Issue 38 Winter 2004 Notes from the Directors Happy Holidays! As the end of our busy year approaches, we’d just like to take a moment to thank each and every one of you for all of the love and support you give the retired racing greyhounds from Arizona Adopt A Greyhound. Our program and the hounds are truly blessed! We are always very busy with festive holiday outings this time of year — check the website for upcoming events. Our gift shop will be open every Friday night until December 17th, and also on Saturday, December 11th from 10 am – 1 pm for last minute shopping. Our elves will help you find something special for everyone on your list, including your four legged friends! Don’t forget, our program will be closed from December 19th – January 3rd. We hope you have a wonderful and safe holiday, and that all of your New Year’s wishes come true! Kari and Kiersten Holiday Safety While the holidays can definitely be stressful for the humans, it can be worse for your pets. Please keep them safe and healthy during this busy time of year. • Don’t over do it on the treats, especially chocolate, which can make your greyhounds very sick. Keep those sweet treats up and out of their reach! • Be careful of sharp or breakable ornaments and decorations. These are almost too much for a curious greyhound to resist, and can be dangerous if ingested or broken and stepped on. • My greyhounds have been known to unwrap the gifts under the tree if left unsupervised too long, so take extra precautions to keep them out of reach. • Boy Greyhounds & Christmas Trees Your male dogs will think that Christmas has come in the form of Indoor Plumbing — the easiest way to protect the tree is to opt for a table top variety or reconcile yourself to having a fence (x-pens work wonderfully) around the tree. Otherwise both you & your greyhound will be frustrated!! • It has cooled down fast, and your greyhounds will get cold very quickly if left outside too long. If you will be spending time outside consider a coat for your greyhound to keep him or her warm, and never leave them out for long unsupervised. • Take extra precautions to keep your greyhounds safe at home during parties or when guests visit. Many greyhounds get out this time of year during the excitement of the season. Doors and gates are more likely to be left open, so be careful not to lose your pet. There is nothing worse than missing your beloved greyhound during the holidays, and it seems to happen every year. continued on page 3 In This Issue AAGI Survey . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .2 Waiting at the Bridge . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .3 2004 Picnic with the Pups . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .4 Wonderful Volunteers . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .5 Greyhounds on the Greens . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .6 Poops & Scoops . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .7 2 AAGI Survey As AAGI grows as a program we have more and more needs for services, products and contacts. We are forever asking ourselves “Don’t we have someone in the program who is a _______?” or “Who do we know that is in this business or who does that?” Sometimes it is because we need a favor or would like to get the best deal possible — and sometimes it is just because we would like to do business with greyhound lovers and supporters. We need YOUR help to expand our database to include information that will help us answer those kinds of questions in the future. We also want to expand our database of greyhound knowlegable veterinarians. Please take a moment to send in this quick survey — we promise not to share the information with anyone else. Holiday Safety continued from page 1 A Quick trick to induce vomiting: In case your dog ingests chocolate, or any other Holiday treats, a quick way to get them up is to use salt to induce vomiting. It works faster than hydrogen peroxide, is always available and has no after effects like gas from the bubbles. Please note that a single piece of chocolate or other goodies won’t hurt your greyhound. It takes about 10 pounds of chocolate to damage a greyhound size dog — so don’t panic unless they eat the whole box!! For an average greyhound, mix a tablespoon of salt with enough water to make a moderately thick solution, just pour or use a syringe, to get it into the side of their mouth. This usually works in less than a minute. What if they eat the ornaments? First, don’t induce vomiting. Before the holiday go to a pharmacy and buy a box of cotton balls. Be sure that you get cotton balls...not the “cosmetic puffs” that continued on page 7 4 2004 Picnic with the Pups Bo Peep & her Sheep oyalty I’m Egyptian R Goldilocks Our annual picnic, held on Sat November 6th at Phoenix Greyhound Park was another smashing success. A little over 500 greyhound owners came out to spend the day with all of their wonderful hounds. It is always such a special treat for the AAGI staff to see all of the adopted greyhounds come back for a fun day. Thank you for making time to attend this event. The costume contest was, as always, the hit of the day! What a riot to see the great imaginations of some of our adoptive families, and the greyhounds are always so tolerant of it all! Our judges had a real challenge choosing the final winners, but here are their selections: 1st Place: Jemma as Little Bo Peep & Chief as the Sheep Owned by: Kim and Connie Short 2nd Place: Kyro as an Egyptian Princess Owned by: Cindy Adams 3rd Place: Billy & Zanzi as Goldilocks and the 3 bears Owned by: Charyn & Ray Wieneke 4th Place: Maggie as a Hawaiian Girl Owned by: Julia Arnette The Blur of Fur was also great fun with friendly competition for "bragging rights" to the fastest time: Fastest Time: Stitch (42.9 sec) Owned by: Wally & Peggy Ringhoff 2nd Fastest Time: Roe (42.7 sec) Aloha Owned by: Shannon Taylor Slowest Recorded Time: Loni (8.2 sec), owned by: Ralph & Rita Graichen Thank you to RU2 Systems for letting us use their radar system again for this popular event. We raised close to $10,000 to help keep AAGI in operation plus found loving homes for 16 of our "I’m Available" greyhounds. Thank you to everyone for helping us make this day a huge success!! Just under 100 people came out for brunch and to be recognized for all of their hard work and time given to AAGI. We have so many wonderful people who volunteer in so many different ways — from