had vehicles crossing in front and behind me while
in the crosswalk at the Health Clinic. This morning
the vehicles were close and going very fast. I have
reported this problem before and the issue becomes
more dangerous as it becomes darker in the morning
and afternoons.
Please do not wait for a fatality before any corrective action is taken.

We have recognized this intersection is problematic
and have taken steps to correct and improve traffic
design and functionality.
There is a project specifically for this intersection
at DPW slated for funding in FY16 that will improve
the intersection as well as the road structure in all
four directions. It is a function of law enforcement
to correct speed violators and anything deemed as
unsafe driving.
If your personnel annotate the license number,
DES has the capability to track and notify offenders
as needed.

and should not have to pay out of pocket for access
to training facilities.

Army offers legal
Domestic violence awareness
education program is everyone’s responsibility
U.S. Army Europe Office of the Judge
Advocate General
The Office of The Judge Advocate General is now
accepting applications for the Army’s Funded Legal
Education Program. Under this program, the Army
projects sending up to 25 active duty commissioned
officers to law school at government expense. Selected
officers will attend law school beginning the fall of
2016 and will remain on active duty while attending
law school.
lnterested officers should review Army MILPER
Message 15-013 and Chapter 14, AR 27-1 (The Judge
Advocate General’s Funded Legal Education Program)
to determine their eligibility. This program is open to
commissioned officers in the rank of second lieutenant
through captain. Applicants must have at least two, but
not more than six, years of total active federal service
at the time legal training begins. Eligibility is governed
by statute (10 U.S.C. 2OO4) and is non-waivable.
Eligible officers interested in applying should
immediately register for the earliest offering of the
Law School Admission Test. Applicants must send
their request through command channels, to include the
officer’s branch manager at AHRC, send the original
application to the Office of The Judge Advocate General,
ATTN: DAJA-PT (Yvonne Caron-Rm 28,517), 2200
Army Pentagon, Washington, D.C. 20310, to be received
by November 2015. Submission of the application well
in advance of the deadline is advised.

Awareness Month. Domestic violence impacts one in four women
in the United States, according to
the Centers for Disease Control,
while it impacts one in seven
men. Domestic Violence knows
no bounds, no matter what rank/
grade, education level, job function, race or religion you are — it
can impact you or your loved ones.
The ACS Family Advocacy
Program is hosting a variety
of events around the garrison
to promote Domestic Violence
Awareness Month. These events
are geared toward all service members, civilians and their Families.
On Oct. 1 at 6:45 p.m., Army
Community Service will hold a
candlelight vigil on the lawn of the
Clay Kaserne Chapel. The event
is co-sponsored by the chaplains
and Army Community Service.
The candlelight vigil is a
family-friendly, communitywide
event, honoring victims of domes-
tic violence and building awareness around the world. A poem,
proclamation and message of hope
will be shared by the chaplains and
the Garrison Commander. Light
refreshments will be provided.
The ScreamFree Marriage
seminar will be hosted Oct. 7-8
at ACS from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in
the training room at Texasstrasse
57. The ScreamFree series seeks
to improve communication between couples through positive
communication methods, sans
screaming. Free childcare is
available but spots are limited to
those who register through ACS
and Child, Youth and School Services. Please call ACS at (0611)

soon as possible.
During the month, ACS will
be handing out battery-operated
candles to commands and management around the installation.
This is the “light the way” initiative, encouraging awareness of
Domestic Violence.

Football, soccer, ‘The Beautiful Game’

Often referred to as “The Beautiful Game,” it is
a leveler of men and women from all walks of life.
Working class to upper class, male or female, rich to
poor, no matter your country, race or religion, it has
brought the world together.
The FIFA world cup is the biggest single event
sporting competition in the world; up to 715 million people tune in to watch soccer being played by
competing nations.
Whilst it can be regarded as an emerging game in
the U.S., soccer — or “football” — in Europe is the
main sport. Europe hosts some of the biggest soccer
competitions in the game ,including the most valuable
domestic competitions such as the English Premier
League or the German Bundesliga.
While Americans and Germans share many similarities and traditions, they do not share many sports.
One that we do is soccer and through this medium we
have the opportunity to demonstrate our friendship.
It started more than three months ago. Preparation up to three times a week, strengthening fitness,
skills and tactical awareness, all for this one game
where the Wiesbaden Garrison took on the City of
Wiesbaden in an annual friendship soccer match. In
its fifth year it was the first time the game had been
played on Clay Kaserne using the new soccer facilities
in Newman Village.

