SeniorLifestyles A guide for active New Hampshire Seniors June 2015 • Free Inside Northern Rail Trail named Best NH Bike Trail - P. 5 Concerned Veterans for America announced its 'Thank A Vet' program Out & About Happenings in Nh Pages 20-23 4th Annual Wings & Wheels supports Gerry's Food Pantry The 4th Annual Wings & Wheels event, hosted by the Rochester Police Department, will be held at Skyhaven Airport, managed by Pease Development Authority and located at 238 Rochester Hill Rd. in Rochester, New Hampshire. The event takes place on Saturday, June 13th from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. and will include entertainment, concessions, airplane rides and more. All proceeds benefit Gerry’s Food Pantry in Rochester. Pilots can participate in the Passport Run by visiting neighboring airports and ending at Skyhaven for a chance to win great prizes. And when they feel financially secure, retirees also report they're enjoying retirement more, they feel fulfilled and are less likely to experience negative emotions. The study, Health, Wealth and Happiness in Retirement (www. massmutual.com/healthwealth) is part of a larger research project conducted on behalf of MassMutual by Greenwald & Associates. The research split 905 retirees with at least $50,000 in assets into two subgroups: those who characterized their health as excellent or very good and those who characterized their health as good or poor. "The message for both retirees and pre-retirees is that health has a major impact on satisfaction with life in retirement," says Elaine Sarsynski, executive vice president of MassMutual Retirement Services. "We need to focus on our health as much as possible so we can enjoy life to the fullest extent in our later years. While none of us can predict how healthy we will be in the future, we can help influence SeniorLifestyles Leigh Bosse: Publisher Joyce Bosse: Editor Christi Macomber: Advertising Design Gail Stratos: Publications Design & Layout, Advertising Design, Production, Website Mary Yuryan: Sales Rep. Seven out of 10 retirees in better health say they feel financially secure compared to 51 percent of retirees in poorer health, the study found. Retirees in poorer health were twice as likely to feel anxious about their finances and lack a sense of purpose, and three times more likely to feel lonely, the research found. Also, four in 10 retirees overall say they spend more on health care than they expected before retiring, with 43 percent spending more than $5,000 annually and 14 percent spending more than $10,000. If you're in retirement, or looking forward to retirement, maintaining a healthy lifestyle should be a goal to help you better enjoy your retirement years. An earlier study conducted by MassMutual and Greenwald & Associates, Hopes, Fears and Reality - What Workers Expect in Retirement and What Steps Help Them Achieve the Retirement They Want (www.massmutual.com/ retire), found that nearly half of all retirees retired sooner than they anticipated. This may mean that they are retiring at a younger age, and looking forward to enjoying their retirement years as much as possible. Studies show that good health allows retirees to get out and enjoy life. Playing golf or tennis, spending the afternoon on a boat, or meeting with friends and family for lunch or dinner are all enjoyable activities retirees may have time to do. However, when a person falls ill, they may not be able to get out and enjoy the retired life as much as someone who is healthy. "Our study focused on people in the first 15 years of retirement," says Mathew Greenwald, president of Greenwald & Associates. "In many cases, serious medical issues arise after that, in older age. But even in the healthiest part of retirement, better health clearly has an impact on most people's ability to fully enjoy retirement. Many of these issues will only be exacerbated for retirees as they age, which puts an exclamation point on the importance of wellness." Its editors' top picks include the Northern Rail Trail as Best NH Bike Trail. “Kudos to this 50+mile stretch: It’s been added to ‘100 Top Trails in the U.S.’ by Rails-to-Trails Conservancy in Washington, D.C. The longest rail trail in the state…it glides past farms, orchards, lakes, mill sites and covered bridges…” The Merrimack County portion of the Trail was completed last fall and is in prime condition for this summer’s biking and hiking. It starts just north of the Concord city line in Boscawen where it can be accessed by parking at the Hannah Dustin Park and Ride just off exit 17 on Route 93. From there the trail heads northwest 35 miles to the Danbury/Grafton line where the Grafton County part of the trail begins. As the old Northern Railroad followed the path of least resistance along waterways, the Northern Rail Trail provides views of the Merrimack in Boscawen, waterfalls and Webster Lake in Franklin, Highland Lake and the Blackwater River in Andover, Frazier Brook in Wilmot and Eagle Pond in Danbury. In Grafton County the Trail skirts the Mascoma River and Lake Mascoma before it enters downtown Lebanon. “We’re thrilled that the Trail has received this recognition from Yankee magazine—and we couldn’t agree more with their designation!” said Craig Heim, Wilmot resident and member of the Board of Directors of the Friends of the Northern Rail Trail in Merrimack County. The Northern Rail Trail is open to all non-motorized