Awards and Acknowledgement Evening
My sincere thanks to all students, staff and parents for
your support of our annual Awards and Acknowledgement Evening held
last Friday night. I particularly thank all those who contributed to a very
significant occasion for the College, as we came together to celebrate as
a whole school community. Congratulations to all!
After a wonderful prayer and ‘Welcome to
Country’ with a mix of didgeridoo and classic
Brigidine symbols, the mood was set for an
enriching experience. The night was truly
blessed as Archbishop Mark Coleridge highlighted not only the importance of education, but also the wonderful place Brigidine
College holds within the rich and diverse
Catholic education community. Acknowledgements were also made of Jan Neumann,
former College Principal and Terry Creagh
our former College Board Chair who has
served with distinction for the past 13 years.

Message from the Principal (cont’d)
Graduation 2013
The Brigidine College Graduation Dinner, is set to be
held at the Brisbane Exhibition and Convention Centre
on Thursday 14 November 2013. Further details have
been provided to the Year 12 students and their families
this week. The dinner will be a wonderful opportunity to
warmly and formally wish our Year 12 Graduands every
success as they graduate from Brigidine.
Orchestra, choirs, dance
groups and a variety of
soloists, the prizes for academic, cultural, sporting
and service endeavours
were richly celebrated.
I would particularly like to
thank the many teachers,
students, conductors and
assistants who worked
so professionally on the
evening. With meticulous
attention to detail, all
guests and participants
alike were wonderfully proud of the girls and their
accomplishments. A special thank you to Mrs Merryl
Wheaton for her expert organisation and support to the
many people involved in producing such a fine event.
I have today received the following email message from
Mr Stephen Walsh, Deputy Board Chair regarding the
evening:
Principal Notes:
Staff Changes
Over recent days, there have been some changes to the
College staff due to health and changing circumstances.
Ms Sarah Daff has decided to continue her work in Ghana
for the foreseeable future and has decided not to return
to Brigidine. Mrs Jenifer Byrne will be continuing in the
role as Religious Education Coordinator.
Mr Peter Schlencker has needed to take leave for the
remainder of 2013 with his health a concern at this
stage. He hopes to return in 2014. Ms Ana Lucia Varela
will replace Mr Schlencker until the end of the year.
College Events
Parents, please look forward to the next few weeks as
we host a variety of community events. I hope to share
with you and your daughters at the Sports Breakfast
tomorrow, Friday 1 November and the Performing Arts
Showcase afternoon also on Friday 1 November.
A Naoimh Bhrid, gui Orainn.
Brendan Cahill
Principal
On behalf of the Board of the College, could you please
pass on our congratulations to all those who organised
or participated in the Awards and Acknowledgement
Evening? It was a wonderful evening that highlighted
many of the positive aspects of the College. In particular,
could you congratulate all the students who compered,
with great poise and assurance, the various segments?
I look forward to sharing many College events with all
students, their parents and families over the next few
weeks. Please check the College calendar on the website
for details.

Andrew Beiers
Humility does not mean that we put ourselves down. Humility comes from the
Latin word ‘humus’ which means “close to
the earth”. People who live close to the
earth are more grounded, earthy and open
to transformation through a life of service
and justice. Christian humility is about
honouring others by sharing our gifts and
talents, enabling them to benefit together
in community.

