PARIS, CAPITAL OF SHOPPING
Shopping is one of the main motivations for a city break in Paris and with good reason. As
the European capital for shopping, fashion and design, Paris has some 17,000 shops —
including 5,500 in the ready-to-wear sector alone. With major department stores, historic
and top luxury brands and famous shopping districts, Paris is an amazing shopping
destination 365 days a year.
Historically, Paris has always been a major reference for fashion and luxury, and all the
major international brands have a flagship store here.
NEW TRENDS, NEW ADDRESSES
> Selection of new openings
Every week, new shops with exciting and trendy layouts open in Paris. Top brands know
that the French capital is still a shopping destination par excellence, on both sides of the
Seine.
2014 was marked by a raft of boutique openings, on the Right Bank and the Left Bank. The
6th arrondissement in particular saw a string of new names in chic streets in and around
Saint-Germain-des-Prés: Moncler, Upla, Kiehl’s, Le Creuset, La Perla, Swildens …
A wind of change is blowing in the district, due in part to the opening of the Maison
Kitsuné, the record label, which opened its first boutique close to Odéon and whose
clothing brand is enjoying great success. H&M has chosen boulevard Saint-Germain for one
of its biggest stores in France. Louis Vuitton has extended the boutique adjoining the Deux
Magots, opposite the church, incorporating a ready-to-wear space with collections created
by Nicolas Ghesquière. In 2015, other changes will take place in the district: a third
AppleStore will open in Paris, in the Marché de Saint-Germain, which will also house a
Marks & Spencer.
There is plenty happening on the other side of the river, especially in the Marais. Firstly
with Uniqlo, the Japanese brand of clothing for men and women, which has converted one
of the last factories in the district into an 800 m² temple for fashion. 2015 heralds lots of
changes in the southern part of this lively district, close to the newly revamped BHV/Marais
and its BHV/Marais L’Homme. Numerous luxury fashion brands (Gucci, Fendi, Givenchy)
and contemporary ready-to-wear brands (Moncler, Nike) are opening their boutiques for
men, from spring onwards, in rue des Archives. One of the first to open will be the chic
hipster The Kooples, which will open on the site of the former newsagent’s Agora, not far
from the Karl Lagerfeld concept store, which opened in the district at the end of 2013.
In the Haut-Marais, near the new Place de la République, a new project is underway. A
veritable organic and sustainable local district under the name La Jeune Rue is currently
taking shape, in and around rue du Vertbois. To date 3 addresses have opened this year and
some 30 or so other boutiques and restaurants are set to follow. Further west, on the
Champs-Elysées, a wave of new Parisian flagship stores seems to be unfurling. After the
jeweller Tiffany & Co, at the beginning of 2014, the luxury leather goods house Longchamp
has opened its biggest boutique in Europe on the avenue, and the elegant French ready-towear brand Céline has chosen the prestigious avenue Montaigne for its flagship.
On quite another scale, the trend in recent years in numerous pop-up boutiques and
temporary shops shows no sign of waning. One such example is the Pop’Store Courrèges on
rue de Sèvres until spring 2015. And the master rubber craftsman Aigle has its temporary
boutique, L’atelier Aigle, near the Canal Saint-Martin: the store sells the brand’s famous
wellingtons and outdoor clothing as well as other brands such as Levi's.

> Saint-Germain des Prés, Sèvres-Babylone, rue de Rennes: an eclectic
mix
For a shopping spree in the heart of Paris, the districts of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, SèvresBabylone and rue de Rennes are a must. Haute couture and ready-to-wear — everything is
here! On boulevard Saint-Germain and surrounding streets, the store windows of grand
couturiers vie with each other: Giorgio Armani, Sonia Rykiel, Burberry, Ralph Lauren, Karl
Lagerfeld, A.P.C., Carven, Vicomte A., Jérôme Dreyfuss. On rue de Rennes, there is a
line-up of major brands including Zara, Etam, H&M, Kookaï and Caroll, Comptoir des
Cotonniers, joined on the first part of the road by prestigious brands like Hackett, Kenzo
and the perfumer Jo Malone.
Moncler, known for its trendy padded down-filled jacket, opened its first Left Bank
boutique on boulevard Saint-Germain in 2014. Nearby, Upla has given a funkier look to its
famous multi-pocketed messenger bag called a ‘fisherman’s pouch’, in a new boutique close
to the Café de Flore. In 2014, Souleiado, renowned in particular for its Provencal fabrics,
has renovated the boutique that it has occupied for 40 years in rue de Seine to make it a
concept store that also sells other brands and products from Provence.
Opposite the remarkable Hermès Rive Gauche store, on rue de Sèvres, Kiehl’s has just
opened a new boutique selling plant-based cosmetics. A few steps away, Le Bon Marché
department store boasts more than 25,000 products — mostly exceptional and luxury. As for
Inès de la Fressange, a new boutique is planned to open in spring in Saint-Germain-des-Prés.

