PRESIDENTS REPORT
Hall of Fame Presentation Dinner - Possibly the highlight of 2012 was the formation of the WA Squash
Hall of Fame which commenced with a formal dinner and announcement of four(4) inaugural inductees –
Barbara Wall, Dean Williams, Robyn Friday and Ken Watson. This was a long awaited but very enjoyable
occasion and brought about primarily by the efforts of Sue Hillier and Alan East.Plans are well underway
for the 2013 dinner and numbers are already looking significantly higher than 2012. It is hoped that every
year we can make this event more and more successful with the main goals of acknowledging the
achievements of our previous leading players and hopefully getting them back together to renew
friendships and recollections of past glories.
Referees - At the WA Open in May 2012 we once again conducted Referee training and assessment
programmes (with assistance from John Small and Chris Sinclair) to increase the numbers of our
accredited Referees. This was quite successful with some 6 new referees and reaccreditation of most
existing referees.
Country - Once again Mike Cornish has travelled massive numbers of kilometres to develop our country
clubs and players. The inflatable courts are continuing to brightly promote squash and introduce squash to
many children who would otherwise be totally unaware of our sport. Countryweek reverted to the normal
weekend at the end of September after the CHOGM hiccup of 2011 which pushed it back to the end of
October. Numbers were similar to previous years and the social interaction as always was possibly more
enjoyed than the squash.
Juniors - Numbers and standards in country areas are increasing quite quickly but we have a lot of work
to do to get metro numbers up. At the 2012 Australian Junior Championships (AJCs) we once again came
rd
3 which was a good result in relation to our population. In 2014 WA has been rostered to manage the
AJCs . This is an opportunity to hopefully improve our results on home ground but also will present
significant challenges for a complex management task for our Junior Committee.
Terrace Squash Centre - Is continuing to grow in turnover and profit which is being utilised primarily for
country and junior development. The sublease of the offices has just been renegotiated to give substantial
on going income to our organisation.
Pennants - As always the greatest challenge is to maintain the number of registered and active pennant
players. This year was no different.
Funding - Once again the financial support of the Department of Sport and Recreation and Healthway
was substantial and vital to our operations.
The Board - A major positive of the management of WA Squash has been the stability of the members
of the board with many of them having been involved for a lengthy period. This can also be a weakness
as there is always a possibility of the core members retiring together. The board is aware of this and was
happy to welcome one new member this year – Shawn Billowes. Linda Roberts joined last year but we
need to be constantly seeking new enthusiastic board members.
Thanks - As usual a great number of volunteers and staff have been vitally involved in the administration
of squash in WA during 2012. I wish to thank all those members of the board, sub committees and our
member clubs who have contributed and a special thanks to Don Huffer for the many long hours
contributed to ensure that squash continues to progress in WA.
Steve Bowen, President WA Squash

From Rockingham; Ashley Clarke from Katanning and Dr Ray Borcherds from Geraldton; as well as
others from Perth who gave their time and effort to Masters, I am sincerely grateful.
Events
Tussle on the Terrace (February 2012)
69 players attended & ran their little hearts out. A well-run, fun night was enjoyed by all.
South West Teams, Busselton (March 2012)
Up in numbers, with a record five divisions. Lots of hot, happy, exhausted people.
Katanning Games (April 2012)
Good attendance from Perth but not well supported by Katanning players. That didn’t stop us from having
a good time.
Rock Classic, Rockingham (May 2012)
Numbers were up on last year. Well organised and run by Doug Minchin and willing volunteers.
Geraldton Masters (August 2012)
Good numbers from Perth and again from Geraldton. Doug Minchin organised and donated the costs for
a bus to Geraldton.
WA Masters State Championships, Blue Gum Squash Centre (July 2012)
Numbers were very good. Lots of hard work by volunteers and committee members made this a special
tournament, with most of the players staying back for the presentations.
Australian Masters Championships, Individual/Teams, Adelaide SA (September 2012)
Approximately 64 people from WA made the trip to Adelaide. Large numbers from all over Australia
attended. A great experience.
Spring Teams, Squash Factory (November 2012)
Numbers up on last year. This fun tournament capped off the year nicely, with almost everyone staying for
presentations.
Friday Night Masters Season one; there seemed to be a great vibe, numbers were well up.
Season two; as usual, was not as good; with injuries, holidays and social engagements etc. eroding
numbers a bit but all in all a very satisfying year for Masters’ Friday Nighters.
Social Activities
Dinners were held on the Saturday night of the Busselton Teams event, Katanning Games, Rock Classic
and Geraldton Masters.
Page 7
Annual Report 2012
Masters’ subsidised dinners at Il Cammino in Carlisle, being the State Masters Championships’ Dinner
(50 people); House of Chow in Adelaide, being the teams dinner get together, every WA person in
Adelaide attended (65 people).
End of year function, Christmas Dinner Dance, at the Royal Perth Golf Club (101 people).
A tribute to our hard working committee who made these events successful.
General
Masters’ purchases over the year: double door lock up cabinet, 50 inch plasma TV, 120 laminated
calendars, 200 car stickers (the proceeds of 100 of these, $382.00, was donated to Junior Squash for
their Esperance tournament medallions), approximately 60 towels(45 were embroidered), polo shirts for
the State Championships and Australian Championships, racquets (at cost) from Black Knight for State
Championships prizes, trophies and Honour board shields, wine and beer for prizes and functions.

