Her hopes will be to exit in the same position. The 22 year old barrel racer from Boerne, Texas hauled to 87 rodeos during the 2015 regular rodeo season. Callie will be wearing the No.2 back number second only Trevor Brazile. “This year my largest win, money wise, was at the Calgary Stampede. I ended up winning $41,000 overall in second place. My biggest win was at St Paul Oregon where I won 1st place winning $8,000. My most special win this year was when Dillon and I won the Pueblo Colorado Champions Challenge. This was special because I felt like the run was flawless and it put me in the lead for the world standings,” claims Callie. duPerier rides the infamous buckskin gelding, Rare Dillion (Dillon) who is 15 years old. Dillon was trained by Annesa Self, Valley View, Texas and won the BFA World Championship Futurity in 2006 as a 5 year old. Carlee Pierce, Stephenville, Texas bought Dillon from Self. Dillon carried both riders to the NFR; Self in 2008 and Pierce in 2011, 2012 and 2014. Pierce and Dillon hold the reserve fast barrel time in the Thomas and Mack Arena with a 13.46 set in 2011. “Over the fourth I got entered up correctly by having the right horses entered at the right rodeos, thanks to Sherry Cervi. I ended up being the third high money winner over the fourth with $20,262,” says Callie. “Sherry is someone I look up to and she is great. Hauling with her was awesome and she helped me a lot this year not only with my barrel racing but also getting to know her as a person. She would get even more excited than I did when I did well.” By Kathy Thornton Callie has won $211,727 just in the past two years. Before rodeo, Callie enjoyed a sucessful career in high school and college volleyball. “My favorite rodeo of 2015 was the Houston Rodeo because it has always been a goal of mine to run there and for my first year there I ended up winning my series and making it back to the finals. It was The turning point this year, luckily, came also my favorite because it is where my fiat the very beginning of the season in ance, Kaleb (Apffel) proposed to me as Kissimmee, Florida where Callie won the soon as I got back to my trailer from runChampions Challenge. This win set her up ning in the finals,” relays Callie. to be invited to the other challenges for being in the number one position. “I’ve always wanted to be a special needs teacher. I love kids. I am getting married Callie explained, “Overall, at all of the in May and I really want to be a stay at Champions Challenges, I was the high home mom. I can’t wait to have my own money winner with over $30,820 won.” children,” explains Callie. With wins at the Gateway rodeos and Calgary Stampede she was sitting second in world standings early in the 2015 season. “Being able to stay on the road is a big transition. I am a homebody so being on the road was a big change for me. Also, the rodeos are different when you get on the road competing with such tough competition at them all,” continued Callie. “My family is my biggest support; fatherTrip duPerier, mother- Cheryl duPerier, brother- T.J. duPerier and sister: Lydia duPerier. My sponsor is the Texas Landmen, who is my dad’s real estate firm, that sell farms and ranches all over Texas. They play a huge part in all of my success. I wouldn’t be able to be out on the road doing what I love without them,”states Callie. “I will have my dad at the finals helping me in the alley every night and helping me take care of the horses. I will also have Whip Lash, our driver who used to drive for Cody Ohl, there helping take care of the horses as well,” says Callie. Callie rides her two horses herself and keeps them in shape. She doesn’t have an outside trainer. “Dillon is resting right now and I ride Arson about three times a week to keep him in shape. I will go to a couple of barrel races before leaving for the NFR to get them running again. My dad is really good at keeping my horses sound. He’s probably at the barn more than I am. He loves taking care of the horses,” proudly states Callie. “I am very superstitious. I have all the same gear on Dillon that I started riding him with except a pair of boots. They were so worn out the velcro wouldn’t stick anymore. And, like with my clothes, if I do well with the shirt I wear the first night I’ll wear it the next night. I won’t care. Hopefully, I’ll stay in the same outfit the whole time,” laughs Callie. Top 15 Barrel Racing Lineup, pages 24-25. Yeah…..you know what I’m talking