> Haussmann-Opéra, the heart of Parisian shopping
The Haussmann-Saint-Lazare-Opéra district is a leading urban shopping area — the
commercial heart of the capital. It is home to major department stores, and new shops
regularly open here. Founded in 1912, Galeries Lafayette showcases the latest fashion
trends over three floors, big luxury brands, a menswear department (Lafayette Homme) and
a fifth floor devoted to children. Lafayette Gourmet moved into the Lafayette Maison store
in the autumn and now offers even more fine food products and kitchen items. The
Printemps department store also puts an emphasis on luxury. Upscale accessory and fashion
brands include Alexander McQueen, Prada, Louis Vuitton and Red Valentino.
Rue Scribe, next to the Palais Garnier Opera House, also remains a prime strip for
fashionistas. The Japanese unisex brand Uniqlo, the women’s wear shop Maje, and Eric
Bompard, the specialist in jumpers and cashmere clothes, can be found here. On the corner
of rue Scribe and boulevard des Capucines, the former anglo-saxon department store Old
England is now an upscale multi-brand watch store: Bucherer showcases 23 top watch
brands over six floors, including Piaget, IWC, Panerai, Longines, Rolex, Tag Heuer and
Jaeger-LeCoultre as well as a watchmaker’s workshop.

> Marais, hip fashion wear
Trendy, design and fashion-designer boutiques have given the Marais its avant-garde
reputation. Strolling around the district is a pleasant experience. Several streets such as the
rue des Rosiers are pedestrianized, and the rue des Francs-Bourgeois and rue du Temple are
closed to motorized traffic on Sunday. The Marais boasts numerous fashion brands: COS,
Vanessa Bruno, Isabel Marant, The Kooples, Maje, Sandro, Repetto, Zadig & Voltaire.
In recent years especially, the Haut Marais has seen the arrival of major ready-to-wear
fashion brands, including Erotokritos, Sandro and Leon & Harper as well as the designer
Stella Cadente, on boulevard Beaumarchais. Not far from here, the elegant and trendy
concept store Merci sells clothes and decorative objects and has two catering areas. A little
higher up, the Bonton brand, specializing in clothes for children, has opened a concept
store entirely devoted to children: gifts, accessories, fashion, and even a hairdresser. The
most recent concept store in the Marais is The Broken Arm, a shop cum cafe selling design
accessories and fashion brands like Carven, Kenzo and Christophe Lemaire. The American
label J.Crew is also due to open its first shop in France in March.
There are also lots of boutiques selling skin care products and perfume in the district, like
Aesop, Kiehl's, Acqua di Parma, Diptyque, Guerlain, Jo Malone and Annick Goutal. The
boutique Liquides, offers a ‘perfume bar’ with rare essences and perfume from
independent perfume makers.
Among the newest names in the area are Causses, which opened its second Parisian food
shop in 2014 in the Haut Marais, and the new label Ellips, which is now selling its on-trend
ballet flats and ankle boots a stone’s throw away from Saint-Paul metro station. And Cire
Trudon, an increasingly popular brand (despite its long history), sells scented candles near
rue des Rosiers.
As mentioned above, the south of the Marais is going to see some changes in 2015, with the
arrival of several men’s fashion labels such as Gucci and Givenchy in the streets around the
BHV/Marais. This historic department store has recently changed its name and its look. Its
new style, more modern and metropolitan, fits perfectly with the creative, hipster
atmosphere of the area.

