Both the Tulipan and later the Pluto horses came from this stud. Sire of the Tulipan was defined as a “Spanish Breed” and Tulipan came from a Spanish herd of this stud. (A. Hop). The Hungarian family Jankovićs owned Ureglak in the county of Somogy. County Somogy Hungary They also had the Teresovacz stud farm in Croatia/Slovenia. The family bred and crossbred Lipizzaner horses of Spanish origin with horses purchased directly from Lipizza. Hence are the origins of the Tulipan. Despite this, no Tulipan stallion was found in the Hungarian Lipizza stud farms. Only in the summer 1869, a black stallion, born from a “Caprice” was brought to the stables of Szilvasvarad, that was later known as the home of the Tulipan horse. (Source: Ardverdi d Emilei web site Lipizzaners). The most important of the private stud farms from 1680 was Teresovacz. Here the Tulipan line was used and this was a line of Spanish descent. Around 1800 he appears and it is noted that both his sire and his dam were Spanish. County Bjelovar & Bilogora Croatia The Pluto line died out at Lipizza but was brought back from Teresovacz, just as the Maestoso had died out in Lipizza and was brought back from Mezohegyes. Therefore it is worth noting that all Plutos appearing in any way on any pedigree also contains Tulipan. Around 1890, the family stud farm at Teresovacz (now in Croatia), a part of the Janković-Bésán estate, was split up because of an inheritance issue. As a result, a second stud was founded in Cabuna, not far from Teresovacz. After the resolution of yet another dispute over property of the Janković-Bésáns in the late 1920s, the horse breeding operation then moved to Ureglak in Hungary. In 1944, the owner of the stud, Count Janković-Bésán, was forced to flee Hungary due to the advance of the Red Army. He left with eight Lipizzans: six mares and two stallions. The Pluto line died out in Lipica around the 1870’s as the stud farm chose not to continue this line. The remaining Pluto horses of the Janković family at Teresovacz were much better and continued the line from this stud to the present day. Pluto Head Study 1900 Teresovacz ceased breeding in around 1922. The horses in South Africa today are direct descendants of this stud farm. In 1872 the horses of the Teresovacz moved to Fogaras, from there the Royal Hungarian Stud moved to Babolna in 1912, apparently due to an “eye infection” in the herd. The Balkan wars were in existence at this time and there were fears of a second Balkan war, so it is possibly more likely that due to the unstable political situation the horses were moved. Not all the horses were moved, but most were to Babolna. A small herd considered as working horses remained. They were all purebred Lipizzaners. The stud books also went to Babolna, so the pedigrees could not be continued at Fogaras. It was definite the horses were purebred, as many of the horses were branded with the pure brands with the F for Favory. Tulipan VI Szilvasvarad ( H. Nünberg ) There is a story in Hungary that the Favory line is also connected to this line, but this cannot be proved at the moment. Fogaras combined horses from the Teresovacz stud. Other noted breeders were the Esterhazy and Biedermann (Mozsgó Stud) families. However the most important private stud farm in Hungary in earlier times was that of the Janković family named Teresovacz. Hungary and Romania did not exchange horses, however it is guaranteed that all the horses are purebred Lipizzaners. (Source: Louise Krutzler’s notes from Atjan Hop International Lipizzaner Judges schools 2007 and 2008). The castle of Daruvar was built in the 18th century at an elevated point in the center of luxurious gardens probably dating back to the same period. The castle was widely known for its beauty, and it is in fact after this castle that the town of Daruvar was named. The castle later changed many owners and, in recent times, it used to be a high school building. In 1763, after many years of Turkish rule in this area, Antun Janković became the owner of Daruvar. He bought the property for 40,000 forints. The main north wall which is 4 meters high, 2 meters wide and 14 meters long, is partly conserved. (Croatian National Tourist Board website) Pluto Fantasca 1890 Fogaras In 1765 Maria Theresa, bestowed upon Count Janković the title “de Daruvar“. In Hungarian "daru" means "crane" which was the symbol on the coat of arms of that family, and "var" means town or castle. In translation, Daruvar means Crane's town or Crane's castle. Today the crane is the symbol of Daruvar and its pose represents constant alert on watch. Count Antun Janković in 1771 renamed Podborje as Daruvar and from 1771 to 1777, Antun Janković built a baroque castle, with a park that had already been surrounded by several houses, and the settlement was named after the castle. In 1771 German explorer, traveller and writer, Taube listed the Castle Janković among one of the most beautiful buildings in the kingdom. Epona Studs Lipizzaner stallion, 3518 Conversano Juliana III (Imp USA/dec) NEW ZEALAND NEWS Some Lipizzaner news from the South Island: Lorna Price and her son James took part in a memorial ride to commemorate the more than 10,000 horses sent from NZ in WW1 that never returned. Well over 100 horses, donkeys, & mules and their riders took part. There where every size and age of horse and riders represented. The ride included 5 covered wagons pulled by teams of Clydesdales carrying some of the very elderly dignitaries, but only one Lipizzaner , our girl Stella (Conversano Juliana III x Inzia) pictured below, has never been out in the company of strangers or been to any kind of show, took the whole thing in her stride.
