Woman South Asian Spring Edition 2014 93 book Review SHADOWS IN THE SUN Any South Asian woman suffering from depression or a mental illness should definitely read Shadows in The Sun by Gayathri Ramprasad. Needless to say, this book can save a life, whether you are a man or a woman. Like Ramprasad’s parents, many parents nowadays, overlook the signs of depression that are lurking within their children; therefore, I really recommend this book to parents as well. It is a heartwarming story of how Gayathri Ramprasad, a girl growing up in Bangalore then later migrating to the States, dealt with the serious mental illness that is so often taken for granted — depression. Beautifully written, Ramprasad explains the story in a way where you can visualize a vivid picture of what she is talking about. This book offers a voice of hope for recovery to people that may be suffering from the same thing but don’t see a light at the end of the tunnel. The way Ramprasad described some of her major struggles, not only with depression, Author: Gayathri Ramprasad Review By: Char Nair but with the shame and stigma she had to put up with from her family culture was engrossing. She is a true definition of an advocate and an extraordinary survivor to mental illness. Readers are walked through the intense smell of jasmine and turmeric to flickering oil lamps that once lingered around her during childhood to the lowest low of how anxiety and depression took over her life. I really appreciated how Ramprasad didn’t sugar-coat the situation and how she openly shared her story, regardless of how she thought others would perceive her. This admirable memoir written courageously by Ramprasad takes you through her 30-year battle from adolescence to marriage. It was only after her first child that she sought out the help she so desperately needed in order to find the light to the end of the dark tunnel she was travelling through. Her fearful journey is victorious and that is what makes her a legendary hero to so many!