PARIS SHOPPING

Village atmosphere, bobo spirit and vintage boutiques … So-Pi (for South of Pigalle) is Paris’s
up-and-coming district. The popular rue des Martyrs links the 9th arrondissement and
Montmartre. Adjacent streets have several renowned vintage shops like Zac & Sam for men
or Chezelle and Rétro Chic. Shoe and handbag designer Karine Arabian has her historic
shop in this district. And optician and fashion designer Marc Le Bihan and jewellery
designer Jean-François Mimilla share a space featuring eyewear, accessories and handmade clothing. In 2014, the young talented jewellery designer Victoria de Bouchony set up
her workshop-boutique Le Bazar Exquis on rue Manuel. The area also has several ‘miniconcept stores’, which market their personal selection. Like Place A, which rounds up
interior decor objects and other trendy gifts by international designers. Likewise for Sept
Cinq, the shop by two young design buffs, which promotes the work of young talented
Parisians. The boutique L’Œuf sells costume jewellery, women’s clothing and South Pigalle
brand products.
The Martyrs/Pigalle district also has many renowned local food shops. The bakery-patisseriecaterer Delmontel is now famous for its baguettes and its gourmet creations. Nearby, on
rue des Martyrs, the pastry chef Sebastien Gaudard excels with his own twist on the classic
Paris-Brest or Saint-Honoré. The very contemporary boutique Causses, on rue Notre-Dame
de Lorette, is a grocer and also makes soups, salads and sandwiches. Glazed is the area’s
new ice-cream maker, offering ice creams and sorbets in exciting flavours such as rum,
wasabi and Espelette chilli pepper.

> Palais-Royal and Saint-Honoré: trendy, chic and cutting-edge
The area between the Louvre, rue Royale, Opéra, the Palais Royal and rue Saint-Honoré is a
classic Paris shopping spot. Vintage haute couture at Didier Ludot, the doyen of the place,
with his famous little black dresses, luxury windows at Marc Jacobs, Rick Owens and Stella
McCartney. For trendy jeans, the dream address remains Acne Studios. The gardens of the
Palais-Royal are bordered by the Montpensier and Valois galleries, which are full of
renowned craftsmen and designers. Dresses are colourful at Jérôme L'Huillier and Jérôme
Dreyfuss showcases his highly-fashionable handbags there. As for shoe addicts, they head to
Pierre Hardy, Jimmy Choo or Christian Louboutin and his men’s boutique. Trendy brands,
such as Maje and Kitsuné for their clothes and accessories, have also chosen the district to
show off their collections. And rue Saint-Honoré remains a popular choice for big names in
fashion like Viktor & Rolf, Mulberry and lingerie designer Chantal Thomas.

> Montmartre, a Parisian walk and shopping
Around Montmartre and Sacré-Cœur, there are lots of opportunities to do a bit of shopping.
The boutique Mademoiselle Montmartre sells shoes, jewellery and handbags. Jewellery
fans, among others, will find plenty to please them at designer Emmanuelle Zysman’s shop,
at the little boutique Schade and at Corpus Christi. Ready-to-wear brands are also
plentiful: Ba&sh, Kookaï, Sandro, Leon & Harper and Karl Marc John on rue des Abbesses;
Antoine & Lili, Maje and Les Petites at the top of rue des Martyrs. Montmartre also has art
and craft venues like the concept store Spree, which mixes clothes, stylish furniture and an
art gallery. With its vintage boutiques, cafes and delightful delicatessen shops, this main
shopping street is a must. At Lulu et Brindille, parents will find clothes, soft toys and
decorative objects for 0-3 year-olds. For chocolate lovers, the Maison Georges Larnicol, in
rue Steinkerque, has its own little Chocolate Museum with original creations made out of
chocolate, including a giant Eiffel Tower!