about. YUK!! The other day I could smell one when walking into one side of my bedroom. I looked under the bed, behind furniture, inside drawers, etc. No luck. The temperature was cooling down outside so I decided to open up the windows, turn the fan on and pull fresh air into the bedroom in hopes that would help. It was weird. It seemed to get worse! After 4 nights of sleeping on the couch and the fan running constantly, day and night, the smell was getting weaker. we can quote if our heart STINKS!! We simply turned the fan on to blow fresh life from a heart holding on to rotten things! The words we speak may be TRUTH…. but the essence permeating the atmosphere is repulsive. Instead of bringing life and joy it has the opposite effect. It’s actually no wonder some people are repulsed by the gospel instead of being drawn to the Lord. No amount of deodorant can cover up the fact that someone hasn’t bathed in a week. Just so, no amount of religiously decorated speech can offset the crappy feel that permeates the air when spoken from a heart filled with deadness. We had gotten a wonderful rain one day You simply can’t fake real life!! When the and I turned the fan off to enjoy its sounds source of the stink was inside the fan… and smells. Later that evening after the .turning the speed on a higher setting isn’t rain had passed; my bedroom smelled algoing to make the smell get any better. most normal again. I turned the fan on and Quoting scripture while embracing a rotten instantly could vaguely smell dead mouse. attitude does nothing to minimize the bad Just a hunch, I looked into the fan and odor! You can’t cover up the stench of whallah!! Low and behold the mouse car- something that’s dead. We have to deal cass was IN the fan itself!! No WONDER with the issue and get the decay out of our keeping the fan on wasn’t helping!! hearts! Geez!! I was fumigating the room with a rotting mouse carcass!! What What attitude or opinion am I holding on SHOULD’VE helped by pulling in fresh to that stinks? Am I holding unforgiveair actually made it worse because the ness? Has a bitter attitude creeped into my source was INSIDE the apparatus!! heart? Has pride or greed crept in and gained a foothold down inside? One thing That’s exactly the same result we get when is for sure, just like that dead mouse in the we speak right words and Biblical truths fan….no matter how fresh the air is that out our mouths when our heart is harborblows through, if something is dead ining things attributed to death instead of side….there will be no refreshing affect life! It doesn’t matter how much scripture until that which stinks is removed! About eight months after finishing her first set of treatments, Welsh made a trip to her friend Rachael Myllymaki's. "I saw on the internet that Rachael had been winning some rodeos on a horse and when she agreed that she might consider selling him, I went. I was still in a wheelchair and pretty weak so I just had her show him to me and make sure he made a nice pattern. That was it, I bought him," Welsh recalled. By Laura Lambert Although every one of us has a story, few have one quite like Jill Welsh. To say that she is an amazing competitor doesn't even begin to describe the Parker, Ariz., cowgirl. Welsh has competed in more than just the rodeo arena for years now and she is a winner at each and every competition. It was three more weeks before she even got on his back. When she did, it was with great care. "Custer has done so much for me. It is so much more than just what he does inside the arena. I'm not saying that he doesn't do great things inside the arena because he does. What he has done for me outside the arena though is priceless," she said. Custer has done great things inside the arena. In fact, the 11-year-old palomino gelding by Frenchmans Guy and out of Dashing To Fame has done so many incredible things, he has earned the respect of the top 15 girls. Custer was named WPRA/AQHA Horse of the Year for 2015. An amazing feat given that he didn't finish inside the top 15 standings for the year and normally the award goes to a horse that will be making a trip to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. "My brother was there every step. It seems kind of funny looking back that I was actually like a small child but, my brother walked right beside me to make sure I stayed on. He "I literally almost wrecked my car when I hand walked me around the place on him so got the news. He's