USAREUR extends benefits to samesex spouses in Germany

Effective Sept. 9, 2015, U.S. Army Europe is
authorized to issue Status of Forces Agreement
credentials and command sponsorship authorizations — including overseas benefits, entitlements
and allowances — to eligible same-sex spouses
assigned to or on orders to Germany. The change is
in accordance with USAREUR Message #1509028.

ACP drop arm safety notice
There continues to be a problem with vehicles
striking the drop arms, or the drop arms striking
vehicles, at the Clay Kaserne Access Control
Point. These incidents are avoidable and only
happen because either the driver fails to stop for
the red light at the drop arm, or because the driver
is speeding through the ACP and fails to stop for
the red light at the drop arm. The drop arms are
programmed so that the traffic light will turn red
before the drop arm starts moving. Once the light
turns red the cycle cannot be interrupted and the
drop arm will go down, regardless if there is a
vehicle in the way.
The drop arm cycle will not start if the light is
green and vehicles are continuously passing over
the sensor. The two most common causes of these
incidents are either drivers not paying attention
and continuing through the ACP once the light
has turned red, or personnel driving through the
ACP in excess of the 30 kph posted speed limit
who do not have time to react to the red light and
drop arm. If you do happen to hit the drop arm with
your vehicle or the drop arm hits your vehicle, this
is a traffic accident and Army in Europe Regulation 190-1 requires you to immediately notify the
military police.
Failure to do so and leaving the scene could
result in being titled with Fleeing the Scene of a
Traffic Accident.
Employee Wellness and Civilian
Fitness Program start
The USAG Wiesbaden Employee Wellness and
Civilian Fitness Program for garrison employees
kicked off Sept. 9, and enrollments are accepted
through September. This Department of the Armyapproved program enables full-time civilian employees to engage in regular program of exercise
and other positive health habits. Supervisors may
approve up to three one-hour wellness/fitness sessions each week during normal work hours for a
consecutive six-month period of time.

Two teams faced off in a soccer match Sept. 10,
and while one emerged victorious, both teams won
something more — friendship.
The U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden soccer team
beat their counterparts from the City of Wiesbaden
5-2 after an intense game.
“It is a pleasure to have Lord Mayor [Sven] Gerich
and the team from Wiesbaden here tonight for a fun
game,” said Garrison Commander Col. Mary Martin.
The city led the first half, with the garrison team
storming back and taking the lead in the second.
“I was happy with the result and the performance in
the second half,” said Assistance Coach Paul Hughes,
who led the team in Coach Sean Miller’s absence (due
to a TDY). “However, in the first half you could tell
that our inexperience as a team was going to cause us
problems — which it did immediately — resulting in
two quick goals from the Germans.”
Hughes said substitutions were key to the teams
victory in the second half, giving each team member
the chance to rest that they needed.
“What was telling in the second half was our pace
and our fitness, this meant that every substitute that
came on was a fresh breath and took the game to the
opponent,” Hughes said. “Three of the goals came from
immediate impacts made by substitutes, a testament
to their determination.”
Hughes also said the team’s prior preparation,
and work by Miller, were extremely important to
their victory.
“The team ethic created by Sean was good in
managing players’ expectations about how we were

expecting the team to play and how the Germans
would likely play against us,” Hughes said. “It boils
down to that preparation. We had been training up to
three times a week for nearly three months for this
game. Tactical drills, fitness, coordination and hard
work paid off with a strong result that I believe we
can repeat year on year.”