> The 17th arrondissement
The area between Ternes and Parc Monceau is ideal for a day’s shopping. It has everything:
ready-to-wear, shoes, culture, fine food stores … Rue de Courcelles has Paul & Joe Sister,
Sandro, Sephora and Claudie Pierlot. It also caters for men, with the stylish shoes dreamt
up by J.M. Weston on boulevard de Courcelles or Nodus’s colourful and original shirts. In
2015, Tailor Corner, a brand new semi-bespoke company which started on the internet, will
open its flagship store on avenue Mac Mahon.
Further to the east, Batignolles is an up-and-coming district with a concentration of fashion
boutiques, products for children and the shop cum workshops of young designers between
rue des Dames, rue des Batignolles, rue Legendre and rue Lemercier. French Touche also
has objects and accessories by young Parisian designers. Four young designers are behind
the elegant shop 29 Février and its pretty clothes, jewellery and made-to-measure shoes,
all made in the Paris area. Not far from there, Superflu has an amazing little concept store
where you can find gifts, accessories and clothes as well as labels like Veja, Avril Gau and
Les Pipelettes.

2 – FASHION AND ACCESSORIES
> Up-and-coming designers
Paris has numerous designers of fashion, jewellery and luxury goods. Every year, trade fairs
and fashion shows reveal and sustain young talented designers. Established designers each
have one or several shops, like Alexis Mabille, Alexandre Vauthier and Bouchra Jarrar.
And popular newcomers include Maxime Simöens, Jacquemus, Vincent Schoepfer,
Gaspard Yurkievich, Valentine Gauthier, Eymele Burgaud and Baptiste Viry. Several
boutiques present diverse creations, like Hazar & Co with its ethnic-inspired jewellery and
textiles or the Robert M. Smith boutique, which offers bold artisanal products. Men will find
made-to-measure shirts and suits at Faubourg Saint Sulpice, underwear at Dagobear and
even hand-made shoes by a couple of designers for the French brand Pete Sorensen. For
fashionable or hand-made eye wear, the first Jimmy Fairly boutique can be found in the
Marais. There are also plenty of talented designers on the leather goods scene: My Suelly
with its 50s-style shoes and bags (sold at Bon Marché), the designer Delphine Delafon,
known for the quality of her hand-made bags, and also Isaac Reina (ex-Hermès and Maison
Martin Margiela), who sells his creations in a shop in the Marais. To discover several talented
designers at the same time, a visit to La Cour Paris is a most. This space, situated in the
same street as the trendy second-hand clothes shop Killiwatch, in the Mouffetard district,
presents deco objects, furniture, accessories and clothing by young independent artists and
designers waiting to be spotted by fashion professionals, the media, or the general public.

> Concept stores, multi-brand stores and shopping centres
Fifteen years ago, Colette was Paris’s only concept store. Since then it has given rise to
many others with varied and often innovative products. On boulevard Beaumarchais, Merci
offers clothing, furniture and decorative objects as well as two places to eat and relax.
Some 100 metres away, on boulevard des Filles-du-Calvaire, Bonton is a concept store for
children. L’Éclaireur, in the 8th arrondissement, presents a range of trends in fashion
objects, accessories, toys, books and interior decor. At the shopping centre near to the
Canal Saint Martin, you’ll find Veja shoes, clothes, second-hand furniture and works of art,
as well as second-hand bicycles. Nearby, the two owners of Babel offer a large selection of
objects and clothing items, and regularly transform their boutique with pop-up stores and
events.

Following the new So Ouest shopping centre in the Paris suburbs and the new shopping
centre at Gare Saint-Lazare, Beaugrenelle (the newest shopping centre in Paris) opened in
the 15th arrondissement after a 10-year construction period. The Beaugrenelle shopping
centre is a short walk from the Eiffel Tower and first opened in the 70s. It has been
completely redesigned and rebuilt. The result is impressive: 50,000 m² of shops, 7,000 m² of

> Vintage trends
Vintage is still hip in Paris. Second-hand clothes shops offering second-hand clothes,
jewellery and accessories are full of treasures. The Secours Catholique recycles the clothes
deposited at its headquarters in its Boutique Solidaire in the Marais. As for the Emmaüs
association, it has seven second-hand clothes shops in Paris, the largest of which is on rue
de Charonne. At Étienne-Marcel, Kiliwatch is one of the most well-known second-hand
clothes shops in Paris. Episode, its neighbour, has a wide choice ranging from leather bags
to accessories, jackets and dresses from the 1960s and 1970s. Also in the Marais, Free 'P'
Star, Noir Kennedy, and Hippy Market. For luxury items, MB Select offers bags, shoes and
clothes from top brands. Over in the 16th arrondissement, Réciproque is the second-hand
clothes shop for top fashion brands. For home décor, Habitat, the British furniture brand,
has a vintage space featuring its old classics, at the Puces de Saint-Ouen flea market.

