseshell pet
Manx. She ruled my two American
Curls.
Cameo never liked to show. As soon as she got her highest title – Supreme Grand Master
– in The International Cat Association, I retired her. The last three or four years of her life she
became my Velcro cat. She always kept me in her dim eyesight. She was always in my lap.
She would sleep with and on me.
I knew that she had heart problems. She also had high blood pressure. My vet said that
those may have triggered her two days of seizures on Monday and Tuesday. Tuesday,
November 12, 2013 at noon, came too soon for her to cross the Rainbow Bridge. I had her
euthanized and cremated. I know that she is at peace, free from pain, and playing at the feet of
God.
RASCAL
Tribute and Farewell
By Sharon Faye Wilbur
Celticurl’s Lil Rascal was was born on
Jan. 23, 1992. I first saw him at a TICA cat show
in Fort Worth, TX and met his breeder Karen
O’Brien in Sept. 1992. Karen mentored me as I
was showing Rascal in TICA. Rascal was Best
American Curl Longhair Alter in TICA in 1993. He became a QGCA in TICA. He was a
good ambassador for the Curls during the years that my work took me from Army town/Post
to Army town/Post as I was an Army librarian.
As I joined different organizations, he became my show and tell at meetings. With his
curled ears, silky blue coat, and marvelous disposition, Rascal would sit there and enjoy the
attention. Rascal did not like to be cuddled but he always wanted to be near me. I retired in
1999 and moved back to Texas.
His companion, my SGM Cameo missed him until her death in 2013. They always slept
together beside me on the bed. Monday, April 21, 2008, came too soon for him to cross the
Rainbow Bridge. He is at peace and playing with Cameo.

“WHAT’S ONE WEEK?”
CONFESSIONS OF A RELUCTANT FOSER PARENT
Article and Photos By Cimeron Morrissey
“WHY IS OUR BATHROOM MEOWING?”….
my husband asked when he
came home from a trip. I
retrieved the culprit — Joey,
the most outgoing and talkative
of the three rescued kittens —
and placed the tiny orange fuzz
ball in John’s arms. Joey turned
on the charm and his motorboat
purr, which was much bigger
than his skinny little 4-week

“Don’t worry. Another

right?” I said, utterly
unconvincingly.
Resistance Is Futile

FOSTER CARE
Sometimes, a week is the difference
between life and death.
My reasons for refusing to foster suddenly
seemed so trivial and quickly transformed into a
plea to the heavens to help us find the orphans.
Those prayers were soon answered when a catloving city employee, Frank Sanchez, spotted
Annette’s kittens in a remote corner of a nearby
maintenance yard behind a locked gate. I rushed
out and, with shaking hands, I caught the tiny 4week-olds one by one: two red tabbies and a
fluffy gray boy.
“What’s going to happen to them now?” Frank
asked. With relief and without hesitation, I said,
“I’m fostering them.”
Separation Anxiety
It didn’t take long to become attached to
the kittens. The days they spent without
their mother made them hunger not just for
food, but also for affection. They were all
over me! Walter, the gray puffball, was all
about playing. Gregarious Joey wanted to
experience everything and talk about it with
me — I fell for him the hardest. And
Frankie just wanted to snuggle all the time. I
was all over them, too: tickling their sweet
little paws, introducing them to the
wonderful world of toys, kissing them
constantly and thanking the heavens that
they were alive. I couldn’t even put them
down when they were being examined by
Project Bay Cat’s veterinarian, the
wonderful Dr. Lloyd Wilson of Crystal
Springs Pet Hospital. He declared them all
to be in perfect health and didn’t even make
fun of me for clinging to them throughout
the exam.
I couldn’t believe how overwhelmingly
satisfying it was to help the kittens forget
that they were orphans. Fostering was
supposed to be all about them, but I got
something out of it, too. I got to watch them
experience the joys of being happy, playful,
well-loved, carefree kittens with full bellies
and bright futures.
When the seven days were up and I left
them in the capable, loving hands of their
new foster mom, I wept like a baby; and
again when Walter and Frankie got adopted;
and again when Dr. Wilson and his wife
Bonnie decided to adopt Joey and reassured
me I could visit him at the hospital
whenever I wanted.
While hugging me and wiping away my
happy tears, my husband mimicked me
playfully in a high-pitched voice: “What’s
one week?” Now I know the answer: It’s a
chance to transform a tragic situation into an
incredibly happy ending for tiny furry souls.
It’s seven smile-filled days of marveling at their
little triumphs and discoveries. It’s constantly
laughing at them air-kneading in their sleep,
somersaulting over each other to the food bowl
and their “ferocious” and clumsy attempts to
pounce on each other. And sometimes, a week is
the difference between life and death.