Overseas Living Survey
Troops, Family members can voice opinions
U.S. Army Europe
U.S. Army Europe Soldiers stationed in
Germany will soon be asked, via e-mail, to
participate in the 2015 Cost of Living Allowance
Living Pattern Survey.
The survey will be open Oct. 1-31 and is
used to track the shopping patterns of uniformed
service members and their family members stationed overseas. The data collected will assist in
the determination of COLA paid to members in
their country of assignment.
The survey is only for service members
stationed in Ansbach, Garmisch, Geilenkirchen,
Vilseck/Grafenwoehr, Hohenfels, Kalkar, Spangdahlem, Stuttgart, Wiesbaden, Pfullendorf and
Kaiserslautern/Ramstein.
The survey asks military members and their
families to identify local economy outlets where
they normally shop for food items, clothing and
other goods and services, such as restaurant
meals, hair care products/services, auto repair,
etc. It also asks how much of their shopping is
done on the local economy, and how much is done
at the Commissary, Exchange, or on the internet.
“The more participation we get means a more
accurate picture of how
members are using the
local economy,” said

raced from location to location.
“Our inspiration was the TV show
‘Amazing Race,’” said Station Manager Bethany Haworth, who had held
a similar event at U.S. Army Garrison
Casey in South Korea in 2014. “While
we can’t necessarily travel to different
countries to learn about disasters, we can
bring them to the community.”
Participants learned all the abovementioned skills, as well as a host of
others, at 13 stations across post. In the
end, Capt. Justin Howard and his wife
Stephanie Howard were victorious, with
a blazing fast time of one hour thirty
minutes and twenty seconds.
“This was a wonderful event,” said
Stephanie. “A lot of volunteer hours
from the Red Cross went into this, and
it ended up a lot of fun and well thought
out. We love the ‘Amazing Race,’ so it
was great to do this!”
Haworth said the event went extremely well, with lots of great feedback,
like Stephanie’s, from other participants.
“Many [participants] said the event
exceeded their expectations,” Haworth
said. “One couple also said it was a great
bonding time for the two of them.”
In addition to the numerous volunteers, multiples agencies supported the
event according to Haworth.
“We had fantastic support from
several different agencies in the community for putting together the [event],”
Haworth said. “Many partner organizations hosted a station in the race, and
their station focused on what the agency
could do to help community members
prepare for disasters. Agencies ranged
from Community Bank and Andrews
Federal Credit Union focusing on
financial preparedness, to the on-post
Veterinary Clinic focusing on how to
make sure you pets are prepared for
disaster. We also had support from
AAFES, the commissary and WebCo,
that donated prizes for our winning
teams, and the USO that donated the food
for our BBQ that followed the race and
a trip voucher for first prize. A full list
of organizations that participated were:
DPTMS, DES, DHR, Andrews Federal
Credit Union, Community Bank, USO,
AFN, ACS, EFMP, Vet Clinic, BOSS,
Legal Assistance and the Health Clinic.”

things we talk about at the Pentagon every morning.”
He also addressed some of the initiatives on the
horizon, such as ensuring more certificates and licenses
cross over between the military and civilian sectors
through the future Army University, ensuring more
Soldiers exiting service have smoother transitions
to civilian life. He aims to get more courses at the
Sergeant Major Academy to earn master’s degree
accreditation, and noted the U.S. Army has the most
trained and educated enlisted force in the world, even
among sister services.
He touched on the drawdown, which will see the
Army shrink from 490,000 to 450,000 Soldiers in the
next few years via standards-based quality assessments.
“It will erode trust in our ranks if we tell the wrong
Soldier to go home,” he said.
But above all, he wants Soldiers to take care of their
own and embody the ideal of being a “Soldier for Life”
— a “billboard” — to combat the perception among
the American public that Soldiers are low-skilled.
“Not everyone in America likes a Soldier, but they
know in their heart they need a Soldier,” he said. “It’s
your job to project that presence every day.”

Fitness Center closed Sept. 26-27
The Wiesbaden Fitness Center will be closed
Sept. 26-27 while the staff moves workout equipment to the Functional Fitness Annex, adjacent to
the Strong Europe Cafe Dining Facility. The annex will open Sept. 28 with the same hours as the
fitness center (Mondays to Thursdays 5 a.m. to 9
p.m.; Saturdays, Sundays and training holidays 8
a.m. to 6 p.m.). The fitness center will also reopen
Sept. 28 while work continues in the closed-off area
where contractors are working to repair that portion
of the facility impacted by a massive water leak.