Annual Report 2012
INAUGURAL HALL OF FAME DINNER
The Inaugural Hall of Fame dinner was held on 19 September at the iconic Old Brewery, Thomas
Hardwick Room. 119 guests attended representing WA Squash from the 50s, 60s, 70, 80s and 90s and
what a fantastic night it was.
It was a great social event with many catching up with former pennant team members, State Team
members, coaches, managers, Life Members and of course our four inductees, Ken Watson, Barbara
Wall, Dean Williams and Robyn Lambourne.
The first inductee was Robyn Lambourne (nee Friday). When asked about her memorable events she
reflected on the World Open Juniors but went on to say that the tournaments she played in each country
all held a special memory and was hard to pick out a favourite one. Robyn currently lives in England and
is now a swim coach. Robyn has four children who are all active however none are playing squash. Her
eldest son is an excellent swimmer and is hoping to go to the next Olympics, remember the Lambourne
name.
Next was Dr Ken Watson. Ken was a talented athlete excelling in many sports who discovered the game
of squash on a rainy day when tennis was cancelled. Ken was also an academic which took him to
Oxford University and then to Europe where he spent a considerable time coaching. Ken spoke about
how his scientific background led him to analysing the game to improve his coaching skills. Ken is one of
the most respected squash coaches in Australia and the World Squash Federation.
Barbara Wall was excited to be inducted into the WA Squash Hall of Fame. This was the first time
Barbara could celebrate her British Open win with the WA Squash community and so many people she
grew up with. Barb spoke about her journey from a young player jumping on the Oxford courts whenever
someone was late for their booking to her quest to be strong and fit for the 1979 British Open. With the
help of Shirley Strickland her fitness improved and the rest they say is history. Barb spoke about the
influence her father George Wall had on her career. Barb thanked all the people in the room who had
helped her throughout her career and said she was so excited and honoured to be inducted into the WA
Squash Hall of Fame.
Dean Williams followed on from Barb and like her Dean said this was a special award as he could share
the night with so many people who had a part in his career. Deans father Harley wanted him to go to
university but said if he could win the Junior and Senior title in the one year then he could pursue his love
of squash. With this incentive Dean took up the challenge and never looked back. Dean reminisced
about some great matches he had with Steve Wall which set him up to play the great Pakistani’s including
Jahangir Khan. Dean was one of the few players to take a game off Jahangir which obviously didn’t go
down well with Jahangir as he told the story about a later match that only lasted 6 minutes.
WA Squash would like thank Alan East for his valued input and tireless hours to make this such a
successful event. Thank you also to Sue Hillier for organising this event.