JOEY WITH HIS LITTERMATES
“THERE ARE THOUSANDS” of deserving rescued kittens
like Joey, Walter and Frankie whose survival depends on
having a home-between-homes. A week in foster care can save
their lives, but there are more kittens in need than there are
foster homes. To become a foster parent for homeless kittens,
go to Petfinder.com to find a rescue group or shelter near you.

the lesions. There are many different ways to approach
treatment. If you think about ringworm in the same
way as athletes foot, it seems less scary. There are
several topical ointments you can use, such as
Lotramin ringworm ointment. Your vet can provide
your pet with oral medication or sulphur dips. Using
Advantage for two months will also kill the
fungus. You may also want to spray cat trees, etc with
a bleach and water blend and wash all cat beds and
other bedding in hot water to kill those pesky little cells
that tend to hang around for months, just waiting for
an unsuspecting victim they can attach themselves to.
The most important thing is to remember that it takes
four to six weeks to be completely rid of the fungus but
most treatments insure that it is no longer contagious
after about a week or two of treatment. It is a

this in the future ?
Signed. Frantic
Dear Frantic,
This is a problem that many people don't think about
until it happens to them and it's too late. Your kitten is
very lucky you were home. One easy solution is to take
pillow cases and put them over the chair backs
whenever you have kittens, until they are bigger. If
you sew, you can make them to their exact size and
coordinate them with your decor. They can make a
room very festive. Happy decorating!!
Dear Tabby,
We recently got a kitten from a very reputable breeder.
After a week of being here, we noticed some of his fur
had started to disappear. Turns out he has
ringworm. What exactly is ringworm?
Signed, Worm Hater
Dear Worm Hater,
Fear not. Ringworm is not actually a worm and can be
quite common, especially in the warmer states. It is a
fungus that grows in hot and damp areas. There are
many times the human contracts it in the woods and
brings it home to their animals. If there's a dog in the
house that goes out regularly in the woods, they can
also bring it home and share it with the household. To
further complicate things, the "host " might never
actually break out with the fungus. Those with really
good immune systems seem to escape it. That's why it's
usually kittens, puppies, children and those with
compromised immune systems that will end up with

In the Dec/Jan 2014 Issue of the TREND, mention was
made of a product called “Stop-It” for ring worm.
You can find this product at the following link:
http://www.jkatinc.com/
"Stop It" is DioxiGuard 72 PLUS and is listed at the
bottom of the page on the JKATinc. web site.
http://www.jkatinc.com/page14.html
DioxiGuard 72 PLUS kills ringworm spores on contact
and the "Stop It" 2 oz. bottles were created for a TICA
show in GA to acquaint exhibitors with the product. A
breeder/customer suggested an easier name (Stop It) so
people could remember it. She was right.
Stop It and DioxiGuard 72 PLUS are the same product
just different sizes.

OBSERVATION AT A CAT SHOW
By Serina Stacholy, Junior Exhibitor
Atlanta FantasTICAts
At the Atlanta show on April 14-15th this past year, I
witnessed something that I will never forget. The Bengal
Congress was the last ring on Saturday. When our cat did
not final, I was not jealous at those whose cats did final,
but I was happy to see their success. As I watched the
awards/finals, I had a feeling who would be the Best Cat
in the Bengal Congress. When it came down to the top
two cats and my friend’s cat, Avenir Mardi Gras of
Belrouge was awarded the “Best Cat”, I could only feel
joy and excitement for my friends Madison, Morgan, and
Alisa Coffey at Belrouge Bengals because their cat
supremed at the congress.
I wish I could have gotten a picture of my friend’s,
Madison, face when she saw Judge Kim Tomlin hang the
“Best Cat” ribbon on Mardi’s cage. Her expression was
priceless. I am so happy that Mardi supremed because I
have watched him grow both in the show hall and outside
of the show hall. I’ve played with Mardi at his house
before; I am happy for my friends. Mardi is the first
Belrouge cat to supreme, so this is extra special for his
family.
Madison and I have been friends for a while and met
through cats, so we have a hobby we can both do together
including the Junior Exhibitor Program. Madison wants to
advance beyond the Junior Exhibitor Program and
become a judge and so this completed one of the
requirements. I am so proud of Mardi, Madison, Morgan,
and Alisa that all I want to do is wish them the best of
luck as we continue to show our Bengals together!
Congratulations SGC Avenir Mardi Gras of Belrouge.

