The session was interactive where the speaker shared the real time experiences and also clarified the basic doubts on Planning for Economic Development with reference to Indian Context. The event was organized for students of Batch 2014-16 by the Economics Faculty Team of KCT Business School. Institutional and Trade credit by Mr.Arun Aravind, Mr.Sarath Nair, Cluster Head, Tamil Nadu and Mr.Mahesh Krishnamurthy, Senior Credit Manager, HDFC Bank Ltd, Coimbatore on November 3, 2014 A Guest Lecture on Institutional and Trade credit was organized on November 3, 2014 for II MBA finance elective students. Mr.Arun Aravind, Mr.Sarath Nair, Cluster Head, Tamil Nadu and Mr.Mahesh Krishnamurthy, Senior Credit Manager, HDFC Bank Ltd, Coimbatore were the resource persons. The discussion addressed the practical aspects of Institutional and Trade Credit, and the students were given an insight to the opportunities available for Trade credit in banking institutions. Kumar, Program Manager / Consultant-SAP on November 5, 2014 Mr. K. Kumar, Program Manager / Consultant-SAP delivered a Lecture on the topic ‘e-Supply Chain Management’ on November 5, 2014 to 90 students (II year operations and system specialization students and PG Diploma in Oil & Gas Industry).The speaker made an elaborate presentation on the role of e-SRM and eCRM in supply chain and its benefits to the suppliers and customers. The advantages for suppliers and customer when connected with Internet in the supply chain were discussed. He emphasized that organizations should not earn profit instead it should maximize profit. Production Planning and Control Strategies by Mr. Rajesh Arumugam, Senior Manager- Assembly & Testing, ZF Wind Power Coimbatore Limited, Coimbatore on November 5, 2014 A guest lecture was conducted for the operations specialization students of 2013-2015 batch by Mr. Rajesh Arumugam, Senior ManagerAssembly & Testing, ZF Wind Power Coimbatore Limited, Coimbatore on ‘Production Planning and Control Strategies’ on November 05, 2014. The session began with an introduction to ZF Wind Power and their operations. He said that planning forms the nerve centre of any organization and explained the importance of demand forecasting for proper production planning. Insight about the VSM concepts being followed at ZF and about the Automated Storage and Retrieval system of material handling were given to the students. Practical examples with case studies on reducing the non-value added activities, cycle time reduction and improving the inventory turnover ratio provided an in-depth learning of concepts to the students. Strategies for Not- for –profit organizations by Bindu.N.Nair, Managing Trustee- AROH foundations, Coimbatore on November 6, 2014 It is always interesting to speak about the NGO’s, their history and legal status said Ms. Bindu. AROH Foundation is a leading National level NGO, strengthening government programs and CSR activities of several corporate and PSEs by providing total integrated solutions. AROH foundation helps children suffering from lifethreatening diseases like cancer, HIV, renal and heart diseases by providing treatment, counseling and Palliative care. During her session, Ms.Bindu said that Volunteering and funding are the two biggest challenges faced by any NGO, she requested the students to involve themselves in social workers to help serve our society. She shared her thoughts on the functionalities of NGO’s and also enlightened the students on the legal compliances required to start an NGO. Ravi, Chief Financial Officer, Roots Group of Companies, Coimbatore on November 7, 2014 A Guest Lecture on Breakeven Point and Marginal Costing applications in manufacturing organizations was organized for the batch 2014-2016 students on November 7, 2014. Mr. K. Ravi, Chief Financial Officer, Roots Group of Companies, Coimbatore was the resource person. Mr.Ravi.K explained the concept, importance and relevance of Breakeven Point and Marginal Costing applications in business. Managing Technology and Innovation by Mr. Koushik Rajendran,Co- Founder,Healtho5 India on November 7, 2014 Mr. Koushik Rajendran an alumnus of KCT addressed Students of batch 2013-15 on managing technology and innovation on November 7, 2014. He expressed the importance of change in strategy to match the changing technology and innovation. The guest lecture was arranged as a part of Strategic Management. Services Marketing Strategies in Hotel Industry by Ranjana Singal, Partner, The Terra Co (That’s Y Food and On the Go Coimbatore) on November 10, 2014. Ranjana Singal. Partner, The Terra Co (That’s Y Food and On the Go )Coimbatore delivered a highly informative lecture on the topic Services Marketing Strategies on Hotel Industry, with her real life experiences and learning’s to marketing specialization students of Batch 2013-15 on November 10,2014. Students were exposed to the significance of Ricky (Market Research) and understanding customer needs before venturing out into a new business and also highlighted on Innovations in Services which was vital to enhance Time Effectiveness while taking orders. Her new Restaurant “Café Totaram” stood witness to the fact that reducing wastages was essential. 