DeMotte Christian School Eagle’s Eye May, 2016 Graduation Issue Graduating Class Motto: "Each one should test his own actions…without comparing himself to somebody else, for each one should carry his own load.” Galatians 6:4, 5 Graduation – May 26, 2016 @ 7:00 p.m. Parting Words from the Principal “Each one should test his own actions….without comparing himself to somebody else, for each one should carry his own load.” - Galatians 6:4, 5 About this time last year our theme verse for the 2015-2016 school year was introduced at the end-of-the-year chapel. The graduating eighth graders chose the verse as their parting gift to our school. It has been the theme for our chapels and devotions this past year. God has again used it to teach and comfort us during the past year as students, staff, and families. Eighth graders, you have picked a verse that will be a challenging and wonderful parting gift to our school. I am looking forward to how our Lord will use this verse at DeMotte Christian School. It is my hope that you will use what you have learned over the past ten years about God, His son, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit to propel you in your lives. Galatians 6:4-5 speaks about the everyday walk with Christ and striving to do your best to live for Christ despite our sinful nature. I challenge and encourage you to do just that. It is important to reflect on your life and validate whether it is a life that is living for Christ or not. Many times, actions are results of what is valued or is considered important. If you strive to live for Christ daily, and veer away from temptation, then you should take pride in that. Eighth graders, take pride when you live for Christ. When there are times you identify areas in life where you are failing, then repent and lean on Christ for help. Like Paul stated to the Galatians, you should not be comparing where others are in their walk to feel good or bad about yourself. Your relationship with Christ is ultimately between you and Him and it takes work like any relationship does. As you go and experience the next step in your journey of life, remember to live for Christ. In all that you do, lean on the Lord and test your actions. You have received training at DeMotte Christian School. You have been prepared academically, socially, and spiritually to move on to the next segment of your lives as young adults in high school. Many of you have already made a solid commitment to God and have accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior through the work of the Holy Spirit. May you continue to grow in that relationship and be excited as you see Him actively working through you as you continue in your lives. If you have not made a firm commitment yet, I urge you to seriously consider what you have seen and heard, not only at DMCS, but also in your church and more importantly your home. A genuine relationship with Him will be a joy and comfort through for the rest of your lives on earth and also into all eternity. It’s been my honor to be your principal for the last two years and your teacher for one year in sixth grade. It has been a joy to watch you grow and mature to become young women and men. May you live for Christ in all that you do. To do that you must lean on Him and test your actions. So as you walk out of these doors one last time as students, remember that God is so good and so gracious. He will not leave you or forsake you. That is something we can take pride in. Mr. Devon K. Brinks, Principal DeMotte Christian School 2 Dedication We dedicate this issue of the EAGLE’S EYE to all our parents who love and support DeMotte Christian. I had plans for what I wanted to do after college, but God had different plans for me. And let me tell you, His plans were so much better! These past 2 years have been truly amazing at DMC. The students at DMC were such a blessing to work with. I’ve st nd loved teaching 1 & 2 grade and getting to know such unique children. th I’ve accepted a position teaching 4 grade at Sioux Falls Christian in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. While I am sad to leave, I am excited to be closer to my family. I’m so thankful for the faculty and staff here that have welcomed and supported me. They’ve been so helpful and loving. I can’t imagine having my first teaching job anywhere else. The students here are so amazing! DMC is truly blessed to have each and every one of them. I’m so thankful for the classes I’ve taught and the teams I’ve coached. They’ve helped me grow in so many ways and have brought me so much laughter and joy. “The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy.” Psalm 126:3. The Lord has done so many great things for me, including bringing me to DeMotte Christian. It is my prayer that He continues to do great things for each and every student that passes through DMC. Miss Kroese 3 God is a loving and gracious God. He has our best interests in mind, which I can attest to fully! As many of you know, I recently accepted a position to teach at a Christian school in Tokyo, Japan. It was not an easy decision to leave as I feel so comfortable and loved here. I am very thankful for the year God has given me at DMC. I have been shaped immensely by so many. I hope I have left a positive impact on the students as well. The faculty and staff here are truly top notch in every facet! They have welcomed me and allowed me to serve the students in the best way I know how. They love the Lord and truly want what is best for every student. Thank you faculty and staff for all your support! Thank you parents for your outpouring of support this year as well! Your kind words mean so much to me! Finally, I want to thank all the students for all your hard work in the classroom, in sports, and in PE. Your effort and dedication are much appreciated! Thank you as well for all the great memories we made together. I catch myself laughing often thinking about all the fun we had throughout the year! Students, remember to “Act justly and love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” God has a plan for each of your lives, so consider Romans 8:28, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.” Mr. Weaver “I promise every living creature that the earth and those living on it will never again be destroyed by a flood.” Genesis 9:11 Girls League Champs 2016! Your son or daughter has now reached a milestone in his or her life. As teachers, we have been instrumental in the lives of your child. You, however, have been and will continue to be the most important teacher your child will ever have. Continue to be the type of parent you want them to be someday. For some of you it is your first child graduating from DMC. For others it may be your second or third. For others it may be your last child to graduate. We request you continue to remember DeMotte Christian; the school that helped nurture your child during those important formative years. When your children leave DeMotte Christian School, the tie you once had with the school is broken. This means your family is growing up. Continue to remember all of us in your prayers and your financial responsibilities. Continue to return to visit us. How can we begin to thank the wonderful, dedicated teachers, coaches and staff that have been a daily Christian example to our girls over the last 10 years? What a privilege it has been for us to have such an excellent Christian school in our community and to have been able to nd experience it ourselves as well, from my mom being in the 2 graduating class, to us as parents walking down the same halls that our girls will be walking down as students for the last time. It has been a joy to see them blossom academically, athletically and spiritually, from reciting Luke 2 st in 1 Grade, their testimony of their faith through their Bible Journals in Junior High, to the celebration of their faith through the Junior High Choir Program. This school is an ongoing testimony of God’s community of faith and its impact by teaching our kids what it means to know that Christ is the center of all we do. The benefit = priceless. To God Be the Glory! Kent and Sharon Bierma While the Lord provides a variety of options in education for our children, having both been raised in Christian school, we were committed to giving our son the same experience. At the time when Danny began school, we chose Crown Point Christian, where we were blessed to be a part of a growing community. Two years ago, in a series of events only God could have orchestrated, we were brought to DeMotte Christian and were welcomed into a community making us thankful for the choice the Lord led us to! We are grateful to have dedicated Christian teachers, new friends for Danny to continue to grow with, and an education for him to take with him long after graduation. It has been a privilege to have joined the DMC community, though for a shorter time than others, we have found it to be a