so gentle and kind-hearted. Honestly, he is the reason I kept getting up every day and trying to get moving," Welsh said. The pair was well on the way to making their first appearance at the Wrangler NFR after being the high money winner over the Fourth of July run. Things were falling into place and Welsh was living out her dream. "I just went where I wanted to. Honestly, the rodeos I got to go to this year were my dream places. I picked the ones I wanted to go to and then just tried to do my best," she said. Late in the competition year, tragedy struck when the great duo came tumbling down to the ground. Some bad ground caused the pair to take a pretty nasty fall and took Custer out of competition for three weeks. Both horse and competitor were lucky to walk away without major injury. Unfortunately though, those three weeks were important ones on her quest to Las Vegas. "I was blessed that my friend, Megan Lewis let me borrow her good horse for Omaha and a few other rodeos. That horse is amazing and super tough. I was just a little slow everywhere and it sure wasn't the horse. I just needed another week or so to get the hang of it and I didn't have that time. I guess I knew at Omaha that my chances were probably shot but you know, that's rodeo. It just wasn't meant to be this year. "I'm starting this year with the same dream, and I'll keep that dream until something else tells me different. I want to be at the Wrangler NFR. I am excited that I get to go to the winter rodeos this year and we will just see where it all takes me. I'm so thankful for all the good that has come. I had an exceptional year this year. I can't say enough about how honored I am and thankful to all the girls who voted for Custer. It is truly incredible," Welsh said. For a young girl who has overcome so much, you can bet her extraordinary attitude and amazing amount of try will get her anywhere her heart chooses. story courtesy/WPRA, photos by Dale Miller SEMINARS, SYMPOSIUMS, TRAINERS, ADVISORS, EXPERTS DEC. 2015 16 C L I N I C S 2015 DeCember 5-6 Aubrey, TX ed Wright barrel racing Clinic Contact Deanna 214-577-0333 or [email protected] 18-20 Karnack, TX Josey ranch Christmas 3 Day barrel racing Clinic Christmas 2014 "One on One" Instruction with R.E. I just knew right there I blew it, but it worked out.” The Amateur barrel racing went much smoother. By Tanya Randall Taci Bettis of Round Top, Texas, had a week to remember at the AQHA World Show in Oklahoma City, winning both the Senior Barrel Racing and Amateur Barrel Racing world championships with her 7year-old gelding Bogie Is A Smash. “This win is extra special because not only is it the first time ever for me to win the seniors or the amateur, but it’s been a rough few weeks for my family after losing my husband’s grandfather. Smash knew just what we needed; he made the wins extra special, and I know Pop is so happy for us.” Bettis, 24, qualified for the Senior Barrel Racing Finals after placing ninth in the prelims. “He was snappy around his first barrel and he really took off,” said Bettis of her Senior Finals run. “He was really snappy around the second barrel. I had to lift my leg, and I lost my stirrup. On my way home, I went to start whipping and I started sliding out of the saddle. I about “I just wanted to stay clean,” she said after turning in the fastest time in the Amateur prelims. “I was thinking four clean runs would be great. I never would have guessed that I would win it. I had practiced the night before I kept him out at the second, so he wouldn’t drag it over leaving it. During my run he stayed out there and was a little wide, but it worked out.” Bred by Sid and Randi Rae Britt, Smash is by former Columbia River Circuit Champion Bogie Biankus out of Bogies Devine Smash, by Remember Smash. Multiple National Finals rodeo qualifier Tammy Fischer had purchased the 2008 gelding as a 3-year-old, and Bettis purchased him from Fischer two years ago. “He had only been to two jackpots when I bought him,” recalled Bettis, who has been riding with Fischer for at least 10 years. “I had been riding him for her when she left for the summer, and I told her she needed to let me buy him. She told me no and said she really liked him. She ended up selling him to me and that’s the best thing that’s ever happened. He’s loved at our home.” Bettis grew up competing, but with a single mom trying to pay the way, it was tough. She persevered with the help of her mother Lupe