users, free of charge. It has two Welcome Centers, the Highland Lake Inn in East Andover, and the Danbury Country Store in Danbury. In this year’s “750s for Change” campaign, Bacardi USA donated $1 to the NH Food Bank for every Bacardi USA 750ml bottle purchased at any of the state’s 78 NH Liquor & Wine Outlets throughout February and March. The NH Food Bank, the only food bank in the state, strives to provide nutritious food and resources to the more than 143,200 New Hampshire residents who are food insecure, meaning they do not know where their next meal is coming from. “In raising $10,000 for the NH Food Bank this year, NHLC is extremely proud that the 750s for Change campaign continues to make a positive impact on New Hampshire’s nonprofit community,” said NHLC Chairman Joseph W. Mollica. “Last year, the 750s for Change campaign generated $10,000 in critical funds for the Wildlife Heritage Foundation of New Hampshire. It was our pleasure to once again partner with Bacardi USA to support the NH Food Bank’s efforts to provide nutritious meals and resources to people in need. Along with NHLC’s primary focus of delivering record revenues to the New Hampshire General Fund, we are always proud to support New Hampshire’s nonprofit community.” Relying on its statewide footprint of 78 NH Liquor & Wine Outlets, NHLC has made it a point to work with its partner businesses to lend vital support to New Hampshire nonprofit organizations. Along with the NH Food Bank, NHLC has teamed with the Animal Rescue League of New Hampshire, MooreMart, Easter Seals New Hampshire, Toys for Tots, and the Wildlife Heritage Foundation of New Hampshire on campaigns raising more than $427,000 during the last two years- !"#$%&'(()%!"#**+,%#$%-./$#*0%)+.!" During 2014, the NH Food Bank reached a record food distribution of 11 million pounds, which is equivalent to 9,166,666 meals; a nearly 30% increase compared to 2013. “We are extremely grateful to NHLC and Bacardi USA for their support at a time when the need is only growing,” said Mel Gosselin, Executive Director of the NH Food Bank. “More than 143,200 people in New Hampshire are food insecure— including more than 42,170 children. This year, the Food Bank is aiming to increase its distribution by 10% to 12 million pounds of food to meet the growing demand here in New Hampshire.” DOG & CAT ALERT Is Your Flea & Tick Treatment Poisoning Your Pet? Page 8 | Senior lifestyles | June 2015 Budgeting tips to keep your golden years golden You've earned your retirement, and while it's a chance to relax and relish in your deserved time off, it's still important to keep track of your finances, savings and budget. With that in mind, here are five ways you can maintain a healthy budget and enjoy your dream retirement. Understand your expenses. Your life as a retiree is different now than it was during your employed years. Gone are the day-to-day working responsibilities; and here to stay is more free-time to explore hobbies and spend with friends and family. To learn how much money you'll need for your new lifestyle, it's a good idea to create a budget. Record all expenditures month-to-month, and assess where to add on or cut back. Make note of large expenses (trips or big purchases), but don't disregard them as oneoffs. It's often a good idea to anticipate and save for the next big purchase. Discover cost-cutting options. Whether in your home or out and about, it's important to stay connected. However, standard cellphone plans can be expensive and often cause you to pay for services you'll never use. TracFone offers a more costeffective alternative by offering you reliable service on the nation's largest and most dependable network without any contracts or hidden fees. And, for retirees who are on-the-go, TracFone's StaySafe No-Contract Mobile Bonus pack can ensure you're keeping the lines of communication open and that assistance - if you should need it is just a call away. Sold at Kroger, the plan includes a TracFone Big Easy Flip phone that makes dialing easy, 800 minutes, a year of service, a hands-free headset and a car and wall charger, and costs only $79.99 vs. a retail value of $149.99. To learn more about the cost-saving options available from TracFone, including the StaySafe bundle pack, visit www.TFStaySafe.com. Stay healthy. Medical bills can get expensive very quickly, so maintaining good health is essential to managing your budget. Take a cooking class, join a gym or make positive changes to your diet. Anything you do to protect your good health will pay dividends in the years ahead. Practice moderation. Budgeting can feel constraining, but you don't want to deny yourself the simple luxuries in your retirement. There's no need to tighten the belt, but everyone can benefit from moderation. Instead of taking trips every year, plan for every other year. If eating out is your ideal treat, cut back to once a week as opposed to multiple nights out. Exercising moderation will help you manage your money and make those moments when you do indulge even more savory. Control your debt. Don't throw your years of hard work away by falling into the trap of debt. Keeping credit card use to a minimum is one way to protect against debt, and if you do have outstanding debt, allocate excess money to pay down debts with the highest interest rate first. Then, move on to the second-highest interest rate. This will reduce your overall debt more