fun, loving, Christian family, willing to support each other in any situation! While we weren’t sure how God would use Danny’s love for basketball in a new school, what a two years it has been for him on a team who has challenged his abilities and coaches who found his strengths, teaching him how to use them on the court; all leading to two championship seasons! While there are sacrifices in giving a Christian education to our son, we wouldn’t change the rewarding experience he has received in his education. We look forward to him attending Covenant and continuing in his walk with our Savior! Tom and Jodi Bultema “This school is an ongoing testimony of God’s community of faith and its impact by teaching our kids what it means to know that Christ is the center of all we do.” We can hardly believe it’s time to say good bye to DeMotte Christian School. We have been blessed with having both of our children graduate from this school. We would like to thank the many teachers, administrators, staff, coaches, school board, and committee members that provided time, thought, and prayer into our kid’s education. Our community is fortunate to have DeMotte Christian Schools to educate our children. Looking back, we can remember talking about our kids going through DeMotte Christian when they were born. Now that our time here is complete, we are thankful God provided us with that opportunity. John and Jill Heerema Twenty years ago we dropped off our first of five children at DMC Preschool. One of the reasons we had moved to DeMotte was so that our children could attend DMC. Both Lori ('76) and her father ('51) had graduated from DMC, and we had desired that same Christian education for our children. Now as we reflect back on the last twenty years, we give thanks to God that He provided this school to our community and continues to bless it. We have appreciated the caring teachers and staff, and always knew that our children were being taught, in every subject, in the light of God's word. Everything our children learned at home and at church was also being reinforced at school. Priceless! Were there sacrifices made on our part? Most definitely! Has it all been worth it? Absolutely! God is good and we pray that He will continue to bless DMC for generations to come. Dennis and Lori Lins Drew has been attending DMC for the past 2 years. As a family we are grateful for the impact the teachers, administrators, friends, and staff have made in Drew’s life during his brief time spent at DMC. Drew will often come home and tell us how great hot lunch tasted or “interesting facts” of what he learned in Mr. Vander Molen’s Bible class. As parents we are often th reminded at times we are “not smarter than an 8 grader” at DMC. Significant memories include the role he played as Sebastian in the musical, band concerts, math competitions, the great treats his Mom made for the guys and girls on the championship basketball teams, and stopping at Taco Bell on the way home after most of the away games. At the end of the day it is hard for us to describe how grateful we are to everyone involved at DMC and the education and opportunities the school provides to all of their students. The value of his education is eternal, and no words can even come close to express our gratitude. We are so proud of you………Congratulations Drew! Dale and Shelley Nieuwbeerta Wow!! I can’t believe the time has arrived that our last child is graduating from DMC. When it was time for our first child to start school, we made the decision to send her to DMC knowing that it would be a long road of expense that we weren’t sure we would be able to afford. It truly has been amazing watching God always provide for those needs and have never regretted the decision. Having our children surrounded by God’s love at school as well as home is truly priceless. We are truly thankful for the Christian faculty and staff that have helped our children become who they are. We also enjoyed the many friendships made through the years for both our kids and us. We have many memories of DMC from all the different art projects I still have, to the plays, all the different sports and of course the science fair. Thank you DMC for staying strong in the Lord and keeping Christ at the center of the school and everything it does. May God continue to bless this school!! Tom and Jennifer VanderMeer 22 The 8th Grade Graduates ~ On March 26, 2002, early in the morning, Kelli and Rob Arnold welcomed their second child, Olivia Kate A. If you are wondering, that baby girl is me, and I was born at Porter County Hospital. My father is a police officer at the Lake County Police Department, and my mother is a nurse practitioner at the V.A. in Crown Point. I have a brother that is four years older than me, Nick. I am now 14 about to graduate 8th grade, and my brother, who is now 18 will be graduating high school this year. In my junior high years of DMC I have been involved in basketball all three years (6th, 7th, 8th), volleyball all two years (7th and 8th), track in 6th and 7th grade, and I ran cross country in 6th grade. I have only attended DMC since 5th grade, but the years I have been here have been very enjoyable! In 5th grade, I joined the Spell Bowl Team as well. In 6th and 8th grade I was involved in the musicals. As I graduate this year I will miss my friends and the great environment here at DMC. I will be attending Kankakee Valley High School next fall. I am happy to make new friends and memories, but I am also going to miss my friends and the memories that we all created here at DMC. I hope to be involved in many of the sports at Kankakee Valley High School such as volleyball, basketball, and tennis. I am hoping to be in BPA (Business Professionals of America) and National Juniors Honors Society. I have ideas of what I would like to do after high school: attending college and studying genetics (Genetic Engineering and Bioengineering), pharmacy, OB/GYN, anesthesiologist, or orthodontics. The class verse that was chosen for next year from our 8th grade class means a lot to me. I think that it is important that we do not compare ourselves to each other and to stay away from being jealous, or putting ourselves down because we want to be like someone else. I think that as children growing up we need to learn not to be jealous and to love ourselves the way God intended for us to do. I very much loved DMC and the people that were here to help me grow. I think that all the other students that attend here will say the same when they graduate. My name is Ashley Rose B. I was born along with a twin sister on November 17, 2001. I was born to Kent and Sharon Bierma. My dad works as a vice president of the bank and a commercial loan officer. My mom works with numbers at Dekock Farms, my grandpa’s farm. I have three siblings. I have a sister, whose name is Emily Bierma. Since she is my twin, she is the same age as me, which is fourteen. She is in eighth grade. Next, I have my two older sisters. They are both married and have adorable children. The first is Jennifer Fuqua. She is thirty-two years old. My other sister is Megan McMannus. She is twenty-nine years old. I’ve been involved in a lot of activities at DMC. I’ve been in band in 5th grade through 8th grade and have done ISSMA all three years. In 6th and 8th grade, I was a part of the musical. I’ve done basketball for all three years in junior high and volleyball for two. I only did track for one year, though. All these activities have made my junior high experience great. After I’m all done at DMC, though, I’ll be going to Covenant Christian High School to begin a new chapter in my school career. Our class verse is Galatians 6:4-5, which says “Each one should test their own actions… without comparing themselves to someone else, for each one should carry their own load.” This verse inspires me to do my best in everything and be happy with what I do. Sometimes, I find it hard to look at the things I’ve accomplished without thinking of the negatives that came along with it. This verse really encourages me to look on the bright side and not compare myself to anyone else. I’ve really enjoyed my time here at DMC. I can’t wait to see what the new chapter of my life will hold, though! 