Generous Knight Will
Be Remembered
Capt. Cieslarczyk Dies
Former South Amboy Police Captain,
Edward Cieslarczyk, 55, died on May 4
after a long illness. The popular police
officer retired after 27 years in the Traffic
Safety Division. He is survived by his wife,
Rose Holovacko Cieslarczyk, a son, Edward, daughter Cheryl, a granddaughter,
sister Dorothy, and his mother Sophia. Ed
left a tremendous mark on the community,
and will be sadly missed. God Bless!
Sayreville Hopes To
Eliminate Duplicate
Street Names

Duplicate street names may soon be
gone in Sayreville. Police say similar and
identical street names are confusing and
even dangerous. Authorities often receive
wrong messages from 911, so the police
department hopes to renumber house addresses that are out of order and change
more than 80 street names.
Street names include Charles, John,
Thomas, William, and Cheesequake. The
installation of the Sayreville Police's new
computerized dispatch system is delayed
since the computer doesn't recognize addresses that aren't in sequential order.
The department proposes three Oak
Streets be designated Upper, Lower, and
Middle Oak, one of the Charles Streets
would become Tidewater Way. one of the
Cheesequake Roads would be Village Road,
twoof the Chevalier Avenues would change
to Stelmaszek Street and Wisniewsk Avenue.
Many streets would follow marina
themes such as Wharf Way, Port Way, and
Marina Way. Other names would honor
military vets. Police say everyone needs a
unique identity, one name, and one number
on every street. Currently there are two
addresses with 6 Washington Avenue plus
there are eight duplicate house numbers on
South Pine Avenue.
If the change occurs, everyone affected
would be notified and the changes would
take effect Sept. I. Approximately 800
residents could be affected.
Arts & Crafts
Registration
Mary Lou DeBlis, South Amboy Superintendent of Recreation, announced that
registration for the Summer Arts & Crafts
Program will begin on June 1st and run
through June 22nd. Registration is open to
• all city residents, boys & girls ages 4 1/212. The Rec Office is open weekdays from
8:3Oa.m.-3:3O p.m. and is located in the Dr.
Charles W. Hoffman Senior Resource Center, 108 So. Stevens Ave. The Summer
Arts & Crafts Program will begin on Wed.,
June 27th and all participants MUST register in advance. For additional information
please call the Rec Office 727-7677.

7th Annual Memorial

South Amboy PBA #63 held their 7th
Annual Police Memorial in front of City
Hall on May 14. Cathy Housman, wife of
the late Bill Housman, who passed away
May 2,2000,accompaniedbytheir4 daughters, placed the wreath in his memory. Rill
was a member oi SA Police Dept. lor 23
years, and retired in 1996 as Sergeant. He
will always be remembered for his many
"acts of heroism" as a member of the force.
Bill's children and grandchildren read
prayers remembering their loved one.
This year, the U.S. Marine Corps
League was there with a rifle salute and the
PB A Chaplain. Father Maurice Carlton gave
the Invocation.
Since last years memorial the SA PBA
#63 lost two of their retired members, Capt.
Jack McCabe, who died Oct. 17,2000, and
again this year the flag in front of City Hall
was at half staff forthe recent death of Capt.
Ed Cieslarczyk who passed away on May
4th.
The first police memorial service was
held on May 14, 1995. It was decided at a
meeting of local PBA #63 that it was a time
to recognize those who find served from the
department. A simple service with refreshments was approved. At this time, old
friendships were rekindled, with promises
of not waiting so long to see each other
again. Also, at the first memorial, a plaque
in the shape of a police badge was dedicated
which has the name and number of the
deceased members of the force.
SA PBA #63 memorial flags were
givene to families of the deceased members
to put on their graves.
An outstanding job was done by George
Kern and Jamie Norek to keep up this
wonderful tradition.
Old Hospital Purchased By Local Developers
The Memorial Medical Center has been
purchased by Hillcrest Development &
Management Corp. for $2.6 million, and
they plan to invest an additional $6 million
for renovations to bring health-care services back to the local area. The company,
based in Cliffwood Beach, is owned by
South Amboy natives, Andrew Piscatelli
president, and his son Drew, who were both
born in Memorial.
Plans have been made to lease space
for an "urgent care center," and a smaller
emergency room for cases that will need
less than 24 hours of care.
South Amboy Board of
Education Selects New
Superintendent
The South Amboy Board of Education
appointed Dr. Patrick Martin to replace
Superintendent of Schools, Robert
Bloodgood, who will retire in June.
Dr. Martin, a unanimous choice for the
position, is currently the Director of Secondary Education in Wayne. 32 candidates
were in contention for the top slot in the
South Amboy Schools District.
Martin signed a 3-year contract, with
his initial year's salary set at $123,000.
Bloodgood earned $112,000 in his final
year at the helm.
Several hospitals and health-care agencies have expressed interest in operating
the center. The owners have been negotiating the lease of space to private medical
practices, and a wide variety of possibilities
include; physical therapy, occupational
therapy, same-day surgery, child care, an
adult daycare center, internal medicines, etc.
The entire project could be in operation within a year or less, and should provide many jobs for our local unemployed.