quickly. By understanding your budget and planning accordingly, you'll make the most of your retirement and establish financial security for the months and years ahead. Last year’s events included program support from state Sen. Jeanie Forester, state Rep. Al Baldasaro, combat veteran of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars Amber Barno, National Gold Star Mothers Karen Vaughn and Natalie Healy. The “Thank A Vet” event series is designed to give thanks to New Hampshire’s military heroes and their families while discussing the pressing issues facing veterans every day. Mayor Ken Merrifield was on hand at the May 17 showing of the film to talk about the great things Franklin is doing to recognize veterans by discussing an ongoing Civil War restoration project. His presence kicked off the “Thank A Vet” summer series for CVA NH at Tilton’s Smitty’s Cinema, where more than 50 area veterans were in attendance to bring the message of hope and support to each other, discussing issues ranging from the waitlist scandal in the VA health care system to memories of fallen fellow soldiers. “Mayor Merrifield was enthusiastic John Stark Regional High School Observed Memorial Day on Friday May 22 with an all school assembly. Performances will take place in May and June 2015. Seniors are the fastest growing segment of the New England population – they are also the most avid attendees of live performances – yet many are no longer able to travel, or have limited access to live performances. By bringing the production to them, Pontine addresses an important, though often overlooked constituency. Pontine Theatre specializes in creating original plays based on the history and literature of New England. Several years ago the company created New England Utopia which explores the 19th century New England Transcendentalist Movement founded by Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau and Bronson Alcott (father of Louisa May). Pontine’s play particularly looked at three communities established by these uniquely American philosophers: the movement that grew up around Emerson in Concord MA, Brook Farm in West Roxbury MA, and Fruitlands in Harvard MA. Programs related to New England subjects are of deep interest to Seacoast audiences. They engage both intellect and memory, leading to lively, stimulating discussions. They also have a deeper therapeutic value. Many seniors who reside at nursing homes and assisted living communities have lost family, friends and homes. They often battle depression and feelings of isolation. Arts programs help to keep seniors connected to the larger world around them by stimulating curiosity, bringing them together in positive and engaging activity, Save Now On A Walk-In Bath Or Easy Access Shower e Sa o fr m a EV vi ng nt a ia e ph lif astro ES! lc at IN UT I live alone po te Y ER 10 M and reminding them of the value of their own heritage. Humanist & Agnostic Discussion Group Thursday, July 16 1:30pm The word “atheist” has negative connotations – being against something. But many “atheists” are not against the idea of God, but rather FOR a reasoned and logical search for spiritual meaning in life. They want to start at the beginning, with no preconceptions about religion or deities, and ask what if anything makes spiritual sense. Often these agnostics feel very lonely. Everyone else seems to have all their spiritual ducks in a row; they know exactly what they believe to be the “truth.” The agnostics are made to feel “out of it.” All they can do is quote Sportn’ Life in Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess” when he famously sang, “It Ain’t Necessarily So.” People who say that it ain’t necessarily so are often challenged with “Why can’t you be like everyone else? You’re just an anti-social trouble-maker.” This is the group for anti-social trouble-makers. We seek people who want to ask the difficult questions about religion and spirituality. Why do humans, alone in the world as a species, seek divine governance? Where does this come from and what kind of gods did we create in response to this need? How is it that people believe what they do? Is there anything worth believing in, or is it all nonsense? In order to feel comfortable in this group one needs to agree to two premises. First, the world is as we detect it through our senses. Second, truth emerges through the use of the scientific method. We take hard data and massage it through reasoned logic to approach the truth, which we will never really know for sure. Come discuss your ideas of religion and spirituality. Bring your questions and be prepared to change your mind. Please call COA at 526-6368 to sign up. Page 16 | Senior lifestyles | june 2015 Wyman Tavern Festival in Keene on Sat. June 20 “Welcome to the eighteenth century,” says Cornelia Jenness to visitors as they enter the grounds of the Wyman Tavern Festival. Jenness, a former board president of the Historical Society of Cheshire County, has attended every Wyman Tavern Festival since the first one in 2012, which commemorated the 250th year since the tavern was built in 1762. Jenness dresses in period clothes for the festival as do many of the volunteers. “It’s the neatest thing,” says Jenness about the festival, which is scheduled this year for Saturday, June 20th from 10 am to 4 pm. “It gives you a feeling of going back in time. It makes you understand what things were like back then, and it