23 My name is Emily Ruth B. I was born on November 17, 2001, also known as the best day of the whole entire year. I am a daughter to Kent and Sharon Bierma, the best parents I could ask for. My mom, Sharon, works as an office manager for DeKock farms. My dad, Kent, gives out loans at DeMotte State Bank. I have three sisters, Ashley, Megan, and Jennifer. Ashley is my identical twin, so she is the same age as me. She is a great friend, and I love her a lot. She is really fun to hang around, and we share a lot of jokes together. Megan is my older sister. She is 29, married and has two children. Jennifer is my other older sister. She is 32, married and has three children. I love them both, too; I love my family a lot. I’ve participated in a lot of activities in DMC. I’ve done band for all the four years available and ISSMA three years, too. I’ve done basketball three years, volleyball two years, and track in 6th grade. I’ve participated in the 6th grade musical, The Music Man, and the 8th grade musical, The Little Mermaid. I enjoyed all these activities a lot, even though my schedule might have gotten a bit tight some weeks. I’m excited to go to high school at Covenant Christian High School, but I’ll miss the friends from 7th grade that I’ve made. They are really fun to talk to and are great friends! My advice for the 7th graders going into 8th grade is to always do your homework, don’t fall behind, have fun and make a lot of memories! 8th grade was really fun, but always getting ahead of things and getting your work done makes it better! Our class verse means a lot to me. I sometimes compare myself to different people, whether it be athletics or art. Sometimes I think that I’m not good at something, or that I won’t be as good as other people. Even though I might not be as good at something that other people are good at, I shouldn’t compare myself to other people but focus on being the best I can be! This verse lifts me up in that way. I plan on going to Covenant Christian High School. I want to be in volleyball all of the years available, and I want to be in the musical all years available as well. Those activities look like a lot of fun and I’m excited to participate in them! I can’t decide on what I want to become, but I either want to be an animator for Pixar or Disney, an astronomer, or a nurse. I’m excited to go to college and get a job, but I have a long way to go before I’m in college, so I don’t need to worry about it too much. I don’t really know what the Lord is leading me to do with my life, but I am excited to find out. I can’t wait to see what I will become, the successes or failures I will encounter. Leaving 8th grade and continuing on to a new chapter of life is really exciting, but also sad. I will miss the friends that are leaving for KV and the 7th grade friends I’ve made this year. Even though it will be somewhat sad leaving DMC, I’m excited to move on! On July 16, 2002, I was born to Tony T. and Lindsey Bos in El Paso, Texas. After my dad disliking every name my mom came up with, they decided on Ireland Elizabeth B. My dad owns a dairy in DeMotte called Bos Dairy, and my mom is a stay-at-home mom who is always running her four children around since we all participate in at least one sport per season. I am the oldest child of four, my younger sister, Skylar, is in 5th grade, and she is 11 years old. I also have two younger brothers, Gerrit and Tony, they are 8 years old and in second grade. I was in the musical in 6th and 8th grade, Music Man Junior and The Little Mermaid. I also participated in track and basketball all 3 years. In basketball, my team went undefeated in 6th grade, and we were tournament champions all three years. I also was in soccer in 7th and 8th grade. I am going to Covenant Christian High School next year, and I hope to play soccer there. Some advice I have for the 7th graders is remember we were all 6th graders at one point, and they are trying to figure everything out. Our class verse this year is Galatians 6:4-5, “Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else, for each one should carry their own load.” I like this verse because I shouldn’t compare myself to others and what they are doing because we all have different motives. Everything I do needs to be done for the glory of God and when I am done with what I am doing, I shouldn’t boast and be too full of pride, because everyone has different loads they need to carry. I don’t think that pride is a bad thing when you are taking pride in doing everything for God because we are God’s children. 24 My name is Leanna Sue B. I was born January 16, 2002, and my parents have been “blessed” with five lovely daughters including me. My oldest sister is Megan, and she is a sophomore in college at Bethel College. My second oldest sister is Renae, and she is a senior at CCHS. My sister Madelyn also goes to CCHS, but is a sophomore. Last but not least, there is my youngest sister Kate. She is in 5th grade and has a ton of energy! My parents are Rob and Wendy Buiter. My dad just recently started his own business called Fastrack Fertilizer, and my mom works part time in the store of Belstra Milling. I have enjoyed my years here at DMC participating in volleyball, basketball, track, band/ISSMA for 2 years, and 2 musicals. I will for sure miss the many memories made here at DMC and, of course, all the teachers! I encourage anybody who is thinking of coming here to not be nervous about having a hard time with teachers. They are all great, and it is always a fun atmosphere! For the 7th graders next year the advice I would give you is to stay on task with your work and have fun! If you always have negative thoughts about what you are doing it’s no fun, so enjoy yourself! The class verse we chose this year is Galatians 6:4-5 which says, each one should test their own actions...without comparing themselves to someone else, for each one should carry their own load. I like this verse, because it reminds me that I don’t need to be comparing myself to others. God loves me the way I am, and I shouldn’t need to prove that to anyone else. Next year I will be attending Covenant Christian High School. I hope to be involved in basketball, volleyball, and maybe softball or track. Other than that, I’m just going to wait and see what God has planned for me! Hello, my name is Allison Paige B. I was born on January 5, 2002. My mother is Jessica, she works as a stay-at-home mom, and my father, Kirk, works at Masterlink doing concrete work. I am the oldest of three children. Caden Edward is seven, and he is going to be finishing 1st grade, and Kailey Mae is the youngest of us all. She is five and is going to be finishing preschool. I have only been at DMC since 7th grade, and it has been wonderful. I played basketball in 7th grade and volleyball in both 7th and 8th grade. I also participated in the Little Mermaid Jr. musical as an under-the-sea creature and a lagoon creature. Our class verse that we chose is Galatians 6:4 ~ “Each one should test his own actions…without comparing themselves to someone else, for each of you should carry their own load”. I like this verse because it tells me that I need to not compare myself to others in things that I do, whether it's sports or school work or just hobbies I am good at. Now that I am graduating, I will be going to Covenant Christian High School. While I am there I hope to be involved in volleyball, and I also want to take art. I hope that the upcoming eighth graders are going to have a great year. My advice is that you get your homework done on time and always be prepared for class. Plus, have fun; it’s your last year with the people in your class that might be going to a different high school than you. Also, if you try and keep a positive attitude in school, you will have a great year! My name is Daniel John B. I was brought into this world on the 27th of October in 2001. My parent’s names are Tom and Jodi Bultema. My dad travels around the region and transports steel. My mom is a secretary at Terborg Distributing here in Demotte. I am an only child which causes times to be quiet--well, sometimes. We are a fun-loving family who is always looking to have a good time! I have gone to Demotte Christian School for two years. I attended Crown Point Christian for my first eight years of schooling. I transferred after my 6th grade year, and these have been a great two years! I have made many new friends, and I love the environment here. I feel that my two years here at DMC have helped me grow in faith as well, I have learned many new things that have helped me in the past couple of years. I participated in a few activities. I have been a part of the basketball team in 7th and 8th grade, and I also participated in track this spring. I also had a part in the musical this year. I will miss the teachers at DMC because they always have helped me in academics and in other events that have taken place. I am thankful for them and what they have taught me. This year’s class verse, Galatians 6:4-5, means a lot to me. It reminds me that I need to always do things to the best of my abilities. It also reminds me that I should not look at others and see what they have done or how much they have accomplished. I need to be content with where I am, and I need to work on myself spiritually. I will be attending Covenant Christian High School next year. I am really excited about that and am looking forward to making more friends. I am excited for playing basketball at Covenant next winter. I am very thankful for my time here at DMC, and I am looking forward to my next four years of schooling. 