6 | KCT Business School Monthly News Bulletin November 2014 Talking about her failures helped her envision “On the Go” and measures taken to rectify them, she also added that her take away from her MBA had helped her building strategies in the long run and conducting an effective market research. This program was coordinated by Nalini P, Assistant Professor, CoM Strategies for Family Managed Business by Mr.Peter Arokiam Managing Director,Manickam Radiators Pvt.Ltd on November 12,2014 Mr. Peter Arokiam addressed the second year students of KCT Business School on November 12, 2014 on Strategies for Family Managed Business. He spoke about the opportunities and the challenges in the family managed business. According to him Family businesses are the lifeline of India’s economy. Almost 90% of Indian businesses are family-owned, which makes the rest of the business community largely dependent on them. Mr. Peter reiterated that the greatest challenge in Family managed business is the gap between family generations. Inward-looking, owner centric, smaller scale, with a restricted perspective, and conservative mindset are the biggest challenge in the family managed business. His speech was highly informative. Students raised lots of questions and the session was interactive. System elective students of batch 2013- 2015, had a great opportunity to get educated on “Application of Business Intelligence in Business Industry” on November 12, 2014. His session included the various facets of Data Warehouse and Business Intelligence, Data Mining, Role of Data Mart and applications of business intelligence across different verticals in an organization. The lecture spectrum also covered the regulations of BFSI Industry. Wide coverage was also given to financial regulatory actions across the globe. The highlight of the program included the application of Business Intelligence tools and techniques for the transformation of raw data into meaningful and useful information for business analysis purposes and critical incident discussions. Mohan K, AGM & Regional Head, Federal Bank Ltd, Coimbatore on November 13, 2014 Shri. Mohan K, AGM & Regional Head, Federal Bank Ltd, Coimbatore gave a holistic view of Federal Bank, its evolution, growth and the challenges on November 13, 2014 to students of II MBA batch 2013-15. He talked of specific strategies that Federal Bank had followed to keep above the competition one of which was using technology. Mr. Saravanan, Asst. The resource person started with an introduction giving the facts and figures of Indian Demography and the spending potential of the people in great urban and rural. She deliberated on various concepts that include the moving segments and changing needs of the people with effect to their Income, mindset, awareness, aspiration, Maslow’s need theory relevance to shopping behaviour, shift in purchase pattern, impulse shopping. The programme was organized by Consumer Behaviour Faculty Team Dr. Poongodi B and Latha A, Assistant Professors CoM Customs Documentation and Procedures by Mr.Kalyanamoorthy, Operations manager, SDV international logistics limited on November 18, 2014 The center for Marketing, organized a Guest Lecture for Logistics and Distribution Management on November 18, 2014 on Customs documentation and procedures. The speaker was Mr.Kalyanamoorthy, Operations manager, SDV international logistics limited. All the core marketing students from second year MBA attended the program and gained knowledge about the import and export procedures, classification of goods for customs and procedures to export and import goods and its implication on trade. The session was facilitated by Mr.Ravi, Life Skills Coach and Trainer. The guest lecture was organized as a part of the Managing Organizations course. Mr. Ravi discussed with the students about the importance of time. His activity focused on