Zepeda, brother BJ Whitworth, husband Jeremy and good friend and mentor Tammy Fischer, all of whom she offered her deepest thanks. “I’ve been riding since I was 3,” she said. “It took everybody for me to be able to be going. With just my mom, it was hard because it’s a very expensive hobby. She always took an extra job or missed out so I could go. It’s all I ever wanted to do. Without my family, I wouldn’t be where I am today.” Her mother eloquently posted her “Rags to Riches” story in a Facebook post. Lupe wrote: “My cup truly does runneth over...Not only did I spend a whole week of quality mother/daughter time...But to have witnessed Taci bring home two AQHA World Championships. Taci’s journey started at a real young age. The day she turned 3, we celebrated with a birthday party and I had her entered at her first Youth Rodeo that night. (Leadline) After a few years we noticed her determination & want to win. It takes a team to do this, so we formed one. With lack of funds in our house hold when she was growing up, her brother would find an awesome broke down horse, I would buy him, BJ would then put the horse back together, coach her and she did the rest. It’s not easy or cheap to put a horse back together, so BJ as well as myself would take on extra jobs to be able to keep her and her horses going. This went on for years and years. Three years ago she married the most wonderful and supportive guy in the world. We couldn’t have hand-picked a more perfect guy for her! He followed into our footsteps and is now doing the same thing for her. Still today it takes a team and we’re all in there for her including Tammy Fischer!” With Smash in her barn, everything that Bettis has worked for over the years started to come to fruition. “He’s been fabulous,” Bettis said. “He shocks me more and more with what he can do. He’s not the friendliest horse to be around. He’s the quirkiest horse I’ve ever been around. He doesn’t like to be petted on or loved on. He does his own thing.” D E C, 2 0 1 5 22 AQHA World Show November 10-11, 2015, Oklahoma City, OK Senior Barrel Racing - Level 3 Finals 1 Bogie Is A Smash, Taci Bettis, 16.141 2 Smokin Koa Lena, Joy Wargo, 16.298 06 b. g. My biggest win was at St Paul, OR where I won 1st and $8,000. My most special win was when Dillon and I won the Pueblo CO Champions Challenge because the run was flawless and it put me in the lead for the world standings. Dillon carried Annesa Self and Carlee Pierce both to Wrangler NFR berths and set the then NFR arena record in 2011 with Pierce. He spent months in ICU at Littleton, CO and has pulled through this life threatening bacterial infection. “My husband Grady is my biggest influence, and always has been along with being blessed with some amazing horses over the last 10 years!” Brunswick, GA $134,599 52 rodeos Wrangler NFR qualifications: 1 (2015) Main Ride: Bling WNFR Back No. 5 “ In 2015, we won Ft. Worth, won our set at San Antonio- finishing 3rd and had a top 4 finish at Houston. My parents Mike and Carol McDonald are super supportive. I have an older brother Matthew McDonald and an older sister Brook Williams. My niece Anna Williams is also running barrels. My Uncle Stephen McDonald has picked all of our horses and trained them. Larry Ammons is our very close family friend that is partners with us on the horses. Together Larry, Steve and I are A&M Performance horses (Ammons & McDonald). I owe everything to my family for keeping me on awesome horses, taking me to so many shows, and being so supportive.” Mary’s success in barrel racing is in large part due to her superstar 11-year old horse Perculatin, (Latte). Mary won the 8th and 10th go rounds and placed in two other rounds at last year’s NFR. “My largest win in 2015 was the Calgary Stampede.” The duo won $10,800 in multiple rounds in the Canadian rodeo. “I will be taking a 5 year old sorrel gelding, A Frosty Please, (Bojangles) as a back-up horse for the WNFR.” Her horse Latte fell on her while barrel racing four years ago at a rodeo in Crosby, TX. The fall resulted in Mary breaking her pelvis, hip, toes and fracturing two vertebrae causing her to be in a wheel chair for four months. She fought her way back to win the 2012 World Championship. Sherry is the veteran barrel racer with 18 NFR qualifications to her credit and four World titles: 1995, 1999, 2010, 2013. Sherry’s husband, PRCA Team Roper Cory Petska (married Sept. 2014) will be back in Vegas going in ranked 10th. Sherry