Pickets to Cease

In the Movies
U.S. District Judge John W. Bissell
issued a temporary restraining order, forcing union construction workers to abandon
a picket line they had walked outside the
South Amboy's new community school
construction site.
The picketers began marching on the
site on June 16, about a week after a sheet
metal contractor hired for the job sent nonunion workers to the location to install heating and ventilation systems. Local 27 of the
Central and Southern New Jersey Sheetmetal
Workers International Association were justifiably angered, and by picketing the main
entrance to the construction site, were able
to shut down the work. Board Attorney,
Clark W. Convery then filed a complaint
with the Labor Relations Board.
Zoning Board
Rules on Delilah's
The South Amboy Zoning Board unanimously approved a resolution which outlines the type of entertainment that will be
allowed at the highly controversial Delilah's
Den. The Board decided that the new club
could offer the same kind of entertainment
that former nightclub owners offered on the
site.
15 Jobs May Be
On the Line
The City of South Amboy recently sent
letters to 15 employees, telling them that
their jobs may be in jeopardy come Sept.
2nd, unless the 1995-96 budget can be bal-.
anced. Problems began last year, when the
city received notice from the state that it
would not receive an anticipated $670,000
in state aid.
Those notified of the dreaded move
were 2 Police Sergeants, 5 Patrol Officers,
5 Public Works employees, and the shared
clerk-typist. The workers were given this
notice, 45 days prior to the potential layoff
date, which is in compliance with the state
mandate.
South Amboy Blood
Drive August 27
The South Amboy Community Blood
Drive, sponsored by the South Amboy Fire
Dept., South Amboy Lions Club, South
Amboy First Aid, and South Amboy Elks
Club, will be held on Sat. Aug. 27th from
9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the South Amboy

Sayreville Receives
$350,000
The Borough of Sayreville received
$350,000 in state aid, and both local Democrat and Republican parties tried to take
credit for securing it from the state.
Treasurer Wayne Kronowski said that
die Borough would receive $350,000 in
block grant funds. Sayreville will be allowed by the state to put the money straight
into surplus or use it in next year's budget.
The current budget cannot be opened, and
the tax rate reduced, because it has been
adopted and certified, and the tax bills have
been processed according to Kronowski.
Msgr. Sergei Dies at 65
Morgan's Matt Gomolka (L) and Paul Campanelli (R) of Laurence Harbor will be seen in next
spring's major movie "Big Night."
Matt Gomolka, of Gomolka's Auto
Body in Morgan has landed a role in the
major movie, "Big Night," which will be
released in the spring of '96. The film,
about two Italian immigrants who came
over to the U.S., and opened a restaurant in
a Jersey Shore town, was shot in Keyport.
Gomolka, assisted by friend, Paul
Campanelli of Laurence Harbor, is featured
in a scene operating the Gomolka Auto
Body's 1951 Chevy Tow Truck to deliver a
barber chair. Matt says that, "The two days
on the set were exciting! We hung out on
the set and met the stars." The movie was
directed by Campbell Scott & Stanley Tucci,
and stars Isabella Rosselini & Tucci. The
film should be really interesting, with a
local flavor, so don't miss it! Congratula-

Demolition Begins
at Raritan Bay
Construction crews recently broke
through exterior walls for the first time at
the Perth Amboy Division of Raritan Bay
Medical Center. Twobuildingsdatingfrom
1 yoy and iViS are now being demolished to
make way for construction of a five-story
tower, part of the medical center's Renewal
2000revitalization and construction project.
Raritan Bay officials, including Keith
H. McLaughlin, president and chief executive officer, and members of the board of
directors, will visit the site on Tuesday
afternoon. They will don hard hats and
survey the site at which one wing already
has been torn down.
Redevelopment
Reinstates Officers
Msgr. Francis J. Sergei, born and
raised in South Amboy, and most recently pastor of St. John Vianney Parish
in Colonia, died on July 6th, at St. Peter's
Medical Center, New Brunswick. He
was 65 years old.
Msgr. Sergei was ordained in 1956,
and was assigned to St. Joseph's North
Plainficld. He then served on the faculty
of Holy Cross High School in Riverside
from 1957-72. He became Pastor of St.
Mary's Perth Amboy in 1973, and Pastor of St. John Vianney in 1976. He wa»
named a prelate of honor (Monsignor) in
1991. In October of 1994, he was appointed Episcopal Vicar of Middlesex
County.
Msgr. Sergei is survived by a sister,
Mary Musolf of Cinnaminson, 2 cousins, and several nieces and nephews.