Youth bowling league
The Wiesbaden Youth Bowling League is open
to youths ages 5 to 20 and practices every Saturday
from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Wiesbaden Entertainment Center. Members can bowl in league
competition and receive coaching from a bronzelevel training bowling instructor at no additional
cost. The first day of bowling is Sept. 12 and the
season runs through April 2016. This league is
United States Bowling Congress-sanctioned and
all members receive a bowling shirt. All youths
have a chance to win scholarship money that they
will be able to use when they go to college. There
is a one-time registration fee of $18 and $8 per
week, which includes three games, rental shoes and

Running and gunning championship brings nations to Canada

As he grabbed the ammo can, he hoisted it with ease.
“Oh, it’s not that heavy,” Staff Sgt. Jason Godel
said with relief. His rifle slung across his back and his
pistol holstered above his hip as he moved.
But as he took a few more steps, the eight days
of running and gunning suddenly caught up to him.
“Wait a minute. Now it’s getting heavy,” he said.
“Put it on your shoulder,” said Chief Warrant Officer
Two Andy Knote. “Don’t cramp up your fingers carrying it by the handle. We’ve still got pistol to shoot.”
They each carried a can along 600 meters of gravel.
Not a huge distance, but already they had traveled
5.6 kilometers while carrying 10-gallon jerry cans,
dragged a 75-kilogram dummy across 100 meters
of grass, and shot various targets and plates between
runs. The dummy itself was so dislocated and awkward that Knote doubled it in half while trying to grab
hold of it. For a moment, he looked more like he was
pile-driving the dummy into the ground, rather than
trying to rescue it.
Finally, after 7.4 kilometers of distance, which
included three rifle lanes, two pistol lanes and a lot of
rock-and-roll and country singing from Knote to stay
motivated, the two Soldiers crossed the finish line in
a sprint. Covered in sweat, they peeled off their vests
and helmets, and chugged liquids to cool off.
“The hardest part is the mental game. It’s telling
yourself that this is going to suck, but it’s going to
suck only for so long, so you just keep on going,” said
Knote after catching his breath.
This event, called the Rifle Military Biathlon, was
just one of more than 30 combat-style matches in the
2015 Canadian Armed Forces Small Arms Concentration, or CAFSAC. Knote and Godel are members of an
eight-man International Combat Team from the U.S.
Army Reserve competing in this year’s international
championship, held in Ottawa each year.
The Canadian Armed Forces hosted the matches
and invited multiple allied military teams to compete
from around the world. This year, more than 250
Soldiers from Canada, Britain and the United States
formed approximately 20 teams to see how they stack
up against worldwide competition. Other international
combat events are also held each year in Arkansas,
Africa, Australia and England.
“Every few months, there’s another world championship and the best military combat shooters come
and compete there. So you’re testing yourself against
the best,” said Master Sgt. Lance Espinosa, U.S. Army
Reserve combat shooter from Skandia, located in the
Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
However, competitors said this Canadian championship was more physical than some others. All
of the matches here incorporated running or military
movement before engaging targets. For most of the
traditional combat rifle matches, Soldiers ran 100
meters from one berm to the next and shot targets
either standing, kneeling or in the prone depending
on the scenario.
The competition was held at the Connaught Ranges,
with nearly 180 total pistol and rifle lanes combined.
The rifle ranges go as far back as 900 meters, and the
Canadian atmosphere often creates mirages that pose