> Ethical is chic
Shopping can be reconciled with sustainable development and several specialist shops offer
fair-trade or organic products. The big brand Alter Mundi is a reference and sells interior
decor objects, furniture, fashion items and accessories. Situated in the 6th arrondissement,
Jaya Concept is a concept store selling objects mainly from Cambodia. In the Passage des
Panoramas, the boutique Maalkita focuses on eco-ethical interior decor goods. CSAO, for
‘Compagnie du Sénégal et de l'Afrique de l'Ouest’, sells a variety of products from Africa. At
Montmartre, Tienda Esquipulas transports visitors to South America with its masks, ex-voto
and waxed fabrics in bright colours.

> Stock clearance and brand outlets
To take advantage of top brands at low prices, go to stock clearance shops, which offer
surplus and unsold goods at affordable prices. Many brands such as Sonia Rykiel or Maje
have opened their end-of-series shops. There are also multi-brand boutiques like
L'Habilleur. On the edge of Paris, several specialist shopping centres like Quai des
Marques, La Vallée Village and One Nation Paris comprise dozens of shops offering
significant discounts. The latter is now home to Galeries Lafayette Outlet, a new boutique
where the Parisian department store discounts some of its collections.

3 – DESIGN AND DECOR
Parisian boutiques and design and decor workshops offer the best in contemporary creation.
> The new addresses for design
Paris is a landmark destination for lovers of contemporary design. French designers (the
brothers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, Tsé Tsé & associates, Patrick Jouin, Christophe Pillet
etc.) attract clients from home and abroad. The Marais, a hot spot for design, is home to
numerous design showrooms like Byzance Home, devoted to home decor, with its exclusive
lines in Scandinavian design. At Fleux and Pylones, you can treat yourself to practical
design objects at reasonable prices. The latest trends can also be found in concept stores
like Les Eclairagistes for lights, or The House Factory, which mixes furniture and other
objects. In 2014, Ligne Roset, the famous French furniture design brand (Pierre Paulin, the
Bouroullec brothers) opened a new 700 m² showroom on four levels, on rue Réaumur. After
their boutique at Palais-Royal, Tsé Tsé & associées have also opened one in the Marais. And
Muji, the Japanese ‘no-brand, no-logo’ company, has unveiled its 700 m² flagship store at
the Forum des Halles, where it showcases its decorative objects, tableware, furniture and
storage accessories in a clean, modern style.

> Shopping for art
Shopping for art is a confirmed trend in Paris. Arteum, a concept store for art, offers
paintings, photos and sculptures by contemporary artists and reproductions of famous works
in three shops in Paris — at the Carrousel du Louvre, at Bercy Village and at La Défense.
You’ll find fine books on art, chairs inspired by Mondrian, the Nanas by Niki de Saint Phalle

> Souvenirs, souvenirs
Eiffel Tower, snow globe, postcard of the Louvre ... Impossible to leave the French capital
without buying a traditional souvenir. Souvenir shops, kiosks or themed shops are often
located close to the city’s major cultural sites. The Galeries Lafayette department store has
an entire 400 m² space devoted to gift souvenirs on the 6th floor of the shop. All these
places are full of all types of objects illustrating Paris, its monuments and historic places.
For its part, Paris City Council opened the souvenir shop Paris Rendez-Vous within Paris City
Hall in 2014, with a large number of products, including several items bearing the Vélib’
‘brand’. Again in 2014, the newly-renovated Musée de Montmartre unveiled a bookshop cum
gift shop selling books, stationary, accessories and other nice gifts, recalling the artistic
past of the neighbourhood.

