Beginning with our youngest classes,
the Pre-Grammar program focuses on
laying a solid foundation. Training a
child how to go to school will
encourage and produce successful
learners throughout his/her
educational journey. We emphasize
building upon a child’s readiness to
learn in age appropriate,
developmental stages. Our program
consists of presenting academic
concepts through multi-sensory
activities, making certain to reach
all types of learners in a fun and
engaging environment. Play is a
child’s best work and therefore we
provide hands-on experiences in all
areas of learning. We believe in
training the whole child. Therefore,
we fully commit to helping children
grow cognitively, physically,
emotionally, socially, and most
importantly, spiritually. The Bible
says that Jesus grew and developed
in this same manner. Luke 2:52 states
that “Jesus grew in wisdom, stature,
and in favor with God and man.”
Our goal is to provide a learning
environment where every area of
development is strengthened.
SCHOOL GARDEN
Students enjoy “getting dirty” in this
outdoor classroom where planting,
tending, and harvesting activities are
an integral part of the Pre-Grammar
instructional program.
CORE CURRICULUM
In the Pre-Grammar School, great emphasis is placed on the context
of learning. Because learning occurs on a moment-to-moment basis
in the early childhood classroom, everything that happens during
the student’s day is considered curriculum. Therefore, providing
a wonderfully enriched classroom environment, availability to
materials, consistent routines, and planned daily schedules/activities
are all an effective part in educating the child. Among the curriculum
framework of our program, plans and lessons are guided by
published curriculum texts. Teachers utilize these curricular tools
to enhance the overall learning experience. Some of these key texts
are listed below.
PK3 – BJU’s Pathways for Preschool; Purposeful Design’s Preschool Bible
PK4 – Saxon’s Early Learning; Positive Action’s Exploring God’s Love
Kindergarten – Saxon’s Phonics & Spelling; Singapore’s Math In Focus,
Positive Action’s Learning About God; Nancy Larson’s Science;
SRA’s Open Court Reading & Language Arts; Schoolhouse Secrets
Unlimited’s Writing House
Pre-First – Saxon’s Phonics & Spelling; Singapore’s Math In Focus;
Positive Action’s Enjoying God’s Gifts; Purposeful Design’s
Science; Learning A to Z Reading
Implementing a curriculum that meets individual developmental
needs, while providing a range of learning experiences, is of great
importance to us. Therefore our program is based upon each of the
following components that are considered essential building blocks
for growth and will help measure individual student progress
throughout the year: emotional/social development; language/early
literacy development; mathematical skills; discovery/science skills;
motor skills; and spiritual development/Bible skills.

PARENT COMMUNICATION
Weekly Newsletter (class-specific) is sent home in student’s folder.
Pre-Grammar School News (school specific announcements) is emailed out via RenWeb
twice a month. Teachers also communicate regularly via emails and phone calls.
DISCIPLINE
Our philosophy of discipline is
redemptive in nature. We want to
provide an atmosphere that is both
preventive and corrective with the
goal of encouraging students to
develop self-control.
The Tuesday Note (school-wide announcements) is emailed out via RenWeb weekly
and is available on our website.
The Cougar ROAR is a rewards-based
system used to encourage positive
behavior. An age-appropriate, positive
as well as a negative, consequence
system is used that includes privileges,
rewards, warnings, time out,
community service, and parent
notification.
Pre-First is a class available by recommendation only. This class provides a bridge for
students who have completed Kindergarten and need an additional year of growth
and development before entering Grade 1. Older 5-year old students may also be
recommended for this class if they meet pre-reading criteria.

Required Parent-Teacher conferences are conducted twice a year (scheduled in
October and January) and include a written evaluation/progress report/report card.
For the remainder of the year, conferences with any teacher can be arranged, as
needed, through the school office.
PRE-FIRST
TESTING
Students applying for Kindergarten and Pre-First are screened by a trained observer
using the Gesell Developmental Assessment. Results of this assessment along with the
teacher’s recommendation and parental input enable the school to make appropriate
placement decisions. Kindergarten and Pre-First students will complete a standardized
achievement test (TerraNova3) in the spring. Those teachers also use the DRA
(Developmental Reading Assessment) to evaluate reading levels and progress
throughout the year.