Raise $7,845

Mike Garrone Sr., 82, of Melrose died
on May 5th. An officer with the South
Amboy Knightsof Columbus Council #426,
he was one of the most generous and popular members. The following are comments
made about him by his beloved brother
Knights about what they'll remember most
about Mike:
John Simeone, South Amboy "He is
the definition of the Knights of Columbus.
I met him 5 years ago, and wish I had met
him sooner. By far one of the nicest friends
I've had. He helped me pull throughalotof
bad times. I'm going to miss him from the
bottom of my heart."
AI DiGuilio, Parlin "Mike was the
most generous and giving man that I ever
met. When it came to volunteer work and
generosity, he was always the first one to
give out of his pocket, out of his heart. He
is a true definition of a Knights of Columhus individual."
PGK Leo DiGuilio, Sayreville "1 think
he had one of the biggest hearts for charity.
He was the first guy to hand out his money
for the fund. He was a great member of the
Knights of Columbus. We're going to miss
him very much."

Amboy " I will always remember his generosity to any charity or charitable affair we
ever had. Mike was always the first guy to
donate anything. He was generally a good
guy, and always willing to help out."
PGK Ray Wesley, South Amboy "His
generosity. Anytime, anyplace, anywhere,
where the children were involved, Mike
would be the first one to reach into his
pocket and always give the money. He
would donate to the children's fund, the
kids Christmas Party, and anything to do
with the kids. He was just a great guy."

"Mike was a good guy all-around. A good
family man. His wife is a lovely lady. They
never could do enough for you. They're
always there when you need them."
Steve Schmid, South Amboy "Mike
Garrone might be the most generous Knight
that we had down here. He was always the
first to contribute to all the wonderful things
that wedo. The Children's Christmas Party,
The Retarded Citizens Drive, every single
Knight of Columbus function that we had.
I also enjoyed talking about boxing with
him. We're all going to miss him. He was
a great guy."
*I've always considered Mike a good
friend. He was quiet by nature, but in my
eyes a true leader. He led by example, and
generosity was what we all learned from
this true gentleman...I always admired

Fundraiser for the American Heart Association. The money goes towards medical
research and programs that help prevent
heart disease and strokes. Congratulations!

Dr. Hesseltine Will Be
Remembered
Dr. Clair E. "Hess" Hesseltine, 91, a
longtime South Amboy M.D. died on May
14th. Many locals can recall going to his
office on Main St. for all of our "shots," and
looking up to him for always helping us to
get better when we when we were ill. A
very dedicated physician, he touched and
saved many lives in the area. He will truly
be missed!
It's A Boy!
DeAnne & Craig Smith of Hamilton,
N.J., are the proud parents of a baby boy,
Ryan Matthew born on Feb. 8th. (DeAnnc
is a '87 St. Mary's grad). Ryan weighed 8
lbs. 6 oz. and was 21 inches long. The
proud maternal grandparents are Al & Eileen
D'Agostino of South Amboy, and the paternal grandparents are Mr. & Mrs. Kevin
Smith of Mount Laurel. Al & Dawn
D'Agostino of Matawan are Ryan's uncle
and aunt. Congratulations!
Albert Will Be Missed
Bob Albert, 68 of Sayreville died on
April 29. He was a talented musician who
played keyboards and banjo, while performing locally with "The Footsteps" band
for 15 years. He will be missed.

Get well wishes are extended to former
Mechanicsville resident, Anna Rusczyk,
whois home after a brief hospital stay. You

Mary Agnes Morris
Morris Retires After
27 Years

Mary Agnes Morris, the popularbranch
manager of Amboy National Bank in South
Amboy recently retired after serving the
community for 27 years. She entered the
banking field in 1974 as a part-time teller at
the Laurence Harbor branch, went fulltime, was promoted to branch manager and
recently an officer.
Mary Agnes said that, "I enjoyed working for the bank. It helped put my children
through college." When asked what she'll
miss most about her banking career, she
replied, "I'll miss the clients and the people
I work with most. Also the daily routine of
coming into work." What are her future
plans? "I will spend most of the time with
my family and grandchildren, and also be
able to vacation with my husband Joe. I just
want to enjoy life!" A beautiful retirement
dinner was held for her by the bank at
Button wood Manor, and 88 people attended.
Here's wishing you and your family happiness always! Congratulations! You did a
fantastic job!

Nick DeBiase, Joan DeBiase, Debbie
Solovey, and Patty DeBiase, the establishment has been in existence for 72
years. The family business is now on its
"third generation," and was initially operated by grandparents Frank & Rose,
and then by parents Nick & Shirley.
Connie's is a good place to unwind and enjoy the best in "live 50's
through the '90' s dance music on weekends, and karaoke during the week.
Along with the finest in live entertainment, Connie's offers many "group

Nick DeBiase grew up in and
around the business, and started full
time in 1977. He says, "I owe everything that the business has to offer to
my parents, Nick & Shirley who ran
the business from the time I was a kid."
Nick Sr. passed away in 1978, and
Shirley recently died in October, 2000.