Warriors receive therapy through service dog training program

Naval Support Activity
Wounded, ill, and injured warriors seeking to
treat many of the unseen symptoms of stress have
an internship at their disposal designed to help them
face those challenges through interaction with a few
eager canine companions.
The Walter Reed Wounded Warrior Service Dog
Training Program, or WWSDTP, internship provides
therapy while allowing military service members on
Naval Support Activity Bethesda, or NSAB, and Fort
Belvoir, Virginia, to train dogs, which will later be
given to other disabled warriors.
“What’s unique about the service dog training
program is that we work with clinicians here from
occupational therapists to recreational therapists and
social workers to set goals with the service members.
The goals will help them, as they train the service dogs,
to eventually transition back to the civilian world,” said
Carolyn Ford, a service dog training instructor for the
program, who hails from Lawrence, Massachusetts.
“Some of the specific goals that we help them
with include socialization, emotional regulation and
reduction of isolation, because a lot of times [wounded
warriors] will go to appointments and then go back to
their rooms, isolating themselves, so we want to get
them out and get them active,” Ford said.
“The program can help people, who have trauma,
depression, anxiety and stress [among other conditions],” said Col. Matthew St. Laurent, chief of occupational therapy/department of rehabilitation for the
Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, and
a Portsmouth, New Hampshire native, who oversees
the program.
“We all know that through the human-animal bond
there is an endocrine hormonal production going on
called oxytocin which is a ‘feel good’ hormone,” St.
Laurent said. “So training a service dog can help someone, who may be going through PTSD or depression.
We know that it relaxes them and calms their nerves.”
Military service members are recommended for
the program by people on their care team to include
nurse case managers, primary care managers, occupational therapists, recreational therapists, or social
workers among others.
Once they are accepted into the program, the service
member goes to work with service dog trainers during
train-the-trainer sessions. For the first sessions, the
service members spend time developing a bond with
the dogs they’re training.
Over the course of the program, participants learn
how to groom the animals, brush their teeth, clip their
nails, check for any possible health issues, train the
dogs to ignore distractions and teach the dogs various
tasks that will allow them to assist veterans who have
physical disabilities.
Service dogs learn as many as 90 tasks during the
training to include picking up dropped keys, retrieving
things from the refrigerator, helping people undress,
open doors and turn off light switches among a host
of other duties.
One of the biggest aspects of therapy with regard
to training the dogs on commands involves emotional
regulation, a complex process, which includes the

ability to regulate one’s state or behavior, said Emily
Mittelman, a clinical service dog instructor for the program whose family hails from Ambler, Pennsylvania.
“There’s more to the program than just the socialization piece, the participant in the program can
learn emotional regulation by being able to shift their
voice to do the correct tones for commands or praise,”
Mittelman said. “They are essentially re-training the
way they think about talking to people and dogs.”
The emotional regulation, which can help ease
stress and depression through mood adjustment, has
been compared to giving commands to the dogs in the
strong intonation of someone like actor and former
California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger but then
giving praise in a lighter, happy sounding intonation
like that of Mickey Mouse.
The program utilizes a positive tone as the dog’s
reward which instructors said keeps the dogs engaged
to continue training.
“We want to make sure that whatever task we
are training the dog to do that we’re giving positive
reinforcement so we are rewarding the dog for good
behavior,” Mittelman said. “Which means the dog is
going to want to do it over and over again.”
“The dog in training may not respond to you if you
display a depressive tone,” St. Laurent said. “A dog
attends to affection and loves when you cheer it on.”
Service dogs trained in the program are mainly
mobility dogs – those trained to help people who have
some form of physical disability such as an amputation.
According to St. Laurent, with many service
members suffering from survivor’s guilt, making it
back from combat when others didn’t, the program
offers a way for them to give back to fellow veterans.
“A lot of service members leave the battlefield with
a feeling of so much guilt that they may develop post
traumatic stress reactions,” St. Laurent said. “I can
tell them that I can’t erase their past experiences, but
maybe I can provide them some tools for living by
inviting them to train a dog for a fellow vet.”
The dogs used for the WWSDTP are loaned to the
program by a local non-profit organization, which
breeds the dogs specifically to be service animals.
The program receives Golden Retrievers or Labrador
Retrievers from the organization when the dogs are
about 16 weeks old.
Once the dogs complete the program at about
the age of two years old, they are returned to the
non-profit organization and partake in a graduation
ceremony, where they are placed with a wounded, ill
or injured veteran.
For Spc. Stephone Carmichael, an infantryman and
New York native, who is now a patient assigned to the
Warrior Transition Brigade-National Capital Region,
or WTB-NCR, the program was a way to help him
deal with a traumatic brain injury, also known as TBI,
suffered after being injured in an improvised explosive
device, or IED, blast in Afghanistan in July 2014.
“It definitely helps me in terms of my TBI as it helps
me to recall things better, especially when giving and
reciting commands to the service dogs,” Carmichael
said. “It’s also a pretty relaxing atmosphere and I like
working with the animals.”