25 My name is Anthony James C. I was born on September 24, 2000, in Hobart. This is my first year in Demotte Christian School, and I love it. My mom’s name is Danielle Cresap, and my dad’s name is Tony Maldonado. My mom is a nurse and helps people to become healthy again. My dad works on cars so people won’t break down. Katlynn is my sister. She is 16 and is in 10th grade at Covenant. My brother Dakota is 14 and is in 8th grade at Kankakee Valley. My little brother Kevin is 8 and goes to DeMotte Christian. I have been involved in soccer, basketball, boys volleyball, and track. I will miss the lunches and the coaches. DMC is really hard, but the teachers push you to be the best you can. Do your work and study, be the best you can be. To the 7th graders who will become 8th graders this year, here are some things you need to know about 8th grade. First, always respect your teachers and classmates. Never do anything that will get you a detention. Second, treat others how you wanted to be treated. Third, do what you're told so you can be the student who shines the brightest. I am still deciding if I want to go to Kankakee Valley or Covenant. It’s a hard decision because there are many reasons why I want to go to Kankakee Valley or Covenant. Let the Lord lead your life; He will bring you to success. I think our class verse is good because it tells me to make my own decisions rather than letting someone else do it for me. When I do something well, I can take pride in myself after achieving a goal. On January 16, 2002, I was born in Visalia, CA. My name is Erica Williemina dJ. I have an older sister, Megan. She is 16 and currently attends Covenant Christian High School finishing her sophomore year. My younger brother, Joshua, is in 5th grade at DMC and is 11. At DMC I have enjoyed being involved in the almost undefeated girls basketball team. I participated in soccer and volleyball for one year each. I have also gone through two track seasons with both long distance and sprinting events. I have played flute in band all four years and have gotten gold in vocal and instrumental ISSMA all four years. In my 6th grade year I ran for Student Council and was elected in 7th grade. Throughout my JH years, I have been in both musicals: Amaryllis in Music Man Jr. and Flounder in The Little Mermaid Jr. My class verse reminds me never to judge others and to look at myself first. God’s opinion is the one that counts, and I don’t need to compare myself to others. I am very excited to be moving on to Covenant Christian High School next year. I am deciding whether or not I want to run for Student Council or if I want to play softball. I will be doing basketball and volleyball. I also would like to be involved in Covenant’s plays or musicals. I am most looking forward to new classes, a change in environment, and being able to go to the same school as my sister. On January 3, 2002, I was born at Porter Hospital. My parents named me Cassidy Cheyenne DY. My dad, Jason, is a general contractor. He owns his own company, Jason DeYoung Construction. He builds houses, pours concrete, and basically can do anything. My dad and I enjoy racing our tandem mountain bike together all over Indiana and Michigan. My mom, Candace, is an intensive care nurse at St. Anthony's. I have one brother, Tanner. He is 10 years old and is in 5th grade at DeMotte Christian. In 6th grade I played saxophone in band. I also was in The Music Man musical. I was a background character, and it was a lot of fun! In 7th grade I played on the volleyball team. In 8th grade I was in an ensemble for the Christmas concert. I enjoyed that more than I thought I would. I also was in The Little Mermaid musical. I played a seahorse which has one speaking line, I also played an under the sea creature and a chef. At DMC I will miss the hot lunches! Every day is something new and delicious. I will also miss a lot of my friends because they will be going to different schools. Our class verse, Galatians 6:4, means to me that I should do what I am comfortable with, without comparing myself to others. I will always find a flaw if I compare myself. I should not force others to hold me up and keep me satisfied. I shouldn’t make people support me, I should support myself and deal with my problems without making others suffer with me. I will be attending Covenant Christian High School, and I am very excited about this! After high school I hope to do something involving animals because when I’m with my animals I have the most fun. I am leaning towards training horses and boarding horses for a living. I enjoy being around my two horses, and I have trained one to neck rein. I might even have the opportunity to completely train some horses this summer. I feel that I can be me around animals. I am good at communicating with horses or really any animal, but not the greatest with people. I may even own a pet store or something. I don’t know, but I do know God will guide me, and He knows the right path for me. 26 My full name is Emily Joy E, and I was born on June 25, 2002, to Scott and Tia Eriks, who are my loving and supportive parents. My dad works at Van Drunen Farms in Momence where he is a millwright fabricator. My mom cares for busy families and the elderly by assisting and cleaning in households. My one and only sister, Elise, is a freshman at Covenant Christian High School where I will be attending. I have been attending DeMotte Christian School since fourth grade, and it has been an exciting four years. All of the classes are Christ-centered, and the teachers are very kind. Through Junior High at DeMotte Christian School I have been involved in many extracurricular activities. In sixth grade I was involved in basketball, the Music Man Junior musical, and band. In seventh and eighth grade I was involved in volleyball. The rest of my eighth grade year I also participated in track as well as the musical. Our class verse this year is from Galatians 6:4-5 which says “Each one should test their own actions...without comparing themselves to someone else, for each one should carry their own load.” I believe that this verse can encourage our entire school to improve on ourselves as well as help others out when we see them struggling. We should not be testing others actions, only our own. We can work to achieve our goals by carrying our load in a positive way. DeMotte Christian school encourages every student to do so. Hi, my name is Katlyn Sue F. My birthday is August 12, 2001. My amazing parents are Darletta and Jerad Flachsenberger. My mom works at Help at Home. My dad works at Van Drunen farms. I have three siblings that are out of school. Activities I have been involved in at DMC are track in 6th grade, basketball all three years, and soccer in 8th grade. I also did the musicals in 6th and 8th grade. I did an ISSMA ensemble in 6th and 8th grade. I will miss all of the teachers at DMC. I love how they genuinely care about us and will always do their best to help us learn. I will miss the fun and relaxed environment of DMC. I will miss having grown so close with my classmates and having that change. I will also miss having Bible memory every week. The Bible memory we have assigned every week really helps me learn God’s word. I can hear passages and I know we had it for Bible memory, and I think that shows how Bible memory really helped me grow. The thing I really take away from our class verse is that I should work as I am working for God and not for man. If I am doing this, and doing my best, I don’t need to compare myself to anyone else. I will be going to high school at Covenant Christian High school. I hope to play soccer and softball at Covenant. Hi! My name is Sara Lynn G, and I was born to Jeff and Dianna Groen on October 8, 2001. Including me there are five people in my family. Dad is a garbage man for Waste Management and is on KV’s school board, and Mom is a teller at DeMotte State Bank. My twin sisters, Megan and Kayla, are 17, and are seniors at KVHS. Megan will be attending Olivet Nazarene University, and Kayla will be attending Purdue University. I have been involved in a lot at DMC. I have been in band ever since 5th grade and ISSMA in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. I participated in Spell Bowl in 5th and 6th grade, and went to the Math Triathlon in 7th and 8th grade. I have done basketball and track for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade, and volleyball in both 7th and 8th grade. In 6th grade I was involved in The Music Man Jr as a townsperson, and this year I was involved in The Little Mermaid Jr as the director’s assistant. Our class verse is Galatians 6:4-5, which says, “Each one should test his own actions... without comparing themselves to somebody else, for each one should carry their own load.” This verse stands out to me in the way that I want to be able to do something and, after looking at what someone else has done, not feel better or worse based on my opinion of their