gives you a perspective of how things have changed. I love to see people at the festival doing activities and learning things.” she says. The Wyman Tavern Festival is a family-friendly event. Kids can card wool, churn butter, make corn husk dolls, and do cordage. They can learn about eighteenth century “deportment” such as how you would have greeted and addressed someone in the 1700’s, and they can play eighteenth century games. The Hinsdale Garrison Company will be camped on the grounds of the Tavern, sharing their knowledge of family life in the 1700’s through hearth cooking, sewing, candle making, needle hitching, period games, and care and maintenance of muskets for protection and hunting. Eighteenth century music is a big part of the Wyman Tavern Festival, from fife and drum music to period dance. Priscilla Borden will call traditional dances in the carriage shed with Sam and Sara Foucher accompanying on fiddles. The Nelson Shape Note Singers will perform their distinctive harmonies from arrangements written over 200 years ago, and Hunt and Allison Smith will walk around the grounds playing Revolutionary War era jigs and reels. A cooper, a milliner, a flint knapper, a chair rusher, and woodworker will practice their crafts. R.P. Hale from Penacook will set up a replica of an eighteenth century printing press and make original prints of a drawing of the Wyman Tavern which will be available for purchase. There will be live sheep, spinning of wool, and weaving. The Wyman Tavern’s famous rhubarb coolers will be available, and the Keene High Interact Club will be cooking 21st century lunches. A $5 donation is suggested for the Wyman Tavern Festival and the public is welcome. The Wyman Tavern is located at 339 Main Street in Keene, New Hampshire. Luckily, your metabolism doesn't solely depend on factors out of your control such as genetics, age, or gender. Modifying your exercise habits and making wiser food choices are two ways anyone can achieve a faster metabolism and a smaller waistline. Increased physical activity affects the metabolism more than anything else but before you opt to take the stairs over the elevator make sure you are fueling your body with the energy it needs. A great first step is to examine your diet and understand which foods will give you long-lasting energy to help you move more during the day and burn more calories. "When making changes to your diet, aim to eat an energy-revving complex carbohydrate with a nutrient-rich protein," says personal trainers and registered dietitians Lyssie Lakatos and Tammy Lakatos Shames - "The Nutrition Twins". "For example, we recommend pairing oatmeal with a healthy protein like Eggland's Best eggs. Compared to ordinary eggs, EB eggs contain the same amount of protein with only 60 calories, aiding in fat loss; more nutrients like omega-3s, contributing to satiety and weight loss; and vitamin B12 which assists in producing energy to power metabolism" Here are some foods The Nutrition Twins recommend to help boost your metabolism: Eggs The satiating and blood sugar stabilizing protein found in eggs helps keep you full and extends the power boost from carbohydrates like oats. Chose Eggland's Best eggs over ordinary eggs because they provide three times more vitamin B12, a nutrient that assists the body in creating energy, as well as double the omega-3s which stimulate leptin, a hormone that increases feelings of fullness. Oats The complex carbohydrates in oats fuel your brain and your body. Without them, your metabolism will suffer because you'll have very little energy to be active and burn calories. Oats are also fiber-filled which helps extend energy levels. Berries Berries, such as blackberries and strawberries, taste great and contain the phytochemical known as Cyanidin-3glucoside (C3G). Research shows C3G aids in the production of both adiponectin, which enhances fat metabolism, and leptin, which suppresses appetite. And with many homeowners staying in their houses for an average of 13 years, your home will surely need some sprucing up to add to its curb appeal. By following a these simple steps, you can increase your home's value without breaking the bank. Rejuvenate the outdoor living area. Before making a trip to your local home center, make sure to wash the dirt, mildew and general grime off the outside of your house. A power washer is a great tool to help clean siding and renew the surface of decks. A good washing will also bring out the true color of a beautiful flagstone walkway or patio. Invest in the best tools for the job. One of the most useful tools in creating curb appeal is a hose. From power washing your deck and siding to maintaining your lawn and garden, your hose takes more abuse than any other tool. The Gilmour Flexogen hose is perfect for a variety of outdoor applications and is the strongest hose in its class. Its durable eight-layer construction is ideal for homeowners who put their tools to the test season after season. Give your yard a manicure. When its best features are hidden by an overgrown lawn or shrubs, your home can appear uninviting. It is recommended to regularly mow grass to a length of two and a half to three inches. This not only helps the grass to grow, but it also provides for a thicker lawn to prevent weeds. Adding landscaping bricks around the border of your garden and flowerbeds also gives your lawn a more premium look. Add seasonal color with the