Annual Report 2012
JUNIOR COMMITTEE REPORT
Roger Campbell, Mark Bridle, Pam Addison, David Cowell, Rachel Percival, John MacMillon and Sandie
Davis made up the Junior Committee for 2012. They were very ably assisted and guided by the WA
Squash Development Officer, Sue Hillier. The Committee met 6 times during the year and placed a major
emphasis on improving junior participation numbers.
The Junior camp was held at Blue Gum Squash Centre to start the year and was attended by about 80
players between the ages of 12 and 15. This was followed by the first junior tournament of the year, the
New Year’s Bash which attracted 72 entries. While many players were a bit rusty the large number of
entries made it a good competitive start of the season.
The State Junior Championships were held at Esperance with 87 entries. Our State junior Champions for
2012 were Eloise O’Connor and Matthew Bridle. The Junior Teams event was held in the week following
with six regions competing. This contributed to the number of country players in the State Championships
as most country regions were represented. The winners for the third year in a row were the Esperance
Bashers with the Northern Nicks finishing second. The winners of the Joyce Barnett and Chas Renner
sportsmanship awards were Kiara Rogers and Jeremy Gordon respectively.
The percentage of country involvement was reflected in the make-up of the State Junior Team with half
the members coming from country regions.
There were a number of tournaments around the state during the year, generally run by the club hosting
them. The exception was the Presidents Cup which was run by the Junior Committee when the centre
that applied to host it pulled out at the last minute. The State Junior Championships and Teams Event
were run by WA Squash office staff.
The State Junior Team travelled to Hobart for the Australian Junior Championships in September. I would
like to acknowledge the time and effort put in by the State Junior Coach, Mike Cornish, Assistant Junior
Coach, Sue Hillier, and the State Junior Team Manager, Sue Cowell with some coaching support from
Tim Cowell. They were assisted by several parents, including Mark Bridle and Nanette Hollis who acted
as carers and helpers. There were several notable Individual results including Eloise O’Connor Runner up
Girls 17YAG and Luke Bunting Runner up Boys 19 YAG. Matt Bridle and Kiara Rogers made the semifinals of their age groups. In the Teams Event WA finished third overall behind Queensland and New
South Wales. WA finished runner up in the 13 YAG and 19 YAG. The Junior Committee spend a largest
amount of time on State Team issues, especially the financial side and chasing up monies owed.
Rachel Percival and Sandie Davis are leaving the committee and I would like to thank them for their
service over the last few years. There are three new members who are nominating and they will hopefully
provide new ideas and different ways of looking at things.
As we head into 2013 there are a number of challenges for the committee and the juniors. The
introduction of the Australian Junior Tour and Ranking System may cause confusion over national
rankings and seeding’s for national events but will hopefully settle down as any hiccups are dealt with.
The lack of girls coming through remains low although is better than the last few years. The challenge is
to get them into the sport and keep them through all the age groups.
Over the last couple of years the number playing in junior competitions has grown but there are still a
number of clubs that either don’t have juniors or only have a few playing in WA Squash events and we
should be looking to encourage the competitive side of the sport.

‘SMARTER THAN SMOKING’ JUNIOR TALENT SQUAD CAMP
th
th
The 2012 Squash camp was held at the Bluegum Squash Centre 19 and 29 January.
The metro clubs represented at the camp were Belmont, Bluegum, Hilton, Madd/Gosnells, Marmion and
Vic Park. The country juniors came from Bruce Rock, Esperance, Exmouth, Geraldton, Kambalda,
Katanning, Kojunup, Moora and Narrogin.
Overall we had 56 juniors attend the camp. The break down was:
Country – 34 players, 27 13 age group (22 boys and 5 girls) and 7 in 15s (6 boys and 1 girl).
Metro – 22 players, 13 in 13 age group (9 boys and 4 girls) and 9 in 15s (6 boys and 3 girls).
Mike Cornish, State Coaching Director and myself organized the event with the assistance of coaches;
Tim Cowell, Tim Cornish, Boby Markovic, Mike Dufour, Josh Aviet, Tom Bowden and Lachie McVey.
They all did a fantastic job having to cope with oppressive weather conditions with the temperature
reaching 38 degrees for both days.
Day 1
We commenced the camp with a warm up and physical assessment (best to get this over before it got too
hot). The juniors were split into 6 groups – we had some juniors with excellent core strength and others
who now know what to work on. The 5 minute endurance test was not popular but was a great
opportunity to assess the fitness level of each of the participants.
The next session was on squash techniques with coaches going through the basics. We then we moved
onto specific shots with each coach assigned a different shot to teach. This was a great tool to identify the
levels of the palyers and to provide some tips on how to develop each shot. The nourishing natural lollies
on offer were a great incentive for the participants to hit targets.
Lunch was a welcome break for the players presenting a chance to fuel up and rehydrate.
After lunch a skills testing session saw many junior pass the Blue, Green, Red, Orange and Bronze levels.
The silver level proved too difficult for all of them.
Restricted game play followed. It seemed that all juniors thoroughly enjoyed the session as they played
until exhausted and time for home.
Day 2
The Day’s activities were due to commence with the outside team challenges. This had to be quickly
reorganised due to freak thunder and lightning.
We commenced the day with a warm up in hot and wet conditions. Flexibility assessments followed
involving a noted flexible coach in Josh Aviet. Some of the players impresses with their flexibility but as
usual the stand out was from Esperance.. The Teams Championship followed. The juniors were split into
8 teams (each team a mixture of experienced players and beginners) and each junior challenging one of
Page 11
Annual Report 2012
the members of the opposing sides. The overall winner was team 5 who won all matches. Each member
of the winning team received eyewear for their efforts.
Lunch was a welcome relief as it again offered the opportunity for the players to have a rest and refuel.
There was no such luxury for the coaches as thy received a run through on the afternoon activities and
had to prepare themselves for what appeared to be a challenging and interesting afternoon..
A Referee/Marker workshop conducted by the illustrious Neil Butler kicked off the afternoon session. The
participants remained in their groups with Neil presenting them with a “how to be a millionaire” quiz.
Participants had the option of asking a team member for assistance. The final score saw teams 3, 4 and
8 in a tie. In the tiebreaker each team sent in their captains to answer the final question. Despite two of
them being State Team members they could not handle the pressure and with no question answered
correctly the squiz remained tied. The juniors all learned some valuable principles of refereeing and
marking. Such information was put to good use when they were required to fulfil such roles at the
tournament the next two days.
With all the coaches and juniors well rested we went onto the Team Challenge. These activities required
participants to work together as a team. Points were available for each challenge. We had 8 activities (4
outside and 4 on the courts) with only two using squash rackets.
Some of the challenges were quite difficult, in fact the one I ran ‘helium stick’ was much tougher than it
looked. The aim was to get a long piece of dowel to the floor with everyone’s fingers still in contact with
the stick. Whilst it sounded easy, it was not. Teamwork and effective communication skills were
required. Watching the team members attempt to work together was interesting and at times quite
comical (I had a great time). None of the teams managed to successfully complete this challenge ( too
many chiefs and not enough Indians).
In the other challenges we saw some great scores with:
 ‘The Tree Nest’ -getting as many balls into the basket in a specific time frame. The basket was
strung up on a tree.
 ‘Moon Ball’ - keep the ball off the ground for as long as possible whilst keeping the correct order.