St. Mary's Field Day 2001 took place
recently at Raritan Waterfront Park in South
Amboy.
As you know, it was a glorious day for
the students to be outside and playing games!
We started with an opening prayer and
pledge of allegiance, and then each grade
proceededtotheiractivities. which included
volleyball, soccer, sack and relay races.
There was a DJ on hand for dancing and
musical games too. There was lots of
popped corn and cotton candy, hot dogs and
watermelon. The closing event was the
grade against grade "Tug O" War" which
landed most of the participants on the
ground!
Parent volunteers were on hand to
help with games and to serve lunch, which
was generously donated by Old Country
Buffet. We couldn't think of a better
way to spend the day than by celebrating
our school community together with
families, teachers and students.

Yearbook-Hoffman 1951
Generous Knight Will Be Remembered

A little over three months had passed
since the South Amboy Explosion, and the
Hoffman High School Class of 1951 began
its senior year in September 1950. Popular
songs of the day, like "Mona Lisa,"
"'Goodnight Irene," and "Play A Simple
Melody," helped the young adults relax and
enjoy life, especially after the nationally
publicized disaster they had been through...
The Superintendent of Schools was
James Tustin...President of the Board of
Education was Vincent Higgins...Other
Board members were Charles Brinamen,
Edward Lake, Thomas Gleason Jr., and
John Ploskonka...
The main focus of the social scene was
the sports program which featured outstanding boys basketball and baseball teams
under coach Eugene "Jimmy" Dobrzynski.
Students looked forward to coming out and
cheering the Guvs on to victory. Although
there were only 28 graduates, the basketball squad finished at a fine 14-8, and the
baseball team went 10-4...John Kovaleski
and John "Skeets" Skarzynski were truly
outstanding in both sports, gaining AllState in baseball, and later going on to play
professional baseball...Charles Koerner
was a tremendous basketball player and
All-Stater, as was Marvin Wood...Other
talented senior athletes were George Busch
and Joseph Krygier...Fve personally gotten to know John, "Skeets," and Charlie
over the years, and find them to be wonderful gentlemen. They arc truly straightshooters, honest, funny and I'm glad I can
call them friends...

1 don't think I ever admitted it to him, but
he was right.

Did you know that there were no senior plays produced at the John St. institution from 1972-1992? The reason might
have been social change or the Guvs HS
sports dynasties that ran through those decades. Whatever the reason, in 1993, two
dedicated teachers, Lynn Davis and Larry
D'Ambrosa resurrected the HS plays. In
the spring of '93 "Beauty & The Beast" was
produced. In 1994 "Little Shop of Horrors"
and also "Aladdin," 1995-"Gypsy," and
also "Snow White." 1996-"You're A Good
Man Charlie Brown."...The upcoming

The flounder and mackerel fishing
which got started has ended and fluke and
bluefish have replaced them. At SA and
Cliffwood beaches, its bluefish, plenty averaging 4 pounds, and going to 8 or better
on bait. Some keeper stripers are mixed in
and chunking for them in the bay proper is
good enough for party boats to get in on the
action. Fluke season opened on the 13th
and fishing was good. I heard of a few 5
pound plus fish, but half of the catches were
throwbacks under the new 6 inch rule. The
Bay and Pound Nets are loaded with weakfish ready to spawn-they are just starting to
hit baits.
Fresh Water
Trout stocking is now in full swing. I
limited out at the Pequest in the last week of
April, with a nice 14-inch brown, the largest fish. They hit all trout baits. I even
caught 3 on a small plug. Action is good all
over the state. The 1 st of the month [ tried
some small lakes in Sussex County, catching some pickerel including some decent
ones plus small perch. Shad are now upstream in the Delaware with the best action
upriver of Phillipsburg.

Wed., June 27th through Sat., June 30th, at
Main St. and MacArthur Ave. in Sayreville.
The hours are 6-11 p.m. on Wed., Thurs.,
and Sat., and from 6 p.m.-12 a.m. on Friday.
There will be at least 14 rides for kiddies
through adults. Also featured will be games
of chance with prizes for all ages, including
Las Vegas "Money" Wheel for adults,

Recreation Dept. announced that registration for the Fall Basketball League will
begin on June 1 lth. You can register on

Charles W. Hoffman Senior Resource Center, 108 So. Stevens Ave. from 8:30 a.m. till
3:30 p.m. Final registration will be held on
Friday, June 22nd from 7-9 p.m. at the
Senior Center. Registration is open to all
boys and girls ages 5-11, age reached by
Sept. 1st. Registration fee of $20 per child

Sayreville Brothers Train Champion Pigeons
Lions To Hold Awards Night

Joey and Jimmy Pucciarello of
Sayreville recently stunned the pigeon competition at the George Crum Memorial Race
by winning the first four and five of the six
top positions. 379 birds were released from
Somerset, Pa. Jimmy was the trainer for
Joey's loft, and it was an outstanding performance by the local pigeons against stiff
competition from all over. The brothers
have been pigeon fanciers for over 40 years,
following their father Joe, who had flown
pigeons for more than 50 years. The
Pucciarello Brothers mentioned these other
fine, local pigeon trainers including; Leo

on Wed., June 13.
The club will honor students from local schools. This is the 37th consecutive
year that the Lions have honored students.
Teachers of the Year will also be honored.
A $500 scholarship will be awarded
that night, and a South Amboy resident
graduating from high school will be chosen
in a lottery drawing. The scholarship is in
memory of Franklin D. English, a well
respected member of our community,
Gavron, Joe Baker, Bill Baker, Max Leonard,
John Palumbo, and Joe Zack.

