sheer curtains

Once you hang up a pair of sheer
curtains, it’s easy to forget them.
After all, their greatest virtue —
they’re nearly transparent and allow
plenty of light in — renders them
practically invisible. But dress them
up a bit and they can enliven an entire
room.
Inexpensive and easy to find,
store-bought sheers will save you precious time and money by serving as
the canvas for your creative additions. And what a relief: Starting with
ready-made curtains means you don’t
have to be a whiz with a sewing machine.
Typically available in silk, linen or
cotton, sheer curtains come in a variety of colors and lengths at virtually
any home store. For these projects,
you’ll need sheers with hemmed
channels instead of tab tops.
Select some you like without a pattern (to let your decorations stand
out), then browse through the notions aisle of a crafts or sewing store
for inspiration. Pom-pom fringe, ribbon and more can be used to quickly
transform the sheers you’ve selected.
Look for colors and textures that
complement or offset the furniture
and artwork in a room.
Also consider using sheers in unexpected ways: to divide a room, say,
or to add color behind a French door.
Wherever you decide to give them a
try, they will be beautiful — and memorable.

table so someone doesn’t have to
move anything to put down a cup of
coffee or a glass of wine. Items can be
bulkier on a larger table.

Wednesday to mark the eighth
anniversary of her death and to revile
the woman who succeeded her as the
wife of Prince Charles.
Outside Kensington Palace,
Diana’s home after her divorce from
Charles, bouquets of roses, carnations
and lilies were placed on the fence by
her fans. There were messages from
Australia, Argentina and the United
States, and pictures of Diana from
every stage of her life.
Diana died in a car crash in Paris
on Aug. 31, 1997, along with boyfriend
Dodi Fayed and chauffeur Henri Paul.
The only survivor was Diana’s
bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones, who
was badly hurt.

The bathroom is supposed to be a
spa retreat, right? But chips on the
tub, stains in the sink and ugly tile
are less than luxurious.
So it comes down to a choice: refinish or replace.
If it were easy, the best option
would be to reglaze porcelain-enameled fixtures by re-firing them in an
oven. But such a large-scale operation would be too expensive for individual tubs and sinks.
A quick fix exists. Professionals
can recoat fixtures using a two-part
urethane finish, consisting of a resin
and catalyst. “The (urethane) coatings are glossy,” says Robert Jones,
owner of DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen, a refinisher in Roeland Park, Kan.
“But they reflect light differently than
owner of Allen’s Specialty Coatings in Kansas City. Before,
professionals and do-it-yourselfers used more epoxy-based
products, which yellowed and
stained easily. “New coatings
work like the anti-graffiti coatings on buses,” he says.

Man breaks into

A 48-year-old homeless man

pleaded not guilty Monday to a
burglary charge, officials said.
David Hesterbey faces firstdegree burglary and petty theft
charges, officials with the Los
Angeles County district attorney’s office said in a statement.
He is being held on $70,000
bail.
Hesterbey allegedly vaulted
a 9-foot fence last week and entered the actress’ rented house
on the Pacific Coast Highway,
prosecutors said.
When an employee confronted Hesterbey, he became startled and fled the house,
jumping a fence and running
toward the beach, sheriff’s officials said.
He was arrested later that
day by sheriff’s deputies who
found him walking along the
beach near Aniston’s home.
The actress was not at home at

marijuana cigarette was allegedly found in the ashtray of his
car, state police said.

Country singer
back in jail
Country music singer Mindy
McCready is accused of violating her probation on a drug
conviction, authorities said.
A spokeswoman for the Pinellas County sheriff’s department in Nashville, Tenn., said
McCready was jailed Friday on
an arrest warrant issued earlier
this month.
According to the warrant,
McCready left Tennessee without getting permission from
her probation officer and
didn’t report to the officer during July. Authorities said it is
McCready’s second probation
violation, which means she
cannot post bail this time and
likely will have to serve time in
jail.
The probation violations
stem from charges brought
against the singer last year,
when she pleaded guilty to
fraudulently obtaining the painkiller OxyContin. She was fined
$4,000, sentenced to three
years of supervised probation
and ordered to perform 200
hours of community service.

The living room rarely lives
up to its name. Unless one resides in a studio apartment, it
is a room not so much for dayto-day living as it is a backdrop, the place we gather to
take pre-prom and holiday
greeting card snapshots.
Usurped as an activity center
by the den, the family, recreation and rumpus rooms, the
ubiquitous great room (the
kitchen-dining-TV and babywatching space) and, of
course, the 21st century home
theater, the living room had become something of a dead
zone.
But reports of the living
room’s outright demise have
been greatly exaggerated. With
interest in home decorating
now exceeding the boom experienced in the 1950s — the last
heyday of the living room — it
is conspicuously poised for a
creative rebirth. Other utilitarian public areas of the home
have seen upgrades. Kitchens
have morphed into gourmet
laboratories; lavatories into
small-scale spas; patios have
been rechristened outdoor living rooms.
Now, like a neglected child,
the living room is calling out
for attention: Dress me up, it
seems to be saying, and show
me off; I’ll make you so proud.
Get ready for the new living
room — perhaps it should be
called the lifestyle room — a
space, positioned within eyeshot of our front door, that will
not only reflect our increasingly sophisticated tastes in design but also our ability to
express ourselves better than
the Joneses.
The shift will be more than
merely cosmetic. In addition to

