Rabén & Sjögren is Sweden’s largest publisher of
books for children and young adults, with a publication
exceeding two hundred new titles and two hundred
reprinted titles each year. We publish books by Swedish
as well as foreign authors and illustrators and since
2007 we have an extensive publication of non-books;
activity books, puzzles, games, etc. Since 2011 also
digital publication of e-books and apps.
The publishing house Rabén & Sjögren was founded in
January 1942, by Hans Rabén and Carl-Olof Sjögren.
They were both art historians, but well-versed in the
publishing world. Two years later, through a literature
contest, Astrid Lindgren was discovered and the
following year the first book about Pippi Longstocking
was published, which led to a long and successful
cooperation.
All of Astrid Lindgren’s books were published with
Rabén & Sjögren and she also worked as an editor
and was in charge of the children’s books department
between 1946 and 1970. During her time, Rabén &
Sjögren became Sweden’s leading children’s books
publisher, a position kept to this day. We are proud
to have many of Sweden’s well-known, award-winning
children’s books authors and illustrators on our list.

Rabén & Sjögren also has a considerable publication
of translated books, among others J.K. Rowling’s
books about Harry Potter, as well as Kitty Crowther,
Aidan Chambers, Roald Dahl, Meg Cabot and Michelle
Magorian.
Our 2012 publication is characterized by its interesting
and cutting-edge selection of books from both wellknow and brand new authors and illustrators as well
as backlist favourites.
Since 1998, Rabén & Sjögren has been a part of
Norstedts Publishing Group, which publishes fiction,
non-fiction and reference books. Norstedts was
founded in 1823 and is Sweden’s oldest still active
book publisher.
Hurray for 40 years
with Alfie!
In 2012 Alfie Atkins celebrates his 40th anniversary. During
four decades he has been the main character in twentyfive stories and has established himself in the forefront
of Swedish children’s culture. Today, Alfie Atkins is a
picture book classic, which year after year ends up at the
top of the lists of most borrowed books in our libraries. In
Sweden alone close to five million Alfie books have been
printed and the books have been translated into about
thirty languages.
In the fall of 2012, the twenty-sixth book about Alfie Atkins
will be published.
Alfie’s world contains the bustle of everyday living as well
as the grand philosophies and eternal questions. And in
the middle of the ordinary there is something magical.
Perhaps this is why everybody loves him. These days Alfie
Atkins transcends not only the generational boundaries
but also the boundaries between nations.

It begins with a letter. The letter that Vendela writes one evening when she feels like she is the loneliest person in the world.
Everything is so unfair. Gabriel doesn’t care about her, Mom
doesn’t exist anymore and on top of it all, her best friend Minna
has moved to London. Vendela doesn’t really know why, but
she takes the letter down to the stream and shoves it between
two rocks by the water’s edge. Maybe somebody will find it