Summer Lifeguard Positions
Assembly Deputy Minority Conference Leader John S.
Wisniewski announced today that the New Jersey Department of
Environmental Protection's (DEP) Division of Parks and Forestry
is recruiting staff for 175 lifeguard positions at all State Park
Beaches. DEP is offering free lifeguard training and certification
to staff who fill these positions.
The starting salary for lifeguards is $7.00 per hour. Applicants must be at least 16 years of age and must pass the required tests.
Assemblyman Wisniewski has, in his District Office, the list of test
dates and State Park Beaches offering lifeguard employment.
For those interested in the positions, information packets can
be obtained from the Department of Environmental Protection by

in the late-50's-I used to walk over to their
loading area with a NICKEL and get an
orange soda-Mrs. Knast taught my mom to
make stuffed cabbage (what did an Italian
mom know about that?)
Down on David St.-I remember Edwin
Witkowski, the Conroy's, Jerry Arose and
the snowball fights we'd have in the winters.
Next to my house was the "trestle,"
where 1 was told stories of a kid who was
killed while jumping from the top of one
train car to another while it was
moving...and falling between the cars.
Then there was the last house on Main St.
before you got to Rt. 9-the Griffin's-Linda
Griffin, my best friend forever, her sister
Peggy, and brothers George and Kenny.
Their dog Rusty, who walked with us'to
Tek's to get ice cream.
Those were the days when your parents weren't afraid to let you walk through
the neighborhood after dark. When everyone walked to school, no matter what the
weather. When we sat on the "Wall" in
front of the old school and police station.
When we knew everyone in town. When
the high school basketball games attracted
so many students you had to get there early,
sometimes just to find standing room in the
gym doorway.

New Raritan Bay Basketball League A Huge Success
South Amboy's Mayor John T.
O'Leary, knew something had to be done
for the City's public school youngsters.
After traveling around New Jersey and
seeing youngsters from grades 3-8 playing in different leagues, he realized that
they needed to be competitive in girls and
boys basketball in the future. "They had
an advantage over South Amboy students
who didn't have this opportunity in town,"
he said.
He met with Mary Lou DeBlis, Superintendent of Recreation, and chose
Nick Charmello, a St. Mary's sports legend, as League Director for the first-ever
2001 Raritan Bay Basketball League. It
was a tough project to organize the league
and get it off the ground, just as anything
new is, but with the hard work and total
dedication of Mayor O'Leary, Deblis,

promote family activities, and bringing family together is an important part of the
quality of life here. It's more than recreation, a little more than just basketball.
This league does the full spectrum of getting families involved and includes parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles."

in all. "It was a greater success than I could
have imagined! I'd like to give credit to
Jack O'Leary because it was his idea to get
the league started. We had no leagues for
our 3rd-6th graders to play in, only 7th and
8th, and when they got to high school, they
were 4 years behind the parochial schools.
The parochial kids are more advanced because of the different leagues they compete
in. The public school kids needed court
time, and now they've done very well. I'd
also like to thank Mary Lou DeBlis who
always made sure the kids got whatever
they needed.
Gary Lange did a fine job as the head of
the referees. Also Tom Reilly, Rob O'Brien,
Steve Szatkowski, Craig Biesiada, and Steve
Bushka. The parents through their admissions helped defray the costs."

MCPSA Outstanding Student

St. Mary senior, Alaina Dowd of
Sayreville recently received the prestigious
Middlesex County Principals and Supervisors Association (MCPSA) award. St. Mary
Principal. Dr. Frank Ianniruberto said that
"Alaina really deserves this award. She is
a very fine young lady. She is way above
herself as far as maturity is concerned. She
is charming, delightful, intelligent, and has
it all going for herself. Alaina is a credit to
St. Mary Diocese High School, and she's
going to do good things for herself and
we're going to be very proud of her."
Alaina is deeply involved in her school
community. A member of the National
Honor Society, she works with the Campus
Ministry, The Key Club, Students Against
Substance Abuse, and is also Vice-President of the Latin Club, which earned her a
spot in the Foreign Language Honor Society. She is layout editor of the Literary
Magazine. Alaina is ranked number one in
her class, and has received the Bloustein
Scholarship. She has served as a mentor for
elementary school children in a theater program.
The young scholar plans to attend Georgian Court College where she will major in
Elementary Education, and hopes to become a teacher. What will she remember

