The Oakwood School admits students of any race, color, national and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school. It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national and ethnic origin, in administration of its educational/admissions policies, scholarship, loan, athletic and other school-administered programs. The Oakwood School is a tax-exempt organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Our Federal tax identification number is 56-1938898. Bouncing into summer at Field Day From Rob’s Desk Head of School Message Dear Oakwood Parents and Friends, The 2013-2014 school year was a banner one for The Oakwood School. The Class of 2014 generated a stellar college placement record; the School completed a building project that added over 17,000 square feet of classroom space; our fundraising efforts raised record amounts; students enjoyed great successes in the classroom, academic competitions, athletic contests, arts presentations, and service activities; 11 new faculty members assimilated comfortably and happily into our Oakwood culture; student retention is at an all time high; and finally, Oakwood benefitted from the volunteer support of an incredibly active and appreciative parent community. I want to highlight two of the elements that made this past year such a remarkable success: philanthropic giving and the work of our dedicated, determined, and hardworking Board of Trustees. Philanthropic giving has become the hallmark of our young school. Our history is filled with stories of families who have given generously to help Oakwood grow and prosper. Today we have a 41-acre campus with four state-of-the-art buildings that house students from the pre-kindergarten through the twelfth grades. This is a far cry from the School’s humble beginning in the fall of 1996 when we opened our doors to 42 students in three portable classrooms. Since that date parents, grandparents, and friends have generously contributed more than $7 million dollars to buy land, construct buildings, create playing fields, and augment programs. Thanks to the largess of so many people, we have a beautiful facility that meets the needs of our students, teachers, and parents. Last May at our end-of-the-year assembly the Oakwood community honored many of the families who contributed leadership gifts to “Securing Oakwood’s Future.” This capital campaign raised more than $1 million dollars for the School, a figure that vividly demonstrates the confidence people have in Oakwood and the strong desire to help make us the best independent school in eastern North Carolina. Our Board of Trustees led by Eileen Van Houten displayed remarkable insight, vision, and leadership. The School is prospering because of the Board’s willingness and ability to imagine, dream, and plan a strong and exceptional future. The 20 members of the Board volunteer their time, expertise, and resources to strengthen the School. This past year was an extraordinary year for the Board with the new construction projects being a visible outcome of their interest in and desire to envision and embrace the future. They aggressively pursued and implemented the projects after identifying the pressing need for more classroom space, securing a favorable loan, and realizing that the School could proceed without a capital campaign. By February 2014, Oakwood students, teachers and programs were reaping enormous benefits. Looking back, it is amazing to consider all that was accomplished last year. Now it is time to celebrate The Oakwood School that opened its doors to 404 students for its 19th year and to look forward to a spectacular 2014-2015 school year. I thank all parents and friends for their faith in The Oakwood School and for helping make us the great school that we are. Sincerely, Robert R. Peterson Head of School Oakwood Quick Facts 2013-2014 Audited Financial Results - Expenses 2013-2014 Enrollment: 387 Instructional Faculty: 40 teachers 6 assistant teachers 1 learning specialist 61% of lead teachers with advanced degrees 16 years average teaching experience 7 years average tenure at Oakwood Student to Instructional Faculty Ratio: 8 to 1 Instructional Employee Cost - 44% Instructional Program - 67% General & Admin - 18% Maintenance & Plant - 17% Other Program Costs - 14% Tuition Assistance - 8% Revenue: Tuition & Fees - 89%, Fundraising 11% 2 A message from Our Board of Trustees Dear Oakwood Families and Friends, The Oakwood School has enjoyed yet another year of substantial growth, financial stability, and continued success. Careful spending and control of increasing costs led to comfortably meeting our budget. Analysis of our campus needs and careful mortgage debt management allowed us to make substantial additions to our campus buildings and grounds, as well as our programs in athletics, academics and the arts, without conducting a capital campaign. Every child of every age at Oakwood is benefiting from this campus growth. We have also secured important stability of leadership by signing a contract with our Head of School, Rob Peterson, stating that he will remain at Oakwood for a number of years to come. Rob’s educational and financial leadership has taken Oakwood from a struggling young institution to an established and successful school anticipating it’s 20th Anniversary in 2015-2016. The Board of Trustees thanks all of Oakwood’s families and friends for supporting the School’s successes this year and for inspiring the hope and plans we have for the Oakwood of tomorrow. Every ingredient that makes Oakwood the wonderful school that it is, from books and bricks to