reconsidering the living room
as a design centerpiece of the
home, there appears to be a
more subtle, emotional repositioning. The living room has
spent the past generation either ignored as a museum
piece or surrendered, both
geographically and aesthetically, to the kids as another playroom. Parenting homeowners
are now beginning to understand what single people and
empty-nesters enjoy about the
living room, that it is a designated grown-ups’ domain, the
place for adult pursuits such as
entertaining and conversation.
“In the time-honored sense,
the living room is a room that
is off-limits, a place for entertaining guests or showing off to
neighbors,” says Mark McMenamin, senior editor of the industry publication InFurniture.
“The casual design approach of
the ’90s, which led to the great
room, meant fewer clearly defined formal spaces, but in the
past few years, as homes have
become larger, the idea of a
showplace living room has
come back into vogue.”
Showplace, not showroom.
The new living room is not envisioned as a finely furnished
no-kids-land, but a comfort
zone between the sometimes
disparate needs of adult formality and kid-friendly casual.
As such, it is likely to incorporate design ideas that stress
comfort and durability as well
as refinement and glamour.
“Minimalism has been
brought to the masses and although it is easy to care for
when you have children, people are returning to more
grown-up luxury,” says Los Angeles interior designer A.J. Bernard.
“The overriding term you
hear these days is that people
want stuff that looks homey.
That can translate into anything from shawls over
couches to ball-and-claw-foot
furniture, but it is usually
something that hearkens back
to a more romantic memory,
such as the house they grew
up in or the grandmother’s
house they visited.”
McMenamin sees this return
to older, more delicate styles
as a natural evolution.
“The resurgence of classical
design could very well be a reaction to all the chrome and
white leather we’ve seen,
which leaves a lot of people
cold,” he adds. “It’s a lot easier
to create a showplace with traditional style, which lends itself to excess, than with
modern, which tends to be lean
and uncluttered.”
This is nothing new for some
folks. My folks, for instance.
Raising three kids in the postwar Midwest, they have always
maintained a church-and-state
separation between the living
room and den, where there is a
television and a sofa suitable
for napping. Though their nest
has long been empty, its classically organized layout remains
the same.
My parents are members of
the generation that knows the
word “parlor” without an antecedent such as “beauty” or “ice
cream.” For them it was already an old-fashioned domestic term for the room
decorated with the family’s finest furniture and reserved for
entertaining callers.
Whether the new living room
is furnished for fashion or function, the rules of propriety for
those who use it are now as relaxed as a down-cushioned
easy chair. Though the living
room still exerts a certain authority as the place where nesters put their best design foot
forward, the “no kids, no pets,
no climbing, no eating, no
watching TV in here” dictates
that once defined the space are
no longer gospel.
New ‘Z’ mowers are
a lawn owner’s dream

The ultimate Sisyphean
household chore may well be
mowing the grass. Yet Americans remain obsessed with the
perfect lawn.
Marry that quest with our
fascination with clever gadgets
and ingenious technology, and
the appeal of something called
the zero-turn-radius mower becomes clear:
Work seems to turn into
play, exertion into recreation. If
time has supplanted money as
the currency of the day, this is
one mower zipping along with
the Zeitgeist.
With his old Honda lawn
tractor, it used to take Dave LaRocque three hours to cut his
half-acre of grass in Penllyn,
Pa. And it took an additional
hour for the trim work around
the trees and flower beds with
a walk-behind mower.
These days, he does the job
in half the time with his zeroturn-radius mower, also known
as a ZTR or simply a “Z.”
“You can go down a strip,
turn around, and go right back.
And you can get a lot closer to
shrubs and beds,” says LaRocque, 72, a retired insurance-underwriting manager. “I actually
look forward to getting out and
cutting the grass.”
Once used exclusively by
commercial gardeners and
landscapers, ZTRs now are all
the rage among weekend yard
jockeys. An array of manufacturers are making gasolinepowered models designed for
consumers, and as prices have
tumbled — $2,500 will buy a
basic machine, $5,000 can get
you a top-of-the-line residential
model — sales have soared.
“It’s the fastest-growing segment in our industry,” says
Greg Weekes, group marketing
manager for John Deere riding
lawn equipment.
According to the Outdoor
Power Equipment Institute,
consumer ZTR mower shipments are up over 75 percent
as of May 2005 versus the same
period in 2004. James McNew,
vice president of technical and
marketing services, declined to
specify how many mowers that
represents.

few decades ago. “The finish
was just worn off,” she says. “It
came from years of cleaning it.”
Another option for tubs involves covering them with
quarter-inch-thick acrylic,
which can cost about $1,000.
Tile costs about $400 to refinish because it includes the
tub — otherwise, the acid used
to strip the tile would ruin a
perfectly good bathtub. It
could cost less to replace, depending on the price of tile.
Coating tile also has a big
downside: Because it’s sprayed
on, the color fills in the grout
lines. So unless you use white
or ivory coatings, the tile could
look odd. Brian Bradley of Leawood, Kan., who owns singlefamily rental homes, had fixtures refinished in several
properties, including his own
home. “I’ve had pink tile painted white,” he says. “It worked
well.”
Laminate countertops cost
about $500 to refinish on average; replacements start at
$1,000. Professionals often use
a speckled paint to give bathroom and kitchen countertops
a look of a solid surface or granite. But the coating lacks the
depth of those finishes and
won’t last as long. Most coatings have a life span of eight
to 10 years.