reinforcing the idea that to manage time effectively, students need to passionately pursue goals. He also discussed about the Important Urgency Matrix of Stephen Covey and how students need to prioritize their activities to manage time and to benefit from the MBA program, this program was organized by Mr.Aruneesh and Mr.Nithin, student coordinators and Kirupa Priyadarshini Associate Professor CoH Corporate Financial Budgeting and Control practices by Ms. B. Dhanalakshmi, Senior Manager – Finance, Lakshmi Machine Works Limited, Coimbatore on November 21, 2014 A Guest Lecture on Corporate Financial Budgeting and Control practices was organized for the batch 2014-2016 students on November 21, 2014. Ms. B. Dhanalakshmi, Senior Manager – Finance, Lakshmi Machine Works Limited, Coimbatore was the resource person. Ms. B. Dhanalakshmi explained the concept, importance and relevance of Budgets; the lecture also highlighted the budgeting done by corporates, its objectives, types and process of preparing a budget. Dr.Radhika Meenakshi Shankar, Founder, Wise Owl Consultancy, Hyderabad provided inspiring insights on entrepreneurial spirit for the students on November 21, 2014. Dr.Radhika Meenakshi Shankar is a trainer, consultant and mentor for MSME's. The program provided inputs on value proposition that entrepreneurial mindset creates for both entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs. The students enjoyed the program with great interaction. They learnt to use value propositions to measure the impact of all their activities with an entrepreneurial spirit. The Program was coordinated by B.L.Lakshmi Meera, Assistant Professor, CoM. Sustainable CSR – From Ideas to Action by Mr.Leo Arun, Corporate Trainer and lead-CSR. Pricol Corporate Services Ltd on November 25, 2014 Mr. Leo Arun addressed the IMBA students batch 2014-16 of KCT Business as a part of their corporate ethics and social responsibility subject. He spoke about CSR provision in Companies Act 2013 and the activities that can be undertaken by a company to fulfill its CSR obligations. He spoke about “We Care” a CSR initiative of PRICOL. The program was coordinated by Ms.Deepa Manickam, Assistant Professor, CoH 11 | KCT Business School Monthly News Bulletin November 2014 INDUSTRIAL VISIT Sundaram Auto Components Limited - Chennai on November 15, 2014 Forty eight students of MBA visited Sundaram Auto Components Limited Chennai on November 15, 2014 to understand the manufacturing practices being followed in their organization. The visit started with an orientation on the company history and its various departments. The students were taken through the stages involved in the manufacturing of plastic auto components through moulding process. Plastic moulding is the process of shaping plastic using a rigid frame or mould. The technique allows for the creation of objects of all shapes and sizes with huge design flexibility for both simple and highly complex designs. Students observed the four major process like Preparing the Mould, Injection of Polymer, Melt into the Mould and Unloading of the moulding. They enquired about their clients and quality control procedures followed in SACL and were actively involved with Production and HR manager. This Industrial visit was organized and coordinated by R.Vinayagasundaram Associate Professor CoO and Lakshmi Meera B L, CoM DELL - Chennai on November 15, 2014 Forty eight students of MBA visited DELL Chennai on November 15, 2014 to understand the assembly process being followed in their organization. The students were then taken through the stages involved in the assembly process of building laptop, desktop and server. The students were taken inside the factory in two batches by the supervisors. They explained about the assembly process of the laptop and desktop. The students observed how the various parts are assembled in a computer. The processes of assembling the computers are fully automated and they manufacture according to the order placed through on-line. Various quality control charts were used and students asked about quality control procedures followed in DELL. Students interacted with the supervisor. This Industrial visit was organized and coordinated by R.Vinayagasundaram Associate Professor CoO and Lakshmi Meera B L, CoM 12 | KCT Business School Monthly News Bulletin November 2014 EXECUTIVE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification from November 15&16 and 22&23, 2014 An Executive Development Program on Project Management Professional, PMP Certification was