teachers and tennis balls, has been provided primarily by our parents through tuition, donations and gifts, along with support from grandparents and friends. Not only do you share your children and families with us; your gifts of time, talent and financial support are at the foundation of Oakwood. The Board of Trustees takes its name very literally. Our families and donors TRUST us with their donations of money, much as they trust our faculty and staff with their children. Our primary tasks as a Board are to handle your tuition and donations wisely and to insure that your dollars are used to pursue our school’s mission to “instill in its students the strength of character, the creativity and the wisdom to make a difference in the world.” At the close of each school year, the Board requires an intensive annual financial audit conducted by an independent accounting firm, which is thoroughly reviewed and understood. We work hard to live up to the trust that you place in us, and we understand that both attending Oakwood and giving to Oakwood are choices you make carefully. With regard to our mission as a school, the Board is very focused on where we are headed and why. Our focus for the coming year is to finalize our new Strategic Plan. This Plan focuses on our mission and will set specific goals in our efforts to meet that mission, including describing established needs we must address, such as quality teachers, core curriculum offerings, financial stability and basic facilities, and additional “wants” we also value highly, such as a new gym, a dedicated theater space and other enhancements to our programs that would be desirable to enrich our children’s experiences at Oakwood. The Plan will outline the steps we will take to address these needs and wants, a time line, and how we will pay for them. These goals will include meeting needs through our operating budget, which relies primarily on tuition income, while adding “wants” as we can through fundraising. We will be seeking guidance from our families and friends this year as we finalize our new Strategic Plan, as it is our goal to take Oakwood where you want it to go, and to make sure that it is even more outstanding for our grandchildren. We encourage your input as we conduct surveys and open forums in 2014-2015 and look forward to including your voice in Oakwood’s plans and hopes for the future. Sincerely, Eileen M. Van Houten President, Board of Trustees Mother of Carolyn Van Houten (Class of 2009) 3 As part of the September ground-breaking, Upper School students sign a beam that is now part of the Speight Student Commons. Securing Oakwood’s Future Capital Campaign 2011-2014 The Securing Oakwood’s Future Capital Campaign was a carefully crafted plan to put the school in the strongest financial position possible for the future. Through the generosity of our community, we ensure that Oakwood continues to flourish and build upon its reputation as the finest educational option in eastern North Carolina. Thanks to the hard work and dedi- cation of many volunteers and the generosity of our community, we raised $1,037,012, Oakwood’s most successful capital campaign to date! Thirty-five Middle and Upper School students received need-based tuition assistance. These students and their families enriched the socioeconomic diversity and also gave back to Oakwood. They paid a cumulative $164,950 to the school in tuition, donated to the annual fund, spent countless hours volunteering on campus, participated in academic and athletic competitions, performed on the Monk Gymnasium stage, filled our hallways with their artwork, contributed to lively class discussions, and were a critical part of our community. These students blend perfectly in our culture. They are Caucasian, African-American, multi-racial and Middle Eastern. They are scholars, athletes, artists, student government representatives, leaders, and friends. In addition, The Oakwood School has awarded 50 merit scholarships since 2008. The Annual Merit Scholarship Competition is open to Oakwood’s 8th grade students as well as to rising area 9th through 12th grade students who plan to attend Oakwood’s Upper School. Applicants are evaluated on academic merit, leadership and service. Congratulations to our 2013-2014 Merit Scholarship winners: Jeevan Tewari, Alex Adler, Hayley Allen, Briscoe Robinette, Jordan Cox, and Sarah Nimmo. During the 2013-2014 school year both of Oakwood’s major events, the Eagle Classic All Sports Tournament and the Blue Jean Ball Auction & Gala raised funds for financial aid. Between the two events more than $80,000 was raised and covered nearly 30% of Oakwood’s financial aid budget. Thank you to the volunteers, sponsors and event participants who helped to forward the School’s mission through merit and need-based scholarships at Oakwood! 8 The Traditional Oakwood Auction Transformed! Last spring we enjoyed bluegrass music, signature cocktails, and the fantastic atmosphere of a transformed Oakwood tradition. Building on the foundation of years of successful auctions, this year’s committee created an Oakwood signature event, the Blue Jean Ball. Not only did the Blue Jean Ball raise more than $50,000 to benefit merit and need-based scholarships at The Oakwood School but sponsors and donors contributed $31,082 towards equipment and supplies for Oakwood’s science program and $1,500 for one of Oakwood’s community partners, The First Born Community Development Center, a food bank in Grimesland. Thank you to all of the volunteers, sponsors, item donors and attendees who helped to make this year’s event such a success!