work. Each person has their own abilities, talents, situations, etc. For example, there are definitely others who are better soccer players than me, but I might be better at something like logic puzzles. Why should I feel bad about being terrible at soccer when that’s not a talent God has given me? I will be going to KV next year. I will be playing golf and tennis, and will hopefully pursue a business career. As of right now, I don’t know what kinds of other activities I will want to participate in. Hopefully our class verse will help me keep a positive mindset not only in KV, but also in my everyday life. I don’t want to compare myself to someone and compromise my faith. I believe that my years at DMC have instilled in me a strong faith that will allow me to resist any temptation I may face. Maybe then God’s light will shine through me, and lives might be changed because of it. 27 On a chilly March 4 in 2002, John and Jill Heerema gave birth to their favorite child. That giggly child is me, Ellie Jane H. My amazing mom, Jill, is a substitute teacher at both Covenant and DMC. My hilarious dad, John, is a farmer and the Varsity Boys basketball coach at Covenant. My crazy, yet exciting, brother is Jacob. He is currently 17 years old and a junior at Covenant, which means that I get to go to tons of basketball and soccer games for him. I have been involved in basketball all three years and volleyball two years at DMC. I am going to miss all the fun times I had in sports. I was also the manager for track this year. I was in the Musical my 6th and 8th grade years. I was a town girl in Music Man Jr., and then Arista in Little Mermaid Jr. I will never forget how funny it was to watch all the Mersisters trying to walk the first day in mermaid tails. I was also in ISSMA in 6th and 8th grade singing in a girls ensemble. In 7th and 8th grade I went to Trinity College for the Math Triathlon. The verse my class chose is Galatians 6:4-5 ~ Each one should test their own actions… without comparing themselves to somebody else, for each one should carry their own load. This verse means that I should not want to do what the popular crowd and everyone else is doing. What I really should be wanting to do is the right, godly thing. I also need to be happy with what I have and be content, I should not want what others have. To me, carrying my own load means that I need to be using the gifts God has given me to glorify Him. If I had to give advice for 7th graders it would be have as much fun as you can. The year is going to fly by, trust me! Also, make sure to talk and become friends with the other grades. And never forget to leave anyone out, especially if it is someone new. Do not forget to pick a history fair topic you are interested in, it will make it a lot more fun if you do. Next year I am planning on going to Covenant Christian High School. I am planning on being in volleyball in high school and being in the musical. I am really excited to see all my friends who are already at CCHS. I might also be in either Student Council or chapel committee. After Covenant I am hoping to become a teacher. But wherever the Lord is leading me, I will do my best to serve Him. Hi, my name is Gavin Derek H. I was born on April 15, 2002, in El Paso Texas. My mother gave birth to me and also my twin sister. My mother's name is Lara, and my father's name is Derek. My mom is a stay-at-home mom, always cleaning up after us and making us food to eat. My dad is part owner of Fair Oaks and owns his own dairy called Herrema Dairy. I have two siblings. One of my siblings is Caleb, and he is 21 years old. He is graduating college this year. My other one is Mya. She is 14 years old just like me, and we are obviously graduating 8th grade this year. Through my years at DMC I was involved in the basketball team from 6 - 8 and was the starting point guard. We won the championship three years in a row, which has never been done in DMC history. I was also involved in track from 6 -7 grade. I did the musical in 6 grade and 8 grade; I was a set builder. The good things that I would say about DMC is that the teachers here are cool and really fun because they like to have fun. The advice I want to give the 7 graders that are going to be 8 graders next year is that you need to have fun but don’t be distracting in class. Also, get your work done because the students who start to get behind get really stressed out, and it's hard to to get caught up once you are behind. Our class verse this year is Galatians 4:6. This means to me that I shouldn’t always use someone else to do my own stuff. I will be going to Covenant Christian High School. I want to be involved in most of the sports and maybe the musical. I hope to become a professional basketball player and soccer player or work on the dairy. The Lord wants me to use my gifts and talents wisely. th th th th th th th th 28 I was born 14 years ago on April 15, 2002. Around 8 minutes later my brother was born, and you could just hear my joyful cries once I realized I had a twin. My name is Mya Mary H and my twin is Gavin H, and we were born in El Paso, Texas. My mother’s name is Lara and my father’s name is Derek. My mom is a stay-at-home mom, and she’s pretty good at it. She cooks us food and helps my dad out as much as she can at the dairy. As you might already, know my dad is a dairy farmer, and he is the owner at Herrema Dairy. My mother gave birth to 3 children over all, my older brother Caleb, Gavin, and me. Caleb is graduating college this year and is 21 years old. He hopes to be a dairy farmer some day just like my dad. In all my years in junior high I participated in basketball. I’ve only played basketball for school so it was always fun to look forward to the season. In 6th grade I participated in band and the musical and ISSMA. In 7th grade I participated in soccer, track, ISSMA, and band. Even though I only played soccer and track in 7th grade they were both fun things to be a part of. 8th grade I participated in a little of the musical but not much. For the upcoming 8th graders I would say this year was pretty easy, but there are weeks where you won’t be going to bed on time. I would suggest always staying on top of your work whether that’s doing it early or on time, and especially getting your Bible memory done. A lot of times it can sneak up on you, and before you know it you have already used your skip and extension. Overall don’t worry too much and just try to have fun because for some people it will be the last time you’ll be in that class with them. Don’t take things for granted and try to have some fun with the teachers. This year’s class verse was new to me, and I had never learned it before. I think it will be good to show the younger students a new verse that most of them have never heard. There’s a lot of different things I get out of our class verse but the main thing is that I should try my hardest. A lot of times I compare with others’ abilities in sports or art, but my main focus shouldn’t be beating them, it should be trying my hardest. When I strive to be like Jesus it’s a big goal that I know I won’t make, but the higher the goal the better I want to do. When you do something good whether it’s in a basketball or a soccer game, or draw something nice, or playing well at an instrument recital, you should take pride in yourself. Not the kind of pride where you boast and brag to other people, the kind where you feel good in yourself and you feel confident. I think we all forget this sometimes and start to be jealous of other people and the things we can’t do. We all carry our own load. For high school I will be going to Covenant Christian High School. I hope God leads me to find what I want to do in life, and I can make new memories. Hello, my name is Benjamin Harvey L. I was born on August 6, 2001 to Dennis and Lori Lins. My father, Dennis, is a bookkeeper at six different churches and also the athletic director at Covenant Christian High School. My mother, Lori, is a nurse at William’s Eye Surgery Center. I have three sisters and one brother. My oldest sister, Megan, is 24. She is married to Andrew DeBoer and lives in Lafayette. My brother, Josh, is 22 and is moving to Cleveland soon to work for the Cleveland Cavaliers. My sister, Hannah, is 19 and a freshman at Trinity Christian College. My other sister, Heidi, is 17 and she is a junior at Covenant Christian High School. I have been involved in many activities at DeMotte Christian. I have been involved in basketball for three years, soccer for two years, track for three years, volleyball for two years, and cross country for two years. I have also done band and choir every year. I was involved in the musical both years, too. I am going to Covenant Christian High School next year and I plan on being involved in a lot of sports. The class verse we chose was Galatians 6: 4-5. This verse is helpful because I am going to high school next year. In high school, I will be judging and trying to decide what people I want to be friends with. I do not need to compare myself to others and think that I am too good to hang out with them because of what they wear or something like that. I should not think of someone as too good for me either. A helpful verse to go along with the idea of not comparing myself to someone is Genesis 1: 27: “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.” 