$10,000 Donation
South Amboy's Redevelopment

professionals. The Chairwoman is Judith
Lecki, Executive Director Kevin Meszaros,
Asst. Executive Director Derek Jess.
Madeline Bulman is the Secretary.
Moskowitz, Heyer & Gruel of Florham
Park have the contract for Planning Services. Legal Services are provided by
McGowan & Coughlin of S. Amboy. The
architect is Schmitt Anderson Architects of
Metuchen.
The Board of Trustees of the Dowdell
Library of South Amboy are pleased to
announce that Capital Ornamental Concrete
Specialists, Inc., of 90 Main Street, South
Amboy, have pledged a $10,000 donation
to the library. Mr. Norman Grossman,
president of the company, recently presented the first half of the donation to Mr.
Philip Israel, Library Director.
The donation means that the library
board can move forward with their plans to
automate the new public library. Presently,
the library is in the process of converting its
printed records to computerized records.
The donation will help provide funding to
purchase computers for the new library.
The new public library, currently under
construction, as part of the community
school project, will have room to hold more
than 50,000 volumes and seat 90. The
project is scheduled for completion in April
1996. The library's opening is planned for
early summer in 1996.

Talk Of the TOWnS
Kelly at Yankee Stadium
Times Poet Laureate, Al Gomolka, Jr., and
myself trekked to Yankee Stadium to see Tom
Kelly's Minnesota Twins in the first game of the
4-game series. We did gel to say hello to Tom,
and he was surprisingly in good spirits, despite
the fact that his club is off to the worst start in the
major leagues. Also spotted at the big ballpark
was Jerry Henderson, a fellow '69 St. Mary's
grad whom we had not seen in 26 years. We also
spoke with Kelly's daughter, Sharon, who was at
the game with Sayreville's Jim Greenhaus and
family. South Amboy's Bob "Zack" Sekerak
and sons Rob and Michael were also sighted
rooting for their favorites.
Locals Graduate Nursing School
The Raritan Bay Medical Center Charles E.
Gregory School of Nursing announced the following locals graduated in the Class of 1995;

Doyle Graduates Police Academy
Joseph C. Doyle, of Brick Twp., recently
graduated from the N.J. State Police Academy at
Sea Girt. Officer Doyle is employed by the Brick
Twp. Police Dept. in Ocean County, N.J. He is
the grandson of Jean & Harold Evans of South

A large crowd of parishioners and friends packed the church on the evening of July 6 to
celebrate a South Amboy landmark: the 100th Anniversary of Sacred Heart Church. Rev.
Joseph Romanoski (C), the church Pastor led the Mass and noted the importance of the
long history of this proud Parish. The altar was draped with banners of many of the church's
organizations including Sacred Heart Rec Club, C.Y.O., Holy Name Society, Rosary
Society, St. Vincent De Paul Society, Sacred Heart School, H.S.A., and the South Amboy
K of C 426 had their banner paraded into the church, marching with the 4th Degree. A gala
party was held afterwards, where participants enjoyed live entertainment and delicious

I find it hard to believe that there is not
one person out there who does not want
Robbie, the cat with the heart condition. He
is not a sick, laying around do nothing cat.
He is playful and most affectionate. To
know him is to love him.
Along with Robbie, I have a kitten and
6 healthy adult cats looking for homes. As
I have said before, they do not ask for much
- a clean litter box, food and a place in the
sun. They do not have to be walked, and
when you come home they reward you with
a meow (feed me) and a brush against your
legs (hurry up). Some cats are very affectionate and others are not. All have their
own personalities, just like people.
This is flea and tick season so please
take car of your pet, especially if you are one
of those uncaring people who leave the pet
tied up outside. This is a very unhealthy and
uncomfortable condition. Just imagine bugs
walking and biting all over your body.
Also, I hope you have had your dog