organized by the Centre for Operations at KCT Business School for working professionals in service and manufacturing firms. The program objective was to impart knowledge and skills essential for a project manager in successful completion of projects. In addition, on completion of the program the participants can attempt for a global certification which can add a lot of value in their career. The program was structured with four modules (Module 1 &2 – Class room sessions, Module 3 – Discussion session and Module 4 – Mock Exam) starting from November 15 to January 10, 2014. The program covers the Project Management terminologies, global standard for project management, fundamental practices needed to achieve organizational results and excellence in the practice of project management. Mr.Girish, made an elaborate presentation with live examples on the topics covering all the functional areas required for a Project Manager to know in managing projects effectively. Topics on Project Risk management and Project Integration Management were also discussed. Participants were very interactive and involved in all the sessions. Feedback received from the participants was very good. 18 participants from various organizations (largely IT) participated in the program. Dr.S.Jaisankar, Associate Professor organizes and coordinated the program. 13 | KCT Business School Monthly News Bulletin November 2014 OUTREACH Training Program for Airport Authorities of India Ltd Project Delight your passenger is the outreach initiative of the HR Centre to identify the training needs, and to impart training for the stakeholders in airport for improving the customer experience. There were three programs that were organized in the month of November. Ms. Lakshmi Subramani served as a resource person for a session on how the Security staff, trolley staff and the cab drivers can serve as a link to enhance customer’s satisfaction. Her talk started with a focus on how they should have a pride in working for the airport, their experience in handling different customers, and how they can ensure they arrive and leave the airport with pleasant experiences. Dr.Kirupa Priyadarsini, delivered a session for the airline counter staff on Emotional Intelligence at work. The training needs for the commercial staff included self awareness, improving self esteem and enhancing workplace relationship. Her session focused on how customers experience is predominantly measured as emotions. The participants at the end of the session were able to relate how customer’s value can be enhanced by being emotionally intelligent. Ms.Deepa Manickam delivered a talk to the Central Industrial Security Force personnel on Motivation. The session was delivered in Hindi. The CISF personnel’s training needs involved stress management, self motivation, enhancing relationships and working in teams. There were 67 staffs who benefited from the program. The program was very lively with relevant workplace situations discussed and deliberated. A few mudras were also taught during the session to the participants for general well being 14 | KCT Business School Monthly News Bulletin November 2014 CERTIFICATION PROGRAM Certification Program on Laws Relating to Industrial Relations on November 1, 2014 Certification program for II year, HR specialization students was conducted on Laws Relating to Industrial Relations, the resource person was Mr.G.Balasubramaniam, Company Secretary Roots Multi Clean Ltd., Coimbatore, also designated as Finance Controller – International Operations of Roots Group of Companies. The Objective of this program was to help students learn industrial democracy, and the conflicting interest of the individuals, group and the community. The program covered Acts like Factories Act, 1948, Minimum Wages Act, 1948, Employees Provident Fund and Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 1952, Contract Labours Act, 1970, Industrial Disputes Act,1947, Equal remuneration Act, Payment of Bonus Act, 1965, Apprentice Act 1961. The first session of the certification program was conducted on September 6, 2014 and the final session was conducted on November 1, 2014.The Certification Program was coordinated by Ms. Deepa Manickam, Assistant Professor, Centre of HR Certification Program on Tally ERP 9.0 Certification from November 1 to December 07, 2014 On November 01, 2014 Center for Finance initiated the Tally ERP 9.0 Certification Program for 40 hours from November 01 – December 07, 2014. The knowledge partner for the Certification Program is M/s. Indra Institute of Education, Coimbatore. Ninety students of batch 2014-16 registered for the certification program. The program will cover the basic tally modules of Book Keeping and Accounting Concepts, Accounting, Inventory, Financial and Voucher management in Tally 9.0 ERP software. Ms.P.Mohanamani, Assistant Professor & Dr.V.R.Nedunchezhian, Professor are the faculty coordinators for this Certificate program. 