is the daughter of Mel and Wendy Potter. The Potter family is part owner of Ocean Spray Cranberries Inc. Sherry holds the record for all-time money won in the WPRA. “I will ride Stingray and Trip duPerier’s horse Atlas at the WNFR. It is such an exciting time for the contestants. I have been around a long time and it is exciting to see the growth in the sport. I want to win as much money as possible and am excited to be going back. 58 yrs old Nancy and Fuzz are the Rodeo Houston champions for the past two years. She won the Houston Super Series for $50,000 plus $5,900 in the first three go rounds and the semi-finals. Nancy also won money at Redding, CA, Preston, ID, Great Falls, ID, Spanish Fork, UT and Pleasant Grove, UT in 2015. “My husband, Fred and I said if we ever make it to the finals, it would be on our terms. Their terms were only hauling to 26 rodeos. Fred trained Fuzz and turned him into a barrel racing machine. I am a lucky girl to have Fred and Fuzz who is now 15 years old.” The duo placed in four rounds at last year’s NFR and ended the season ranked 9th with earning of $136,777. 33 yrs old Collinsville, TX $131,471 80 rodeos World titles: 1 2015, Wrangler NFR qualifications: 7 (199598, 2013-15) Main Ride: Babyflo At age 13, Fallon qualified for her first NFR in 1995. Flowers and Money and Dr. Nick Bar helped Fallon qualify for four consecutive NFRs. This pair produced Flos Heiress, (Babyflo) who is now 9 years old and will be accompanied to Las Vegas by her full 11 year old sister, Flos Nick Nack. “Our breeding/training program keeps me motivated. I have just always won on Dr Nick Bar horses.” Fallon stalls her horses at the Thomas & Mack facility saving valuable driving time over the ten day WNFR period. “Just take it all in...much like a wedding day. I was on the bubble (for making the NFR) and when I won, that secured my spot for the Finals. My parents Ray and Pam Kruse and brother Casey Cash will be helping me take care of my three horses at the finals; JKR Assured Win, (JJ), Guys Dashing Girl, (Ellie) owned by Pam and Craig Nelson and Dash To Tim. JJ was trained by Brenda Marsh and is 14 years old. I’m most excited about having my first grand entry. Everyone has told me that running down the alley at the Thomas & Mack is unreal and will almost brings tears to your eyes. My biggest worry is that I will not be where I am suppose to be during the NFR. . Wrangler NFR qualifications: 2 (2013 and 2015) Main Ride: Bo Taylor Jacob’s break-out rodeo was Ponoka, Alberta where she won 14K to make the top 15 for the first time in 2015. Taylor won first in four go rounds at the 2013 WNFR setting the arena record for the fastest time with a 13.37 that holds today. She has a degree in communications from Texas A&M University. Bo came from Angela Michaels' barn and Taylor believes her mother found the diamond-in-therough horse. Bo was trained by Marne Loosenort. “ I am not planning on changing my approach from when I made the finals in 2013. I think my horse does best when I go at it hard each and every night. He is not a horse that you can try to play it “safe” on.” Wrangler NFR qualifications: 1 Main Ride: Radio “After a good winter run, I was around the top 20 until I was blessed with another great Fourth of July that put me in the top 15 and things kept going well from there.” Carley depends on two horses; Doda Flit (Radio, age 11) and Fashionable Boy (Boy, age-14). Big wins on both horses kept her in the standings; Pueblo, CO, Lawton, OK, Kennewick, WA, Ellensburg, WA, Sheridan, WY and Greeley, CO. Her dad Jim Richardson and Kelly Garrison will be taking care of horses while Mom, Marsha and sisters Kendra, Kaily and Sarah will be there to cheer Carley on. “People don’t realize how much an encouraging text or message on Facebook can mean to you. Michele has a degree from the Fire Academy in California, where she wanted to be a firefighter until she started a family. Daughter, Katelyn McLeod finished 25th in world standings just $12,000 shy of making the NFR alongside her mother. “I'm so excited to be running at so much money each night this year at the NFR! It's such an incredible opportunity and I'm so blessed to be able to do what I love.” Wrangler NFR qualifications: 1 (2015) Main Ride: Baby J The youngest of the top 15 barrel racers, Jackie Ganter and Vickie Carter will battle it out for the Rookie title. “I will take four horses to the finals; Blazin Baby J, age-6, Guys French Jet, age-11, Cartels