South Amboy was a quiet little town. "The
Pleasant Little City," back in the Fall of '59. when
Hoffman High's Class of I960 began their final
year at the John St. institution. The "cool cats"
probably got their kicks listening to the hit songs
of the day such as The Three Bells, Sea of Love,
Lavender Blue, and of course 'ol Elvis. The
Principal was Eugene Dobrzynski, and Assistant
Principal, William A. Kurtz... The yearbook was
dedicated to Elnora Dexheimer and Rose McNeal
... Charles Brinamen became the first Hoffmanite
in history to succeed a relative as Senior Class
President, as he followed brother James to the top
spot. John Maher was vice president, Treasurer Timothy Peterson, and Financial Secretary - Ann
Brennan . . . Kathleen Kriss was Editor of the
yearbook . . . Several popular teachers at Harold
G. were: Thomas English. Peter Fitzgerald, Aldona
Krakauskas. and Audrey Teich... 1960 marked
Hoffman's 1st ever National Honor Society, and
it consisted of 6 seniors, 4 juniors and 4 sophs. The

remaining, Tom Mulligan canned a free throw,

single, as the Eagles nipped Immaculate Conception of Trenton, 1 -0. It was also a memorable
game for Lou Lagoda, the Saints ace pitcher,
who fired a brilliant O-hitter... Kolodziejski had
a superb career in athletics at St. Mary's, and was
selected 3rd team All-State catcher in the Parochial B Class in his senior year in 1933 ... Many

Swimming: The Perfect Exercise?
Recreation swimming is probably one of
the best forms of exercise. It affords the swimmer a combination of cardiovascular and neuromuscular exercise without the joint trauma of
most other forms of exercise.
Consider that the advanced swimmers take
13 to 17 strokes per length of a 25 yard pool.
Beginning swimmers who are uncoached, or
who possess poor technical form, take 25 strokes
or more to swim that same 25 yard length. For
these types of swimmers, most injuries involve
one shoulder (not both), the Cervical spine and
the Thoracic spine. There is often a weakness of
the various muscles surrounding the shoulder
itself.
The neck of the swimmer is also placed
under great stress, since breathing is accomplished by turning the head to one side where the
breath is usually taken on every third stroke. If
the swimmer is breathing to one side throughout
(and this is usually the case), think what happens
to the muscular balance of the Cervical spine and
shoulders.
As the old saying goes, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." In order to
prevent injuries of these stressed areas, it is
crucial that warm up exercises be done before
and after the swimming sessions. The next area
of concern is the cervical spine. Swimmers
should start breathing on alternate sides. This
will help maintain the proper balance between
the various muscle groups. With a little bit of
coaching, swimming can be the perfect exercise.

Dream Season for Keeter & Thomsen

Pitchers Tracey Thomsen of Sayreville. and
Jamie Keeter of Hoffman turned in the type of dream
seasons most players neverexperience. Thomsen was
asuper 14-5 on the hill, struck out 125. and issued only
11 passes in 134+ innings, and turned inal.04E.R.A..
which included 7 shutouts, a new single season record
for the school. On offense, she batted .322, going 19
for59,with 14rbi's,anddid not strike out. Tracey was
also a golden glover, making only 1 error in 54
chances for a .981. A 1st team selection in almost
every newspaper, she became Sayreville's all-time
leader in victories-44, strikeouts-348, and ERA-1.42.
Tracey, perhaps the Lady Bombers' top hurler ever,
will take her many talents to Bioomfield College.
Jamie Keeter, an Oklahoma native, was virtually unhittable in almost every outing, as she finished