The Beach Boys Rock Rah way
New Music
rapping to the crowd throughout the show.
Longtime Beach Boy, Bruce Johnston, who
plays keyboards really got into the show
and had a blast singing, dancing, and he
even took a stack of old 33 1/3 rpm (vinyl
records, remember them), from a lady in
the audience and signed them for her while
the group perfomed. Johnston wrote Barry
Manilow's #! hit "I Write The Songs."
The young blood in the group injected
plenty of life into what turned out to be a
pretty high energy performance. Adrian
Beck, a guitar player from England also had
a very high voice, and on the old Four
Seasons hit "Sherry," he sounded as good
as a young Frankie Valli. The two other
youthful guitar players were flawless on
vocals as well.
The Beach Boys did all of their great
stuff including "I Get Around," "Barbara
Ann," "Help Me Rhonda," "California
Girls," "Good Vibrations," "Sloop John
B," and also a few doo-wop tunes, and a
heavy-duty version of The Beatles' "Back
In The USSR."
Overall, The Beach Boys turned in a
truly outstanding performance at one of the
nicest and cleanest art centers around.

The Beach Boys brought 33 of their
greatest hits and other oldies with them to
the Union County Arts Center in Rahway
on May I4th, and enthralled the sellout
crowd for over I I/2 hours.
The California super-group had the
crowd on its feet for the entire show, clapping to the beat and singing along to their
all-time favorites. Mike Love, the only
original member remaining still has what it
takes, and is singing is as sharp as ever. He
also proved to be a masterful story teller,

Bon Jovi was the musical guest on
Saturday Night Live on May 12...The
band released its first live album, "One
Wild Night" on May 22...Their "Crush"
album was certified double platinum in the
U.S., and sold over 7 million copies
worldwide...Bon Jovi was nominated for
two Grammy Awards, "Best Rock Performance By a Duo or Group" for their big hit
"It's My Life," and "Best Rock Album" for
"Crush.".. .In their 17-year career, they have
sold over 80 million albums...Bon Jovi's
jet flew into Cleveland and parked next to
the U-2 jet at the airport. Both bands stayed
at the same hotel!...At the Rock 'n' Roll
Hall of Fame & Museum the group donated
interesting items including Jon's black
leather coat worn on the inside cover of the
New Jersey album, and his acoustic Gibson
guitar from "Blaze of Glory.".. .Richie donated a stage outfit, a trademark black
Stetson and a custom-made double-neck
acoustic Taylor guitar...At the Cleveland
concert, actor Drew Carey hung out on the
side of the stage and sang along. All of the
U-2 band was also in attendance...

More than just a souvenir or a nostalgia tour, this double CD is a document of a
great combo that still feels that it has something to prove. Blazing versions of "Prove
It All Night" and "Born To Run," along
with stark versions of Bruce's no-way-out
songs like "The River" and "Atlantic City,"
are spine-tingling! The band can take an
audience from spiritual, on a song like
"Land of Hope & Dreams" ("This
train.. .carries... lost souls, This train... faith

this release! You'll be hearing "No More,"
"Crush On You," and lots more all summer
long. The intersting twists and turns in the
song writing and production will make this
one of the best albums of the year.
Joey Ramone (1951 -2001) Former lead
singer of The Ramones recently died. As
founding member of the punk scene in the
mid 70's, they played Club Bene several
times in the '80's. Tom Beninato. coowner, said that the bands rider (list of
requests) was "the simplest I've ever seen.
Two pizzas, that'sit! Simple chords, simple
melodies, simple emotions. The band understood that was all it took to make good
music.

Carry Talent Showcase

The 2001 edition of the South Amboy
Talent Showcase was held on April 27 at
the South Amboy High School auditorium.
The show featured many familiar acts.
Vocalists Mark Dorrick, OctaviaZampella,
Jessyka Lynn and Kiera Elise all turned in
terrific individual performances. Dancer
Tracie Szatkowski and guitarist Marcelo
Santos were also impressive.
Jessica opened the show with
"Memory." Angelica Vargas, Jen Rios and
Kel ly Jarosz closed out the evening's entertainment with "No More."
This is the third consecutive year that
some of South Amboy's premier talent has
had the chance to appear on stage in the
beautiful high school auditorium. The program was presented by the Classes of 2002
and 2004.

South Amboy (6-10) Craig Colfer and
Ken Batiuk are pitching and hitting well for
the Guvs. Batiuk fanned 14 St. Peter's
batters recently. Other big bats include; Jay
Riehl. Brian Idyk, and Bill Seres.
St. Mary (5-13) Chris Zarobinski's
home run blasts, and good hitting by Jeff
Simpson and Doug Boucher have sparked
the Eagles. Chris llao notched his first
pitching "W," and Mark Morris also won
recently.
Softball
South Amboy (9-5) Keryn Rosenberg
just missed the cycle against Piscataway
Tech, and Melissa Rainone is doing a fine
job hurling and at the plate, where she went
4 for 4 against the same Tech club. Melissa
Poulsen and Lauren Brady have also been
stroking the ball.
Sayreville (9-6) The Switzer girls
Lauren and Julia have provided plenty of
offensive pop to the Bombers squad this
season. Lauren, Middlesex County's top
hitter with a scorching .604 mark, won
another game with her timely hitting, as she
singled in the game-winner in the bottom of
the 7th to give Sayreville a 3-2 thriller over
Perth Amboy. She is also tied for the
county lead in triples with 3. Justine Robe
(.449), Laura Lasko, Ginni Brazaitis, Lisa
Oriolo, and Lynn Olender have also
pounded the ball lately. Kristin Karbowski
is the ace of the pitching staff.
St. Mary (8-7) Kara Kurzawa, Katie
Kurzawa, Kathleen Kenny, and Jessica
Fiore have been carrying the offensive load,
while Jill Palomo is the top hurler.