Fame age-7 and Roxy Dual, age-11.” All horses are owned by Jackie’s mom, Angela Ganter except for Roxy who is owned by Dufor Quarter Horses. Angela and Jan Burns will help me take care of the horses at the WNFR. “My most special and largest win ($5,268) for the 2015 season was Wainwright Stampede in Wainwright, Alberta. I talk to my horses and give them a kiss on the nose before every run, I know they can’t understand me but it makes me feel better. Her run at the 2015 rookie title is a tale of great emotion. Her equine partner, Blazin Ta Fame, aka Blaze Man, belonged to Rachel Hendrix. Hendrix was just about to embark on her pro rodeo career, when she died of carbon monoxide poisoning in January 2014 at the age of 18. Vickie had been one of Rachel's mentors. Because a trip to the NFR was always one of Rachel's goals, the Hendrixs asked Vickie to take Blaze Man and make a run for the Finals. She didn’t disappoint them. Just two weeks prior to the NFR, Blaze Man underwent colic surgery. He is expected to have a full recovery but he will not be Vickie’s partner for her inaugural WNFR. Jana placed in five rounds at the 2014 Wrangler NFR to win $30,343. Jana competes on three horses; Ima Royal Design (Hammer age-8), Dashing Klee (Chick age 5) and UR One Famous Rebel (Rico age-6). Husband Breck and son Jim will help take care of the horses in Vegas. Jana and husband Breck Bean raise/train barrel racing, team roping and tiedown horses at Circle B Quarter Horses. I’m all about my horses and I’m always the one that takes care of my horses. During NFR week there are so many obligations that it is hard to relinquish some of that responsibility even if it is to my husband. It stresses me to not be hands on. Wrangler NFR qualifications: 5 1995, 1999, 2004, 2007-08 Main Ride: Scooter Deb is back at the WNFR after an eight year absence. She will be riding Docs Flashy (Scooter, age 10) and Royal Star Commander, age 8. Commander is owned by Jim and Ruth Haislip. Deb has captured the Canadian barrel racing title four times; 1995, 1996, 1998 and 2000 and had multiple CNFR average titles. Deb didn’t get going until the last thirty days of the 2015 season where she made enough money at Stephenville, TX to qualify for her sixth Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. Her big win for the season came in July at the Ogden, UT rodeo where she won $5,377.74. She will be the only Canadian qualifier. Jennifer Sharp & ima perky Calfee Crowned aQha Jr Barrel racing world Champions she was still in high school. “When I got her she was going really good. The JB Futurity last year was the first place that we placed well. At the BFA, she did really good. She kind of came into her own all at once.” In the preliminaries, Sharp nearly hit the first barrel and was the last qualifier for the finals. “It was going down and I reached down to set it back up,” she recalled. “We didn’t know if we were going to make the short round. It was kind of a ‘hold your breath until the very last minute.’” They posted a 16.058 to win the Finals and the World Championship, by 3/10ths. By Tanya Randall Montgomery, Texas, barrel horse trainer Jennifer Sharp has only made two trips to the AQHA World Show in Oklahoma City, but she’s made both of them count. She won the Senior Barrel Racing World Championship for Allene Tatom with Slick By Design. This year, Sharp topped the Junior Barrel Racing with Holly Calfee’s homebred 5-year-old mare Ima Perky Calfee (“Rockstar”). The daughter of the late leading barrel horse sire Dash For Perks out of the Easy Request mare, Ima Cecil, was two years in the making just to get her on this earth. She started her barrel racing career under the saddle of Calfee’s daughter Tammy. “I started riding her in June of her futurity year,” said Sharp, who has been riding barrel horses for Calfee since 2007 when “I knew with setting that barrel up I had a lot of time I could make up,” she said. “We were hoping that I was going to be fast, and I was really fast.” “Rockstar was the first horse out in the finals. After I ran her I had to sweat it out for quite a while.” Sharp had also qualified Calfee’s 4-yearold stallion KR Famous Tequilla (Dash Ta Fame out of Tequikillya, by Chicks Beduino) to the junior finals. D E C, 2 0 1 5 27 “I still had him to run at 13, so that kind of kept me calm,” she noted. “I was sitting first and second until Pete (Oen and Hip Swinging Gypsy). He was the very last runner and bumped me