15 | KCT Business School Monthly News Bulletin November 2014 Diploma in Banking and Finance The Students of Batch 2013-15, Divya. R, Krish Lokesh Yadhav.K, Dheepan. V.S and Vijayaraghavan.M have cleared the Diploma in Banking and Finance exam offered Indian Institute of Banking and Finance, Mumbai. This course was coordinated by Sangeetha S, Assistant Professor (SRG) CoF WORKSHOP Technical Analysis for equity market investments on November 11, 2014 A one-day workshop on Technical Analysis for equity market investments was organized on November 11, 2014. The participants were 51 finance elective students of batch 2013-2015. Mr. Mr.K.Annamalai, Director, Annamalai Capital Services (P) Limited, Coimbatore facilitated the workshop. Mr.K.Annamalai gave a presentation on the basic concepts of Technical Analysis, Dow Theory, constructing technical charts with historical data, interpreting the trends in the chart, identifying the buy, hold, sell signals from the charts and inferring the stock market momentum. Students were later assigned to prepare stock charts for the companies. The participants actively interacted with the workshop facilitator. The student coordinators for the workshop were Mr.Jairam, S.K, Ms.Hemathevy, Ms.Hemalatha, Mr.Ramachandran, Mr.Naveen Kumar, and Mr.Saravanan. G of batch 2013-15. The faculty coordinator for the workshop was Mr.A.Senthil Kumar, Assistant Professor (SRG). 16 | KCT Business School Monthly News Bulletin November 2014 FOREX Trading on November 12, 2014 A workshop on FOREX Trading was organized on November 12, 2014 for 63 participants from II MBA finance elective. Mr.Ram Kumar, Equity Analyst, Akshaya Investment, Madurai was the resource person. The session began with an Introduction about currency market, foreign exchange derivatives. Later participants had hands on experience of reading currency quotes for futures and options and different strategies used in options trading were also discussed. Professor Swaminathan and Ms.P.Mohanamani, Assistant Professor were the faculty coordinators for the event. “How to crack Banking Exam”? on November 13, 2014. The Centre for Finance organized a Workshop on “How to crack Banking Exam”? on November 13, 2014. Mr. Dixon A.K, Professional Trainer, from I sharp Academy Coimbatore, was the resource person. He briefed the students on the syllabus of the bank exams as well taught the shortcuts in quant’s. 47 students attended the programme. The program was coordinated by Ms.Sangeetha. S Assistant Professor (SRG) CoF 17 | KCT Business School Monthly News Bulletin November 2014 Evaluation of Training Effectiveness on November 15, 2014. A workshop on "Evaluation of Training Effectiveness" was organized for the II MBA HR elective students as a part of the course on training and development on November 15, 2014. Mr. Maria Jude Antony, Deputy Manager Learning and Development, Elgi Equipments was the resource person for the session. The students were given an activity to generate a report in MS- Excel with the details of the employees, with training attended. The students were unable to generate the report as it required the use of specific tools in Excel. The skill gap was thus identified. The techniques were taught to the students and the skill gap, addressed. The effectiveness of this mock training attended was evaluated; the facilitator also discussed the different practices adopted in their organization pertaining to the Kirk Patrick's model. Students greatly benefited from the program. This workshop was coordinated by Dr.Kirupa Priyadarsini, Associate Professor CoH Cyber Law and Intellectual Property rights on November 20, 2014 A workshop on Cyber Law and Intellectual Property rights was organized as a partial fulfillment of Legal aspects of Business course for the I MBA students of KCT BS on November 20, 2014. The major objective of the programme was to familiarize the students with the current developments in Cyber Law, Information management and Patenting and Copyrighting. Mr S.N. Ravichandran, an activist of Coimbatore Cyber Crime cell hoisted the workshop. The workshop covered various perspectives of