29 It was a nice spring day, June 9, 2001, to be exact. Jason and Melanie Marchand welcomed their beautiful first baby girl, Madisyn Grace M into the world. I’m not the only child in the family. I have two other younger brothers named Nole and Nate. Nole is 11 years old and is in the 5th grade, and Nate is 9 years old and is in the 2nd grade. Both of my brothers attend Rensselaer, and I am the only one that attends DMC. My mom and dad both work in Rensselaer and both have wonderful jobs. My mom works as a special education teacher at the middle school, and my dad works at a plant called National Gypsum. This plant makes drywall products and ships them all over in the U.S. Now, enough about me and let’s dig into what I enjoy about DMC! I have been at DMC for two years now and have enjoyed every bit of it. Even though I haven’t been here long, I have made many amazing friends and have received an excellent Christian education. I also have been in some pretty neat activities. I have been in basketball in both 7th and 8th grade. I have also been in the 8th grade ensemble, and the musical, which was The Little Mermaid Jr. I feel all of these activities have brought me much closer with friends. So, I encourage the 8th graders next year to join as many activities as you can. It will definitely bring you a lot closer to your friends, and you also get to know the other grade levels as well. I also encourage you to keep your grades and work up to date. Just because it is your 8th grade year, doesn’t mean you have to work less hard than all of the other years. Have fun with your last year at DMC, it will go faster than you think. Finally, for our class verse this year we have chosen Galatians 4: 6-5. This verse to me, teaches me a good lesson. It helps me to remember to not take pride in myself and to not worry about what others do or think about me. It tells me to be myself and to do everything to the best of my ability. For next year going into high school, I’m planning on going to Rensselaer. I hope to be on the swim team and also in their theatrical productions. High school is going to be very different, and I hope that I keep everything I have learned at DMC. I want to set good examples for those who don’t know Christ, and use my Christian education to my advantage. Hello, my name is Victoria Hope MD. I was born on December 27, 2001. My mom is Robin McDaniel, and she drives a bus for KV Corporation. My dad is Michael McDaniel, and he works for Ken's Beverage Company. I have 6 sisters. My youngest sister is Danika, and she is in kindergarten at DMC and is 6 years old. Then there is Reegan Joseph, my cousin. She is 8 years old, and in 2nd grade at DMC. Then there is Gabby. She is 9 years old, and she is in 3rd grade at DMC. Krisanna is 11 years old, and is in 6th grade at DMC. Then there is Jamison Moser, my cousin. He is 14 and in 8th at DMC. Francheska Slayton, is my half sister. She is 18, and a senior at CCHS. Ranen Toosley, my cousin, is 18 years old and goes to CCHS. My sister Hannah McDaniel lives in Springfield, Missouri, and is in college. My last sister is Alysha McDaniel. She lives in South Bend with her mom, her two children, and her boyfriend. In 6th grade I was involved in basketball, musical, ISSMA, cross country and track. Then in 7th grade I did volleyball, basketball, ISSMA, and track. This year I did soccer, basketball, ISSMA, track, and the musical. One thing I am going to really miss is the food. Mrs. Tazelaar makes the best school food that I have ever tasted. Another thing I am going to miss is the good spirit of helping people and the teachers being so nice. When it comes to school work, they help us catch up with it and help us keep a good attitude. Our class verse, Galatians 6: 4-5, means to me that each of us should always look to what we need and everything that is important to our lives but also look to the lives of others. We should not let others carry the weight of sin on their shoulders but instead help them get through it. We should carry our own load but also the loads of others. Next year I will be attending Covenant Christian High School. I plan on doing all the sports I am able to such as soccer, basketball, softball, and maybe the musical. I still hope that I will keep up on my school work. Some advice for the soon-to-be eighth graders is always keep up on your work. It may be hard, but I know that you can do it. Always stay on the teacher's good side. Yes, you can joke around for a little bit, but when it’s time to be serious then you need to straighten up. They always show God's love no matter what. Always stay with the right friends and stay right with God. 30 On the morning of August 30, 2001, in Crown Point, Indiana, I, Nolan William MK, was born. I was born to Matt and Darla McKim. My dad is the owner of Demotte Glass and my mom is a social worker at New Leaf Resources. I have 2 siblings, Ava and Brayden. Brayden is 18 and has down syndrome. He is a junior at Kankakee Valley High School. Ava is 10 and in 5th grade here at DMC. I have been involved in many things at DMC. In fifth and half of sixth grade I was in band playing the saxophone. In sixth grade I also did cross country. In sixth through eighth grade I did track and basketball. I also did the play in sixth and eighth grade. I played soccer and guys volleyball in seventh and eighth. One thing I will miss about DMC is the teachers. All the teachers here have great personalities and have taught me a lot of things. I will also miss our championship winning basketball team. We dominated the league. I will also miss our really awesome basketball jerseys. Our class verse is Galatians 6:4-5. It means to me that whatever I do I should do it for Christ and since I am doing my best, I can boast about my good work for Christ. I also should do my best so I do not rely on others to carry the load for me. I will be attending Kankakee Valley High School in Wheatfield, Indiana. I will be involved in soccer, basketball, and baseball. I will also be taking certain classes for engineering at KV. I hope that one day I will become an engineer. My name is Calvin John M. I was born on February 12, 2002, in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. My parents are Kirsten Mayhew, married to my stepfather Jonathan Mayhew, and my dad, Henry Miller. My mom is a nurse at Porter County Regional Health and a real estate agent at Century 21 affiliated. My stepfather, is a Pioneer seed salesman for Bob Little. My dad, works for Zoller computer programing and travels around the country. I have three siblings, and they are all brothers, my oldest younger brother is Wesley Miller who is 12 years old and in 6th grade. My next younger brother is Owen Mayhew, he is 5 years old and is in pre-school, my youngest brother is Samuel Mayhew, and he is 4 years old and is not yet in school. At DMC I have been involved in cross-country for 3 years, basketball for 2 years, ISSMA for 2 years, volleyball for 1 year, and in the school musicals when I was in 6th and 8th grade. My class verse is great, because I think it tells me to take chances and make mistakes, but do what I need to do. For high school I will be going to Kankakee Valley High School. I hope to be involved in football, swimming or basketball, and track and field. If everything goes right I would love to be a marine biologist. I feel like the Lord is leading me there because of my passion for the water and the animals in it! Hello, my name is Jamison Bradley M, I was born on February 13, 2002. My guardians’ names are Michael McDaniel, who works at a beverage machine repair company called Ken’s Beverage Industries, and Robin McDaniel, who currently works as a KV bus driver. My many siblings are Danika McDaniel, kindergarten, Reegan Joseph, 2nd grade, Gabby McDaniel, 3rd grade, Krisanna McDaniel, 6th grade, Tori McDaniel, 8th grade, Frankie Slayton, Senior, and Ranen Toosley, Senior. Some activities I have been involved in are basketball in 6th and 7th grade and the musicals. I was spotlight in 6th grade for the musical, and a set mover for the musical this year. Galatians 6:4-5 means a lot to me because I need to test and be myself and not think that I need to be like someone else. I plan on going to Covenant Christian High School next year. 31 My name is Megan Renae N, and I was born on September 29, 2001, to Rhonda and Brian Nannenga. I have one sibling, Nicole, and a dog, Max, that’s practically like the little brother you never wanted. My sister is sixteen and a sophomore at