South Amboy (4-6) Coach Tony G's
club is perhaps the best ever in the brief
history of Hoffman/South Amboy tennis.

Sayreville Excels In GMC
Track & Field Championships

Sayreville's Jesse Mesina captured the
Greater Middlesex Conference Track & Field
400 championship at South Brunswick. He
breezed to the finish line in 49.7. His brother,
Robin Mesina finished 2nd in the 800.
The Sayreville 4x400 team of Jesse
Mesina, Ken Smith, Robin Mesina, and
Anthony Reid won the title in 3:24.3. The
team finished 3rd overall behind Piscataway
and Old Bridge. Congratulations!
Popowski Stars For Rutgers

Mike Popowski. who just a few years
ago was the All-Everything star catcher for
the Sayreville Bombers has emerged as a
superstar for Rutgers.
Popowski is the grandson of the legendary Eddie "Buddy" Popowski. who is
currently in his 64th season with the Boston
Red Sox as a coach and instructor.
The young backstop for The Scarlet
Knights is an excellent hitter, and his 6
hqme. runs, 36 rbi's. and .321 avg. have
helped Rutgers to an super fine (37-13).
Mike is also a standout on defense, and has
only 2 errors all season.
It's a little early, but there is a very good
possibility that he will be selected by a major
league team in the June draft. Don't be
surprised to see Mike Popowski playing in
Yankee Stadium in the not too distant
future....in a Boston Red Sox uniform.
Klimchak Stars In Tennis

Does the name Michael Klimchak
sound familiar to you? Mike Klimchak
was a fine South Amboy athlete back in the
'70's, and one of St. Mary's greatest golfers in history.
His son Michael, a freshman at A.L.
Johnson High is one of the top high school
tennis players in Union County. He won his
first 75 games of the season, and what is even
more astonishing is that he won hisfirstsix
matches by perfect 6-0, 6-0 scores. A talented player and fine competitor, he advanced to the semifinals of the Union County
Tennis Tournament before bowing out. Congratulations on a truly amazing year!

Shaver Excels In College Ball

Former Sayreville Bombers baseball star,
Billy Shaver is having a super year on the
college level at Rutgers-Newark. He recently
was batting a lofty .537,4th in NCAA Division III. Shaver was also ranked 12th in the
nation in rbi per game with 1.41. In 24 games
he pounded 44 hits, 9 doubles and one triple.
The center fielder was 2nd on the team with
34 rbi's, and also on-base percentage .591.
He was 4th in runs with 30, and the top base
stealer with 9 in 10 attempts.
Wyzykowski Wins 100th
South Amboy native and current
Sayreville business owner, Greg
Wyzykowski recently won his 100th victory as a high school boys tennis coach. At
present, he coaches Shore Regional, and
was previously the mentor at South River.

Improving Playground Safety
Middle school students are more likely
to be physically active if they are given an
attractive place to play and are supervised.
Physical improvements to school
grounds, such as basketball hoops and tennis courts, along with adult supervision,
were associated with four times as many
boys and five times as many girls being
physically active during free time. James
F. Sollis, Ph.D. of San Diego State University says, "The results raise the possibility
that making realistic improvements to
school environments could increase the
physical activity of students throughout the
school day."
In conjunction with physical improvements, safety concerns should rank high on
the list. It is estimated that more than 500
children are seen in U.S. emergency rooms
each year.
Head injuries are usually the most serious problem. Broken bones, sprains, and
dental injuries are common in about 25%30% of playground accidents on home playground equipment. About 75% of playground injuries are due to falls. The second
most common cause of injury is being hit
by equipment or being cut by sharp hardware screws.
The best way to prevent serious head
injuries and broken bones is to have a soft
surface under the playground equipment.
Even a one-foot fall onto asphalt can cause
serious injury. A four-foot fall onto packed
earth or grass can also cause serious injury
or death. Recommended surfaces include
sand 10" deep or wood chips 12" deep and
rubber outdoor mats. Swings should be
made of soft materials such as rubber plastic or canvas. Screws should be covered
and wood should be free of splinters.