ing someone else while also helping myself with my
TBI,” he added.
When Staff Sgt. Steven Betancourt, a logistics
specialist and New York native, who is now assigned
as a patient with the WTB-NCR, was severely injured
in an accident at Kandahar, Afghanistan, in early 2014,
he suffered through the stress of a nearly debilitating
spine injury which left him with hip problems and
other major issues.
“Learning how to adapt when you’re healing is
a whole complicated process, dealing with changes
and how to go on with your future. It’s not easy but
whenever I get [stressed], I set up times to work with
the dogs,” Betancourt said. “When I leave [after working with the dogs], I’m happy, smiling and I have a
great time. When you come to work with the dogs
your frame of mind changes and everything becomes
very calm.”
Having a mobility issue himself, Betancourt said,
has allowed him to be uniquely qualified to assist in
training a mobility service dog.
“I’m not able to walk like the average person
anymore because I have a limp, and due to the spine
injury, I’m limited and will never run again,” Betancourt said. “So when I come here, I have the dog walk
at my pace, which is not the average person’s pace.
The dog has to learn how to adjust to me.”
“So once I leave, this dog will now be able to
help someone else with my condition because he’s
programmed to walk at a certain pace. It’s great to be
able to help a wounded warrior in that way.”
Currently, there are about 12 dogs being trained
in the WWSDTP by wounded, ill or injured warriors
at both NSAB and Fort Belvoir.

Clamoring for castles in Scotland

For true history lovers, it never really gets old:
the feeling of stepping into a place where hundreds, maybe thousands of years, others like you
have stood, too. They lived, ate, played, worked
and died here. You wonder what it was like to be
them. The residents of such relics are long gone,
and the elements have waged war on their walls,
yet still they stand: majestic castles.
For admirers of olden times or parents just
looking for a place for their kids to burn off
some energy, the castles of Scotland are many
and magnificent. From Cawdor Castle, the one
where Shakespeare’s Macbeth took place to Spynie
Palace, where Mary, Queen of Scots was once
entertained, each one has a story.
This castle caller focused on those located in
the areas of Aberdeenshire and Moray in Speyside.
Balvenie Castle in Dufftown, one of the oldest
in Scotland, is right across from the Glenfiddich
distillery and once home to the formidable Comyn
family during the 13th century. They were toppled
by the famous Robert the Bruce because of their
alliance with the Black Douglases, who were then
taken over by the Stewarts.
Also near Dufftown is Auchindoun Castle. Like
others, it has been passed through various clans
with lots of fighting. It even inspired a folk song
called “The Burning of Auchindoun.”
Finally, Spynie Palace is set against the ram-

bling backdrop of sporadic forests, clear fields
and what once was a marsh. It was the seat of the
bishops of Moray and essentially an entertainment center for those higher in the hierarchy, the
royals. A tour is not necessary, as signs point out
interesting features, such as the bowling green
and well. Hearths still stand in the dining room,
and you can climb the stairs to the top for a
360-degree view. It’s incredible and terrifying,
and the highlight of this castle.
Since those were the only two castles this
Scotland traveler was able to visit in four days,
a native Scot, Yvonne Farrel, was consulted on
the significance of castles to the average Scot.
“We’ve grown up with castles as common as
government buildings. Most people have visited
those castles, and there are a lot of them compared
to what you would find in France,” she said. “It’s
a reminder that once upon a time Scotland had its
own royalty separate from England’s.”
She said she’s visited five or six castles. She
visits Edinburgh Castle every time friends are
in town, but Stirling Castle is her favorite. It
overlooks a large battlefield perched up on a rock.
“It looks like it can stand on its own,” she said.
“It felt more realistic — I could imagine people
living in it. Edinburgh feels more like a fortress.
It’s in the middle of the city, built up around it.

A Mountain of Monkeys!

zoo (in high school). I would
say I was their best employee, but
the rest of the employees might
disagree. Details aren’t important. The important part is that I
worked at the zoo and spent early
mornings opening the gift shop
and listening to the animals wake
up for breakfast.
What were my favorite animals?
They were the Francois
langur monkeys,
who carried