SCHOOL GARDEN
The school garden is an integral part
of the Grammar School instructional
program at Covenant. Each grade
level has their own bed to design,
plant, tend, and harvest as gardening
activities are integrated throughout
the year in all areas of curriculum.
Covenant students enjoy “getting
dirty” while learning in their outdoor
classroom.
CORE CURRICULUM
Bible: Christian Schools International Walking with God and
His People - Students build on their foundation of Bible
knowledge by studying Old and New Testament scriptures.
Students begin each day with prayer and memorize Bible verses.
Students also attend weekly chapel to encourage a maturing
faith and daily walk with the Lord.
Language Arts: Pearson Saxon Phonics and Spelling - provides
systematic phonics instruction that ensures mastery of the
important foundational skills of phonics, phonemic awareness,
spelling, alphabetizing, handwriting, and fluency. Open Court
Reading and whole novel studies are also used to provide quality,
literature-based instruction in reading strategies, reading
comprehension, vocabulary development, the writing process,
and composition in a variety of genres and styles. Shurley
Grammar instruction, using memorization and jingles,
ensures mastery of the parts of speech and proper sentence
structure which enables students to become proficient speakers
and writers.
Social Studies: Beginning Geography - (grade 1) explores the
earth God created and provides the foundation for later, more
in-depth studies of the seven continents (grades 2 – 4). Veritas
Press History, Core Knowledge, and other compiled materials
enable students in grades 2 – 4 to explore God’s plan throughout history as they progress chronologically through a study
of creation, early Mesopotamian civilizations, Ancient Egypt,
Old Testament Israel, Ancient Greece and Rome, Medieval times,
the Reformation, and the Renaissance.
Mathematics: Singapore’s Math in Focus highlights problemsolving as the key focus of mathematical learning. Concepts are
introduced through hands-on experiences with manipulatives.
Students learn to visualize the concept and represent it pictorially
through models before moving on to abstract numbers and symbols.
Science: Nancy Larson Science – Inductive, hands-on
study of God’s handiwork through observation, classification,
experiments, and evaluation of data. Students survey life,
physical, and earth and space science concepts.
Testing: ERB – Yearly comprehensive achievement testing
for 1st – 4th grades provides a complete battery of tests in all
academic areas.

C
ovenant Christian Academy is an independent, non-denominational,
Christian, college preparatory day school founded in 1979. We serve
grades Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12. Our classical curriculum
combines a rigorous academic program with exemplary fine arts and
outstanding athletics. This curriculum ultimately directs students to
emulate the perfect excellence found in Christ.
DISTINCTIVES
We are a Christian community who firmly believe in the importance
of a Covenant Education, where the parents form a partnership
with our school to educate their children. Our goal is to provide
each student with a distinctively Christian, classical, college
preparatory education. We seek to inspire students to think
critically in the context of a biblical worldview by not sheltering
them but by equipping them in the light of scriptural truth. Our
desire is that they would grow in wisdom and apply God’s Word
in every area of their lives, becoming leaders to transform
communities for the glory of God.
Our Humanities program provides an intensive study of universal
themes found in the great writings, people, and events that have
formed and reformed Western Civilization. Normative works
of our culture are studies within their historical settings. This
helps students understand how the works and the people who
wrote them were influenced by their times, and vice versa. The
courses are organized chronologically, moving from the ancient
civilizations to modern times and integrated with language, art,
and music. All History and English courses are taught at the
Honors or Advanced Placement level in the Logic and Rhetoric
Schools.

MISSION STATEMENT
We Believe...
the Bible to be the inspired, only infallible,
authoritative, inerrant Word of God.
(2 Timothy 3:16, 2 Peter 1:21)
The Mission of Covenant Christian Academy is to provide a
biblically based, classical, college preparatory education that
inspires a passion for excellence, a heart of grace, and the
character of Christ.
We Believe...
there is one God, eternally existent in three
persons - Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
(Genesis 1:1, Matthew 28:19, John 10:30)
We Believe...
in the deity of Christ (John 10:33), His
virgin birth (Isaiah 7:14, Matthew 1:23,
Luke 1:35), His sinless life (Hebrews 4:15,
7:26), His miracles (John 2:11), His
vicarious and atoning death
(1 Corinthians 15:3, Hebrews 2:9), His
resurrection (John 11:25, 2 Corinthians 13:4),
His ascension to the right hand of the
Father (Mark 16:19), and His personal
return in power and glory. (Acts 1:11,
Revelation 19:11)
We Believe...
in the absolute necessity of regeneration
by the Holy Spirit for salvation because
of the exceeding sinfulness of human
nature and that men are justified on the
single ground of faith in the shed blood
of Christ and that only by God's grace
and through faith we are saved.
(John 3:16-21, 5:24, Romans 3:23, 5:8-9,
Ephesians 2:3-10, Titus 3:5)
We Believe...
in the resurrection of both the saved and
the lost; the saved unto the resurrection
of life and the lost unto the resurrection
of damnation. (John 5:28-29)
