Strathmore is the gateway to the Badlands. We are 100 years young and are a growing community of 12,500. Close enough to enjoy the city attractions in Calgary but far enough away to enjoy the quiet rural lifestyle. A community where the prairies meet the wetlands. Where our proud past is part of our exciting future. We say “Quality of Life is a Way of Life”. We exude Quality of Life throughout our many recreational facilities. This includes a Family Centre with two indoor rinks, home of the UFA Bisons, a team that consistently competes at the Macs Midget Tournament in Calgary. The indoor Aquatic Centre features a six-lane competitive pool, waterslide, climbing wall, hot tub, children’s pool and diving board; something for the whole family. A four sheet curling rink, outdoor tennis courts, ball diamonds, soccer pitches an 18-hole golf courses are located in Strathmore for your enjoyment. We enhance the Quality of Life with our parks and pathways system that is continually expanding to ensure a walkable and active community. With over 50km of pathways, including a paved loop around the beautiful Kinsmen Lake and the wetlands at Grays Park, families and running enthusiasts enjoy a scenic route every day. Download the S’more Paths App from the Apple App Store today to track your route through town. Quality of Life is exemplified by an outstanding hospital with 24 hour emergency care, an excellent school system, admirable seniors’ residences and lodges, attractive neighborhoods with many well maintained parks. Kinsmen Park is in the heart of Strathmore where one can enjoy live music in the outdoor amphitheater, youth and seniors can enjoy fishing on the lake, and the kids can run through the Lions Slash Park in the summer. Quality of Life is celebrated year round by the thriving artistic and cultural community. The Strathmore Theatre Players are a highly successful group that puts on various plays throughout year. In the fall you can see what our local artists have to offer at the Arts & Sounds in the Park Festival. Quality of life is expressed through our amazing residents who dedicate their time to their community. There are numerous clubs and organizations available to adults, youth and seniors alike including the Happy Gangs Senior Centre and the Youth Club of Strathmore. Volunteers are always welcome to participate in major community events like Canada Day Celebrations, Heritage Days Stampede, the Santa Clause Parade & Celebration of Lights, and Relay for Life, just to name a few. I encourage all citizens to find something that sparks their interest and help make Strathmore an even better place to work, live and play. Strathmore is proud to have hosted the Western Canadian Junior B Softball Championships in 2004 and 2006, the ATB Alberta Cup hockey tournament in 2013 and 2014, the Tour of Alberta Pro-Cycling Race in 2013 and we are looking forward to the 2015 Alberta 55 plus Summer Games in Strathmore. You can enjoy our Quality of Life in our many local stores. Our shops and services will meet everyone’s desires. Strathmore is proud to have been named the Best Small Community for Business in Western Canada by Venture Magazine in 2012. We’re not stopping; we are looking to the future by offering more for our citizens. Future plans include more shopping, a revitalization of our downtown businesses and more family friendly facilities. Strathmore offers numerous development opportunities, with a broad base of commercial, industrial and residential land, primed for development. Whether you are visiting, looking to relocate your business, or looking for a new place to call home, Strathmore is a place you will find caring, friendly, compassionate people. Welcome to our Home! Known as one of Canada’s fastest growing communities, Strathmore provides the idyllic lifestyle for families, with a high-quality standard of living. This community of over 12,500 boasts spirit, excellent recreation, business opportunities and a strong education system. Strathmore offers all the benefits of living in a safe community, but also has the advantage of being a community just 22 minutes east of Calgary. A quick drive down Highway 1, west of Strathmore, leads right into one of Canada’s largest cities. Families are provided with all sorts of recreational opportunities from the Family Centre; which boasts Olympic and NHL sized ice surfaces, to the Aquatic Centre, which includes a kiddie pool, hot tub, water slide, multi-purpose room and lane pool. Additionally, Strathmore has soccer fields, baseball diamonds, numerous parks and walking paths, a golf course within the town, and various golf courses in close proximity to the town. Strathmore’s Parks Department strives to provide parks, open spaces and pathways that enrich the leisure needs and quality of life for citizens. The community endeavours to establish playgrounds that are appropriate for a wide range of ages and offers opportunities for creative fun. Kinsmen Park is a fantastic spot for families to enjoy year-round. Located in the downtown core, Kinsmen Park has pathways, ice skating in the winter, gazebos, picnic benches, docks for fishing, a playground, washroom facilities and a brand new amphitheatre. A popular destination on a hot summer day is the Lions Spray Park, located on the south end of Kinsmen Park. The spray park includes a great variety of colourful spray apparatus that are activated by touch. Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate the Ducks Unlimited projects and variety of wildlife at many ponds and wetlands throughout Strathmore. Gray’s Park, located on the east side of Wheatland Trail, is a great spot for families in all seasons. Throughout the winter it is a normal sight to see people gathering for a game of shinny or for a leisurely skate. During the warmer months the well used paths come to life as people enjoy the wildlife, flora and fauna in their natural habitats. Spirit drives this community and there are hundreds of opportunities to get involved. No matter what your interests are, there is something for you. Volunteers are always welcome to participate in major community events such as the Canada Day celebrations, Heritage Days, Relay for Life, and the ever-popular Celebration of Lights. Being involved in these events, or those put on by the many schools, churches and community service groups, brings people together to develop lifelong friendships and the opportunity to give back. Strathmore is a bustling community with a wide-range of housing available. Whether you want to be close to downtown, or schools, modern residential developments, brand new subdivisions, adult communities, or townhouses, there is plenty to choose from in affordable price ranges. Thanks to the East Calgary Regional Waterline, Strathmore is now being supplied with potable water from the City of Calgary. The line was finished, successfully commissioned and has been in service since January 2012. To supplement the potable water is the new wastewater treatment plant, managed by EPCOR. Strathmore can now meet the water demands of a population of more than 30,000 residents. If you want to re-locate to a community that has plenty to offer and is a short distance from Calgary; the Strathmore quality of life is well worth the drive. For a town this was a significant stretch of track because it ended that day on the south side of what was later to become the unloading point for thousands of settlers. The CPR was empowered with naming the hamlets that sprang up at its sidings as the steel ribbons were laid across the country. Although it is not recorded who named the original site Strathmore, it is known that a Scot named James Ross was in charge of the project and he was inclined to giving Scottish names to the sidings. In 1905, with the development of the irrigation system, the original Hamlet of Strathmore was moved four miles north and centered around the 5,600 foot siding there. This move to its present location is what gave the town its legacy “the town that moved”. By 1886 the intensive advertising campaign, launched by the Federal Government with the CPR to bring settlers west, was beginning to work. The Town was booming with lots being opened for sale in 1905 and by 1906 the CPR began selling land at $12 to $15 per acre, with irrigable land at $18 to $25 per acre. By 1906 both irrigation water and settlers from the U.S. and the “old country” were pouring into Strathmore and the CPR began planning for the development of what was to become a world demonstration farm. The farm was designed to act as both a model and an instruction tool for settlers, many of whom had never farmed before. The majority of the 2,000 acre demonstration farm was cultivated and almost 700 acres was irrigated. As time progressed, so did the farm’s development. In order to supply the tourist trains that were traveling to the Rockies, the CPR grew vegetables and flowers for the dining cars and CPR hotel facilities. In addition, “to make the area seem like a Shangri-La to the immigrants”, there were experiments with exotic plants. Although Strathmore and area was settled and developed by the CPR, by the middle 1950’s it was obvious that highway competition was eliminating the railway’s freight business. But it was not until 1981 that the actual last rail was removed. Yet the CPR left Strathmore a living legacy – the irrigation system. Tuned over the users in 1944, the irrigation system continues to operate today under the management of the Western Irrigation District. Although the rodeo is a huge part of Heritage Days, the many visitors to our community will enjoy all that rural fair has to offer, along with many added features that will appeal to all ages. The famous Running with the Bulls event, which patterns itself after Spain’s Pamplona, is a heart stopping, exciting two nights that brings people from all over to watch the brave (and maybe a little crazy) people run with the rodeo bulls that would just as soon hook you and trample you as they would run by you!! Just what the audience wants!! You will be entertained daily with rodeo events that bring top Canadian and American cowboys and cowgirls to test their abilities against the best rodeo stock in North America. The Strathmore Heritage Days Rodeo is the third largest Pro Rodeo in Canada and you can be assured that with this kind of prize money up for grabs, you will see the best of the best in the arena. Following the rodeo each day is the Half Mile of Hell races. The WPCA brings out the best of the 36 wagon drivers as they pit their horses and their driving skills against each other to come out on top. Exciting is a non descriptive word when it comes to Chuckwagon racing – you have to be there to experience the pounding of the horses and the dirt flying in the faces of the outriders! The roar of the fans is just as loud as the pounding hooves as the teams reach the final homestretch and race to the finish line in front of the grandstand. You just have to be there! The Encana Stage draws hundreds to listen to the musical talents of the big ticket names and the local celebrities, each and every day and night of Heritage Days. Between entertainment numbers, before and after the rodeo and wagon races you will want to wander around the grounds taking in all the agricultural displays, the trade and craft show and petting zoo. And do not forget about the FOOD!! Many concessions that offer the most tempting of dishes and the candy floss and candy apples – the staple of all fairs! If you do not find something that meets your idea of entertainment then you’re just not looking!!