Kankakee Valley High School. It’s the best times when my sister and I go on McDonald’s or Family Express runs. My dad works for Crown Brick as a mason. Dirtbike racing and traveling to Michigan to ride snowmobiles has always been entertaining with my father. My mother’s name is Rhonda, and she works as a flight attendant for American Airlines. Going shopping and having a girls’ day out could only be made wonderful with my mother. I have been in sports all three years at DMC. I did basketball and track every year, and volleyball my 7th and 8th grade years. I also ran cross country when I was in 6th and 7th grade. In 6th grade I participated in the play. The class verse we’ve chosen has an encouraging effect on me. Galatians 6:4 - “Each one should test his own actions...without comparing themselves to someone else for each one should carry their own load.” It helps me become more independent in a way. If we all look to each other’s accomplishments there would be hardly any progress made in our own lives. This verse teaches me to be proud with the gifts God has given me and not compare them to someone who may have been given other gifts. For my freshman year, I will be attending Kankakee Valley High School. I hope to participate on the volleyball court and on the track at KV. Art class is a possibility for me as well. In my future I hope to train to become a veterinarian. Other jobs I have in mind are astronomy, an athletic trainer, or some type of drawer for Disney. I feel like God is leading me more towards being a veterinarian and helping out animals. God has gifted me with the love for animals which makes me more interested in that job. Hi, I am Andrew Dale N. I was born on August 4, 2001. My parents are Dale and Shelley Nieuwbeerta. My dad works for SiteOne Landscapes, and my mom works at home taking care of her children. I have one sister and believe me, one is enough. My sister Kaitlyn is 16 and goes to Covenant Christian HIgh School and is finishing her Junior year. My time at DMC has been short but interesting. I came to DMC last year in seventh grade and since then then I have been involved in many things. I was involved in soccer in seventh grade and went on to do basketball and track and field. I did basketball and track my eighth grade year but did not do soccer. I did ISSMA both of those years and plan on doing it all four years of high school at Covenant Christian. I will miss DMC a little. First of all, we will not get recess. Second, we also will not get hot lunch every day, but my mom is the hot lunch lady at Covenant. The verse that our class chose is Galatians 6:4-5 Each one should test his own actions...without comparing themselves to someone else, for each one should carry their own load. To me this verse means that I should try as hard as I can at everything I do, then I will be able to test others’ work. No one should criticize someone on their work without first judging their own. A long, long time ago in a hospital far away…… Curtis Wayne P was born to Joe and Darlene Propst. That day long ago was December 17, 2001. I have 3 brothers. The oldest is Chris who is 24 or 25 and lives in Des Moines, Iowa. The next in line is Clayton, a Junior at CCHS who is 17 years old, I think. Then we have Cole...who is by far the loudest and youngest in the family. He is 12 years old and is in 6th grade. We wouldn’t even be here if it weren’t for our parents. My dad is an Operating Engineer, that means he drives big boy TONKA’s and my mom is a deliverer for Birchwood Genetics. They both work long hard hours, and I can’t thank them enough. I don’t mean to brag, but I have been in a lot of activities at DMC. I have been in all the National Geographic Geography Bee’s since 4th grade, and I have won the past 2 years. I even got to go down to the state level competition these last two years. I also participated in 6th grade boys basketball. I am a track team member this year, and it is a blast. I like the verse we chose. I even think it was the one I submitted. It is Galatians 6:4-5, “Each one should test their own actions … without comparing themselves to someone else, for each one should carry his own load.” I chose this verse because I firmly believe we shouldn’t piggy-back and take other people's’ work and claim it as our own. But I like the idea of helping others. I see it as we help others in spiritual ways, but we also have to take care of ourselves. It is a verse that I have had highlighted in my Bible since 4th grade, and I plan on highlighting it in the Bible I get from graduation. Now I bet you are thinking “where is this fine young man going to high school?” I am going to Covenant. I am told the teachers are awesome and fun, and it is a great community to be part of. Thank you for reading this. It has been a pleasure telling you about me. 32 My name is Jacob (Jake) Thomas R. I was born on April 10, 2002. I was born to Jim and Tawnya Roodzant, a veterinarian and stay-at- home mom, in Madison, Wisconsin. I have three brothers and one sister. Sam is 15, Matthew is 12, Molly is 10, and Brady is 7. Sam is the only child older than me; he attends Covenant Christian high school as a sophomore. Matthew, Molly, and Brady attend DMC in grades 6, 4, and 2. I have been involved in basketball, soccer, guys volleyball, Student Council, STARS, and musicals throughout my junior high career at DMC. If I had any advice for the incoming 8th grades I would tell them that they should listen and respect their teachers’ wisdom and knowledge. Our class verse this year, Galatians 6:4-5, means to me that I should work hard at what I do and not compare myself to others. This should be important to the other classes in our school. Next year I will be attending Covenant Christian High School. There I hope to play on the soccer and baseball teams. I hope to pursue a career as an Architectural Engineer. My name is Layla Renee S. I was born on September 12, 2001. My guardian’s name is Merri Saboff, and she works at a flower shop. I live with my grandmother and my younger sister named Patience, who is 10 years old and goes to KVIS. Her grades in school are pretty good since she gets A’s often. I haven’t really been into sports or any activities at DMCS since I came to this school in January 2016 and was only here for one semester. I thought this school was okay. Classes were different than KV’s, but I guess I enjoyed coming to DMCS. For high school, I might go back to KV or I might go to a high school in Valpo. The class verse, Galatians 6:4-5, tells me to make a careful exploration of who I am and what work I have been given. I shouldn’t compare myself to others. I must take responsibility for what I am doing in my own lives. Hello! My name is Alexander Lee S, and I was born on January 14, 2001. I have two families, but I am only going to mention the one that I live with. My mom is Sarah Steffel Sears, 30, she is a stay at home mom that watches my newborn sister Annika. My dad is Richard Lee Sears, 37 He currently works as a bagger/fork lift driver at BMC(Belstra Milling Company). I have three sisters that I live with, lucky me. One is Tessa, 2nd grade. Another is Breanna, kindergarten. And finally Annika, 8 weeks old, as I mentioned before. Plus we have our indoor dog named Luna. This is a very crowded family if you look at the statistics. Now let’s talk about what I was involved in at this school. I played a various amount of sports. I played basketball, volleyball, and track. I didn’t play any sports in eighth grade because I got a long lasting injury on my hand, but I will be able to play in high school. I do have advice for the seventh graders for their eighth grade year. It is as simple as this, don’t mess around and you won’t have a problem. If you have school work to do, don’t wait to get it done at the last minute. If you do, you’ll be swamped with a lot of homework in a short amount of time. I’m not telling you that you need to be perfect, but it is very helpful to get things done early. Now let's talk about about our class verse. “Each one should test his own actions...Then he can take pride in himself...Without comparing himself to anybody else”. This tells me that I should test myself in what I do every day. That I should not boast in a bad manner in whatever I am doing. Boasting can hurt other people mentally. If I boast in the correct way, without comparing myself to anybody else, then I can take pride in myself. I will be going to Kankakee Valley High school next year so I’m not going to be at Covenant. I am hoping to become a worker in construction, so I am taking classes in math and algebra for ninth grade. I am going to play basketball and maybe track. 