sharing information through social media 18 | KCT Business School Monthly News Bulletin November 2014 for the benefit of student community. Various delinquent and sensitive issues of white collar crimes and scams was also taken up with reference to corporate affairs. Apart from cyber law and security, the workshop gave an impetus on Intellectual Property Rights (Patents and Copyrights) with special reference to John Doe orders and Evergreening (Novartis). The concept was explained to the students of Batch of 2014, with the help of a classroom activity. A sale of stationery and a few household items of various brands were procured and sold through a small retail set up by a few students inside the lecture hall. The rest of the students were given specific directions by the course instructor to buy certain items. A few were asked to be brand specific, a few were asked to be price conscious and a few were asked to book train and flight tickets. After the purchase, the students were asked to discuss on the various elements of a market, number of players (sellers and buyers) in the market and the pricing strategy adopted by the flight operators, Indian Railways and FMCG companies. Subsequently, the students were briefed on the various pricing strategies used by companies quoting experiences from the activity. There were two activities, one on Assembly Line and another on Business Case Analysis Assembly Line Activity The students were split into teams comprising of 7 per team. Students had to forecast the demand and accordingly they have to manufacture the cups. They had to fix a price for the cups that they were to manufacture. Assembling the cup activity helped the students to understand the principles of product design, the process and the complexities involved in assembling a product. Business Case Analysis The next activity was on the supply chain case analysis of Kellogg’s and jumble word puzzle on technical terms in operations management. Students were given live case studies on Kellog’s Supply Chain Management. The case dealt with all the basic concepts of supply chain and the various strategies that were followed by the company. Environment League- AIKYA On November 16, 2014, Environmental league organized a trekking to Thoovaanam Falls. 39 Students from Batch 2013-15 and batch 2014-16 along with faculty members Sangeetha.S Assistant Professor (SRG) and Senthil Prakash, Assistant Professor trekked nearly 6 kilometers. The members enjoyed the nature as well learnt the specialty the forest and falls. The programme aimed at exhibiting many financial and bank products. People from various institutions like LIC, Annamalai capital services, APSAL, DSP BLACKROCK MUTUAL FUNDS displayed their products in our B-School. They clarified the different equity, mutual fund, life insurance and non life insurance products. The students showed keen interest in knowing about them. The event was organised by Professor. V.R.Nedunchezhian & Ms.S.Sangeetha Assistant Professor (SRG) Financeopedia A special event was organised on International Accounting for first year Students. The programme was designed based on the famous Programme “Oru Vaarthai Oru Laksham. This was a game conducted for Batch 2014-16 students. 36 members were clubbed into 9 teams. The main objective of the game was to test the knowledge on Financial Jargons. The game had three rounds and each round had eliminations. The following are the Winners of the event. Sessions included Effective self Introduction, Building Effective Resume and How to do effective GD. The objective of the session is to create awareness among the students about the expectations of the corporate from students in GD. Students were told to concentrate on 3 C’s Communication, Content and Clarity. Feedback & comments were given to each student to fair well in future group discussion during their interview process. Day Two of GDPI included, conduct of Personal interview for each student and Online aptitude Test, Domain Knowledge check and Psychometric analysis in media-median-mode.com. The panel Members included Mr.Ganeshan, Head HR-L&T; Mr. Mohan, Relationship Manager-YES Bank;Mr.Ravi,CFO-ROOTS; Mr.Vincent Paul, HR Manager- Lotus Group; Mr. James, Launchpad –LLC. Interviews were conducted for each student with an objective of assessing the interviewee’s potential and suitability for a job/career in desired field. Students underwent such training for the following companies TTK Services, Mahindra Finance, Bajaj Capital, HCL Infosystems limited & Next Education.