attending events to helping with nail trim and bathing days to fostering and helping with administrative and special projects — and on and on. Our brunch is the time where we thank everyone who makes this program a huge success. Congratulations to our Co-Volunteers of the year: Gil & Joyce Cropper & Bill & Blossom Geiger. These wonderful volunteers work tirelessly for the retired racing greyhounds, attending every event imaginable and always helping when called on. Thanks for all you do for us! As our program grows, so do the number of volunteers. At our first Volunteer Appreciation Day, we had 35 people, at this years brunch there were almost 100. We are blessed and want to say thank you once again to all of the fine people who give of their time for the greyhounds. We recognized all of our Petsmart Captains for their tireless efforts, plus our foster families, those special AAGI volunteers who open their homes to our four legged babies. Sometimes this care is for dogs who need extra special attention before they can be a pet, sometimes it is to ease the load in our kennel or for dogs being returned. We presented "Service Pins" to those volunteers who have been with the program for longer than 5 years, a tradition started in 2001. Each person was presented with a bright blue pin which is engraved "AAGI Volunteer Since 19xx". Watch for these pins on the veteran volunteers whenever you attend an AAGI event. We also had a few 10 year Volunteer pins to present. Thank you again to all the volunteers who make our job so much easier. We are always looking for newcomers to help us grow, so if you would like to get involved, please let us know. 2004 Volunteers of the Year (L-R): Gil & Joyce Cropper, Sharon Diebel, AAGI Volunteer Coordinator and Blossom & Bill Geiger. 5 Year Volunte ers Foster Families Nail Clinic ains PetsMart Capt 5 6 Greyhounds on the Greens The 2nd Annual Greyhounds On The Greens Golf Tournament, held at ASU Karsten on October 16th was a huge success! We could not have asked for more perfect weather, although a few dark clouds kept us guessing. There were greyhounds on the course to help welcome and register the golf participants. At registration, golfers had the chance to purchase a bag full of ways to help their game – a 20’ string to move the ball closer to the hole, 2 "free throws" to toss the ball closer, and 3 mulligans. Once they reached their golf cart, they found a goodie bag that Special Thanks To: TEE BOX SPONSORS Phoenix Greyhound Park Pro Pac Pet Food Goober Express Abbott's Men's Shop Indian Motorcycles of Phoenix Countrywide Home Loans International Institute of the Americas Max's Sports Bar Arivada Kennel Henry & Midge Snook Masiulewicz Grey-Kids Glenn & Cathie Smith & Lacey Bethany Animal Hospital Greyhounds Make Great Pets Internet Radio Show Nestle Purina Pet Care Primerica Financial Services TV Apache & Twice Tonight GOLF CONTRIBUTORS included AAGI-logo golf balls, hats, water bottles, and misc items. Help AAGI While You Shop Don’t forget to link your Basha’s Thank You card to AAGI and every time you shop we’ll receive 1% of the sales as a donation. The Thanks a Million program runs September 13, 2004 to March 31, 2005 and this will be the 3rd year AAGI has participated. Next time you shop just tell the cashier to link your card to number 27502. That’s all there is to it and you only have to link once. Spread the word and help us earn donations this easy way. Please remember you have to re-link each year so if you have helped in the past you will need to link your Thank You card again. Greyhounds on the Greens continued from page 6 Longest Drive in Fairway (women): Sarah Orosco Straightest Drive (hole 14): Tom Orosco Straightest Drive (hole 18): Dennis Ross There were a lot of fun players – and lots of them were good golfers! We raised just over $7,000 for AAGI & the hounds. We were thrilled with the tournament and the comments from the golfers indicated they also had a greyt time. A special thank you goes out to Clyde Solenski and the tournament committee for everything they did to get things organized. We would also like to thank the AAGI volunteers who came out with their dogs — as always we couldn’t do it without you. We look forward to next year and another successful tournament. If you missed it this year, don’t be left out of the fun in 2005. Holiday Safety continued from page 3 Raise In Fee Due to increased operational costs, mostly in veterinary care, we will be increasing our adoption fee to $200 beginning January 1, 2005. The adoption fee will still include all of the same veterinary services along with a collar, leash and ID tag. We try to keep our adoption fee low but we have to be able to provide for the greyhounds that come through our program. Just to give you an idea of the issues faced by the program this is the direct cost for each greyhound that we adopt. Veterinary (spay/neuter, vaccinations, dental & microchip) $150 Collar/Leash/Id Tag 12 Food (1 month on average) 10 Kennel cost (1 month) 75 Total $247 Does not include phone, van and other operational costs to say nothing of the dog with a medical issue or that stays longer than 30-days. It becomes quickly apparent why AAGI is always so grateful for our fundraising events. Please, those of you who work with the public, start quoting this new fee beginning in January. are made from man-made fibers. Also, buy a quart of half-and-half coffee cream [also called light cream] and put it in the freezer. Should your dog eat glass ornaments, defrost the half-and-half and pour some in a bowl. Dip cotton balls into the cream and feed them to your dog. Dogs under 10 lbs. should eat 2 balls which you have first torn into smaller pieces. Dogs 10-50 lbs should eat 3-5 balls and larger dogs should eat 5-7. You may feed larger dogs an entire cotton ball at once. Dogs seem to really like these strange “treats” and eat them readily. As the cotton works its way through the digestive tract it will find all the glass pieces and wrap itself around them. Even the teeniest shards of glass will be caught and wrapped in the cotton fibers and the cotton will protect the intestines from damage by the glass. Your dog’s stools will be really weird for a few days and you will have to be careful to check for fresh blood or a tarry appearance to the stool. If either of the latter symptoms appear you should rush your dog to the vet for a checkup but, in most cases, the dogs will be just fine.