A few steps away from Place de la Bastille, the Viaduc des Arts with its 55 master craftsmen
is a unique place that mixes the latest trends and a place where prestigious designers create
elegant, refined and luxury works. Unique jewellery, theatre sets, robots and antique dolls,
restoration of tapestries, contemporary furniture, art objects, painting on porcelain, lights,
bronze … The artisans work in workshops/shops under the arcades, the top of which is a
walkway known as the Promenade Plantée, giving you the chance to take a high-level walk

> Outstanding perfumes
Parisian elegance has always gone hand in hand with the most exquisite perfume. With
black perfume bottles and enchanting essential oils, Lilian Hennessy has conquered his
public with his brand By Kilian and its fragrances Oeuvres Noires and Arabian Nights. Among
the new French perfumes, Francis Kurkdjian presents an amazing world of refined scents.
All the historic perfumers have a boutique in the Marais: Guerlain, Serge Lutens and Annick
Goutal. At Corner du Labo, at Colette, genuine perfume laboratory assistants invite
shoppers to take part in the creation of their own personal bespoke fragrance. And more
delightful places to discover include: L’Artisan Parfumeur, Nicolaï, les Editions de
Parfums Frédéric Malle, Diptyque (the famous Parisian candle and perfume house), and
Nose, a concept store with more than 250 essences and 50 brands of rare perfumes.

> Natural beauty care
Essential oils, soap, shampoo, organic sunscreen products, plant-based products, and more.
Natural products for the hair and body win common approval and there are plenty of great
shops. Aesop, the Australian brand of plant-based body care products, already has four sales
points in Paris. Mademoiselle Bio has eight boutiques which offer a varied range of products
for men, women and babies, including make-up, perfume and aromatherapy. L’Occitane en
Provence, with its wide range of natural beauty products from the south of France, now has
more than 20 boutiques in Paris. Terre d’Oc, the 100% organic and fair-trade brand, has a
first Parisian boutique in Montmartre. The Greek brand Korres can be found on rue des
Ecoles, in the 5th arrondissement. To learn how to take care of yourself naturally, the
boutique Souris Verte offers workshops for making bespoke organic cosmetics. Huygens, a
new Parisian beauty-care brand, offers natural bespoke cosmetics in its new boutique in the
Marais. As does Arome Zone, which opened a veritable DIY beauty space near Odéon in
2014, including a nature spa.

5 – LUXURY
> Paris, capital of fashion
Although Paris is the capital of fashion and design, it is also and above all the capital of
luxury. The major haute couture and jewellery brands are all well established in the capital.
Upscale hotels and beauty treatment salons abound and the top chefs all have a restaurant
here. The Bon Marché department store, and certain streets and districts in Paris, such as
Place Vendôme and rue du Faubourg-Saint-Honoré, have made luxury their specialism. The
Printemps department store has an entire floor devoted to luxury, as does Galeries
Lafayette, which devotes part of its first floor to top luxury brands.

> Haute Jewellery in Place Vendôme
Rue de la Paix and Place Vendôme are home to high-end jewellers whose magnificent
boutiques are veritable jewel cases for their creations. Chanel has opened its high-end
jewellery workshop above its boutique. Every year, the brand presents two collections to
coincide with the haute couture calendar, with exclusively precious stones and unique
pieces of jewellery. Other outstanding jewellery houses — Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Dior
Joaillerie, Boucheron, Chaumet — also have their own boutiques. The latest arrival on the
famous square is Lorenz Baumer. After working for Chanel and Louis Vuitton for 20 years,
this independent designer has opened his own shop in a former private mansion on the wellknown square. And the watch maker Breguet has its largest international showcase here:
500 m² on two levels, a boutique on the ground floor and an exhibition area on the first
floor.

> The finest trunks and cases
Paris is synonymous with leather goods. For 150 years, the greatest leather goods makers
have been making trunks, cases and other hand luggage in Paris. La Malle Bernard, in rue
Hautefeuille in the 6th arrondissement, has been creating luxury hand luggage since 1846.
From the penderie (wardrobe) trunk to the diplomatic suitcase, and the highly-practical
cabin trunk, the boutique offers everything for serene and stylish travel. Since 1853,
Goyard, on rue Royale, has been offering a range of elegant trunks with an original touch
that’s bound to delight even the most demanding of globe-trotters. Other renowned
establishments have designed items for anyone who feels that beauty makes the perfect
travelling companion: La Maroquinerie Parisienne, on rue Tronchet, Lancel, Louis Vuitton
and Longchamp on the Champs-Élysées, etc.

