Washington, MD Volume 24, No. 01 January 2016 St. John’s 3rd Annual Craft Fair Brightened the Holiday Season Handmade jewelry and crafts, bratwurst and cider and the St. John’s bake sale were the highlights of this year’s Craft Fair. Best of all was the opportunity for fellowship within and beyond the St. John’s community. Many thanks to the Outreach Committee and the over 24 volunteers who provided their time and energy to make this year’s Craft Fair such a pleasurable event. You ‘all come back next year! Susan Petroff Happy New Year 2016 Next Adult Forum Focuses On Islam And The Koran St. John's Episcopal Church - King George's Parish Annual Meeting - 2016 The Annual Meeting of King George’s Parish for election of Wardens, and Vestry members, and for transactions of other Parish business will be held in Bayne Hall on Sunday, January 31, 2016, following the 9:00a.m. service. (There will be only one service that day.) Please bring fruit, breads, pastries, etc. for a brunch prior to the meeting. Our next adult forum will be held on Sunday, January 24, at 9:15 in Bayne Hall. A buffet breakfast will be provided by the Parish Family Commission. The speaker will be Imam Johari Abdul-Malik. He will present a history of Islam and discuss the teaching and values found in the holy Koran. A Q&A discussion will follow the Imam’s talk. If a qualified voter shall be required by his or her principal employer, or for reasons of health, to be absent from the AnnualParish Meeting, he or she may cast an absentee ballot for the election of Wardens and Vestry Members. Imam Johari is the Director of Outreach at the Dar Al-Hijrah Islamic Center in Falls Church, Virginia, and former Muslim Chaplain at Howard University, the first Muslim officially installed as a chaplain in higher education at Howard. He is the Head of the National Association of Muslim Chaplains in Higher Education. The Imam also serves as the chair of government relations for the Muslim Alliance in North America. He is the director of community outreach for the Dar Al-Hijrah Islamic Center and President of the Muslim Society of Washington, Inc. The Voter’s List is posted in Bayne Hall. Steve Rorke On Sunday, January 10 at 4PM we will be holding our Epiphany Service and potluck supper. After an evening service in Bayne Hall we will gp outside to have a burning of the greens. Greens from our Church Christmas decorations will be burned. We will then return to Bayne hall for supper. The evening will be a revival of a past tradition here at St. John’s. We will welcome members of Grace Lutheran Church to celebrate with us. On Sunday, January 31st after a combined 9AM Eucharist, St’ John’s will conduct our annual meeting and election of Vestry. This year’s meeting will include the distribution of an annual report. The report has not been produced in several years and will revive a common parish tradition among Episcopal Parishes. Lunch will be served as part of the meeting and a budget report will be provided to the congregation. Thank you to one and all for making our Advent and Christmas celebrations meaningful and festive. Thanks especially to the Alter Guild for decorating the church and to the choir and Director of Music for their inspirational music. Happy New Year! On January 30th, members of the Vestry will accompany Charles Day, our Convention Delegate to the National Cathedral for the 121st Diocesan Convention. This year the Convention will last one day. The Bishop will present her plans for reorganizing the regions of the Diocese and discuss the need to increase pledge amounts among member parishes.