with a mind-boggling 19 wins and only one setback.
The victories tied Dawn Kaiser's school record for 1year. Using a repertoire of six pitches, she had batters
constantly guessing - usually wrong, as her changeup set others pitches up, including an extremely good
fastball. She led the county with a miniscule 0.69
ERA. and racked up 208 K's in 111 innings, while
walking 42. Jamie tossed - if you can believe it - 8
shutouts, 7- no hitters, 6- one hitters, and held opponents to a paltry .089 batting avg. She whiffed 10 or
more on 13 occasions, and gave up more than I earned
run only twice. 62.5% of Hoffman's outs were garnered on Keeter strikeouts. A 1st teamer in most
tabloids, we will undoubtedly be hearing much more
about her in the future, as she performs for St. Peter's
College.

Stratton Wins at Frog Hollow
Parlin's Jeremy Stratton won the 10th Annual Independence 5-mile run on July
1st. He crossed the finish line in 26:45. Margaro Morales finished 2nd in 27:09.
Emma Piccolella of Millstone copped the Womens' crown, coming in at 34:01. She
was closely followed by Karen Van Heest of Colts Neck, who ran the entire race,
barefoot, and clocked in at 34:38. In the 1-Mile Fun Run, South Amboy's Melissa
Braun took the girls' championship in 7:22. Luciano Oliveria was the Boys'
Champion with a 6:18 time.

Rich Klein is probably one of the most prominent and respected sports personalities in the area. I
had the opportunity to meet him for the first time in my
rookie season in the South Amboy Mens' Slow Pitch
Softball League in '71, and the more I saw him play,
the more I respected him. as did every other player. He
was the league's best hitter, fastest base runner, and
best defensive center fielder in the league then, and
probably the fiercest competitor toever walk on a field
in South Amboy. He is a true winner. Klein has been
an English and History teacher for over 20 years at
Hoffman High. He is a Softball coach supreme,
amassing one of the top records in the state: 240 wins
and 62 losses. He also coaches the Lady Guvs varsity
soccer club. He retired from playing Softball last year
in various leagues, after 25 plus highly successful
seasons, and can be found over the summer umpiring
the Mens' Slow Pitch League in South Amboy, or
coaching his son Richie's Little Fellas League team in
S. Amboy.
The Interview
TB: Through the years, yourgirls'softball teams
at Hoffman have produced one of the greatest wonlost records in the state. How did you do it?
RK: I've been blessed with some pretty good
athletes such as White, Check, Popowski, list, and
Keeter.
TB: As a softball player, what is your greatest 1
game performance? What is your fondest memory?
Why did you only play in South Amboy for 4 or 5
years?
RK: In an over4() Limited League Tourney. I hit
3 homers and a double in one game at an MCC field.
My fondest memory was when I was playing for CQ
in a MoniclairTournament against Yogi Berra's son
Dale, and in 6 games. 1 went 19 for 21. They weren't
going to have an M.V.P. award, but made a special
M.V.P. trophy for me. I only played briefly in S.
Amboy. because there was a conflict with all of the
other leagues that I played in at the time.
TB: How has softball changed today from when
you started playing?
RK: In Mens' the greatest improvement is the
aluminum bat. We used the Bulger wood bats before,
and now with aluminum, it's more of a home run
game, rather than defense, as it was when I begem
playing.
TB: Why do you feel that you've been far more
successful coaching softball than soccer?
RK: I know more about softball. I never played
soccer. It's easier to teach skills in softball.
TB: Your proudest moment in coaching high
school sports?
RK: Beating East Brunswick in '84 to win the
couniies. Nobody gave us a chance. We started 4
freshmen, and beat one of the best pitchers around.
Also winning the states in '86.
TB: You certainly could be called the Ultimate
Competitor. Where did this all-out drive begin?
RK: In the Cliffwood Little League. I played
center field, and we won the Monmouth County title.
TB: What were you like in Little League?
RK: I was fast and could run like crazy. I used
a Nellie Fox bat. choked up, and slapped the ball all
over.
TB: What is your coaching philosophy?
RK: In soccer, softball, and Little League, always be aggressive, make things happen, and pressure
the other team's defense.
TB: For any wanna-be Rich Kleins, what recipe
for success would you give them?
RK: Be committed, dedicated, and work hard
for anything you want to accomplish.
TB: After such a superb high school coaching
career, you could undoubtedly move up to the college
ranks. Any interest?
RK: I've given it some thought, and a lot deals
with recruiting, and I consider myself an on-the-field
coach.
TB: What was your greatest accomplishment as
a softball player?
RK: Making All-Tournament teams in New
York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.
TB: Sayreville had Tracey Thomsen, and
Hoffman - Jamie Keeler this past season, 2 of the best
ever. How would your club have done if you played
Sayreville in *95?
i RK: My teams have only played Sayreville 3
times since I've been coaching, and we're 3-0. It
would have been interesting. Janet Rvan does a nice