> Dream time-pieces
For collectors and fans of exceptional time pieces, Paris has numerous prestigious
addresses. Top watch-making brands like Cartier, Montblanc, Jaeger-Le Coultre and Rolex
have addresses in rue de la Paix, rue Royale and Place Vendôme. High-street brands like
Swatch and Louis Pion also have shops throughout Paris. And Bucherer has become a
landmark for luxury watches in Paris, with top brands all under the same roof. Cartier has a
big boutique (450m²) next to Bucherer (with connecting doors) on boulevard des Capucines.
As for the Swiss brand Tag Heuer, it didn’t stop at the opening of its sales point at Buchere;
it also has a new boutique on the Champs-Elysées. Just like another Swiss watchmaker,
Corum, which set up nearby on the famous avenue at the beginning of 2014.

6 - GASTRONOMIC SHOPPING IN PARIS
> Fine food stores and upscale local food shops
In Paris, gastronomy is always under the
spotlight thanks to artisans, chefs and
renowned food producers. International cake
and pastry specialists include Pierre Hermé,
Ladurée, and Philippe Conticini. As for the
delicatessen G. Detou, its pistachios, ground
almonds, pine nuts, chocolate bars etc. are
ordered directly from the producers. The food
halls of major department stores, like the
Grande Epicerie du Bon Marché and
Lafayette Gourmet, offer a wide and
international choice, with the accent on
quality. In the 9th arrondissement, Causses is
both a food store and a deli with soups, salads and sandwiches. Recently, three famous
chefs turned to sweet foods: Alain Ducasse opened his Manufacture du Chocolat in the east
of Paris, Cyril Lignac opened his second Parisian patisserie in the 16th arrondissement, and
Jean-François Piège opened his Gâteaux Thoumieux, in rue Saint-Dominique.
Over the last two years, two French provincial institutions for sweet treats have opened
several shops in Paris. Namely La Mère Poulard, known for its biscuits and shortbread,
made at Mont Saint-Michel. And Méert, the famous pâtissier from Lille, who made his name
with his waffles and now has two shops in Paris.
The Belgian chocolatier Pierre Marcolini, for his part, opened his fourth shop in Paris in
2014, on the prestigious street rue Saint-Honoré, not far from another master chocolatier:
Jean-Paul Hévin.

> Flea markets and second-hand shops
From Saturday to Monday, Paris’s flea markets are a hive of activity at the gateways to
Paris. Both popular and very specialized, the flea markets are veritable treasure troves for
fans of designer furniture, antiques and curios of all kinds. You can go bargain hunting for
anything in Paris! Strolling along the banks of the Seine, you’ll see the famous bouquinistes
who offer numerous old and second-hand books, as well as engravings, postcards and other
collector’s items. Bargain hunting in Paris also means combing the many second-hand sales
which take place during the year. Good bargains are also to be found in the Dépôts-ventes
(second-hand shops where goods are sold on commission) and in the second-hand clothes
corners of major department stores.

> Shopping at the museum
Museum shops are full of artistic, contemporary and classic objects and combine shopping
with culture. Numerous Parisian art venues have shops selling reproductions or prints of
works exhibited. For the latest fashionable object, go to the Centre Pompidou, or the
contemporary shop Black Block at the Palais de Tokyo. For more rare objects, take a stroll
under the Louvre pyramid. Next to the Seine, the Musée du Quai-Branly’s shop offers
objects inspired by the Arts Premiers. At the 107 Rivoli, the shop at the Musée des Arts
Décoratifs, and at that of the Pinacothèque, the articles on sale are contemporary.

> Under cover in the Parisian passages
Covered passages lined with shops started to appear in Paris
in the 18th century. The majority were to open a century later
and are part of the 19th-century heritage so prominent in
Paris. They are mostly to be found on the Right Bank of the
Seine, mainly near to the Grands Boulevards, in areas that
attracted the wealthy classes at the time of their
construction.
They usually take the form of a gallery which has been
created by piercing through other buildings or that was built
at the same time as them. The galleries are covered with a
glass roof which lets in daylight from above giving a special
effect. These galleries evolved over the years; they were
ideal for escaping the crowds, meeting someone or shopping
out of the rain and bad weather. Abandoned, then revamped
in the 20th century, twenty or so of them still exist today
and are highly-prized by Parisians and visitors. In them, you’ll
find numerous shops as well as restaurants, art galleries and
tea rooms, and each of them have their own character.