The first commercial models,
distinguished by twin-lever
steering and an out-front mowing deck, were developed in
the mid-1960s. They are so
named because they can pivot
in place and spin on a dime,
thanks to separate hydraulic
motors or transmissions on the
rear wheels that enable the
wheels to move forward or
backward independently.
“They’re highly maneuverable and efficient,” says Toro
spokesman Mike Ferrara. “You
just whip around trees. You
don’t have to make multiple
passes or use a weed whacker.
It’s safer because you have
great visibility, and it’s fun.”
No doubt about that. Piloting
a Z is like riding a Tilt-a-Whirl
and mowing the lawn at the
same time.

linen trim: Cut a strip of linen
equal to the width of the curtains plus 1 inch, and double
the height of the top hemmed
channel plus 1 inch. Fold in all
edges 1 ⁄ 2 inch; iron. Fold in half
lengthwise; iron. Sandwich the
strip over the curtain’s channel; pin in place, and stitch.
2. To create a flounce, fold
down the top edge of the curtain about 14 inches; iron. Sew
hook rings across the fold,
about 6 inches apart.
3. Add the bottom linen panel: Cut linen to the width of the
sheer plus 2 inches, and the
height from the windowsill to
the floor plus 4 inches. Fold 1 ⁄ 2
inch along top edge; iron. Pin
the folded edge to the sheer,
centering the linen panel to
leave 1 inch on each side;
stitch in place.
Fold side edges in 1 ⁄ 2 inch,
then 1 ⁄ 2 inch again; iron, and
stitch in place. Fold bottom
edge up 1 ⁄ 2 inch, then 3 inches;
iron, pin and stitch in place.

pay $50 to have the last steps
of work professionally done.
The work entails removing the
tape with a razor blade two
days after the coating is applied. Using 1500-grit sandpaper on a wet surface, rough
areas should be buffed out. A
conditioner is added.
The complete curing time for
a recoated surface is 30 days,
meaning it should not be
cleaned until then. Allen suggests using a high-quality car
wax once after the curing period because it aids future cleaning.
Professional refinishers offer
more than 100 colors, but people commonly choose white or
ivory. Most professionals guarantee coatings for five years. In
the last decade, Bradley says
most coatings in his houses
have endured. However, one
tub peeled after shampoo pooled on top of it for months.

1. Measure the length of a
curtain. Cut two strips of pompom fringe (one for each edge)
to the same length.
2. Pin fringe to the back of
each edge of the curtain.
3. Stitch the fringe to the curtain edges by sewing along the
outer edge of the trim and then
along the inner edge. Alternatively, affix the trim using fabric glue.

‘The Closer’ closes
its first season
“The Closer” wraps up its first season
Monday, and shows why it’s TNT’s highestrated original series.
First, the writers haven’t forgotten that
good police shows leave their clues out in
the open, just waiting for viewers to put
them together. Second, the show has given
us a hero who puts those clues together better than we can: Los Angeles Deputy Police
Chief Brenda Johnson (Kyra Sedgwick).
Brenda, the top character in “The Closer,”
remains a brilliant Sherlock Holmes.
Brenda’s brilliant and focused even when
she’s faced with career problems, which
reach a climax in the season finale. The
70-minute episode begins at 8 p.m.
Sedgwick is amazing as she makes Brenda someone we must root for, because of
her strengths and despite — or maybe because of — her faults.
She makes you feel every tug of Brenda’s
emotions in Monday’s strong story. After
someone files a complaint against her, the
usually blunt Brenda must decide whether
to practice honesty or diplomacy. Her decision could shape her career — provided she
still has one.
It’s easy to relate with Brenda and to admire her. Sedgwick has developed a character determined to discover the truth, and
Brenda has some nice personality quirks,
such as her unusual sense of humor and her
passion for chocolate and sweets.
Sedgwick is surrounded by an experienced, talented cast, including police show
veteran J.K. Simmons ( “Law & Order” and
“Oz”) as Assistant Police Chief Will Pope,
Brenda’s boss. Pope has a knack for the perfect frown, something he did so well when
he played Editor J. Jonah Jameson in the
“Spider-Man” movies.
“MASH” and “Police Academy” alumnus
G.W. Bailey brings his usual flair and wit as
he plays Detective Lt. Provenza. Bailey obviously is having fun with this character. It’s
fun to watch him, Sedgwick, Pope and the
others in this large cast have this much fun
on a show this good.