right vegetation. When choosing plants and flowers, consider what they will look like during different times of the year. For an all-season curb appeal, plant shrubs and flowers that offer colorful fall foliage or leaves with unique textures when not in full bloom. To help you get the best visual results, scout out the ideal locations around your yard before planting. Be sure to account for areas that are always in the sun or are well-shaded. Maintain the look. One of the key steps to preserving a healthy lawn and garden is to provide at least one inch of water per week through a regular watering schedule. You'll want to choose a hose that has the durability to last even after you've moved into your new home. Gilmour Flexogen's patented construction allows for all-weather performance and delivers maximum functionality in temperatures as low as 45 degrees Fahrenheit. But recently he embarked on a journey he calls the PD Challenge -- a bike ride from British Colombia to San Francisco to raise awareness of Parkinson's disease. His message to others with Parkinson's is powerfully simple - stay active, be your own advocate, keep a positive attitude, and don't give up hope. As a former personal trainer, Roden says staying active is critical and credits exercise with making him stronger both mentally and physically. The benefits of physical activity are well established in Parkinson's disease, and it's no coincidence that Roden chose a cycling trek for the PD Challenge. "There was a time when I couldn't care for myself, let alone engage in the activities I love, and I'm determined to do something bigger than myself," Roden said. Roden was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2009. His symptoms worsened over time until he couldn't brush his teeth or feed himself, let alone live his once active life filled with exercise, travel and the outdoors. He was taking 10 medications daily with waning effectiveness and debilitating side effects that even made it difficult for him to concentrate on a game of Monopoly with his children. But today, life is an inspiring ride for 57-year-old Roy. To manage his Parkinson's disease, Roden decided to pursue Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) therapy, a treatment option that when used with medications may improve quality of life and motor function more than medications alone, and may allow medication reduction. The therapy uses a surgically implanted medical device, similar to a cardiac pacemaker, to deliver electrical stimulation to precisely targeted areas of the brain to reduce some of the most disabling motor symptoms associated with Parkinson's disease, including shaking, stiffness and movement difficulties. "I wouldn't be able to do this without DBS, as it gave me my life back. Along the ride people ask about my connection to Parkinson's and are surprised when I tell them I have it." After receiving DBS Therapy, Roden said that his quality of life and symptoms, such as shaking hands and difficulty walking, have noticeably improved. As a result, Roden was inspired to accomplish something extraordinary and offer hope to other Parkinson's patients. Wyman Tavern Museum Thus, the PD Challenge was born. "In the absence of a cure, my goal is to educate people with Parkinson's about the opportunities they have to live an active life with this debilitating disease," said Roy. "DBS therapy is an important treatment option for Parkinson's disease that has stood the test of time as an FDA approved therapy. It consistently allows those suffering to experience lasting improvements that make their quality of life meaningfully better," said Jonathan Jagid, M.D., Associate Professor of Clinical Neurological Surgery, Neurology, Orthopaedics & Rehabilitation at the University of Miami Health System, and also Roy's neurosurgeon. "Roy has had great results and his efforts to give back are an inspiring example to the Parkinson's community nationwide." Results with the therapy vary, and not every individual will receive the same benefits or experience the same complications. Patients should discuss potential risks and benefits of DBS with their physician. Medtronic DBS Therapy is the only FDA-approved DBS therapy in the United States for Parkinson's disease, as well as essential tremor and dystonia (through a Humanitarian Device Exemption). 180 acres of Scenic Splendor in the Heart of New Hampshire’s White Mountains 339 Main street Keene, NH Resort Units with 50” HDTV’s and Private Scenic Balconies Indoor Heated Pool Live Entertainment Outdoor Heated Pool -OPEN ALL YEAR Open June 4th—August 29 Thurs-Saturday 11am-4pm June 20th 10-4pm ~ Wyman Tavern Festival July 20-24 and/or July 27-31 ~ 18th Century Kids Camp August 8th ~ Brew Fest September 25 ~ Candlelight Open House Historical Society of Cheshire County www.hsccnh.org or call 603.352.1895 Profile Dining Room Best of Chef’s Competition Winner 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 Wedding Destination of the North Country Exit 33 off I-93, Lincoln, NH 03251 800-343-8000 www.indianheadresort.com Page 20 | Senior lifestyles | june 2015 out & about Pizza & Movie Night June 12, 2015 6:00 PM $5-$15 sliding scale suggested donation. 218 Streeter Woods Rd Dorchester, NH 03266 Phone: 603-786-2366 Join us for an all-you-should-eat, wood-fired, farm-fresh pizza, buffet-style! then sit back and enjoy a film selected for it's thought provoking abilities.