‘A Frame’ - get a person standing on the A Frame from A – B via ropes attached to the A frame
held by the rest of the team, to be completed in the fastest time possible.

Agility – the physical challenge to run around the course in quickest time.
 Concentration Grid - in a time frame tick off the numbers 1 – 100 as quick as possible taking
turns per number – was this easy? The highest score was16
 Continuous Drives – to hit as many drives down the backhand wall within a target area. The
challenge here was some could drive others struggled.
 Serve Challenge - to serve and land the ball into a box at back of the court.
The overall winner was team 7. They won the most (4) challenges due to their communication skills and
ability to get on as a team. They received eyewear for their excellent efforts.
The camp ended with Mike Cornish handing out the Skill Testing certificates and camp attendance
certificates.
Once again the camp was a great success. A special thanks to Thea White who voluntarily organized the
lunches and snacks each day which was a tough job satisfying hungry squash players and coaches.
Thank you to Rita Baldwin-Wright who helped Thea in this task and also thankyou to Neil Harland who
cooked the sausages. Thank you to the parents who provided lots of muffins for morning tea.
A special thank you to Gay Dean and Bluegum Squash Centre for the use of their courts during the camp
and tournament.
Thank you to all the coaches mentioned above, to Neil Butler for his expertise and to Don Huffer,
Manager WA Squash for his support of this event.

WA STATE JUNIOR INDIVIDUAL CHAMPIONSHIPS REPORT
The 2012 WA State Junior Age Individual Championships attracted 123 entries with
ages ranging from 9 to 19. Players came from as far afield as Broome, Kalgoorlie and
Esperance. It was pleasing to see a significant increase on last year’s entries with 50
metropolitan juniors competing. Growth in numbers can largely be attributed to the hard
work of dedicated volunteers in the various Country and Metropolitan regions.
Matt Bridle took out the top seed Luke Bunting to win the 19 years old boys age group
in a close 5 game match. Eloise O'Connor won the 19 girls age group after beating
Luka Stroop in 3.