Lake's fourth single of the game drove
in Larue with the game winner. Ray
Wisniewski belted two triples and a
single, and Stan Kowalewski was the winning
pitcher in relief... 1955-Rumson nipped
Hoffman, 10-9 in baseball action. Irv House,
Jim English, and Jack Sten laced 2 hits
apiece... 1968-St. Mary's edged CBA, 4-3, as
Tom Kelly (Minnesota Mgr.) scored the winning run on an error. Soph Mike Drahos hurled
3 innings in relief for the win. Starting pitcher,
Joe Noble laced an rbi single... 1978-Sayreville
girls softball squad blasted Edison, 8-1 behind
winning pitcher, Nancy Burbank, who fired a 7hitter and raised her record to (9-1). Mona
Hickson hammered a 3-run homer, and Candy
Zollinger went 2 for 3....1983-Hoffman halted
Metuchen, 5-0 in the first round of CJ Group I
baseball action. John "Skeets" Skarzynski spun
the 8-hitter shutout, and Bob Gallery knocked in
2 runs...l996-Renee Hode smashed 3 singles
and knocked in 2 to lead Sayreville girls softball
team to a 10-3 thrashing over Raritan...

Newark Bears baseball club president
and owner, Rick Cerone has a lot to smile about
this year. Cerone was a catcher in the majors for
18 years, and starred for the Yankees for 7
seasons. The Bears feature an exciting lineup of
four former major league players of which three
are ex-Yankees. Most notable is the great Jose
Canseco, who has well over 400 major league
home runs, and has an outside shot at the Hall of
Fame. His brother. Ozzie was the league's home
run champion in 2000, as he crushed 48 dingers
for the Bears. Former Yankee, Jim Leyritz, who
will always be remembered for that huge World
Series homer against Atlanta, should blast many
round trippers for the Newark franchise. Journeyman, Lance Johnson is the ultimate leadoff hitter,
who has plenty of speed, and can use the whole
field to poke singles and get on base. Jamie
Navarro was a staler in the bigs for several years,
and should be an ace in the rotation for manager
Tom O'Malley's Bears. O'Malley played 9 seasons in the bigs and ended his career with the Mets
in 1990. Baseball fans should be in fora real treat
this year with the revamped and exciting Newark Bears franchise. This is a great chance for

Neumann threw a 5-hitter and fanned 8. He also
excelled at the plate, by ripping 3 singles and
driving in 5 runs. Also wielding big bats for
Hoffman were catcher, Joe "Moose"McCarthy,
who pounded 2 singles and a double for 4
ribbies, Ralph Dante-2 singles and an rbi twobagger, and George Bongiorno-a triple and a
sacrifice fly.

Thunderbirds Soar
The Jersey Shore Thunderbirds 12-under
travel baseball team again impressed people
around the country. During the last month, the
T-Birds have won tournaments in Crownsville,
Md., South Amboy, and No. Branford, Conn.
The Conn. Win gives them a berth in the Triple
Crown World Series in Colorado in July.
The South Amboy boys on the club have
done very well. Brian "B-man" Seres is batting
over .700 and leads the team with 13 home runs.
Adam "AJ" Szatkowski is batting around .550
and hit his first 2 career homers. Mike "MikeyO" Ostrander is playing an outstanding 3rd base
and is batting around .450. Congratulations to
our local boys and the rest of the T-Birds!

With Kevin Burns and Kaitlyn Katko

TB: What was it like for you to score
your 1,000th point?
KB: It was very energetic in the beginning of the game. I wish we'd won.
KK: It was the high point of my career.
I enjoyed the attention, but at the same time
it was really a big goal I had. I hope to score
more this year.
TB: You've broken the single game
scoring record, and also cracked the 1,000
point mark. What other goals do you have for
senior year?
KK: I want to make 1 st team All-Area,
and really hope to make the GMC finals this
year.
TB: Do you miss not competing in other
sports?
KK: When I was younger, I got hurt
playing soccer, so I gave it up.
TB: What are your plans after high
school?
KB: I'm going to NJIT. I'll play basketball and major in Actuarial Science and Statistics. I'd like to be an Actuarial someday.
KK: To play Division 1, and I want to
study Sports Medicine. I want to help other
athletes if they have problems:
TB.: Why have you been so successful in
high school?
KB: Good support from my family,
coaches, teammates and friends helped out a
lot.
KK: My family. They don't push, they
encourage me.
TB: As a youngster, who were your
heroes?
KB: Michael Jordan
KK: My mom, uncle Jack, and grandfather.
TB: Who are your favorites? Athletes?
Actor? TV Show? Teams?
KB: Michael Jordan. TomCruise. Saved
By The Bell. The Mets in baseball, and
University of North Carolina in basketball.
TB: Who are your favorites? Athletes?
Team? Movie? TV Show? Bands?
KK: I really like Jay Williams from
Duke, Allan Iverson, and Tasha Pointer.
Philadelphia 76ers. Remember The Titans.
Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? Bon Jovi.
TB: Did you ever meet any celebrities?
KB: I met Bobby Hurley at camp. He's
a nice guy. Also, Jayson Williams.
KK: Jon Bon Jovi. He's real cool! I met
him with Pete Kenny. He's just like a normal
person. People think differently of him. I
also met Mother Teresa, and Stephon
Marbury.
TB: Kids look up to you. What's it like
to be their hero?
KB: I remember as a freshman looking
up to Eddie McCabe, who was probably our
best player. Even when I was in 6th grade, I
looked up to high school players. It meant a
lot. I hope they look up to me.
KK: It's cool! They always ask me
questions and are very into what I do. I don't
know why.
TB: Who is the toughest team you faced?
Toughest player?
KB:St.Joe's,mysophomoreyear. They
blew us out, with Jayson Williams. I didn't
guard him then, but I'd like to now. Also,
soph and junior years against South Amboy.
I got pumped up the most for those games.
KK: Bishop Ahr the second time this
year. I knew they'd come back strong, and
they beat us. Leah Thomas of South River, a
good friend of mine. She's really good.
TB: What was your most memorable
game?
KB: Junior year when we won the division, and I put the game winning shot in with
3 seconds left.
KK: When we lost to Spotswood, not
because of my 1,000th point. We lost because everyone was distracted with other
things going on.
TB: What does it mean to you to be only
the 4th boy in St. Mary' s history to score over
1,000 points?
KB: It means a lot, after all the great
players who've been here and didn't score
1,000. We also won the division every year
I was here, and that means a lot. It wouldn't
have been the same if we didn't have a
winning program. It's a real big honor!
TB: You should become St. Mary's alltime leading girls scorer, and have a good
shot at breaking George Krzy zanowski' s alltime school scoring record. What will that
mean to you?
KK: It will mean a lot to me. I hope todo it.
TB: What will you miss most about St.
Mary?
KB: Probably basketball and friends.
TB: Any chance of acting or modeling
in the future?
KK: Hopefully. I'm starting to do it
right now.
TB: You were almost in the movie,
Coyote Ugly, right?
KK: Yeah, but they cut our scene.
TB: How will St. Mary do in your senior
year?
KK: Last year everyone doubted us and
we won. We'll do real well.
TB: What plans do you have for summer
vacation?
KK: Basketball. I'm going to Texas. I'll
also play in the states and nationals with my
team. I'm also going to camp, and in August
I'm going to Europe.
*Kevin and Kaitlyn are two super youngsters who really appear to be going in the right
direction. They worked very hard to achieve their
impressive milestones in basketball, and with
their motivation and dedication, should continue
to excel in the game of life. My best goes out to
these fine young people!

