All Aucklanders have a favourite island in the Hauraki Gulf – what’s yours? Waiheke, because when you arrive it’s like you’ve taken a step back in the pace of life. Island time definitely comes into play here. Great food and accommodation. You’ve worked on kids’ TV shows and even recorded children’s albums, so you obviously love kids – where do you take the young ones when you’re in Auckland? We’re traditionalists so for the little ones we have to go to Waiwera Hot Pools, which is only 45 minutes north of central Auckland. For my older ones, a stroll through the Otara Markets for some soul food and then up the Sky Tower to test their nerve on the seethrough floors! And what about the Mrs? We love having breakfast at one of the many wonderful cafés in Ponsonby. There’s an amazing theatre and music scene in Auckland now that so many of the big international shows and acts are coming to town. What’s the best concert you’ve ever been to in Auckland? Bob Marley, 1979, Western Springs, man! Any hidden gems you think people should check out in Auckland while they’re here for WICKED? There are lots of hidden natural gems where you don’t have to spend anything but time. Go visit a marae and take a trip back in time. Original furniture by Charles and Ray Eames, the iconic Oscar statuette, the first Barbie doll and images by the world’s greatest architectural photographer Julius Shulman are just some of the highlights in this wide-ranging show.