Student Achievements
It was wonderful to celebrate
the achievements of all students at last week’s Awards
and Acknowledgement Evening. It is pleasing to talk to
many students who set themselves the goal of achieving at
a level of academic excellence
or outstanding academic performance.
The academic awards are based on the evidence provided from all assessment items completed from Term 1 to
Term 3. To achieve academic excellence students must
demonstrate that they are achieving at an A level across
the majority of their subjects at the end of Term 3. Students who received awards for outstanding academic
performance have achieved at an A level in all subjects
they study, as well as demonstrating a very high level of
application and conduct.
It was also pleasing this week on Assembly to see so
many students from Years 8 to 12 acknowledged for
achieving outstanding results in state and national competitions for Mathematics, Chemistry and French. It
certainly highlights that many of our students are capable of setting goals for themselves and excelling in their
learning.
Congratulations to all award winners.
2014 Subjects
All students and parents from Years 8 to 10 were emailed
a confirmation of their subject allocations this week. If
there are still any concerns about subjects, please contact me next week. Every effort has been made to ensure that the majority of students have been placed in
10
their preferred subjects. However, resourcing and timetabling restrictions mean that not all students are able
to be placed in all of their electives.
If any Year 11 students are considering making any
changes to their subject selections next year, they
should make an appointment with Mr Crawford to discuss their options and the process that they are required
to follow. While students can make an application to
make changes, we cannot guarantee any changes. All
applications will be considered once results are in and
the timetable is finalised. Students and parents will be
notified by email if the change can be approved.
Year 12 Exams
Students and parents were notified by email this week
of the Term 4 Exam Timetable. With less than a week of
formal lessons left this year, students should be making
good progress and organising themselves to complete
their final assessment items.
QTAC
I would encourage your daughters to check their emails
regularly for updated information about QTAC, OPs and
the end of year results.
Mrs Madeleine Grimes has recently reminded students
about the importance of checking their preferences
carefully to ensure that they optimise their opportunities to access courses.
QTAC also regularly sends updates about changes to
courses. Students will be notified about any changes by
email.

Awards and
Acknowledgement Evening
Firstly, I would like to congratulate the students and, particularly, the award winners and performers for their contributions
to the Awards and Acknowledgement Evening last Friday.
This was a wonderful celebration of the many talented girls
that we have at Brigidine, publicly recognising them for
their outstanding efforts.
Leadership Program
The Year 11 students have been undergoing a leadership program these last two terms and this has culminated with the announcement last week of our College
Captains for 2014. This week it is my pleasure to inform
you of those students who will be House Prefects next
year. A full list of student leaders including the cocurricular captains for 2014 will be announced next week.

Following the Graduation Mass, the Year 12 students
and their parents are invited to attend the Graduation
Dinner being held at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.
We ask that parents
arrive by 6.30pm
as we seat parents
first and begin the
evening officially
at 7pm. At the dinner, students will sit
with their parent/s
in tables of approximately 10 people.
Final Assembly
Friday 15 November signifies the
final day of school
for our Year 12 students and their final Assembly. This is
a day for the Year 12s to celebrate with students of the
College and we do not invite or encourage parents to
attend this morning. As our student body currently fills
the hall, we also do not have the space to accommodate
parents at this event and we ask you to respect this.
Graduation Mass and Dinner
As the Year 12 students approach their final days of lessons at school we come to some of the most exciting
and memorable events of their schooling. On Thursday
14 November the Graduation Mass and Dinner will be
held as we celebrate this ‘rite of passage’. An email will
be sent to parents this week with the details of costs,
venue and other particulars for our Year 12 students’
final few days at Brigidine College.
The Graduation Mass will be held in the Kildare Hall at
5pm where family members are all invited to attend.
The students will need to be dressed in their full College
uniform (including blazers) for the entire evening.
Fortiter et Suaviter
I would like to take this opportunity to wish our graduating Year 12 students the very best for their future. I
hope that they continue to keep in touch with one another and that they remain strong and gentle women
throughout their lives.

Author Visit
On Monday 28 October, the Year 9 English
students were lucky enough to be visited
by author Alice Pung. Alice has written
books including Unpolished Gem and Her
Father’s Daughter. She also edited the
Growing Up Asian in Australia collection
of memoirs.
She enlightened us with equally humorous and humbling stories about her heritage and the challenges she faced growing
up.
Alice conducted a writing workshop for
English Extension students in which we
were taught to write dialogues and look
for stories in our everyday lives.
Overall, Alice’s reflections on her unique
experiences left us inspired and ready to
reflect on our own experiences.

French Excursion Report
Last Thursday evening a group of Year 9 and 10 French students were
lucky enough to dine at Le Classic French restaurant with Ms Bull and Mrs
McNaughton. We were joined by French students from St Joseph’s College, Gregory Terrace and enjoyed a selection of traditional French dishes,
including Canard à la orange and escargots (snails) in a parsley sauce.
Fabulous entertainment was provided by the musicians who played a
variety of traditional French music on the piano accordion, violin (played
by the owner’s wife) and ukulele.
Everybody had a great time and enjoyed practising their French skills
with the French-speaking waiters and Terrace boys and playing baby-foot
(foosball). Thank you Ms Bull for organising the event.

