costumes, witches levitating 30 feet
off the stage, or seeing the monkeys
flying over the audience. You might

WICKED tells the untold story of
the Witches of Oz. Long before
Dorothy dropped in, two other girls
meet in the Land of Oz. One, born
with emerald green skin, is smart,
fiery and misunderstood. The other
is beautiful, ambitious and very
popular. WICKED tells the story of
how these two unlikely friends grow
to become the Wicked Witch of the
West and Glinda the Good.

WICKED has played in London,
Germany, Japan and Australia
and has found the same success
wherever it goes. Now it’s finally in
New Zealand, and this is one show
you really don’t want to miss.

I would definitely take them up to
Auckland Museum for a slice of
Kiwiana and a stroll down to
Mission Bay for a picture postcard
moment by the water.
All Aucklanders have a favourite island
in the Hauraki Gulf – what’s yours?
Waiheke, because when you arrive it’s like
you’ve taken a step back in the pace of life.
Island time definitely comes into play here.
Great food and accommodation.
You’ve worked on kids’ TV shows and even
recorded children’s albums, so you obviously
love kids – where do you take the young ones
when you’re in Auckland?
We’re traditionalists so for the little ones we
have to go to Waiwera Hot Pools, which is
only 45 minutes north of central Auckland.
For my older ones, a stroll through the Otara
Markets for some soul food and then up the
Sky Tower to test their nerve on the seethrough floors!
And what about the Mrs?
We love having breakfast at one of the many
wonderful cafés in Ponsonby.
There’s an amazing theatre and music scene
in Auckland now that so many of the big
international shows and acts are coming to
town. What’s the best concert you’ve ever
been to in Auckland?
Bob Marley, 1979, Western Springs, man!
Any hidden gems you think people
should check out in Auckland while
they’re here for WICKED?
There are lots of hidden natural
gems where you don’t have to spend
anything but time. Go visit a marae
and take a trip back in time. Check out
Bethells and Piha beaches in west
Auckland – they’re also settings for
TV and films, from Hercules and
Xena to Sparticus and the Bridge to
Terabithia movie.

Fabulous food and wine
Do your taste buds a favour and make the
most of the amazing food and wine in
Auckland. Seafood might be our specialty,
but alongside Pacific-Rim delights you’ll find
incredible cuisine from around the world.
And if you want to order great views with
your meal, head to the Viaduct Harbour or
Wynyard Quarter and dine waterside. The
Britomart precinct has everything from
Vietnamese and Japanese to a dedicated
dessert restaurant.
Wine lovers are spoilt for choice with three
wine growing regions – Matakana to the
north, Kumeu in the west and beautiful
Waiheke Island – the ‘island of wine’. The
city fringe suburbs of Ponsonby, Mission
Bay and Parnell all offer great food, wine
and people watching or pick up fresh local
goodies at one of the weekend farmers’

Get out on the water with jet boating,
kayaking, fishing or sailing; you can even
help race an America’s Cup yacht – without
booking flights to San Fran. Make some
memories with a whale and dolphin
spotting safari.
The jewel of the Hauraki Gulf is Waiheke

groves, farm land and beaches – and it’s just

markets – Britomart and La Cigale French
market in Parnell are both handy if you’re
in the city centre.
And in Auckland a great cup of coffee is
never far, so start your day at a local café
or grab one to go and sip as you stroll.
Indulge - shopping and spas
The hubby will have to accept that in
Auckland, shopping is inevitable. Whether
you get your inspiration from New Zealand
Fashion Week or you simply want to treat
yourself, you’ll find a wealth of local and
international designer stores.
The Britomart precinct’s gorgeous
historical buildings are home to the
flagship stores of Trelise Cooper, Zambesi,
WORLD, Kate Sylvester and many more,
alongside top international labels from
Bobbi Brown and M.A.C. to Ted Walker.
Browse the boutiques in Parnell and
Ponsonby, pick up unique clothing and
art in quirky K’ Road, get the latest looks
in Newmarket or wander through High
Street and Vulcan Lane in the city centre.
For something super special, take a
customised shopping tour or spoil yourself
at a luxurious day spa before getting
dolled up for your big night out.
Auckland – TAmaki Makaurau
– the maiden desired by a hundred lovers. It’s a place where
big city style goes hand in hand with a stunning natural
playground. So get out there and play.
Extra helpings
Get a little something extra and go
exploring. Check out the wild west coast
surf beaches like Piha and Bethells, or the
huge cliff-top gannet colony at Muriwai.
Stretch your legs with a walk through the
native rainforest in the Waitakere or
Hunua Ranges.
Hop on the ferry to Devonport for a
Victorian high tea, take a segway
tour to the top of Mount Victoria for
fantastic views or wander through the
art galleries. Auckland Zoo is always a
favourite too, especially at feeding
After dark
Find a cosy corner in a sake bar, celebrate
with sangria, or try a boutique craft beer.
Dance into the wee hours – take your pick

tunes or the latest hits played loud on the
turntables. Catch a live local act or