Something Great
for TICA Judge Trainees
To Protect Their
Important Papers
This is a fantastic plastic cover/case for protecting your
important paperwork. It is rigid and strong so it looks after
your Trainee book or other papers really well. No danger of
your book being ruined by spillage. There are good strong
clips on the side, and its an A4 size so it slips into your bag.
Very cheap and a definite great investment.
If you need one and can’t find it at your local office supply

CORPORATE PARTNERS:
PRECIOUS CAT LITTER
MEET KATHY &
DR. BRUCE ELSEY
Helping Others is Their Business: Precious Cat
Generates Precious Funds to Accelerate a Cure for
Cancer
Precious Cat founders Kathy and Bruce Elsey have
made it their business to help others—literally!
Drawing on a unique business model, the Colorado
couple created a perfect way to share their success with
the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF)
and myeloma patients everywhere.
The public knows veterinarian Bruce Elsey as the
name behind "Dr. Elsey’s Precious Cat" products,
which include a range of intelligent cat litter items
targeting specific feline needs. Founded in 1998,
Precious Cat combined Dr. Elsey’s extensive
knowledge of feline behavior with Kathy Elsey’s
determination to see things through. Working together,
they created a company that provides quality cat litters
that helps cats live happier, healthier lives.
When Kathy Elsey was diagnosed with multiple
myeloma in 2009, the Elsey’s
wanted to do everything they
could to attain a cure. It did not
take the couple long to
understand the singular focus
and tremendous value of the
MMRF mission and to become
actively involved through
generous contributions. As part
of this transformative
commitment, they sought creative ways to effectively
channel their ongoing assistance and simultaneously
inspire as many others as possible to get involved.
The answer came in the creation of a collaborative
business model that supports the MMRF by matching a
portion of purchases by supporters towards curing
cancer. Through their generous contribution and this
creative model, the Elsey’s and Precious Cat have
funded nearly $6 million for discovering and advancing
new drugs to help cancer patients. 2013 marks the third
year of this collaboration and kicked off with a new $3
donation program for Precious Cat customers. From
October 1, 2013 to February 28, 2014, Precious Cat not
only gave customers a $3 dollar discount on Precious
Cat Ultra, but made a $3 donation to the MMRF.
Through their unique business model the Elsey’s
hope to inspire other individuals and companies to
initiate similar programs. By utilizing this approach,
the Elsey’s and Precious Cat not only generate muchneeded funding, but help to educate the public about
the vital mission of the MMRF—to drive research and
drug breakthroughs in myeloma faster, to promote
much-needed collaboration between industry and
academia, and to empower patients in helping reach a
cure.
"Giving hope through prayer and action"
- Bruce & Kathy Elsey
As the Elsey’s demonstrate, opportunities abound for
other entrepreneurs to combine their passion and business
acumen to help fund a vital cause like cancer research, and
ultimately find a cure, through the
MMRF.

WHAT MAKES TICA DIFFERENT?
The International Cat Association (TICA) has thousands of members
and hundreds of clubs around the world in Latin America, North
America, Asia, and Europe that host cat shows all year.
A genetic registry, TICA allows new cat breeds such as the Savannah,
the world's favorite breed of cat the Bengal, and the Thai cat. Fifty five
breeds of cats from the Russian Blue to LaPerm, Sphynx to Norwegian
Forest Cat compete for titles and regional and international awards.
TICA also was the first cat--and now the world's largest--registry to allow
household cats and household kittens to compete for the same titles at
cat shows and awards as pedigreed cats.
BORN TO BE A CAT JUDGE
TICA cat shows are fun. TICA cats are fabulous. And TICA members
including junior cat exhibitors are friendly. The cat fancy and cat fanciers
are all cat owners and cat lovers. Cat kids get to learn the ropes through
our junior exhibitor program and new cattery breeders can learn more
through TICA mentorship programs.
