Preparation of page files IMAGES Method > The images need to be supplied as 8 bit in CMYK; > Any images supplied as RGB which then need to be converted to CMYK, as well as colour intervention and the production of colour proofs, have to be agreed in advance. B/w images in 4 colour process GCR (Grey Component Replacement) > On b/w images in 4 colour process, GCR HEAVY must be applied Resolution > The resolution of images is determined by the print linescreen. To print 175 lpi (70 l/cm), the ideal resolution is 300 dpi in the final format. To define the ideal resolution of an image based on the linescreen, one can use Photoshop: image > image dimension > auto. Minimum > The minimum print percentage must not be less than 3%. ICC Profiles > The ICC profiles have to be chosen based on the paper type in print according to the ISO 12647-2 parameters. You can request the Profiles directly from us or from the website: www.eci.org 1 Paper types defied by ISO 12647-2 standards Paper type 1 = 115 g/m2 glossy coated, wood free Paper type 2 = 115 g/m2 matte coated, wood free Paper type 3 = 65 g/m2 LWC web offset Paper type 4 = 115 g/m2 uncoated white offset Paper type 5 = 115 g/m2 uncoated yellowish offset Maximum Coverage - TAC (Total Area Coverage) > The TAC in the dark areas of images must not exceed certain values based on the paper type. Gloss and matt coated papers: maximum TAC 330%. Uncoated papers (offset): maximum TAC 300%. On certain uncoated papers (such as Arctic Munken Print), a maximum TAC of 250% may be requested. Registration Format The images can be saved in the following formats: > TIFF (LZW compression) > JPEG (maximum quality) > EPS.JPG (disable the PS colour management) Images in grey colour scale in Pantone must be saved as TIFF (LZW compression) File delivery > The image files are generally “heavy” in terms of megabyte so it is best to supply them on CD, DVD or HDD (hard disk drive), or they can be uploaded onto our FTP as compressed files in batches of maximum 200MB, or via email for files of 10MB and under. FONTS > The complete “screen” and “printer” fonts need to be supplied each time (PostScript type 1, True Type or Open Type) . Please also check that they are active and not corrupt. > For vector files generated by Freehand or Illustrator and saved in EPS, all the fonts used need to be supplied. In alternative convert all text into outlines. > If the fonts are sent via email or FTP, it is best to compress them and we recommend the use of Stuffit (.sitx) instead of Zip (.zip). LINES > Positive lines not less than 0,15pt (0,053 mm) > Negative lines not less than 0,30pt (0,106 mm) on a single colour 2 PAGE LAYOUT > Always produce the document in the same size as the final file (expressed in millimeters, where possible); > Always add the trim (bleed) of at least 3 mm; > The image boxes have to be transparent, and must be the same size as the image; > The text has to be produced as a separate colour (eg. black text); > The text must be on a separate layer. This is important for eventual co-editions, and also because each co-edition text has to have its own name (eg. French text, Italian text... ); > The creation of spot varnish has to be done on a separate layer on the same job layout, if the spot varnish is “shaped”, create a bitmap image coloured in varnish colour; > We recommend that for 100% black background areas you apply a reinforcement of 30% cyan or 40% cyan, 30% magenta, 30% yellow; 3 DENOMINATION OF FILES > File names must not contain symbols (/,), %, & etc); > Files names must not contain more than 32 characters (including the spaces); > Files names for single page files have to carry the edition identification and the corresponding page number, for example: ITA_001.pdf / UK_001.pdf / USA_001.pdf / ecc. ecc. or for the general CMYK COLOR_001.pdf this is true also for groups of pages: ITA_001-200.pdf COLOR_001-200.pdf > Corrections: the single page files must carry the date of the modification/correction together with the page number, for example: aaaammgg_ITA_001.pdf aaaammgg_COLOR_001.pdf SUPPLYING FILE > Together with the imposed files, the high resolutions, logos and fonts must be supplied. From Quark Xpress it is possible to carry out a data collection of the document, from Adobe applications you can create a “packet”; > Whenever possible the layout should be accompanied by the relevant layout (b/w or colour) of the final job version. > The jobs have to be grouped together subdividing them into folders containing: - layout - font - images; > The files can be uploaded onto our FTP site as compressed files in batches of maximum 200MB, or on a CD, DVD, USB, HD; or via email for files of 10MB and under. 4 CREATING A PDF USING JOBOPTION You will be supplied with a .joboption file with predefined settings for the correct creation of the PDF file. > From Adobe applications: > From Quark Xpress: 5