job. It would have been a good game with 2 of the best
pitchers in the county.
TB: If you had "95 to do over, would you have
trained a bonafide #2 pitcher to backup Keeter, in an
emergency, such as occurred in the CJ Group I state
semis?
RK: Jamie was going to pitch every inning as
was possible. Because we're in a small school, her
stats had to be as impressive as possible. Most softball
teams only have I legitimate pitcher. It's different
than baseball.
TB: How would you like to be remembered?
RK: As someone who was very competitive,
more importantly, someone who really cared about
softball and players. Not only my own team, but all
softball players.
Rich Klein is a fierce competitor, an outstanding
High School softball coach, respected teacher, and
winner with a capital "W". In my 20 years in the So.
Amboy Softball League, I've seen countless numbers
of talented athletes, but I feel that the best all-around,
multi-talented softball player in local history to perform at Veteran's Field was none other than the great
Rich Klein. It may sound a bit prejudiced, but it's
really not. In '73, Sayreville'sTom Kaelin played for
my Mechanicsville A.C. club, and most people felt he
was a bit betterthan Klein in all phases. I also thought
so then, but Kaelin was barred from further play in the
league, because he was an out-of-towner. The 4 or 5
years that I did see Klein play, erased any doubts, as
to who was the premier player. He was constantly
tremendous game in-game out, could hit the long
gapper for a homer, or burn you using either foul line
for extra base hits with his blinding speed. If you have
any doubts about my opinion, ask anyone who played
in the early '70's or had the good fortune to ever see
this South Amboy Softball Legend in action.

Some friends informed me that they caught
Brown Trout in the 3-pound class at Round Valley
Reservoir, on live Herring, drifting. Spruce Run
yields Largemouth Bass and a few good size Hybrid
Slripers. Delaware River fishing is slow due to the
heat and influx of tubers & boaters. Myself & cousin
fished for Muskies above Dingmons. and saw 2 roll
near us but we made only numerous casts. Some real
big Largemouths were caught recently from Farrington
Lake. "

clubs released theirfinal statistics. Coach Janet Ryan's
fine Sayreville softball squad finished at 15-5. The

Salt Water
Raritan Bay Fluke fishing is mostly shorts with
keepers at a 10 to 1 ratio. Three times in June I fished
with a friend and caught over 30 shorts combined. I
had 3 keepers, one well over 2 pounds. Fishing with
3 other people on a private boat, we hauled in 35 fluke
and only one was a nice 2-pound keeper. In the
beginning of July, two of us caught 20 shorts and 2
keepers, plus a Weakfish, which I caught on a Sand
Eel. More of these are showing in the bay, and are
being jigged along with small Blues. Ocean
Bluefishing remains good for party boats with sojne
Bonito showing for trailers and jiggers. I checked out
reports of Kingfish in the Long Branch surf, and
fished there on July 9 with the wife, but caught only
Crabs and 1 little snapper. Hit & miss Bluefish with
smaller fish prevails off the S. Amboy Beach. General bottom fishing remains good for blocks Sea Bass
& Ling.