33 Hello, my name is Caleb Thomas VM, and I am the youngest in my family. I was born on May 18, 2002. I have three older sisters; the oldest is Kristen, married to Cory Holloway. Kristin is a super great example and was the guinea pig in our family; she did everything new and we learned from her. She is very important in my life and has set a great example for me. My next oldest sister is Courtney. She is like my quirky older sister who is always enjoyable to be around; even if we are mad at eachother she somehow makes it fun. She always is very loud and proud about everything she is doing, even personal stuff, and she brings me much joy. Then the next sister in line, the closest in age to me, is Kaylin. Although we always seem to be on edge with each other, she helps me a lot and even if we are mad at each other at the end of the day normally all is well. She is a junior in high school at CCHS. My mom’s name is Jenny, and she works at DSB Wealth Management. She always helps so much around the house and will sacrifice having fun so us kids can have fun, and she is always there. Then there's my dad. His name is Tom, he works for Emcor Hyer Electric, and he bids jobs. He is so fun, he likes a bunch of sports and always has a positive attitude and somehow always looks at the up side. Here at DMC my first year of junior high I didn’t do any sports, but I did band. Then in 7th grade I played basketball and volleyball and enjoyed both. Then this year was probably my favorite because I played soccer. Soccer is probably one of my favorite sports now. I played basketball this year and enjoyed that, and I also played volleyball and had a lot of good times. Some of the things I liked about DMC is the fact that all the teachers are always there to help you, and you feel so welcomed. I also like having a small school because you know everyone and everyone is your friend, and it is great. If someone is inquiring about DMC I think that they should definitely go; it is like a big family and everyone is welcome and every teacher is there and ready to help you. Our class verse is Galatians 6:4. “Each one should test his own action...without comparing themselves to someone else, for each should carry his own load.” This verse is important to our class because our class is caring and helps each other out of the tough times. Next year I plan to go to CCHS and plan on playing many sports. On December 12, 2001, at exactly 2:00 PM, the Cade Michael W era began. I am the middle child in my family. I have an older brother named Nick, he is 16 and a sophomore at Covenant. My younger sister Gwen is in 6th grade here at DMC and is 11 years old. My dad Robb is a carpenter for Specialty Construction and coached our basketball team 6th through 8th grade. Kristi, my loving mom, is the kindergarten teacher here at DMC. I have played basketball, track, soccer, and volleyball all the years I was able to at DMC. I also participated in cross country for my last year here. Our class verse, Galatians 6:4, reminds me that no matter what happens I need to work hard for my Lord and savior. I shouldn’t compare myself to others, but try to set an example for them. Highlights from my career at DMC include three-peating in basketball and getting new jerseys our 8th grade year. They’re pretty awesome. It was always fun bonding and growing during our season with teammates and coaches. Something I’ll miss from DMC is being able to play with our DMC team, it will be different playing without some of my teammates. I will miss those who are close to me who are going to a different school. I will be attending Covenant Christian High School next year, and hope to be playing basketball, and possibly soccer and baseball as well. I am excited for high school and am hoping it goes well. I have had fun at DMC. 34 On May 27, 2002, in Munster, Indiana, my mother, Shannon K. Williams, and father, Christopher D. Williams, welcomed a beautiful baby girl into the world! They named her Christianna Danielle Ellouise W. I’m now 14 years old and the baby of my family: I have one brother, Sean (22) and three sisters, Brittney (22), Machaila (17), and Leah (16). Leah is a sophomore at Covenant Christian High School, Machaila goes to Ivy Tech and will graduate in 2017, and both Sean and Brittney are getting married this summer. My mom works as an Occupational Therapist, and my dad is a Behavioral Health Technician. I have been blessed to attend DeMotte Christian School since preschool. I have been involved in many activities: band, basketball, volleyball, and both musicals. I will miss Mrs. Tazalar’s amazing hot lunches, sports, the musicals, and the awesome teachers and jokes. I will also miss the great Christ centered environment. This is a really good school, and I’m very grateful my parents sent me here. My advice for next year's 8th graders is to be respectful to everyone, help others, and obey the Lord’s teachings. Our class chose Galatians 6:4-5 as next year's theme. Each one should test their own actions...without comparing themselves to someone else. For each one should carry their own load. For me, these verses mean that I need to focus on my actions, my Christian character, and not compare myself to worldly standards. Instead, I need to focus on God and what He wants me to do and be. For high school, I plan to go to Covenant Christian. I hope to be involved in sports, activity groups, cheerleading, and plays. In the future, my goals are to attend college and become a veterinarian. Not only do I love animals, but I feel that’s where God is leading me. My name is Josiah Zachery W. I was born on December, 20, 2000. My parents’ names are Jay and Jen. My dad works for Belvarken which is a company branched off of BMC. They do maintenance on all of the pig farms. He is in charge of over 100 different pieces of machinery, anything from lawn mowers and weed wackers to telehandlers and skid steers. My mom cleans houses and our church, and she is also the church secretary. She does all of the household things too. I have 3 siblings. Jessica is the oldest, then Jay Jr, Janna and I'm the youngest. Jessica is 29 and married and has one daughter, Zoey, who is 3 now. Jessica married Andrew Naughton. He is like a brother to me so he is considered a sibling, he is 30. Then there is Jay, 26. He is married to Aleah Kalesa. He works for Belvarken like my dad. He takes care of inventory and tells the crew and my dad what is needed to be done on the farms. My sister Janna is 20, and she is going to St. Joseph's college to become a teacher. I have been involved in every sport that DMC provides. I played basketball all 3 years, soccer for one, track for 2, volleyball for one year and cross-country for one year. I have enjoyed all of the sports that I have been involved in, and I had a lot of fun playing and competing. I will miss playing basketball with our team; we have really become close and very coordinated in our games. It will be hard to adjust to a different coach and different players. I will be going to KV instead of Covenant like most of the others in my class. I am going to KV because it provides a lot more in sports and in agriculture, which I hope to get into. They also have welding and carpentry classes. I have a lot of friends at KV that I share a lot more interests with. I think that our class verse is very encouraging to our younger and older students at DMC. It says that we should do our best and not take pride in whatever we do. We also should never compare ourselves to others. I came into this world on a Sunday, the 26th of May in 2002, to Tim and Joni (Knip) Zylstra. They named me Hope Renee Z and that’s basically how my life began. My two-year-old brother Luke was very glad to have me! He’s now 16 and will become a junior in high school. I also have a younger sister, Kendra, who is 12 and will be a 7th grader here at DMC and a little brother, Connor, who’s 7 and will be a second grader. My dad works for Van Drunen Farms, and my mom is a kindergarten teacher here at DMC. Here at DeMotte Christian, I’ve participated in track, basketball, cross country, student council, and ISSMA all three years along with soccer in 7th grade, volleyball in 8th, and the musical in 6th and 8th. I’m going to miss the ability to be involved in so many extracurriculars and sports without having to miss out on any. If you’re inquiring about DMC, I’d say go for it. Everyone is very friendly and makes sure you learn a lot too. If I were asked to give some advice to the future 8th graders, I would say have a good attitude every day no matter what. Enjoy yourself, even in bad circumstances, because you’re middle school days are limited- so make the most of them! Next year, I’ll join Luke at Covenant Christian High School, where I hope to play basketball and I don’t know what else. Our class verse, Galatians 6:4-5, means I should not compare myself to others, and I should not be proud of myself or my accomplishments but be glad I am God’s child. It’s really encouraging to me to help other people out but only worry about my own load. 35 "Each one should test his own actions…without comparing himself to somebody else, for each one should carry his own load.” Galatians 6:4, 5 36