on each morning as if their sole job
was to wake the rest of the animals
from their slumber to announce a
new day had started. This experience left me with a fondness for
primates. So when a friend told
me that there is a “monkey mountain” in France only two hours
away from my house, I had to see
it for myself. One cannot hear of a
monkey mountain and NOT visit.
(You’re planning your trip as you
read aren’t you?) It is not a
mountain made of monkeys (as the name might
suggest), but rather a
mountain dedicated to the care and
habitation of the
Barbary macaque
species.
Arriving
The park of Mountain of Monkeys (La
Montagne des Singes)
itself is easy to get to
and has lots of free
parking. Upon entering, there are a
few playgrounds
where children
can pretend they
are
monkeys
themselves.
There is also a
self serve cafe
with snacks, ice
cream and wine
for those of us who
require a little liquid
courage either before or
after (or both) a monkey
encounter.
After purchasing tickets, we followed a path to the entrance gate
where an employee explained the
rules of the park (in English, German or French). They are generally
what you expect: don’t harass the
wildlife and offer only the supplied
popcorn with your hand fully extended. Also visitors are told not
to put the popcorn in their pockets, because the monkeys will go in
after it. There was also some talk of
the minimal risk of monkeys taking your personal belongings. The
guide continued to talk, but by that
point I was busy imagining myself
swarmed by hungry monkeys tearing at my clothes and pulling my
hair. For the record, that didn’t
happen.
Monkey madness
Inside the park a kind employee
handed us a small handful of popcorn and mutters something about
not feeding babies or holding food
close to your body. I handed all of
my popcorn to my husband. Better one of us be able to drive home
(or to the hospital) I figured. But
to my delight the visitors were like
old hats to the monkeys. They sat
perched on the timbers lining the
pedestrian path and affably waited
for a stranger with a (literal) handout. Everywhere we looked there
were monkeys perched in trees,
playing on the ground or “monkeying” around on signs and on water
toys. Small children squealed with
delight as they spotted monkeys
behaving not unlike themselves
and eating popcorn out of their
hands.

Beyond monkeys
The path in the park is about
half a mile and the whole experience lasts about an hour. However, if you’re making the two hour
trek, there are some other attractions in the area that can help
justify the drive.
• Eagle Mountain is located
adjacent to monkey mountain
and offers bird of prey shows. The
park was closed due to inclement
weather when we went (it seems
monkeys don’t mind the rain
but eagles and owls just aren’t
having it).
• Walk around Kintzheim Castle ruins (by the Eagle sanctuary)
and tour the museum inside.
• Spend time walking the timber-house lined streets of Kintzheim and do some antique shopping and wine drinking.

Today: Crêpes with
Quark filling
Preparation
FOR THE FILLING:
You will need to marinade raisins in rum, water, sugar and lime
juice a week before making this
dessert. Allow for a spoon full of
raisins, one teaspoon rum, a sip of
lime juice, one spoon of water and
1/4 teaspoon of sugar per person.
If you like you can also add a bit
of cinnamon.
Strain the marinated raisins.
Be sure to save the liquid for apple
pie or Apfelstrudel, or anything
else that calls for drunken raisins.
250 g of quark*, 6 spoons of
liquid cream (if you don’t have
liquid cream at home, no worries,
regular milk will work also), lime
juice and sugar.
FOR THE CRÊPES :
Allow 1 and a half spoons of
flour, 2 spoons of milk, 1 egg and
a bit of sugar per person. Margarine for the pan. If you like, you
can have vanilla ice cream and
whipped cream with the Crêpes.
In a bowl, mix the quark, milk
and lime juice. Add the sugar and
a dash of the raisin liquid to give
it added flavor.
Stir all the ingredients until
you have a texture like ground apples. Then add the raisins, stirring
carefully.
In another bowl, mix the flour
and the milk with a whisk to create a runny dough. Then add the
sugar and the egg.
Heat a non-sticking pan with
the margarine.
Put just enough dough in the
pan to cover it for a thin Crêpe.
Cook it slowly on low heat, turning it once it has a nice yellow
color. Don’t let them turn brown.
Place the Crêpes on a plate and
put them in a pre-heated oven
(low heat) to keep them warm
until all Crêpes are made.
Take one Crêpe add two
spoons of the quark filling and
roll the Crêpe. Add some vanilla
ice cream or whipped cream for a
really delicious dessert.
(If you are counting calories,
make a lighter version by using
fat-free milk and low-fat quark.
Replace the sugar with stevia or
something similar. And use lowfat vanilla ice cream and whipped
cream).

Military AutoSource Builds Largest
European Vehicle Showroom in Kaiserslautern
Since opening their doors in 1987, Military AutoSource has
been providing the military community in Kaiserslautern with
benefits and safeguards on their new vehicle purchases.
After welcoming the luxury brand Mercedes-Benz to an
already robust line-up in 2015, Military AutoSource is
giving their showroom a makeover. This new construction