An attic cleanup project recently uncovered from among my father's belongings, two World War 11 honor rolls dated
Oct., 1944, with names of approximately
1,000 locals in the service. Also two books
entitled "Battle Diary" of V.P.B. 121 by
R.J. Pflum. Lt. Comdr. Commanding, and
"I Took The Sky Road" by N.M. Miller
Commander V.P.B. 109.
Reminiscences encouraged further research of personal records and other items
saved. Cobwebs were jostled and recollections resurfaced of when the world went
nuts.
At the time these scrolls were printed,
I was in the Pacific, halfway around the
world, and had been there 8 months. In the
Navy, attached to a carrier aircraft service
unit (CASU) on a flat (El. 10 to 12') Coral
Island 3/4 mile wide and 2 1/2 miles long,
devoid of vegetation.
This is no ego trip, and with your
permission offer as a Memorial Day tribute.
"Served with the Occupation and Garrison Forces Eni wetok Atoll in the Marshall
Islands, the first Japanese territory taken
from the enemy by forces of the United
Nations," is taken from the jacket of my
service record. It was my home for 16
months.
Battled for and secured late Feb. 1944
a (400" x 7000' runway was constructed by
the C.B.S, where none had existed before.
The first plane (SBD) Dive Bomber)landed
on 3-5-44. The dates are correct. This was
a fantastic accomplishment. On 3-20-44, a
squadron of B-25's landed.
Our unit serviced and maintained patrol bombing squadrons VPB 108 and 109.
VPB 121, along with transients and also
had a replacement pool for carrier aircraft.
Bomber pilots were also checked out as
fighter pilots by our test pilots.
July & Aug. of '44 with ships of every
description covering all of the lagoon the
eye could see. One could literally walk
across the 20 miles on them. (Task Group
58.1) All in support of the Invasion of the
Marianas, (Guam, Sipan, and Tinian).
In this time period, our unit handled
1256 carrier aircraft involving 40 carriers.
Space is limited, but personal records can
supply names, dates, types, source & disposition.
Geographically going counter clockwise from Eniwetock around the Atoll perimeter, next to the Main Island was Parry
Island, smaller but also battle scarred. It
tendered a P.B.M. (Flying Boat Squadron).
The second island away and across the only
channel to the lagoon was Japtan Island, a
still smaller island but untouched by war.
Palm trees and covered with vegetation,
picture perfect as a South Sea Island paradise. This site was selected and I was
honored as one of the many attending the
ceremony dedicating the cemetery for those
who had fallen and were buried there.
Navy Lt. Comdr. Pflum in his book
said, "The runway at Eniwetok served a
dual purpose. Every takeoff and landing
recalled to mind that beneath this stretch of
coral were buried 5000 Japanese, killed
during the invasion of the island."
I do not have figures, but we stood at
attention at this dedication a LONG, LONG
time as each name and branch of service
was read. It did not come cheap. Though it
was supposed to be a dual service effort, it
seemed like 8 out of 10 were Marines.
The scrolls that started this writing was
missing my name. Keep it that way.