to third.” Next up for Sharp and Rockstar is the BFA World Championship Derby back in Oklahoma City. The mare will likely see more rodeo action next year as well. “I hauled her to three pro rodeos this past fall and she placed at all three,” Sharp said. “She had never been to a rodeo before. We plan on going with her a little bit more this spring. We think she’s going to handle it very well.” Sharp wanted to thank her extremely supportive owner, Calfee, for “allowing me to ride these great horses” and her husband, Robbie, “for dealing with all of us, hauling us and working with the barrel horses. I definitely couldn’t do it without him.” Junior Barrel Racing Finals 1 Ima Perky Calfee, Jennifer Sharp, Holly Calfee, 16.058 10 br. m. Tracy comes from one of the most wellknown rodeo family’s in eastern Oklahoma. Her older brother, Terry Postrach, Jr. has 3 IPRA World Champion TieDown Roping titles to his credit and as many IFR average wins as well. Nowlin, 44, has competed in rodeo her entire life. When asked how she stays motivated to keep going down the road year after year, she simply replies, “It’s all I’ve ever done. Horses are my escape, I can be having a really bad day and get on a horse and just go off by myself and everything is better.” Tracy has jockeyed four different horses to the International Finals Rodeo. Her first finals came when she was just 13years-old aboard a gelding she called Goose. She and Goose made 4 trips to the IFR together; he was 21-years-old at his final one. The next horse in the string was a gelding named Rambo. He was not only Tracy’s barrel horse; Terry also used him as a tiedown horse as well. “I remember one time at Jasper, AR, Terry and I both rode him that night. He won the tie-down roping and I won the barrels. He was a good horse and I made the IFR 3 times on him.” The third horse Tracy piloted to the IFR was a 6-year-old mare named Dusty Rose. “Dusty and I made 6 trips to the IFR to- gether,” said Tracy. “Her breeding goes back to a mare my dad bought years ago for $100. She was an Oklahoma Star bred mare. We kept 3 colts out of her and one of them was Dusty’s mother. Both my brother and I made the IFR on one of these colts.” “Dusty and I went to 6 IFR’s together,” said Tracy. “Right now I’m trying to decide on a stud to breed her to. I’m hoping to get a colt that will make a tie-down horse for my son Ty. He’s almost 16 and loves to rope. He has big expectations of himself. He’s at the point that he’s putting in the time and effort. He just needs to enter more and learn to control his mind so he can win.” The mare Tracy will be making her 14th IFR on is a 9-year-old named Dolly Jo. “I bought her off of Facebook for $1,850,” said Tracy. “A man at Welch, OK had her and he told me she was a tie-down horse. That’s why I went to look at her, I thought maybe she would make a good horse for Ty.” “He didn’t have any roping cattle so he let me take her home to try. We took her home and ran some calves and found out she stopped on her front end so that wasn’t going to work,” said Tracy. “He’d also said she had been around the barrels so I went around them a few times but wasn’t really impressed. She turned her head and swung her butt around the barrel. I showed her a few things and then put her up. I told my mom I didn’t think I was going to buy her, but that night when I was lying in bed I just had something nagging at me about her.“ “The next morning I got up and went out photo by Way Out West Rodeo Photography By Tammie Hiatt and rode her again,” said Tracy. “I took her around the barrels again and the things I had shown her the day before she remembered. I went and got mom and dad and told them they needed to come watch her go. I decided I needed to buy her.” “God truly sent Dolly Jo to me,” said Tracy. “I rode her a month and took her to her first jackpot, she ran a second and a half off. The next weekend she won the 2D.” “I bought my IPRA card in May and entered Southwest City, MO and won it. I’ve taken her to 18 rodeos and she won 9 of them,” said Tracy. “She does everything so naturally. She just works, you don’t kick her; you just sit there.” “She’s only 14.2 hands tall if she’s standing on her tip toes,” laughed Tracy. “I’ve always ridden more cow bred or foundation bred horses that have been push style and she’s a free running thoroughbred. I never thought I could ride a free running horse but sometimes God tells you there are things you can do.” Tracy recently