NYU’s Skirball Center for the Performing Arts is located at 566 LaGuardia Place at Washington Square. Nacho Duato has made an indelible contribution to Spanish dance. After a highly regarded education and career at the Rambert School in London, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center and the Nederland Dans Theater in Holland, Duato returned to Spain in 1990 to take over the Compañía Nacional de Danza. CND2 was created in 1999 as the Compañía’s junior company. Together with Assistant Artistic Director Tony Fabre, a former dancer with Compañía Nacional de Danza, Duato has made CND2 a highly seasoned company in its own right, with dynamic dancers and a global audience. The Skirball Center program will include Jardi Tancat, Duato’s first piece of choreography. Created when Duato was a member of Nederlands Dans Theater, the piece premiered at Nederlands Dans Theater 2 in December 1983 and was first performed by Compañía Nacional de Danza at Madrid’s Teatro Albéniz in April 1992. Jardí Tancat (Catalan for Closed Garden) is based on Catalonian folk tales collected and sung by Maria del Mar Bonet. With a sweet yet passionate melancholy, these folksongs and their dance portrayal tell the story of the people who work the barren land, praying to God for the rain that does not come and enduring with great spirit in the face of hardship. L’Amoroso is the first dance Duato created expressly for the CND2, who performed its world premiere at Teatro de Madrid in May 2004. In it, he uses a selection of Italian baroque music, which, combined with the freshness and youth of the dancers, results in a dynamic, vital performance. In Gnawa—premiered by Hubbard Street Dance Chicago in March 2005 and first performed by Compañía Nacional de Danza in November 2007—Duato seeks to transmit, through the medium of movement, the sensuality of the Mediterranean landscape and peoples. The work takes its name from mystic Muslim brotherhoods that use music and dance to reach a state of ecstasy. A score featuring organic, percussive Spanish and North African sounds complements the elegance of the dancers. Led by Artistic Director Hervé Palito and Co-Artistic Director Fabrice Edelmann , CND2’s dancers are Elisabet Biosca, Eva Boiro, Alba Carbonell, Heejae Choi, Hugo Cortey, Sandra Guénin, Eliton Barros, Giuseppe Dagostino, Camille Granet, Erez Ilan, Jessica Lyall, Doron Perk and Antonio Sisca.