WA STATE JUNIOR TEAMS CHAMPIONSHIPS REPORT
The 2012 State Junior Teams event was held in conjunction with the Individuals championship.
This year it journeyed to the Goldfields region, all the way down to the defending champion’s
home town of Esperance.
We had 6 teams enter with newcomers Goldfields Minors (GFM) combining the centre of
Eastern Goldfields & Kambalda.
The Defending champions, the Esperance Bay of Isle’s Bashers (ESP) had hot competition
from the other top 3 teams: Central Champs (CEN), Mid West Magic (MDW), and Northern
Nicks (NTN). The Southwest Slammers (STW) came into the comp with possibly their strongest
team to date. All of the teams did their best with filling all age groups, but unfortunately there
was a lack of 11’s girls with Esperance being the only region to have a representative.
Round 1 ESP v GFM, CEN v STW & MDW v NTN
The defending champions had everything under wraps when they started off against their
neighbours to the north. An initiation to many from the new team as to how enticing it can be
when you’re playing for a team. The result ESP v GFM (35-5). CEN was off and running
against an improved STW team, who took the 17’s match away from CEN. Both teams did not
have any 11’s players so 10 points were void from the overall score. The result CEN v STW
(23-7). 3 v 4, MDW taking on the team they piped last year in NTN. But the tables turned on
the magic with NTN breaking through. The result, MDW v NTN (8-29).
Round 2 CEN v NTN, ESP v MDW & STW v GFM
The Nicks showed in the last round that they really want to be back into the top three, and here
they were against the no.2 ranked Champs. It was a tough contest with NTN taking the 13’s &
11’s & CEN taking the 15’s & 17’s but NTN had just enough points to take the win. The result
CEN v NTN (14-23). Esperance were out to prove dominance and they claimed it against the
Magic. The result ESP v MDW (29-11). The Slammers, as always give it their all in the teams
but that wasn’t enough to shake off the newcomers. Although, a special mention to Brent Brody
(STW), for a spectacular dive for the ball in his match. The result STW v GFM (12-25).
Round 3 MDW v CEN, ESP v STW & NTN v GFM
The Magic were looking to take a win after rounds 1 & 2. The Champs were out to deny them,
claiming the 13’s, 15’s & 17’s. The result MDW v CEN (11-26). It was a one sided affair in ESP
v STW, but the Slammers are not short on determination, managing to avoid a white wash. The
result ESP v STW (34-3). The Nicks were on a roll at looking to reclaim a top three spot, at this
stage they were only a few points difference with ESP. The Minors were settling in well, even
after they lost their 17’s player to injury. The result NTN v GFM (35-2)
Page 14
Annual Report 2012
Round 4 CEN v GFM, ESP v NTN & MDW v STW
Day 2 of the teams, nearly at the end. All credit to the Minors, they did not give up. Even though
the results are against them they kept up their performance. The Champs were just too classy
for them. The result CEN v GFM (30-7). The match that the Nicks were looking forward too
against rival Esperance. The points were close and both teams knew they needed the wins.
Once again the top 15 boys met up with Damon MacMillan cementing his position as 15’s
Champion against Darby Scoble. But it wasn’t enough for the nicks. The result ESP v NTN (2614). MDW had not won yet and were looking to get some points on the board. They breathed
easily winning all but the 17’s. The result. MDW v STW (25-9)
Round 5 MDW v GFM, NTN v STW & ESP v CEN
The final round of what has been a terrific tournament. With everyone looking forward to
finishing and planning the long trip home. The Magic had a win on the board and The Minors
were just enjoying the experience. The result MDW v GFM (24-10). The Nicks dominated the
13’s with them winning and being undefeated throughout the teams championships. However
the Nicks played out of order in the higher age groups but were gracious in defeat with the
Slammers taking their second ever win in the teams. Once again Brent Brody entertained the
crowd during his match. The result NTN v STW (22-15). Esperance were not going to make it
easy for the Champs as they once again cemented their top spot despite the Champs taking
the 13’s. The result ESP v CEN (27-13)
Before the overall results the Sportsmanship awards were announced. The Joyce Barnett and
the Chas Renner awards were presented to the recipients of who the coaches/managers
thought had the best attitude on court and played the best.
The Joyce Barnett Award went to Kiara Roger (NTN) on a total of 20 votes. Kiara performed
consistently in an undefeated 13’s team.
The Chas Renner Award went to a brand new junior who was also a reserve player. Jeremy
Gordon from Tom Price, representing STW. He has a natural talent and always enjoyed
playing. The winners of the 2012 State Junior Teams Event, for the third year in a row on 151
points – Esperance (Bay of Isles) Bashers.

I would personally like to thank the Esperance Squash Club for providing the facilities which
were fantastic, the canteen and the ‘wood fire’ especially. To all of the Team managers,
coaches and parents, we thank them for taking the time to bring the juniors to Esperance
Also to the sponsors; The WA Masters Squash Committee, WA Squash & Smarter than
Smoking. We thank them, as without their continued support we would not be able to hold
great events such as these.
The State Titles and Teams Event next year head back to Perth but the centre is still to be
confirmed

2012 WA CLOSED CHAMPIONSHIPS
The 2012 WA Closed event has produced
two first time winners with Tim Cowell and
Sue Hillier becoming this year’s
champions.
Tim Cowell defeated Chris Lark in a hard
fought 5 game final to become the Mens
Closed Champion.
In the ladies event Sue Hillier had to
overcome two former WA Closed
Champions before taking out this year’s
title. Sue defeated Amanda Hopps (1996,
2009 and 2011 Champion) to make the
play off for the 2012 title and then
recovered after losing the first game to
defeat Cindy Meintjes (2007 and 2010
Champion) in the final.