competed in the IPRA Southern Region Finals in Ada, OK and made a clean sweep winning both rounds and the average. This win earned a spot at the National All-Region Finals held in Lexington, KY, November 20 & 21. Nowlin, a professional beader, plans to haul Ty to the rodeos next year and run Dolly at the bigger ones “We’ll see how it works for us,” said Tracy. Csabay finished out the season on top after wrapping it up in Edmonton at the Canadian Finals Rodeo. Little Miss Wicked, known around the barn as “Wicked” was her main mount all year, and for years past, and helped her achieve this lifelong goal of winning the highly prestigious title. “Wicked” is an 11-year-old sorrel mare that stands roughly 15.1 hands and is by Terribly Wicked and out of Like An Effort. Csabay raised and trained the mare and still owns her mother who has had 10 foals including “Wicked”. Csabay went to the futurities and derbies on “Wicked” and had success at those before switching her over to the rodeo world. thankfully this year was great and we hardly ever had to deal with much mud.” Going into Edmonton, Csabay had her game plan in mind and wanted to keep her mind clear and confident for the six rounds. “I have really worked on my mental game and I believe that has helped me out a bunch. ”Wicked” won at the futurity and derby level I think everyone needs to be more confident in themselves and their horses and they will before I switched her over to the rodeos. I went to a handful of rodeos on her when she see a big change in their performance. It has was 7 but didn’t do as well as I had hoped we definitely helped me and I owe a lot of it to would. I truly believe that it is 95% horse and 5% rider and all I have to do is stay on and stay out of her way. The win was a little sad, but yet heartwarming, because my dad won the all around championship back in 1970. He and my mom have passed away. I knew at that moment when I won that they were sitting up there smiling down with pride and great joy,” explained Csabay. Csabay won not only one but four very prestigious awards including Canadian Champion, Season Leader, Average Winner and Top Gun, which she was awarded due to winning the most money out of all the contestants at the CFR. In addition, “Wicked” was awarded Barrel Horse With The Most Heart. “This year has been a blessing and I am so blessed with such an amazing horse with such a big heart and a very supportive family, friends and sponsors. I wasn’t really sure what to expect. I went in there with ‘all or nothing’ and it paid off.” Dick grew up in a rodeo family. Her father, Ladd, rodeoed through high school and college and got his four kids—Carlee, the oldest, Rylee and twin sons, Kendall and Kylar—involved in the sport. “We are all really close in age, so it was really fun to be able to travel together every weekend,” she noted. The 19-year-old doesn’t frequent many of the big jackpots, but rather focuses her efforts in the rodeo arena. She and Red are the defending barrel racing champions for the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association’s Southwest Region. “I was always a roper in high school,” said the multiple-event hand. “I always had decent barrel horses, but I never really became a ‘barrel racer’ until me and this horse started him to college with me.” doing good in college.” Bred by Andy and Julie Dobson, Scooter, a tall, lanky 11-year-old gelding, is by leading barrel horse sire Designer Red out of Days Dashingbug, by Dashing Encounter. He was ridden by their daughter Courtney prior to being purchased by the Dick family. “We bought him as a 7-year-old. My dad had bought him for my sister to use in high school because her horse had coliced. She rode him for a year, her senior year, and after she graduated she went to college in Hawaii, so I got to ride him for two years and bring The pairing between Dick and Scooter was not an instant fit. “We struggled in high school,” she said of Red, whom she said reminds her of Secretariat – “he’s big goof ball who loves to eat.” “I never made it to nationals on him. We had a problem with our third barrel. A lot of it was my fault, I’m sure, but we had to switch some bits and switch some things around, but I finally clicked with him.” Dick said that Autumn Keller—her “barrel racing mom back home”— deserves a lot of credit and a huge thank you for helping her get with Red. She also wanted to thank Kathleen and Kellie Collier for all their help as well.