Women in Public
Affairs
This year, both Hayley
Fancourt 12 CH3 and
Shaylee Rafter 12 CH1
entered this competition which is based on
a student’s knowledge
of the role of women
in society and on her
extensive community service. Both students
wrote substantial submissions and impressed
the judges.
Shaylee was selected as the nominee for the
Zonta Club of Brisbane Metro Breakfast in recognition of her generous contributions to the
Diabetes Association and fundraising for the
Leukaemia Foundation. She has travelled widely, promoting the issues relating to diabetes, especially in Canberra where she attended a conference and spoke to members of Parliament.
The judges commented on her dedication to
volunteering beyond her school activities.
Shaylee will receive a substantial award from
this Zonta Club next Wednesday morning at
their Club Breakfast.
Reunion Class of 1988
Gina Brosnan
Debating and Public Speaking
Coordinator
Last Saturday night, the Seniors of 1988 held their reunion and discussed old times. Organisers Katrina King (née
Tormey) and Kerri Hruza ensured that a great night was
had by all. Past Deputy Principals Margo Walters and Ian
White and I were impressed with the careers and even
multiple careers our past students have followed. It may
be 25 years down the track but, on the night, the years
melted away as everyone mingled and discussed the good
old days. Some did comment though, that it was a little
odd using first names for their teachers! They are already
planning their 30th in October 2018, beginning with a tour
of the College.
This was the second major reunion this year. Yet another will be held on Saturday 23 November for the Class of
1993, who are celebrating their 20th anniversary. See the
details on the previous page.
These reunions are a clear indicator of the significant part
that Brigidine has played in the lives of so many people.

S-Troupe welcomes Brigidine to Last week the College had four girls
competing in the Queensland State
their Theatre Community
All Schools’ Championships.
On 27 October, seven Year 12 Drama
students, accompanied by Miss Ryan
and Ms Flook, ventured to Ipswich to
observe and participate in the action
of S-Troupe. This is a Community
Theatre organisation formed in 1992
under the umbrella of Ipswich Little
Theatre Society by Life Member Jan
Paterson and a group of interested helpers. It aims to
give people with disabilities the opportunity to learn and
perform theatre skills.
In the 14-15yrs 3000m Racewalk,
Clara Smith 10 CH3 (15 yrs) won
Gold, surpassing her previous State
Championship record. She will now
head to Townsville for the Australian All Schools’ Championships
where she will go head to head
against a fierce competitor from Victoria in an attempt
to win the National title.
We participated in a range of activities from The News
Room to skipping and the odd Spiderman Dance. Our task
was to analyse the workshop and gain a full understanding
of how drama can help build character, confidence and be
a great way for any person to express themselves.
All of the Brigidine girls had a completely unique, unforgettable and rewarding experience; it was agreed by all
that, if given the chance, we would definitely do it again.
Riane Ryan
Drama Teacher
In the same race, Mikaela Woodward 9 CH2 (14 yrs) was
placed second behind Clara, taking home the Silver medal. This is another fantastic result and Mikaela will now
decide if she will travel to Townsville for the Nationals,
to compete alongside Clara.
Also on the track but in the Sprint events, Sachini Godamunne 9 CH2 ran in the 100m, 200m and 400m, making
finals in both the 100m and 200m. Sachini scorched
down the track to run 12.94 and 26.3 seconds, finishing
a close 7th in both races and recording a new Personal
Best in the 200m.
In the field events, Phoebe de Glas 8 DP3 was our lone
representative. Phoebe amazingly continues to improve,
making both finals in the Shot Put and Discus and recording two new Personal Bests.

Phoebe threw 10.62m in the Shot Put and 30.32m in the
Discus, finishing 8th overall in both events. Whilst she
did not qualify for the All Schools’ Nationals, her performances did qualify her to compete at the U14 National
Junior Championships.
Brigidine College is very proud of these wonderful athletes and their results.
